Modeling Water on Bottleneck Creek - Testing Woodland Scenics Deep Pour Water on the test section

  • More testing for Bottleneck Creek, this week trying out Woodland Scenics deep pour water.
    While our creek and out test section for our creek is not at all deep, but we want to test this product even if other products would also work. In the past, we had used epoxy and polyester casting resin and had...well.. bad luck. One reason to try this product. But as it seems to be good, based on reviews, we needed to test it before using it at Bottleneck Creek.
    First much of what comes with the kit is poor (pour?) or useless. The gloves are poor, the mixing cups grand IF you can get the measurement decals on correctly. Which is really hard to do. Our plastic bag had a leak, but we had no idea what the bag was meant to do anyway. BUT.. the resin is GREAT. who cares about all that other stuff.
    The resin pours smoothly. Not too thick. NO STINK!!!! No smell at all in fact. Mixes well, and looks great. So we are sold. We will be using our own gloves, making sure to get the decal on correctly, or using a different measuring cup and taking care to NOT spill any on the landscaping.
    One of the keys to success is preparing the river, pond, or stream bed. As it shows every detail shows. Which is a good thing on a shallow pond or stream like ours. As this stuff HATES water, everything needs to be dry and clean. And that's about it. On to the REAL Bottleneck Creek.

    Hi Dale & Karyn. I’d recommend looking for different beaker sizes as you can get quality plastic ones. When I was doing film photography I had several of them so you wouldn’t need to use a large one. I would also suggest a syringe where you could be more precise. Doing that would eliminate your stick. The results are great! Perhaps you can cover your drips with patches of grass. Put a frog on top of a rock or few. The baby powder and matte white give great results!!! Thanks for sharing! Happy Valentine’s Day and see you Tuesday.

    Fish? well, make one out of whatever and stick it on a short piece of clear fishing line and poke it into the pond etc. then pour your water. Bingo the fishing line just might disappear, I don't know, just another bob's hair brain idea. Little details like that is what makes the difference in a truly great model and a common place one. Also most folks will not see it, but wonder why the scene looks extra cool. That is the ultimate goal, it looks so real the eye doesn't catch it. Kind of like the old TV ad; "is it real, or is it Memorex". Great video, as always. ;-)

    Couple of ideas. Have a few strategic pouring spots where you have removed the rock. Pour in those spots then replace the rock before the resin hardens. AND/OR Pour onto rocks you know will be submerged so it won’t matter if they get “wet”.

    Nice job on the creek. The one thing about that deep pore by Woodland scenics is you do tend to get a few bubbles in there and I haven’t been able to figure out how exactly to get those out unless you sit there and watch thing thing dry which who has time for that. You’ll have fun with the static grass, I tried it out for the first time this last year and I absolutely love how it works.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the key is to stir it really slow. I have thought about vacuuming it as I actually have a vacuum pump for doing that. That pulls all the air out of anything that you put in there. But then you might get more in there is you pour it into the scenery in fact you will. I have seen a technique that we tried of coming back with a torch and heat in the surface and that will break whatever bubbles sit there but it won’t stop some from rising up.

      Yeah when I run out of this stuff I’m going to switch to that. They’re both a lacquer based paint and I swear they’re really the same thing. For some reason all of the testers paints have been off the market. Well we kind of know why testers went broke and was taken over by rust oleum. They’re the ones who made the paint all along in the first place so they’re just re-branding it under the testers name and putting it right back on the market.

    Those measuring glasses with the scale stickers on the side would be pretty easy to calibrate with a kitchen scale set to measure in grams. Put the cup on the scale and zero it out, then add 100 grams of water to the cup. 100 grams is the same as 100 ml, so just align the 100ml mark on the sticker to the top of the water line.

