It's a real shame the Targa didn't go the way the Isle of Man TT did and be a stand-alone event, you know, still going on its own without being part of any championship. It was the oldest race in the world and as such it should have continued, just not part of any championship.

You have no clue. 1973 was the last World Championship event. Until 1977, Targa was held with fewer laps, but still with sports cars - and with bad accidents. From 1978 onwards, it was held as a Rally, with road legal cars.

Amazing video! Really well done, just one "nitpick"
    At 4:40 you state that:
"Timesheet shows they could have won even if the two Ferraris and Alfas stayed in the race, and didn't retire"
Considering 1972 race where the Ferrari won with a time of 6 hours 27 minutes 48 seconds vs the Porsche's 6 hours 54 minutes 19 seconds.
Even if we look at the 1973's qualifying the 312PB / 33TT were roughly 3 minutes and 20 seconds faster than the RSR. That's a huuuge margin. I don't see the RSR winning without those failing. Especially with the lineup of drivers they had.
I don't want to shadow the achievement Porsche had by winning that race, just that you can't really see that on the "timesheet".

Thanks for watching! I see your point, and well made! The only thing I can think of is perhaps they were handicapped for some reason and running slower for at the part of the race where the comparison was made. Potentially it's a rose coloured grand statement... ha.

@@DuckWhale Haven't checked the weather actually, not sure how it was to drive in the wet/moist on a 312 / 33 compared to a 911. But at the end of the day the Porsche got the glory of winning the last FIA Targa Florio regardless :)

You better look up the other results of the 1973 World Championship for Sportcars. A 911 won the 24h of Daytona overall, so two wins in the 1973 WC season, for a 10 year old road car that was related to the 1930s VW Beetle. In each race, even at fast tracks like Monza, the old Spa, Le Mans, there were 911 in the Top 10, often in the Top5. And it had not yet been developed into the turbocharged 911/930/934/935 yet.

@@mattg432 In Daytona Matra, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari didn't even compete, so they were down 3 huge manufacturer of 3 litre Sport Prototypes. If I recall correctly there was only Lola and Mirage with 3 litre engines which could have competed with the Porsche but both of retired.
If we look at the races where Ferrari, Matra and Alfa Romeo brought their car, it's quite obvious to see that the RSR was outmatched in every aspect.
There weren't many Sport 3.0 cars other than the big 3, plus some appearance from some Lolas or Mirages. Of course the 911 can finish in top 10 or top 5... There weren't any other cars with such a powerful engine.
