Targa Florio 73, now with Traffic! - 2023 Update

  • I took a look at Abulzz' beautiful LIDAR-data based recreation of the Targa Florio a year ago, and boy has it come a long way since then! Additional vegetation, retexturing, thousands and thousands of objects, integration of custom multiplayer start procedure, and now AI traffic (amongst many other things). This track is coming along extremely nicely and deserves every ounce of coverage I can give it.
    So come with me on a ride with a beautiful Ferrari 250 GTO and cross your fingers we don't hit a local!

    I had the good fortune to actually attend the Targa Florio race in 1973 - the last true race to be held. We did two or three laps of the circuit in our hired Fiat 124 estate car -a wonderful experience! Your comments about the Practice brought it all back. Driving along reasonably sedately (I had two very young children in the back of the Fiat) and meeting animals, donkey and bullock carts, other road users, pedestrians and at the same time being overtaken by race cars was completely new experience, as you can imagine. Probably the most bizarre was the run along the coast road. We were in a stream of traffic, doing about 50 mph with the competitors overtaking us in the race cars going 100 mph faster than the traffic stream!
    We stopped for a coffee in a little coffee bar in Collesano during one lap, I left the lady wife with the children in the bar and stood in the doorway and watched several competitors screaming down the hill and braking for the hairpin - another bizarre experience.
    The race was something else - just wonderful. We watched somewhere up in the hills (I can't remember where, as I got us lost on the back roads on the way there and just came upon the circuit eventually and stopped there to watch. The drive back to the hotel was as exciting as the race - everyone doing their best to set a new lap record and having no regard to other drivers -it was one of the few times I have actually been a little scared while driving - great fun though, as you daren't slow down!!!
    Thanks for the show!

    In 1973 people with devices in their hands near their heads would have been listening to small transistor radios. Either football broadcasts or even about the race from a regional radio station.

    • @Racer63.
      @Racer63. ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Yes, very common in football and car racing too. It was the only way to follow 30 or 40 cars on a 72 kms course.Surely some local station. Le Mans was the first racing event to have it's own am station purposedly set up for the race.

    Last year I was lucky enough to drive Targo Florio in real life. This is very very close. The elevation change is a lot more accurate than the old GPL one, particularly at Cerda.
    The mountain section after the hairpin around Caltavuturo is more rocky in real life. The road has really fallen victim to subsidence, with big sections falling away and most notably, a section of the track closed near Scillato, forcing you through the village and under the motorway on a different route briefly.
    Collesano is that narrow - so that's good (NINO is still written on one of the walls there, on the right turn after the hairpin). You have that view of the sea in real life too, that section is just as windy, fast and flowy. The road is potholey as hell and theres a lot more traffic there.
    The roads are so empty you can pin it even in a tame hire car for the most part (even a shitey Lancia Ypsilon). Most people use the freeway, so it's kind of a blessing. One of the most amazing driving experiences of my life.
    Seeing the pit stands and walking around them was quite surreal after so many laps (and failed attempts)

    • @LasseJOugaard
      @LasseJOugaard ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I was there last year too. (See my other comment). I had a similar experience to you! Some places are spot on in the sim, others I don't recognize at all 😅
      The roads have definitely fallen from grace, since the races. I remember the SP24 and SP9bis as especially bad.
      The sim definitely captures the feeling of the place, the only difference I would point out, is that it was much more dry, yellow and barren in real life. In part because of the drought last summer i suppose.
      Did you visit the museum in Collesano?

    • @stenovitz
      @stenovitz ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly! I was there back in June 2012 (as a 40 year birthday present to myself, lurking my girlfriend (now wife) to 'take a trip up the country side'). The steep section at Cerda is bulls eye. And then try driving the slopes in VR, the elevation changes are really massive and authentic!

    • @jonthedoors
      @jonthedoors ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LasseJOugaard I didnt get to visit the museum unfortunately, it was closed! Loved seeing the mosaics on the walls.
      I had a coffee in a cafe in the corner, refuelled at the petrol station there (pretending it was a mechanic pit stop in my brain, obviously) and then booted it for the run downhill.
      How is the museum?

    27:30 Piccolo circuit is 72km, Medio circuit was 108km, and the Grande circuit was 146km, all within the district of Palermo, which was run more or less by the Florio empire at the time. The full island tour of Sicily was 979km, used in the 1910's and 1940's when the other routes weren't available, usually because of flooding.

  • @OgamiItto70
    @OgamiItto70 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    In contrast to the Nordschleife, when you drive around this circuit at less than full-on racing speed, it doesn't feel like a waste of time or "baby steps" while learning the lefts and rights. It feels like a diverting, pleasant drive in the country.
    What a fantastic circuit. It's already astounding and beautiful -- and it's only going to get better? Amazing.

