      Next Sunday we’re building the road crossing on the switch in yard inside. When the weather turns bad we go inside when it turns better we go outside! That’s the advantage of having a railroad that’s both in and outside

    You kidlets; aren't you so glad you're, over the top, enterprising? This seems to me, to be a whole lot of work for a hobbyist, in their early 20s, but Dale and Karen, you're plowing through your golden years and the energy level is remarkable. The results, however, are exhilarating. I always remember, my parents had often said, the family that can play together will stay together. The same can also be said about praying together. What a glorious project you've initiated, and it's obvious, that you're very pleased with the progression. So, keep up the wonderful effort.

    I love that Frosty the Snowman mail truck. All you need is a little Fred Astaire driving it and singing!
    Pressure treated wood is prone to twisting because there is so much moisture in it to start. In fact when we rebuilt our balcony I did a lot of research and a couple contractors said don’t use it for your posts because the bottom half can’t be tied together with a lateral rail as it rises above our patio and we need to walk under it. We used Douglas Fir which the previous owners used years before, and then Trex composite decking and their PVC railing and post covers. I think had your lamp posts been tied together with a lateral 2x4 and then the diagonal and horizontal pieces at the top had strong ties (brackets) connecting them with carriage bolts they would have not twisted.

    My mother had one of those wall hangings (the one with the hotel) in her house. Sadly I haven't seen it for years and it wasn't among her things when she passed. Still, seeing it brought back some fond memories. Thanks!

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one with the mill on it is the hard went to find. The one with the hotel in the western street is actually the easiest to find because that’s the one everyone loved! They’re all over eBay and they’re typically around $50, but the shipping is also about $50! Or score you can bag one with free shipping! Oddly enough those cost $100! So one way or the other if you’re going to spend 100 bucks on one of these things

It will block anything train at normal speed, and it is prototype accurate, at least for industrial narrow gauge. Best of it, it's cheap and quick to install.

    Dale, You have some of the neatest toys. Those locomotives that you own and show in this video are awesome. The moving linkages on steam locomotives are what I feel interests people on them. The larger the scale the more focal these parts become.
    The backdrops that you have are so neat. How do you find and come up with this stuff. It is a true gift. (Oh be the way it is the heat (the sun) heating up the water in the wood that causes all of the problems.) You and Karyn have are gifted (me not so much) (I usually have to redo things two or three times till I am satisfied . How does Karyn come up with the one line responses to you....

      On my old railroad I had two trains that ran on batteries. One of which was a rail bus. And that one got more use than any other thing on the entire railroad because I could just set it on the track and forget about it. If I wanted to run the throttle I could but generally I just turn it on and let it run around for a couple hours till the batteries went flat.

    Dale, I two have a USA trains Rotary Plow and have used it to plow snow. It will throw snow properly but I have encountered a few issues when doing so.
    1 - The motor does not have enough oomph to clear more than lightly packed snow 1" or less deep.
    2 - The mechanism does not gain enough speed to throw properly at voltages which allow for realistic control of the pusher locomotive.
    I'd suggest as part of your rebuild project add both a beefier motor and make the thing battery powered, radio controlled using the tender as battery storage.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My original plan back when I bought this 25 years ago Ir so was to put a heavier motor and a rechargeable motorcycle battery in there! But now with DCC I’m thinking of running it off of DCC so that I can turn the rotor on and off and even change directions from the controller. But I still will probably want to put a much heavier motor in there

      The backdrop buildings look great. I'm sure, with your skills, you can come up with something very similar at a fraction of the cost to fill in more of the backdrop. In the UK, on outdoor layouts that use tar paper, they seem to favour the heavier type that you torch onto the wood to stop it lifting. Very picturesque with the snow too

    @slam854 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was so curious about this project, almost thought you had given up on it. Should have known better. Your solution on the decking is exactly what I was thinking of. FYI, on my Honda Super Cub I stained and urethaned OSB platform which shoulders the strapping for my saddlebags. The OSB is double zip tied to the luggage rack beneath. It is 1 1/2yrs of use and looks like the day I put in on. Same treatment for an outdoor table whose glass top fractured. I set my astronomy gear on this treated OSB insert. Lifts out and stores in the garage. The urethane is a water based coating which holds up extremely well.
    Your layout is coming together very nicely and looks wonderful. Can hardly wait for it to be done.

