How To Bullet Proof Your Smoker or Grill

  • In todays video we will be looking at some products to turn your grill or smoker into a smoke and heat tight machine! Any smoke or heat coming out anywhere other than the smoke stack means your smoker is running less efficient than it can be.
    My goal for this video was:
    1. Seal up the smoker so smoke only exits out the top stack
    2. Try out some mods from "Smokes like a Boss" to even out the temperatures inside the barrel. (When we did the biscuit test in our last video the right side of the smoker was a lot hotter than the left side)

    These are the things I like! Upgrading, tweaking and working with your materials, instead of buying a new one. 👍

    Those smoke like a boss products deliver as promised. 💯
    But be prepared to wait around 3+ weeks after ordering for delivery

    I put some lava lock in my 1150 recently and for some reason the section I put by the hinges got smashed it and smeared like it almost melted or something. The other 3 sides are perfect. I also put a small square of lava lock under the logo In the center because it was leaking smoke. My temps have been way better also with the smoke like a boss mods. Left probe deflector was a littler hard for me to install. Now my sear drip pan sits crooked lol. I put the Heat tamer left to right and get better results than front to back, front to back gave me a 8-10 degree higher hot spot in the center just like yours

      Good info. So far I'm loving these mods! I'll try adjusting the heat tamer.

    I use a 1m x 1m x 6mm welding blanket as insulation to conserve a little fuel.

    Would love to see the exact same potato and probe experiment with the 2 deflectors removed. Before and after… the heat deflector mod is nice and custom cut etc. the heat pot diffuser is piece of metal, bent twice, for $36…. Would like to see IF they are helping.

    Hey Serg I just got a pitboss competetion series 1250. Are there any vent mods for controlling smoke from this pit since it doesn't have a smoke stack?

    Interesting video, thanks for all the input
    I’ve done all these to my 1150 pro series and my hot spot is to the left still actually
    Any other ideas to try and get temperature more even across the grates

      Interesting. Still to the left? I found the Smokes like a boss flame tamer helped out the most but my left side was slighly cooler.

    Do they make a tape for the comp series for the barrel? Lose alot thru there.

    Strong magnet with a piece of lava lock gasket works great to seal the probe hole. Easier to remove & replace too.

    Will the heat deflector mod work on the pro series 850?

    Anyone do any mods to their pitboss vertical 7 series smoker? A video on that would be nice.

    How would you bullet proof the Competition Series Rolling lid?

    So thinking if u took that plate newr the temp probe back out it would probably even out temps all across the grill. Give it a try since u didnt mount it permanently.

    I ordered the linked o-rings and a got a bag of tiny ones. Can you post the dimensions of what you ordered so that I can find it? I’ll post a picture in your Facebook group too.

    What if you turned that fire box heat deflector 99 degrees to blow out the left and right, as opposed to the front and back and added a lip on the right side to push more heat toward the left?

    • @GrillSergeant
      @GrillSergeant  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking about something like that. I'll have to give it a try.

    Decent vid BUT... Me being honest my smoker isn't losing smoke to the point where I need this. Low & slow is the point of smoking. The small openings aren't affecting my smoke rings/flavor profiles so badly that I need to do all this but thanks for the info.

      The build quality on the new Pit Boss Pro Series 1150 is insane. Worth checking out at Lowe’s David.

    Question - I have a Pitboss 1600 Pro. It has a gasket already but still leaks smoke. Would the lava rock tape help?

    • @jtplumbing6592
      @jtplumbing6592 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, I have the same smoker. If the gasket it comes with is wearing out, you would need to buy the same type of gasket tape to replace it.

      I've seen some on our Pit Boss Facebook Group (link in description) use LavaLock to shield the probe from the side walls. Gonna try that out soon as well.

    Do you really think that this little bit of smoke is going to makea difference

    • @GrillSergeant
      @GrillSergeant  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, but more so for trapping heat and stabilizing temperatures.

    The weight of the lid will be on the tape regardless of where it's attached!!!

    • @GrillSergeant
      @GrillSergeant  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you attached your tape to the barrel of your smoker. LoL All good, I’m just stating what’s said in the LavaLock directions. Don’t shoot the messenger :)
