All it takes is one holiday to see that our driving standards are some of the best. Almost everywhere I've been is pretty shocking, although maybe that has something to do with the fact I get in alot more taxis on holiday...
@@arya6085 I've been around the world and I have to say the UK isn't that bad. Although we seem to be getting worse. Germany for me is still one of the best countries to drive in. USA is awful. Italy is ok if you drive like them. Australia reminds me of the USA. Eastern Europe is a mixed bag.
@@arya6085 they have good discipline. But they're very rules focused people. The UK per capita is actually fairly high on the list (I think it's in the top 10) on driving competence and least number of road deaths. My experience of living in the Asia for a bit and the middle East does make the UK seem perfect. there are a lot of shocking drivers out there. Some places the test also feels almost irrelevant!

Genuinely helpful video, as a regular driver you can see what helps and what doesn't. Would have liked to see something like this when learning to drive, hearing sirens as an inexperienced driver in heavy traffic I would always hope they weren't behind me

For a few months during the aftermath of the 2008/09 recession when I was made redundant, I trade plated up and down the country. One of the most memorable cars I had the pleasure of collecting and taking to auction was a decommissioned Mondeo estate rapid response vehicle. It still had the livery on the vehicle but with no lights and siren of course. Watching that sped up footage of the cars moving from lane 2 to lane 1 reminded me of the day I drove that car, and boy could it shift!
4:28 - also shows your decisiveness and confidence in your vehicle's ability, which is a big part of effective response driving that only experience teaches. Goes to show that top speed is not everything with response vehicles, rather their responsiveness for dynamic decisions is just as important. Thanks for your videos!
This blue right thing you guys got really fascinated me, not even sure if we have it down here in Australia. I think it might be because of width of the road but it seems less easy for civilian vehicles to pull to the side and stop to EMS pass compared to North America.
I’m quite proud of how the British drivers react to the blues and twos, the Americans literally get off the road (though much more space to do that) but, we seem to have a connection with emergency vehicles and we want to help as much as we can…sadly you get one or two that are blind to what is going on around them but, on the whole we try our best…
I disagree when it comes to slow moving on motorways - why it isn't mandatory to move away from the central white line to create a emergency corridor I do not know! It would literally save peoples lives! The amount of times you see an emergency vehicle struggling to get through yet watch videos on European countries and they fly through no worries! I'd love to see more videos on windy B roads/country lanes from this channel

I lived all my life in Hitchin (since 2017 it's Norfolk) but it's very weird seeing you drive through there & surrounding areas. All the best to you though, love your videos and hope you don't come across anything majorly serious although I'd like to think you'd handle it appropriately and well
04:00 - I'd say the traffic coming onto the roundabout has a clearer view of you that the last roundabout anyway - so from the video I'd say lane 1 is safer than cutting in front of the car already in lane 3.
Hi Chris, I really enjoy your videos and use them to review some of my own driving decisions when faced with emergency service vehicles. I like more recently that you point out good examples of good driver action with the green tick and tell us why their actions are good. Would it be possible to also point out some of the bad driver actions as well please, as learning what not to do is just as good, if not better a learning opportunity. Or perhaps point/link to a video that does show what drivers should and shouldn't do. Thank you.
Chris, may be a stupid question. But are you limited on how much you can exceed the speed limit, or can you achieve similar speeds as a traffic officer if needed and traffic permitting?
I'm sure Chris has said before his trust is speed limit +20mph, it varies from trust to trust. Some are +50%, I believe also can go over that but has to be 'safe' and would have to explain reasons behind it if anything happened.
@Harry Old at 7:04 all 3 of those vehicles should be in lane 1! As for your "copy what police do" that actually made me laugh out loud. Police lane hog all the time, they speed when not on call, they don't indicate and I even had one cut me up on a roundabout a few weeks ago.

@@chrisgale5634 it’s about maintaining good practice, you might not have issues but many people get bad driving habits when they don’t indicate here and there and don’t maintain lane discipline. Lots of people already stay in the middle lane while barely gaining on distant traffic they claim to want to overtake so I would still get in the first lane personally as I don’t see much point in being in the middle lane unless I’m overtaking there and then
Many drivers only use their mirrors once in a blue moon... Combine that with poor hearing and/or loud radios and it's easy to see how blue lights and sirens go unnoticed
Interesting to note that if most of the drivers who were in lane two had moved back into lane 1 as they were not overtaking anyone then your progress would have been smoother. More of these videos should be used as part of better driver training as the driving test is just that . A test for competency on the day.
At the high speed the cam car is going it might appear they are not overtaking. Bit they might of just pulled out at 70mph to over a 65mph car when the cam car comes up from behind at 95mph. Nothing worse then cars that only change lane to overtake when they are only 1 or 2 meter off rear bumper, very dangerous.
They were likely overtaking and then slowed and moved back over. Plenty of times I've stayed in the right, even though I'm not overtaking at that instant, but I'm about to overtake multiple cars. If someone is behind me and it's safe to do so, I will move back over, but swapping between lanes for every car is at least in my opinion less safe then staying right and overtaking one after the other, before moving left when the cars ahead are either faster or there is not car ahead.