      Cut off the red and black sleeves on the top side track power. You can mix powdered pigments to the color you need with silicone caulking. That will give you a color matched waterproof seal on your eyelets.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep the plan now is to go back and paint out the colors on those connections. And then the entire track is going to be ballasted in brown aquarium gravel. It’s too expensive to use on the ground level rail road but up here the fact is it’s a nice clean wash product that easily moves around makes it perfect. Also if the brown is readily available and even 35 pound bags for not a lot of money. So that should look good and will cover up all the red and black wires and all I need to hide are the spade logs

    Here Long Island New York we use a lot of ‘pressure-treated’ lumber and plywood. It stays sturdy no matter water, winds, freezing or sunlight. It’s guaranteed to last for 30 years. And yes, we do sometimes suffer 100 degree weather.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s just the warping that’s giving me a problem. I think the wood was not seasoned very well if at all.

      @@ToyManTelevision - I use 3/4 inch pressure treated plywood and it has never warped. But there are probably other companies selling them where you live with different chemicals applied within.
      I love your outside layout so far.

  • @peterfarrington3702
    @peterfarrington3702 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi folks, I wish my weather problem was a lot of sun but unfortunately my problem is the normal UK weather system of plenty of rain and at the moment my outside layout is under 2 inches of snow which for a '00 gauge' 1:76 scale is a bit of problem at the moment. I see you have used a similar deck construction to the one I have used, roofing felt is excellent to protect the timber deck, mine uses 3 inch treated fence posts and the deck is 6 inch by 1 inch treated timber which I coated with a bitumen coating and then covered it with left-over roofing felt from when I recovered my wife's garden shed, never throw anything away as it will be useful one day. I am assuming you are now a mature person so the height of track bed is rather important, I am 75 so my track varies between 3 foot 6 inches and 4 foot above the ground so my arthritic knees don't suffer too much. Good luck with the progression, I am sure it is going to give many hours of enjoyment when it is "finished".

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Yeah that one mogul it’s in the video is my oldest Mogul. It started off in life is what I like to call the circus mogul! But it’s that very first one with the really bright red color. So where the paint is scratch to see bright red plastic underneath there. For quite some time I had it dressed out for Rio Grande Southern. Anyway repainted it about 20 years ago to Colorado central. The stack is brass I don’t remember who made it but it was a brass casting that you could buy. Reworked the pilot with just some sheet plastic and stuff. The coal bunker ditto it’s all just cheap plastic form in to hold actual coal. Usually runs really well but as it hadn’t moved in 20 years it has a bit of a hitch to it’s get along. Just needs a little running in and I think but maybe some lubrication?

      @ToyManTelevision  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Given my track plan I only need to reverse direction to go back inside the building. Moreover I wanted to be able to use the double track section as a passing track. So it’s a little bit diabolical. But the entire eastbound mean between the switches and including the switches will be at the reverse loop. That way I can take a train all the way around the West Loop, onto the double track, through the crossover and then back inside the garage without having to back in. Once inside I can turn the locomotive on the turntable. Certainly not the normal way of this would be done but if I have worked it out right and I sure hope I have, It will be great

    Officially sun kinks are called thermal misalignments. Lay track at the hottest ambient temperature of the region. On the real railroad they lay track and then heat the track with rail heaters. (let's say at Palm springs that would heat it to 122° and in Eugene Oregon they would lay it at 95°) then all's the track can do is shrink it cannot expand anymore. I don't know if there's an artificial way of you heating your track without damaging it.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And the idea of leaving the track outside in 105° heat doesn’t sound very appealing! So what I’m doing is just trying to predict the expansion based on my test piece that I put down earlier. Hopefully I’ve left it off gap and if not then I will fix it! I do know with the prototype rail I saw a very interesting video on this as their role in the rail they’re actually using two different kinds of metal in the inner core of metal is hardened as the outer core is rolled over it in under pressure sort of like priestess concrete. Anyway it helps prevent expansion and contraction