  • @LasseJOugaard
    @LasseJOugaard ปีที่แล้ว +8

    That was really nice. He's done so well with this. I absolutely share your passion for this event and circuit! Personally I was there last year on my motorcycle, to expecience it myself. I did two complete laps of the circuit, which is possible almost just like in this video. The SP24 was closed just before Scillato due to some roadworks, so you had to divert down a tiny farm-road. The first lap I did as quickly as I dared. That took me 1h19m, even on a motorcycle! The second one I was cruising and stopping for lots of photos. I was actually stopped by the police, but fortunately on the slow lap! Once he heard I was there to experience Targa Florio, he completely forgot about checking papers and sent me on my way with a big smile! 😅
    And you're absolutely right, it's not really a tourist attraction per se. I was all alone sniffing around the old pit buildings. The atmosphere there is special - the scent of Castrol R seems to still hang in the air!
    If you do a race on this version Im' totally in. The only reason I did not participate in the championship last year, was because I was travelling on the bike for half a year 👍

    52:42 Famous Collesano corner taken lots of photo opportunities during the golden years.
    During Christmas holidays a couple of months ago, I took the liberty VR driving likewise cruising of Abulzz' precious work, just in the lovely Bizzarrini 5300 GT.
    But being in a race event, adding a grid of race cars of the time, i.e. Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/3's, Porsche 904/6's, Ferrari 312PB's, Porsche 718 GTRs, Ferrari 250 GTOs, Bizzarrini 5300 GTs, Abarth Simca 1300's, Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ2's, Abarth-Simca 2000GT, Lancia Fulvia (missing Lancia Flavia mod and Lancia Flaminia, anyone?), etc.
    THEN I parked at this infamous corner, got out of the car (my flexible NLR seat), and just waited, looking around.
    Hearing the roars and screaming cylinders coming down the mountain at distance, very loud entering the village and then suddenly appearing violently round the corner, just past your eyes and ears ...such an undescribable massive immersion. But too young to real life experience, I was only turned 5yo when they raced Piccolo Circuito for the last time.
    Wish I was there in the golden years. (at least drove round the slope on my 40th birthday decades later, but not the same)
    And again Jake : Your content is second to none, once again! 'Thanks' is so a little word.

    The only problem is that I start off slow, enjoying the view. Then get into it and start enjoying myself even more. Then the speed increases and I start to feel like Nino. Then I realise I'm not and crash over a mountain side.

    The spectators IMO are currently immersion breaker, their style of clothes is very 2000s, and some of them are placed weirdly, up in the air, and generally what i found back when working on ams1 tracks, best to place them more in groups, rather than in random places, they always look more logical when there are groups of 4-5 people.
    I was looking to get some crowd models and render the billboards of them for our vintage tracks, if/when i get to that, i can share renders if Abulzz is up for that.
    The work is spectacular so far. There were those big releases we've been waiting for, a decade ago - PnG, HistrorX, Enduracers - nowadays modders do car by car (because evrything has got way more complex) and the feeling of waiting/looking forward to/anticipating something big is kinda not here anymore, but with this Targa project this feeling is back.

    The 1973 race was the lat year it was part of the World Championship, but it did continue as a conventional circuit race through 1977.
    Yeah, there are a few spots where it seems like the road has been straightened, though this could well be due to this being a 1973 version, whereas the others are modeling 1967.
    Certainly, the motorway bridges weren't there back in '67. That is one of those things that does make me lean toward the earlier iteration.
    The Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale wouldn't be bad, either. The Ferrari is a nice in-between GT though, and very well balanced still. It's definitely more grunt and weight than the GTA, but neither is it the unruly beast that is something like the Bizzarrini or Corvette of the time.
    They do use sections of the lap for a round of the Italian Rally Championship, or at least they had been for quite a while there.
    There was the Giro di Sicilia, which sometimes doubled as the Targa, and that was 600+ km. The actualy Madonie Grande was 148 km, with the Medio being 108 km.
    At least it's not like the Mille Miglia, where they really couldn't close the roads,n ot even for the race itself. Now there's a terrifying thought. Although, people would have known about the race and probably tried to avoid unnecessarily driving on the route.
    Yeah, ~300 hp and about 2,200 lb in full competition trim. It did win the FIA GT Championship in 1962-64, so it wasn't that outdated, and certainly did the business in its day.
    A 330 P4 should be a blast around here. Everybody talks about the Porsches, but the 910 only picked up roughly a minute over the 906 from '66. Meanwhile, the 4-liter Ferraris picked up 2 minutes or so of lap time. The 330 P3/4 clocked in the fastest Practice time at a 37:12.2, while the 412 P had the fastest Race lap of a 37:09.
    It does seem like, with this mod, they initially maybe took away quite a few of the trees and bushes and such before adding things back in.
    You're thinking of "The Speed Merchants", which was filmed in 1972. I think there was an episode of "Glory Days", or something equivalent, that I saw part of on Speed in like 2003 that covered one year of the Targa somewhere there in 1965-70.
    I'm reminded of something we have comparatively even quite a bit less about than the Targa, and that's the old Mugello Stradale circuit and the races held there.
    In the 1903 Paris-Madrid Race, one of the reported hazards was animal attacks.
    The Chaparral 2F was definitely too much car around here, but you almost have to laugh seeing the photos of it from the 1967 event. It just looks so out of place.