So I used Magic Water and I liked it so much I won't ever use anything else. You could have poured it from the top end of the stream and it would have flowed like real water to the lower end without having to pour in several spots, thus avoiding the spills. Also, I'm sure you've heard of Luke Towan from Australia. He does a fantastic job with fish underwater in a diorama. ...Claude

    A piece of aquarium air tubing fits on the end of a syringe real good. If you're using a larger syringe in the tube on syringe 💉 is bigger than the airline tube all you have to do is take a blow dryer and warm the end of the airline tube and then slide it over the end of your syringe 💉

      Hi Bobby. I found mixing cups and syringes for doing epoxy on Amazon. Came today! Huge syringes! Big nozzle. .90 each. Use once and toss. Mixing ups just like the ones that came with the kit but lettered. No stupid decal. So accurate!!

    Use tweezers to put the rocks in after the water material is down to prevent the tops of th e rocks from looking wet.

      I like the rocks into the mud. The flat clear works great 👍

    Nice. I never tried such resin "water", as I prefer faking with paint and gloss coat. But these bottles look strange for Woodland Scenics. No branding on them, and a lot of languages! German shouldn't be on it, as it is sold as Noch. Not sure Kato re -brands everything for Japanese market, but I also never seen Japanese on the WS products I have.
    The Static King is great, at least compared to the cheap tool I had before. But you need to connect some external power to have it at its full potential (I had some old Braun shavers' power plug with just the good voltage, I just needed to fit the connector).
    I applied some static grass just this morning, and the WS static grass glue is a lot easier to use than normal white glue. Don't forget to use several length of static grass to get a good coverage, I go from big to small (but some people do it in the other order), 12mm, 6mm, 4mm and 2mm.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I’m sure that both of this water product and the static king static grass tool are European made and probably sold in Europe under nock

    • @pbyfr
      @pbyfr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToyManTelevision I think that Noch is just rebranding most of the WS product, at list for grass and turf, and the static king is a WS orignal, Noch is still selling the flashlight like model (which WS used to rebrand).
      Anyway, it is a bit of a pain, as it is hard to find the corresponding reference, WS being not easily available in France. I bought a lot from UK, but I'm not sure how it will go in the future.

    • @ToyManTelevision

      I really like the look of them stuck down in the mud and that works great. The key is to come back and cover up the shiny spots with a flat clear and they look great

    Amazon has a pack of 60ml syringes with longer snouts with a wider opening that would possibly work great for a little more pinpoint placement of your fake water. Could be worth trying?!?!

  • @simonalexandercritchley439
    @simonalexandercritchley439 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why didn't you start at the top of the stream? Go with the flow,man .I see the reply about the syringe,this would direct the "water" better.Still looks a bit tricky. I have yet to do any water effects,so will follow with interest. You could also try a straw( make a funnel for the top with alu foil) .

    Hi Toy Man TV. The test is looking fine. I'd say try something like these to place the "water" -
    (google "disposable craft glue bottle aplicator")
    Also, I've seen some cast-in fish made by modelling the fish from a piece of shaped styrene, paint the fish, then stick a small diameter pin through some Styrofoam strips and into the top to suspend the fish from above a few mm above a piece of wax paper. Then dribling on some thick "water" resin and letting it drip over the fish and run down to the paper, forming a clear "stand /base". Once it dries, glue them to the river bed and pour the rest of the "water" around them. Viola - fish suspended in the "water"....

      Karen is one step ahead of you! She just made us an entire school of fish but out of sculpy clay. She use the metallic silver kind and then overloaded that with the transparent kind that has a tan tint to it. Turned out absolutely perfect! We have been trying to figure out how to mount them to the bottom of the river but something like what you’ve described

    I have a question for you guys and anybody that reads this. I recently got into modle building and I am having trouble cleening my brushes. I wash them in hot water after painting, i use modle paint, and the brush still has paint. I tryed brush cleener but it ate the brushes. I am now using paint thiner and it somewat works. I also haveing the issue of the brushes coming apart after going through the cleener. My art teacher thinks that is because the brushes are old, there from my fathers modle building tools from the 60's, so i am concerned about running out of brushes. Can you give me any advice or tips please?
