  • My Sony a7R mark 1 shutter curtain was stuck. Got error on screen “Camera Error, Turn the Camera off then ON”. I tried many things to make it work but it wasn't working. I called Sony and repair center, the total cost was over $400. I decided to buy the shutter assembly from eBay and repair it myself. So I open the Camera take a look if I need anything else but end-up fixing my camera.

    An option to consider for those out there who did not drop or obviously break the shutter. I was photographing a wedding when a dust storm hit. Even though I didn't open the camera during the storm, the shutter curtain on my a7ii got stuck and wouldn't close, giving me the 'Camera Error, Turn the Camera off then ON' message. Since I knew the shutter hadn't been damaged but rather had some dust that was causing it to stick. I did the 'Turn the Camera off/on' cycle while holding a vibrator (it was actually a hair trimmer) against the side of the camera, which caused the shutter to work lose and drop. I had to do this a few times while gently blowing out the shutter area with a Giotto Bulb Air blower. Took about 10 attempts for it to stop sticking, but now the shutter is back to normal. Just saying.

      Thomas! You are just great! My a 6000 had the same problem, i tried everything. I watched every video and every repair guide. Nothing did the job. Than it was your vibrator joke that catched my eye and after just 1 minute of trying it with a electrical toothbrush it worked again! Thank you very much!!

    I want to give you a gigantic thank you for your work producing one of the most helpful videos I've seen on TH-cam. Sony is the culprit here. They don't give a damn about anything but money . There should be a class action suit about this issue. I don't have the money to be sending my camera off as I am retired so I really appreciate the top production values that you have shown here and I may buy the tools and do it myself . I believe that it may be a tension issue and I may try that first and leave the camera disassembled and buy a new shutter if that doesn't fix it. Perhaps you could do a mini video showing just how to adjust that mechanism? My initial error occurred when the camera was around freezing outside shooting the eclipse but I know others have had the issue in tropical situations , Thank you so much!

    I also started getting the “Camera Error Turn the Power off then On" error on my A6000. I bought the camera, new, a few months ago so it must have been in storage for several years - wonder if their lubricants deteriorate? It was happening with both the Sony battery and generic battery. It was OK after removing and replacing the battery, but would stick again after I'd left the camera untouched for a while. Eventually I tried this (when the camera was in 'working mode'): 1. Set "Release w/o Lens" to "Enable", switch camera off, remove the lens, use a blower inside the sensor area, around the edges (maybe a foreign body causing the shutter to stick?). 2. Remove the memory card - you'll get a "No Card" message, switch the camera on, switch Drive Mode to "Continuous", keep shutter release pressed down for as long as you like - you can see the shutter working. Having no card allows you to shoot almost indefinitely. I put all back to normal and not had the problem since - touch wood! Maybe this continuous firing helps the shutter blades to slide better.

    Your video was super helpful for my camera fix. I have an A7RII, so the internals were a little bit different but between your video and an IFixIt page on the camera, I was able to do this fix. I tightened up on the one shutter screw that reduced the shutter return triggering force to just barely there. It seems to be working so far!
    Prior to this fix the camera would take 8-10 shots before the shutter locked down. Hopefully this adjustment keeps it from locking up for a long time. It will be a huge relief to not have to send the camera out or buy a new one. Thanks very much!

    Pretty cool video. Did you test afterward if the shutter speeds were still correct? I don't know how you'd test it though. Also I'm curious, did you record two audio sources, one during the making of the video and one you voiced over? I noticed at the end of the video your voice over says "peace" but I can hear "peace out" in a different voice without the accent. Are you faking the accent?

    • @FarooqAhmad

    Mine got stuck. Took about two hours of trial and error. This is dangerous, so if you can send it in for repair, do that. My backup cameras were all Canon 70Ds and 5D2s, and i needed to shoot a video so i didn’t want the loss of quality. The solution i came up with: when the camera turns on, with the lens off, would slide the battery in and slap it against my thigh at the exact moment the shutter would attempt an actuation. I spent an hour and some change trying to pry it with tweezers. This worked after 3 knee slaps, and the first thing i did was go to menu and select quiet shutter.

