  • Today I'm giving furniture painting tips for updating old furniture. If you want to paint it white or a light color, watch this video before you start! Here's an explanation of paint prep, primers and paint "bleed through". I'll explain what causes ugly dark spots from tannins, sap, and other staining problems. Learn how to prevent ugly tannin bleed-through stains, and how to fix them if they have already occurred. Even if you are using chalk paint you sometimes need to do surface prep work so you can flip furniture for maximum profit (or keep it for yourself!)

I add 65 drops of black to a gallon of BIN Primer when I purchase it. BIN has a yellowish background and when using pure white is hard to cover, but the light grey is easier to cover.

Very informative. Love listening to these educational videos of dos and don’ts and how to fix it. The best explanation of bleed through in general to help us understand this issue. Thanks Amy.

Great step by step instruction in your video - thanks Amy! I hadn't thought about trying to salvage the factory finish when sanding, but it makes sense. Do you have a brand of primer that you stick with, or are they all kind of the same?

Zinzzer is the only brand I know that does the shellac-based but there are probably others out there. Thanks!

So interesting to learn about this! I've had this happen and wondered if I had just not used enough paint. Love your videos!

This is the most extensive explanation on 'bleed through", and how to prevent it, that I have seen. It's pretty important because it's terrible to have to redo a project when you thought you were finished with it. It was helpful to see examples of it. You showed Shellack in a spray paint format, is that less effective than painting it on?

The spray works well if you just need it in a few places. I probably wouldn't try to spray a whole piece of furniture, but I guess you could. Thanks for watching!

Oh good for you for reading the instructions LOL! Thanks for that tip- I don't usually use TSP so that's good to know!!

This does not apply to exterior applications.

What If you have used 4 coats shellac and still getting bleed thru?

    • @amydillardGypsySoul

Oh Wow! That is a tough one! Sometimes the BIN shellac based primer seems tougher than shellac only, because it has the white paint primer in there too. But it seems like 4 coats should do the trick. I guess whatever is bleeding through is very strong- like ink or an old fashioned stain? Sanding it back down, cleaning with TSP, and re-coating with shellac would be a last resort, I guess, depending on your level of commitment. Good luck!!

I'd love to hear you share your experience with wood furniture in the comments! Forgot to mention my house looks like it's under construction because like so many folks in Texas, we had frozen pipes and flood damage from the deep freeze and power failures in February!