Why lane 2 at 6:58? Lane 3 has best visibility for that corner surely? There's probably a really good reason you moved over that I haven't thought about though.
A question about the change of the sound from the siren. It clearly has two different modes - I cannot describe them accurately but one seems to be far more urgent than the other - does the mode change automatically say when being slowed by traffic, road conditions, etc., or is it something that the driver has to initiate?
Three siren tones: first is the wail, a long, slow tone for distance. Second is called yelp, used for approaching junctions and where there is more traffic. Third is phaser - often only used when in convoy with another emergency vehicle to allow other road users to hear there are two different vehicles. The driver activates, changes tone and switches off at their command via the vehicle horn.
Can anyone here explain to me why to horn honks when he changes the siren? I'm a US viewer and I know for a fact that the majority of our EMS vehicles don't do that.
Listen to your instructors, read up on your highway code and your exemptions. Try to get to know your vehicle and how it handles. Take everything as it comes, don't try to predict what people do as you will end up making actions on assumptions which can end badly.
Was wondering a similar question. Having grown up in Hertfordshire I am familiar with the majority of these roads and a journey from Hitchin to Hatfield (where this upload starts and ends) does seem along way. I did wonder whether there is a shortage of paramedics (or these specialists) so they are required to cover a greater area.
"Long" is really dynamic based on the type of vehicle and most importantly the clinical skill level of those on board said vehicle. For a normal ambulance, this might be quite a way but for a specialist like Chris this probably isn't too far. I don't know how many of these specialist paramedics they have but I imagine there's not a lot of them. In terms of journey length it's really dependent on what calls are happening where and when. A normal ambulance might be tasked to go from Manchester to Liverpool if there was no jobs in Manchester for them to attend and there was something happening in Liverpool (eg; Cardiac Arrest) where they were needed. Obviously common sense applies that they're not going to be sent up to Scotland or somewhere silly but it frequently happens that borders are crossed to render aid.

He is an officer, usually responding to serious incidents or jobs where his specialism with more advanced paramedic training will assist in the treatment of a casulty(s). Consider that although he has merit as a rapid response car he may not have the same amount of equipment as a DCA (Double Crewed Ambulance) or support as he is on his own, this would not neccesarily stop him being deployed to an incident as a the first unit however it means its unlikely.
I would love to see 999 on-board footage used to prosecute members of the public for driving without due care and attention. Even though the vast majority of motorists on this clip acted admirably when confronted with this emergency vehicle, there were a few who could have done better. And each was a result of them not using rear facing mirrors. When they're positioned correctly, you see the blues in your peripheral vision. There's no excuse.
Yeah in the U.K. we’re literally taught from a very young age that if you see blue lights whilst driving you move the fuck out of the way so by the time we get to the age to drive it’s already naturally installed in our instinct
It's his personal and work vehicle, As he is an officer he is not permanently going from job to job, he will be on call to be dispatched to the jobs that he is required at. As such with his personal vehicle there is no need for it to be branded as an ambulance especially as an unmarked car is plenty visible enough when he is conducting blue light runs. When he is not at work he will be using the vehicle for his own day to day journeys.
@@User66ish never mind that a plain, dark coloured vehicle is much less visible and people are less likely to get out of the way. As long as it looks nice when he's going to the supermarket, that's the main thing.
@@MyMednas you can’t expect the guy to be driving around in a bright ambulance his entire time, he is entitled to time off and as such does not need a marked car and has a right to have some privacy about his car. The fact that the car is unmarked makes a very minimal difference to it’s visibility when on a blue light run, the battenberging on the side of a car is reflective, useful when the car is being used in dark conditions as a safety car on roads or needs to be seen when the lights aren’t illuminated which is not the case.
This isn't just made for TH-cam. This is a real life call he's going to 🙄🤦🏻♂️ "sorry I'm late, I had to just use one set of two tones for the entire journey and I was massively delayed because Martin told me to do so" 🤦🏻♂️🙄

@@MyMednas if you watch his videos, you'll often see that his lights are so bright, they reflect on the road signs. Plus, when you look in your mirror and see flashing lights, it doesn't matter if its a white car or black car.

If I had to guess its one of these two 1)The ambulance service is so strained at the moment that he might of Been the nearest unit that wasn't already allocated to a call 2) it was a major call that needed lots of specialist units so they were called In from further away
Would you consider doing a voice-over at the editing stage, rather than using captions? I find the captions breaks the flow of your driving. It took me a long time to feel at ease with my voice on my own channel but I do think it connects with your viewers better. I'm using some of your videos in lessons as it's more real than Blue Light Aware.

Good video overall. The 5x was ok for a short while but I lost concentration and started thinking about the disco as it became TMI and I got flooded.

