Inside America's Only Beluga Caviar Farm

- We visited the only caviar farm in the United States legally allowed to breed beluga sturgeon. Russian immigrant Mark Zaslavsky brought live beluga into the country in 2003, just before the US government banned imports of the species in 2005.
Beluga sturgeon are native to the Caspian Sea, and are classified as critically endangered by the World Wildlife Fund.
The farm breeds five different types of sturgeon, some of which don’t take as long to mature as beluga, which allows the company to harvest their eggs for caviar and take them them to market.
Zaslavsky has pledged, as part of his agreement with the US government, to donate fertilized beluga eggs in the hopes that they will eventually strengthen the population of beluga in the wild.

At least this guy takes care of his fish, sells his product sustainably, and is contributing to the repopulation effort.
I should hope so! He essentially has a government sanctioned monopoly on the market.

Or sharks makes them look big... just sayin'
I think he means that since the sturgeon is kinda related or kinda looks like a shark, that since it kinda a shark and it small, it makes sharks look small
Then they continued to say 9 feet. I was like "bruh a sharks dick is 9ft. Tf you mean"

When I was a child I ate an entire jar of Beluga Caviar while visiting my grandmother. My parents had chosen a much simpler lifestyle so I didn’t realize how costly it was. I just knew it was good on the toast her chef had made it on. So when I found the little jar I went to town; assuming there were a couple so it would be fine. I realized even back then; I had eaten over $1000 on under 30 minutes.
I love this dude. He respects the species and plans for the future with repopulation. All in the same time making his share with selling the caviar in a sustainable manner. I have nothing but love and respect for this guy

Absolutely agree. Not worth the money
It’s a very acquired taste. The price is just stupid though.
@@sorenkair 😂
He just saved an entire species.
Some of you might not know, but we also have this kind of similar situation, we have a seed vault, which is the _Svalbard Global Seed Vault_ , where all the seeds from different plants in different countries all over the world have been stored as a stock/copy in case of a disaster. The Seed Vault is located on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, near Longyearbyen, in the remote ArcticSvalbard archipelago, approximately 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) from the North Pole.
I think saying he saved an entire species is far-fetched. His efforts are admirable, and so is his aim, but I dont think an issue of extinction is simply solved by donation of eggs to their native habitat.
Even if he did save them he's doing it for the money, not for the love of nature. It's all for the money kiddo
@@evilpimp2475 you wrong
@@p_antera2023 tell me he isn't selling that caviar for big bucks. If he was hunble and did it purely for the love of nature he wouldn't sell shit

On my bucket list is to eat caviar atleast once in my life.
Edit: I just tried caviar for the first time. My taste buds were crying, while my brain was telling me that its delicate
Supah H you’ll probably be disappointed. I tried it for the first time a few years back and it really reminds me of very small and salty grapes with far less flavor. An acquired taste I suppose.

Morshu there is a right way to eat fish fetus?
This is one of my favorite videos on TH-cam, no lie.
What you people don’t realize is how poorly these monsters are kept. The tanks are too small or too crowded for these fish and if you don’t believe me look at the fins and how deformed they are from swimming in circles for years.
now we need hecker farms
Is no one going to talk about how my man uses the stripping method, i hope more people use it. I know it's only for the ones that are alive but still it's a start sense it's not widely used in the U.S
I think he's only using the stripping method for the Beluga but not the Ostera or Sveruga. Makes sense though, Beluga takes a long time to mature compared to the latter. LStripping eggs in that manner can yield damaged ones, but in return he can keep having the fish produce more and doesn't need to wait another 10+ years for beluga eggs.
Is there any way we can use this method for "other" purposes?

Russia and Iran: It's free real estate
I don't eat caviar or even fish but this was interesting! Best thing is he's trying to bring back this species in the Caspian sea!
Beluga and other sturgeon in the Caspian Sea are endangered as a result of years of rampant overfishing and pollution mainly due to Russian oil production, and damming of the home rivers of the fish. There are incredible obstacles to saving the species, they will likely become extinct in their native habitat soon.

A fluke hurricane this is stupid hurricanes every year
Mad respect for this guy
I'm so glad he's giving back
Too bad they show the caviar being scooped with a metal spoon there.
Just like with diamonds, caviar is also artificially expensive. Through careful regulation that's how the price is determined. Both could be much less expensive.
Then everyone would be buying it and sturgeon would be overfished into extinction due to a now lucrative market. Diamonds are another case, and it’s simply not comparable to to the case of caviar.
Except this caviar comes from an Endangered Species, which except for this one farm is only available on the black market. Rarity justifies price, at least for people who enjoy the flavor.