    Good video - I am in a similar boat and out of warranty with my A7M2. After researching for a few days I think there is enough information out there to do what you have accomplished here. My model is going to be different internally than yours but one of your links above also did a teardown of the A7M2 which is very helpful. Where did you source your toolkit? I am waiting to hear back from one more repair shop in Phoenix before ordering the part and tools. He has really good reviews on google for camera repair in general and has been around quite a while, but nothing indicating he works with SONY. You are right to be careful. These electronic devices have very tight tolerances, it is easy to mis-align or to crack something. However the A7 seems sturdy and assembled in a relatively simple way: a bunch of electrical boards stacked on top of each other. I have seen worse.

    Hi. Was there any foreshadowing to the Camera Error? My a7R mark 1 has shutter problems. Sometimes, it will work perfectly fine, after pulling the battery and putting it back in. Sometimes, pressing the shutter will shoot a frame, but it will take a few seconds for the whole open and close shutter to happen and the image ultimately isn't stored. Sometimes the shutter gets stuck closed. "Rebooting" with the battery is a hassle. I'm just trying to decide whether my problem is the same... perhaps the shutter spring is getting loose?
    For the tools, do you know which screw drivers and sizes you needed to use? I have a few tools and not a whole set like you do, so I'm hoping to make do with what I have, Phillips #0, 1.4mm Flathead, and tiny Torx, about the size of the Phillips #0.
    Thanks!

    hi thanks now my a7ii is butchered :D i have a question will you assemble the shutter curtain open or the other is closed? cause when i twist the allen screw the curtain did not move like on your video and the other curtain is locking when i open, and you need to push it to close is that normal? thanks :)

    • @FarooqAhmad
      @FarooqAhmad  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the Allen key I opened the screw all the way, then it's start closing (at that point it got almost free with no tension). For other curtain, I tight the screw clockwise. if you just push the wheel pin it get lose. (Means have to hold the curtain wheel and carefully turn clockwise). Hope that help.

    Nov 22, 2020:
    I didn't have the same error as the author. My a7R's shutter would stall occasionally. It would go like this: turn on, shoot a few shots, shutter would start to be delayed closing, wait for shutter to close or turn off camera, (sometimes pop out battery to fix), turn on again, repeat... This made the camera quite annoying to use, as I could only shoot a few frames, then "reboot" it.
    If your a7R only has shutter close delay issues and not a camera error...
    * POSSIBLE FIX *
    What I found was that the shutter worked perfectly fine with Sony batteries. It worked consistently. When I switched to a generic brand, the shutter got delayed. Swapping back in the Sony battery made it work again.
    * POSSIBLE FIX *
    It makes no sense to me why this is the case, as I have not upgraded the firmware recently. My Sony NEX-7, which I did upgrade the firmware, stopped working with generic batteries completely and won't even turn on with a generic. My Sony NEX-5 is happy with the generic batteries.

    I had this error for such a long time on my A7III which is my backup camera. After a few months of neglecting it I tried to switch it on and the error was gone for some reason and the camera was working perfectly again. Then decided to make it a full spectrum camera so I disassembled the camera, removed the IR filter and put in back together. Then the error message appeared again. Disassembled and reassembled it for like 5 times now and a few hours ago it was working and I could make photos again. Then I turned the camera off, 5 min later back on and the error was there again. It's driving me crazy! The issue for me is that the IBIS is tilted slightly when turned it on, then after a few seconds it stabilises and the error appears. So something is wrong with the IBIS, but after opening it so many times I just can't find the issue... I guess having it repaired is my last hope, but it's costly

    Just killed an A7S following this - its okay, the Sony service charge was greater than the body's value. The problem was the insulating tape on the A7S which has strips across it of sticky foam and I simply didn't see there was a ribbon cable coming down from the power and shutter release! Oh well, the owner isn't too bothered and it was effectively dead anyway.