He will have to cover a wider area as the more senior your role is, less incidents will require you to attend
Not unheard of for County Ambulance Services to travel 45+ minutes on blues.

A question about the change of the sound from the siren. It clearly has two different modes - I cannot describe them accurately but one seems to be far more urgent than the other - does the mode change automatically say when being slowed by traffic, road conditions, etc., or is it something that the driver has to initiate?
The horn changes the horn its when approaching traffic and junctions/red lights

Three siren tones: first is the wail, a long, slow tone for distance. Second is called yelp, used for approaching junctions and where there is more traffic. Third is phaser - often only used when in convoy with another emergency vehicle to allow other road users to hear there are two different vehicles. The driver activates, changes tone and switches off at their command via the vehicle horn.

Can anyone here explain to me why to horn honks when he changes the siren? I'm a US viewer and I know for a fact that the majority of our EMS vehicles don't do that.
More noise is better i guess
They use the horn to change the siren, easier and less distracting than pressing a button pack on the dash

Listen to your instructors, read up on your highway code and your exemptions. Try to get to know your vehicle and how it handles. Take everything as it comes, don't try to predict what people do as you will end up making actions on assumptions which can end badly.

That seems a long way for a blue light run. What is the longest journey in miles that you might have to do?
Was wondering a similar question. Having grown up in Hertfordshire I am familiar with the majority of these roads and a journey from Hitchin to Hatfield (where this upload starts and ends) does seem along way. I did wonder whether there is a shortage of paramedics (or these specialists) so they are required to cover a greater area.
"Long" is really dynamic based on the type of vehicle and most importantly the clinical skill level of those on board said vehicle. For a normal ambulance, this might be quite a way but for a specialist like Chris this probably isn't too far. I don't know how many of these specialist paramedics they have but I imagine there's not a lot of them. In terms of journey length it's really dependent on what calls are happening where and when. A normal ambulance might be tasked to go from Manchester to Liverpool if there was no jobs in Manchester for them to attend and there was something happening in Liverpool (eg; Cardiac Arrest) where they were needed. Obviously common sense applies that they're not going to be sent up to Scotland or somewhere silly but it frequently happens that borders are crossed to render aid.

He is an officer, usually responding to serious incidents or jobs where his specialism with more advanced paramedic training will assist in the treatment of a casulty(s). Consider that although he has merit as a rapid response car he may not have the same amount of equipment as a DCA (Double Crewed Ambulance) or support as he is on his own, this would not neccesarily stop him being deployed to an incident as a the first unit however it means its unlikely.
I was just watching this through the video preview and the whole time I thought he was speed-running to get pulled over by the police 😅🤣

I would love to see 999 on-board footage used to prosecute members of the public for driving without due care and attention. Even though the vast majority of motorists on this clip acted admirably when confronted with this emergency vehicle, there were a few who could have done better. And each was a result of them not using rear facing mirrors. When they're positioned correctly, you see the blues in your peripheral vision. There's no excuse.
You'd have a hard time proving it to be DWDC because you must remember that no member of the public is legally required to move out of the way!

Yeah in the U.K. we’re literally taught from a very young age that if you see blue lights whilst driving you move the fuck out of the way so by the time we get to the age to drive it’s already naturally installed in our instinct

It's his personal and work vehicle, As he is an officer he is not permanently going from job to job, he will be on call to be dispatched to the jobs that he is required at. As such with his personal vehicle there is no need for it to be branded as an ambulance especially as an unmarked car is plenty visible enough when he is conducting blue light runs. When he is not at work he will be using the vehicle for his own day to day journeys.

@@User66ish never mind that a plain, dark coloured vehicle is much less visible and people are less likely to get out of the way. As long as it looks nice when he's going to the supermarket, that's the main thing.
@@MyMednas you can’t expect the guy to be driving around in a bright ambulance his entire time, he is entitled to time off and as such does not need a marked car and has a right to have some privacy about his car.
The fact that the car is unmarked makes a very minimal difference to it’s visibility when on a blue light run, the battenberging on the side of a car is reflective, useful when the car is being used in dark conditions as a safety car on roads or needs to be seen when the lights aren’t illuminated which is not the case.

@@MyMednas if you watch his videos, you'll often see that his lights are so bright, they reflect on the road signs. Plus, when you look in your mirror and see flashing lights, it doesn't matter if its a white car or black car.
Only thing to make it better would the current speed...in mph!

Looks like you covered a lot distance why wouldn't they just get someone who probably is closer to the patient?
If I had to guess its one of these two
1)The ambulance service is so strained at the moment that he might of Been the nearest unit that wasn't already allocated to a call
2) it was a major call that needed lots of specialist units so they were called In from further away
He is likely a specialist paramedic, they drive their own non-ambulance vehicle and are dispatched to priority cases.

I find the captions breaks the flow of your driving. It took me a long time to feel at ease with my voice on my own channel but I do think it connects with your viewers better.
I'm using some of your videos in lessons as it's more real than Blue Light Aware.
