Here in iraq we have eaten white truffles for decades, it can be harvested in the desert after rain storms so it is pretty hard to get sometimes, the price is around 10$ per kg but can go much higher depending on availability, i can describe the taste as mushrooms and meat infused together, eating it fresh is a whole new world for sure, just wanted to share the experience with you all.

I own five restaurants and used to work in nadaman. It’s Japan’s most famous first class restaurant chain. I’ve tasted it all from truffles to matsutake mushrooms to matsuzaka wagyu beef. Some of these ingredients are incredible but a LOT of them are just pretentious and people react to them because of the price. When we do a tasting for the staff, the chef will always mention the price first and where and how difficult it was obtained. I find it funny when people overreact to food that taste okay but acts like it came from heaven. 😂

My husband said to me the other day it probably tastes just ok but people go crazy over it because of the price. Same with these. I've never tasted them and have always wanted to. @@cassandraDify depends. If you like fire grilled steaks then i absolutely prefer an american porterhouse or ribeye. Wagyu taste too uh clean for a better word. BUT if you like dishes like wagyu tataki or gyu sashimi(beef sashimi) or wagyu being used with combinations like seasonal vegetables or marinated in signature sauces. Personally, i prefer shabu shabu or wagyu sushi. Wagyu steak is overrated unless done by a master who knows how to dry age it to perfection. Don’t fall for those roppongi 200 dollarteppan steaks cooked in front of you. They’re just a show. Not worth the price.

I once had a piece of truffle when I was at a fancy party. I could hardly find any taste - veeeery subtle, I would say. Too bad I didn't really try to smell the piece. But I also have quite expensive truffle oil at home and so I think I know what it's supposed to be smelling and tasting when its ultra fresh.

I once had a piece of truffle when I was at a fancy party. I could hardly find any taste - veeeery subtle, I would say. Too bad I didn't really try to smell the piece. But I also have quite expensive truffle oil at home and so I think I know what it's supposed to be smelling and tasting when its ultra fresh.
I’m pretty sure truffle oil is just not truffle, but they try to recreate the taste of truffle, which makes the oil taste more intense and less authentic.

Actually many has tried and failed, but I believe I read somewhere truffle favour to grow under certain types of tree, so they planted that tree and yes they got truffle, but the volume produced so little and not economic for commercial scale.
