You can still get these fairly cheap in the US and parts of Asia, I've never thought of Oysters as a luxury food at all, more of a southern treat.
If ya buy them direct from fisherman still in the shell they are way cheaper than the rip off that the company's charge for in the markets

Oyster farming really has very few critics and those who do usually aren’t aware of how it’s done. Not only are the practices and presence of the oysters good for the waters, the required habitat has oyster farmers actively protecting these areas from pollution and development.

Indeed. Oyster farming doesn't pollute the ocean. More precisely, it can't, categorically. Oysters are filter feeders, and polluting the ocean they grow on is to taint the very product that feeds on the water. So much so that some cities with a huge oyster industry will spam public bathrooms all over the place to stop passersby from "doing their business" in the sea.

When I lived in China a few years back, you can get grilled oysters with garlic sauce for about 1 dollar apiece. Used to eat a dozen of them with Qingdao beer on street corners all over Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Some of the best midnight snacking I've ever had, next to Chinese Hot Pot, Japanese Ramen and Mexican Menudo.

Where I live on the east coast of the US oysters are still pretty darn cheap (probably due to our county being a large producer of farmed oysters), the volunteer fire departments on occasion has an all you can eat oyster roast (they are steamed not roasted despite the name).
Oyster is a common dish in restaurants here in the Philippines. A kilogram of live oyster costs around a dollar. A 1.5 pound serving of steamed oyster (which I love) cost about 1.8 dollars.
I work in a restaurant as a dishwasher and I once read the menu of the prices of oyster and it was $18.99 for 7 oysters cook or raw and some people don’t even finish there food

I LOVE to eat oysters especially with hot sauce. I don't like opening the shells because I accidentally hurt myself or sometimes its too hard for me because they're shut tight. I have to get them preopened or canned. In my city we have oyster fests once a year. The local community come together in one spot to eat.
It has shocked me when I met some people who's never tried oysters before and even said they tasted awful. And also I think it depends on where you go to get them. My mom really loves seafood so she knows all the places to get them cheap!

Oysters are a street food her in Trinidad and Tobago (the carribean) always an oyster cocktail vendor nearby
I ate half a dozen Loch Fyne oysters last weekend. 2 straight-up, 1 with a wasabi+cucumber+mirin seasoning, 1 with red wine vinegar+ shallots, and 2 with Tabasco mixed with a tiny bit of agave nectar of all things.
They were all fantastic. But I have to say that the tobasco one was my favourite. It had everything- the lovely saltiness and amazing flavour of the oyster, paired with heat and sourness from the tobasco, and a very subtle sweetness from the added agave nectar.
Loch Fyne and other Atlantic oysters (and ones from the North Sea, and i suppose it's technically the Hebridean sea with the Loch Fyne oysters) taste different from one's I've had in the US, even on the east coast. They taste sweeter in the US, and a LOT sweeter on the West Coast.
One is not better than the other, they're just different, and all so good in their own ways.

this is what i dont get in fancy restaurants. at our province, my uncles harvest these oysters filling up 1~2 sacks each harvest. we boil and eat the oyster with vinegar and calamansi. then when i went to the city, these oysters were overly priced.

What bothers me the most about summer is that when I go to the shore line looking for mussels, I always end up with more oysters than mussels.. It takes me only a few minutes to fill up an entire bucket. So I have absolutely no idea why these are supposedly expensive.

Yummie! We have oysters around 2-3 times per week. Not many, usually 1-2 per serving. But because we don‘t drink alcohol anymore, we can now spend the money for oysters and caviar instead.