    Is 22 and 12 gauge wire too small? For my 2r o scale I am using 10 gauge bus and 14 gauge feed with connections every track section. In the past I used 12 and 16 and found the voltage drop was too high.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hum... don’t know. I’ve always used 12 gauge. The drops at so short (pun) that the drop seems nonexistent. I suspect if I ran 4 FAs that could be a problem. On my old railroad I also had the buss tied to power in three places. This will be different, fed from one point near the center.

    I looked through the comments so as not to repeat, so here goes. You mentioned waiting for the electrician to wire into the panel. Unless there is an ordinance that this must be done by a certified electrician you should be able to do this yourself since you do all the other wiring. I'm not a certified electrician but but back in the day I installed about 20 electric services, mostly 200 amp, got them inspected and the utility energized them. Wiring into the panel is a lot easier than running the circuit wiring.

    • @johnbenedict6703
      @johnbenedict6703 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had more to type but I hit the send arrow, sorry about that. Here's more. Take off the panel cover and check things out. Seems like wiring into the panel frightens most folks, just don't stand bare foot in a puddle of water on a concrete floor and you should be fine. Since this is for an outdoor circuit you will need to hookup to a Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) breaker. There should be at least one in the panel where receptacles close to water are connected (like bathroom and kitchen). However I would recommend that you put the new wire on its own dedicated circuit. You can take your time examining everything the panel before tinkering if you so choose. Advice can be had where you purchase you electrical supplies. For a new circuit you will need space in the panel, i.e. the bus bar. If none is available we're talking a sub feed panel here. That's a bit more complicated. Then you'll have to wait for your electrician when ever that happens. Good luck.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Yeah I am I’m a little hesitant to tie into the breaker box for a couple of different reasons. I have done that in the past but I always find it unnerving. But in this case I can’t find a main shut off for the breaker panel! I’m not sure about the electrician who put this in a few years ago, but I don’t see your main breaker. There must be one but there doesn’t appear to be one. So how do you work on a breaker panel if you can’t kill the power to it? Moreover what I’d like to do just kind of us a fun thing is I’ve got this old old old motor breaker for a huge industrial motor that’s in our Square D panel it’s really old and that’s hanging on the back of the building. So I brought the wires over to bear and what I’d like to do is tie that into this huge switch I’m turn the whole railroad on by throwing that switch. But I’m not sure that old panel is safe. And I have no idea how to hook that big switch into the breaker box. It used to be hooked to the breaker box until the cabling is all still there it’s just unhooked at the breaker box. But I can’t figure out how to shut off the power to the breaker box! And I’m not sure it’s safe to be using a big motor controller to turn on the lights in the backyard. Pretty sure it would be fine. Anyway I want to get a licensed electrician to do all of that I was supposed to meet blowing myself up!

    • @johnbenedict6703
      @johnbenedict6703 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToyManTelevision In my days of doing electrical work (on the side) I came across two instances where sub feed panels (one without a main breaker) were installed. Problem for me at least is add up all the breaker amps and that usually exceeds the capacity of the service entrance cable. Some places permit this, I'm not a fan. If that is the case at the Garage Hall (did I get that right?), there are two fixes best for someone with a little more experience. Install an appropriate breaker, i.e. 100 or 200 amp and run the service entrance cable through that and it will energize the bus bar or replace the panel with a dedicated main panel (that's a lot more of changing wires). In either case the electric meter will have to be pulled, of course, with the permission of the utility company since a seal will need to be cut. Here's good news, I'm finished buggy you about this, at least.