    Very nice introduction lap of this amazing track, thanks for that! Do you have a link for all these classic low-poly traffic cars, like the Abarth, Peugeot, Porsche etc.? I only have the ones from the Shutoko Revival Project (with "traffic" in front of the car name).
    And are the trains near the end somehow triggered with your arrival in that area? Would be too bad if you made a good lap (for a video e.g. ^^) and no train is there. 😉

    If you have problems with TrackIR during racing, you don't use the right settings. My tip: set it up to do 2DOF only, so no roll. You can tweak it to have a deadzone if just moving your head a little, but usually it should be enough to lower sensitivity to minimum and to flatten the curve so you only get subtle rotation if just looking to the apex and progressive rotation if you want to look around. The first years I was running settings so subtle I often didn't notice it was not active until I wanted to look around.

    • @ElGuilleTime

      @@raffriff42 Anyway, there are no downsides using TrackIR for racing you can't fix. Performance and consistancy should be the same or better while using it if properly set up. Just a fun-fact: I've recently tried out VR again and even bought a Pimax 8k+ today because VR is still king of immersion, but I'm not as consistent in VR and I struggle with the same setups I've made with TrackIR and felt comfortable because they are too oversteering in VR. I probably get better used to it soon, but there are a lot more downsides to VR.

    • @Leynad778
      @Leynad778 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GPLaps I won many online-races with TrackIR and almost never DNF'ed because of my mistakes, so your claim "you loose the feeling of the car" seems quite BS to me. IMO it's rather the opposite because even with my 49" G9 it's not possible to see the exit of many tight corners and hairpins before the apex without headtracking. I prefer using Crew Chief online, but often forgot to activate it because it's only to be aware of dive-bombers in my blind spot and not having to observe them if they come close to me.

      For AC I personally use One:One. Of course you cant look around the car that way, but 99.9% of the time you will be looking forward anyways and that way is the most natural and immersive.
      For an all round view, you'll probably just want to use Smooth with adjustmens like GPLaps.

    The real question I ask myself is : will there ever be another car simulation that will offer the opening allowed by assetto corsa for modding ?
    Assetto corsa is a beautiful and very pleasant physical model, with incredible graphics today (CSP/SOL/Pure...) and an absolutely huge library of splendid cars and tracks like this.
    With modern hardware (PC and CG), we were able to transform a 2014 game into a 2023 game that does not have to be ashamed of the comparison with the others.
    But will we find such an open game in the future? Even at Kunos? I'm not particularly optimistic in this area, even if assetto corsa still has many years of pure pleasure to offer me.
    In the meantime, I started with a 4770K + 1070Ti and my Oculus CV1, and today I take even greater pleasure on it with my 12700K + DDR5 + 4070Ti, still on my CV1 and while waiting for the HP reverb G2 which will coming soon (within a month). There is no doubt that I will be dazzled by the change with the CV1 that I have had for 5 years and which has already given me so much satisfaction !
    And I know that I have many more years of motoring pleasure on this fantastic evolutionary simulation.
    I still hope that Kunos (or another) will soon offer a new car simulation as open as this one to modding.
    And that I would have the pleasure of seeing your videos on it too!

    That’s what I call shit luck, hopefully it won’t be to long until I can push a pedal down (or even wear a damn shoe…) and drive this wonderful track in it’s newest version!
    At least I live in Germany so it won’t affect me monetarily.
    Docs are paid by my my mandatory health insurance and if I couldn’t work I also still get my full money.

      @rawspeed1678 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know how you might be feeling. I smashed my big toe by having a 17kg slab of steel fall on it. That was 2 weeks ago and I can only drive trucks and tractors in my sim. Cars make it bleed and hurt. I'm lucky that the damage was mostly internal and a lot better than it could have been. I am just now considering driving cars but without a shoe and wrapped. If it doesn't throb I reckon I'm good to race. And back to Targa.
      In AU we used to have free health but now the cost is crippling (pun intended) even with health insurance. I'm glad to hear there is somewhere in the world that is forward thinking.
