I've had my pit boss for about a year and a half, it was my first smoker. Now that I've really put some use into it I've noticed the temp issues in the barrel. I cut the curved side from that ash pan to use as a heat deflector for the curved plate, saved some $. Also bought a heavy duty heat deflector for the fire pot and bent in the bottom of the sides for a better fit. Those two mods have improved performance but I'm definitely going to use some of the things I learned from this video as well to really dial in my cooking! The handles on the right to avoid moving the plates are GENIUS.

Instead of cutting the center out of the pellet grate, I purchased machine screws and nuts to fit the mounting screw openings. The screws are I believe 1 inch long and support the grate from falling in pellet hopper. I used 2 nuts on each screw to keep it tight. Works great for when you need access and still have proper 'safety' when in use. I am also in the process of using a similar method for the top grill storage on the back. Less expensive and more readily available. I tried the magnet thing but they kept sliding down when I put the grill on the hooks. Front shelf ordered... excellent idea.

That heat diffuser might work for my issue. After running the grill at 450/500 degrees the front and back of my cook drum is starting to rust. What I realized is the factory curved diffuser is causing extreme heat at the middle front and back of the grill. It got so hot it burned the coating off and is now causing rust pretty badly. I considered adding a spacer plate to take the heat and punishment of high temp cooks but that diffuser at the pot might do the trick. I hope future models have thicker walls or a spacer/diffuser system. I still love my Austin XL though.
Gabe, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. One thing I might caution you about is that I’m finding the heat defusing plate over the fire pot needs to be opened at higher temperatures. When the temperature setting is high the flames are trapped in the pot and will ignite the pellets in the auger. I had smoke coming out of the hopper. I don’t grill at higher temps often so it hasn’t been a problem. I open the diffuser at 400° and above
Actually I had just bought one from PBR an even got a heat deflector mod for mine and also from pittboss themself had purchased the WiFi Bluetooth controller for my Austin XL .Thinking I’m all set
Paul, that link seems to come and go. I’ve found it available a couple time since. I will post and let you know when it’s available again. Thank You for following.
Thank you so much! I believe the only part that’s been available off and on is the diffuser. Which parts are you looking for? Maybe I can find a link for you.

Lawrence!!! Thank you!!!🙏🏼
Great recommendations...but wouldn't it have been easier just to buy a more expensive grill that may have had solutions to some of these issues?
Joshua, I’ve been asked that question several times. This was my first smoker so I was not sure what I needed when I purchased it. The enjoyment I’ve had dialing in my smoker is priceless. I ultimately spent less money than buying a grill with some of these features. The final result is a smoker that I would put up against any pellet grill!! If you are on Twitter, checkout @thisgrilllife. An amazing group of people and you’ll see just how dialed in my grill is on a regular basis.
Right at 4:55 you cant hear what you said you use for the heat loss when you pulled the handles out. Great video!!
Kevin, thank you for your feedback! I used the fire black gasket for the lid and the handles.

Thank You Eric!!
Since the griddle doesn't really rely on the center grate, you could just remove it when you open the sear plate and use the griddle.
You are absolutely correct. Someone else pointed that out to me. It didn’t occur to me!🤷🏻♂️
Absolutely the best video. I have seen. I love my pit boss.
Mike!! Thank you so much!!

Looking forward to doing this all to mine good job sir
Thank You BR!! I’d love to se what you do!!
I open the diffuser at 400° and above
excellent detail, great video.
Bravo sir.
Thank you so much!!🙏🏼🙏🏼
Very good video.
Thank You Gator!!
Actually I had just bought one from PBR an even got a heat deflector mod for mine and also from pittboss themself had purchased the WiFi Bluetooth controller for my Austin XL .Thinking I’m all set
Just came across this love the changes was wondering the heat diffuser over the fire pot where you got it the ebay link doesn't have it any longer
Paul, that link seems to come and go. I’ve found it available a couple time since. I will post and let you know when it’s available again. Thank You for following.

Love the hooks!
Monica! They work really well!!
Luckily the newer smokers fixed the flat mounting bracket problem, and now both sides are rounded to match the shield shape.
Yes!!!
Enjoyed the video but can’t find any of these parts.
Thank you so much! I believe the only part that’s been available off and on is the diffuser. Which parts are you looking for? Maybe I can find a link for you.

Is SM Tech still around? I've been waiting to see if they sell their flame tamer but I can't find their website anywhere.

On replacing the hard mounted thermometer on the door - Why do you think the Tel-Tru thermometer is more accurate than the stock gauge? Did you do some testing?
Craig, thank you for your question. I did do some testing to confirm what I suspected. Here is a link to the test

@@thisgrilllife7447 I'm watching a bunch of videos on the pit boss, trying to decide whether to get 1, been using my weber kettle with a slow.n.sear insert, looks like they have made some improvements on current models. Thanks again 👍
@@stevebraswell9942 For the price, pit boss offers great products. If I was looking to buy a new pellet smoker and was willing to spend more money than the pit boss,
I would probably look at rec tec.
Again, for the price, pit boss offers an outstanding product
You rock, nice mods!!
Paul!!! I appreciate that brother!!
I’ve really enjoyed getting my grill dialed in.
Great information! The gaskets, was one packet enough?
Jonathan!! Thank you for your feedback.
Yes one package of the gasket was enough. With some leftover
1:47 No need to cut that grate in the pellet box. It comes out with, I think 6 screws. Just be sure and keep fingers out while it's plugged in.
You are correct. I chose to cut it because I was concerned about structural integrity when hopper is full. Probably would not make a difference but that was my reasoning.
