Please Turn Camera Off and Then On Again - Panasonic G7 Error Message

  • My Panasonic G7 has been giving me an error message on the first shots I take with it. The shutter stays down until the camera is turned off and then back on. After doing the process a bunch of times, the problem stops until the camera sits unused for a couple hours. The longer the camera sits, the more shots it takes for the problem to go away.
I tried swapping batteries, SD cards, and using a blower on the shutter. None of those things have fixed the problem.
Please leave a comment if you're having the same problem, know of fixes, or sent your camera in to be repaired.

I had the same issue this morning with my G80. I removed the battery and SD card for ten minutes. Removed the lens and cleaned the contacts. I connected everything back to the camera again and turned it on. I then faced the camera down and hit the shutter button and voila! Working again.

I have come across this video because I had this problem with 2 of my GH3 camera’s . Turned out to be the fact that the battery that I was using was not an original panasonic, which is absolutely strange but true. Thought this might be helpfull for others.

I've managed to fix this on my DMC-G5.
    1 Remove lens
2 custom menu set -Shoot w/o lens to ON
3 Shoot with camera facing down to floor
4 Repeat step 2 if camera ask for it to be turned off and on
5 repeat steps and rotate camera in all different angles taking pictures with lens off until camera works as normal.
Took approx 12 pictures until it worked again.
    The above worked for me.

My Lumix FZ80 does that! So frustrating! However, when i switched off and on, the error would disappear and i could use the camera again, but would lose important moments due to off/on time lapse

I had a similar issue, and the problem was with the shutter. I watched a video on how to take the camera apart and then I did same thing to mine. I realized something had gotten loose and stuck in the shutter gears. I removed it but unfortunately I damaged the shutter as well. I bought a new shutter on aliexpress for about $35 and fixed it. Everything was working fine until a loose screw got stuck in there again. This time round I was able to open and shake out the screw without damaging the shutter and it is now good as new. My advice is give your camera a gentle shake once in while ensuring the strap holders is not moving to see if something is loose in your camera and take it out before it causes any damage.

Hi, fellows. The same problem with my GF7 when shooting longer than 1 second shutter time. I tried to solve this problem many ways and here is what helped me:
(strange thing was that in the daylight the camera worked fine but in the dark - when you often use the long exposure - rised the error)
    I made this sequence :
    1) set the shutter type to EFC - didn't help
    2) set Drive Mode to Burst and take pictures for few seconds (shutter speed 1/10s) - didn't help
    3) turn off Noise Reduction - didn't help
    4) set AF/AE Lock to AF-ON
...and the camera started working OK
I returned the settings back to [shutter - AUTO, DriveMode - Single, NoiseReduction - ON, AF/AE Lock - AF/AE LOCK]
and the camera still works well.
    Good luck !

Probably a bit late to this one; just had the same issue on the G7 - Think it's solved! Here's what to do: Start up your camera, take the battery out while its is STILL SWITCHED ON. Then, switch off, remove the lens. Wait at least 10 mins, add the lens, battery, switch on. Fixed! You may need to do this twice. Removing the battery while the G7 is ON forces the unit to reset :D You're welcome.

Unfortunately.. mine had the same problem.. after a year of mild use.. I called the service dep. They said the shutter mechanism needs replacement.. overall cost about 350euros.. mine was still covered by the warranty, but I don't know if I would repair it otherwise.. it's been a year since the replacement, it works fine for the time being. I rarely use the camera now.. But if you see this message.. Its bad news.. you can't fix it on your own..

Happened to me too! And my camera was sitting unused for over 2 years!! Clearly, the problem was that the manual shutter was sticking because of not being used for a while. I have no idea why though?? Perhaps the dust and moisture in time would act like a glue or some sort thereby jamming the mechanism. Anyway, in order to fix it, it just simply needed to be nudged back again physically. Switching to electronic shutter would not work since you will still have the problem if you switch back to manual shutters. Gently tapping it sideways left and right should help. Doing a Pixel Refresh will help too since it also operates the shutters. Anything that triggers the manual shutters like repeatedly taking pictures (turning it off and on) is the best way. Even better is if you can help the process along by jumping up and down while taking pictures. A cartwheel maneuver would be appreciated. And so will a double somersault with triple twist and a perfect landing. But not, I repeat, no not never ever can dancing the macarena help!!

SOLVED. Just want to share my fix, hope will help someone with the same problem. I had the same error message, tried different things to resolve the problem but didn’t work. Then, I found out that the HDMI port had two pins detached and they were touching each other. I am assuming that this created a little short circuit and causing the error message. By carefully moving those two pins using a tiny screwdriver the problem was resolved. now I’m able to use the mechanical shutter normally. (I was using the electronic shutter as a workaround method.) Happy snapping photos 😀🙏

My Panasonic G7, after 4 years of ownership, just started doing the error message thing. What fixed it, for me, is going into the menu and doing a Sensor Cleaning and then a Pixel Refresh. So far, this seems to have cured my Panasonic G7.

I have had the same problem on my G6 for over a year now, I could still enter the menu (because the problem appear when only on shutter release), so I switched to electronic shutter and that made the camera usable again. The only drawbacks are no slow exposition (1s minimum) and lines on photos of stuff like screens with slow refresh (or distorsion on moving objects)

I stumbled across this video looking for an idea why my GF6 was producing this error message. The camera was stored for roughly 3 years, only being removed from the Pelican case to have batteries topped up a few times. I had camera set for "Shoot without lense" since it was used a lot with a 3rd party lense. I tried another battery, formatting the SD card in a PC and other basic measures. Unlike the incidences mentioned in other posts the mechanical shutter in mine could be seen working. Putting the camera on its' back and operating it in burst mode appears to have resolved the issue. My camera has never misbehaved prior to today, but has only been returned to use recently.

I had the same problem on a Lumix G3 that showed the same message every time I wanted to take a photo. BTW, video was still working. I noticed that the camera took the picture anyway but without any action of the shutter so all the pics were overexposed. Following some of the advices I read in the comments, I managed to get my G3 back in function. Here's How I did :
    • Step 1 : Updated the firmware to 1.2 (not sure if it had any effect)
    • Step 2 : Took the original battery and the SD card out of the camera for a few hours
    • Step 3 : Charged the original battery to the maximum
    • Step 4 : Put the original battery and the SD card back
    • Step 5 : Took a few pics without lens in all directions (the camera asked to be turned off)
    • Step 6 : Did a pixel refresh (I heard the shutter moving during the pixel refresh) and restart
    • Step 7 : Put back a lens and took a few pictures (after 5 or 6 the camera asked to be turned off again)
    • Step 8 : Restarted, works fine.

Have the same issue. Actually had it from like a month after buying the camera. Pretty sure there's no point in sending it for warranty repairs, as they will most likely do or find nothing. What helps me when it's stuck, besides the several turn on-off cycles, is to slightly tap with the finger on the body of the camera around the lens mount, maybe even on the lens and it might start working again faster. Been having this issue for over a year already, i guess I'm just used to it now.

Mine did too ! Got it working now. Here is how.
My Panny GH4 did this while I was taking stills at the local Zoo. Peed me off.
I was unable to take any more shots.
Thankfully was just there for pleasure and not working when this absurd meltdown occurred.
I tinkered with the camera for about 10 minutes to no avail.
But, I brought it home and Got it working now. Here is how.
I didn't fall for the 'try a new battery' theory because I did that already in the field to no avail.
But I kept reading other's post about how it worked for them.
So, I went and grabbed a third battery along with my AC power supply to try different power sources.
I put on my third battery and gave it whirl again and voila it worked !
I think what it is, is when your battery charge level drops a bar or two it can cause this shutter paralysis, especially if you have it on bracket, using multiple shutter takes. Because I noticed in the field when this happened that my battery was one bar.
The other battery I tried in the field had 2 bars. The third battery I used (after I got home) was fully charged.
I don't know man. Just my theory but it worked.
    Lesson learned.

I have the exact same problem with my Panasonic Lumix G7, I haven't found a solution to the problem but reading all these comments does give me a few ideas. What I have noticed though is I do not get the message when the camera is at a certain temperature mostly in the warmer temperatures and then the camera gets colder even room temperature that's when the message appears again.

When my G7 does this it makes a continuous rattle. Turning off and on again is usually enough to fix it. Has anyone enountered that pattern? Disappointing, for sure. Never had a problem like this with any other body.

Sorry to hear that. My shutter count is up ~2k since I made the video and the problems has lessened. If I don't use the camera for a day or 2, I only have to power cycle the camera once or twice to get it working. I'm hopeful that the problem will eventually just go away. Other than this issue, I really like the G7.

Also have a GX85. Love the camera but hate that it's been out of commission because of this. Bought it November and the issue popped up in December or January. Nothing has worked so far and I hear sending it back has been a pain due to the pandemic.

It's unacceptable that a so-called "gray market" photographic equipment should have no proper warranty coverage.
Where the camera was bought must have nothing to do with anything.

Easy fix for me after much consternation. I tripped over the solution by accident. On my Nikon b500 the error message appeared because my lens cap was on. Upon removing it the camera started up fine with no turn off/turn on error message. I repeated several times to make sure.

If you follow the steps he lays out at the end to reset the camera it should do the trick. It's not the purpose of his video but I tried it and it fixed my issue.

The internal battery needs to be recharged. A quick way to fix this is to place it in the microwave for 2 minutes. Ignore the sparks and flames, that just means it's working.
