Technology always wins in the end, but I'm still stuck in the 60's and 70's when it comes to cars.

Except the wiring issues that start after a few years. Plastic interiors with imitation leather.Low reliability. I can drive my 88 model across the continent and carry in a plastic shopping bag all replacement parts that would stop my car from running, be able to diagnose and fix on the side of the road. No scanner needed, No special tools. Just repair it and go. The longest repair would take an hour and a half or so only because you must drop the fuel tank to replace fuel pump. Go a few years older and the pump is just two bolts on the side of the engine. So yeah someone who has never had the pleasure of being a mechanic through the 70's 80's era would think that. 90 percent of older car repair was Alt. water pump, a/c compressor, ign. module or points, valve cover gasket leak, and a carb. rebuild now and then. There were no instrument cluster ecm, engine ecm, trans. ecm, body ecm, antilock brake ecm, climate control ecm. All of which i have had to replace at one time or another on cars less than 10 years old. So maybe not in every way.

fast nasty, that reminds me of a couple weeks back. i stop in my local convenience store and pull up beside this new camaro with the hood open and some young guy looking perplexed. he tells me he has to wait there an hour and a half for a tow as his oil pressure has bottomed out. he called the dealer and they sending out a tow which he has to wait over an hour for even though the car dealer is about 30 minutes away.
car looked nice but too bulky imo to compare the the 60's era camaros. also those small blocks and big blocks were pretty bullet proof and did not need a computer to tell you what was wrong with them. so easy to work on that old iron and when you roll into a gas station in one today you will have a crowd gather around to have a closer look but not with these modern versions.
i always said if i ever won the powerball i would not buy a new car but would have a stable of old rides.

An interesting lesson: carbueration vs fuel injection, torque vs horsepower, and gearing differences. In most of the matches, the old timers get the jump off the line (torque, low gearing, high fuel portage), but the youngsters make up and take it in the top end (horsepower, injection). Also, the old timers are typically heavier bodies, with the young bucks not only lighter, but better suspension and traction device systems. Good post. I do agree with an earlier post: a lot of oldies out there running in the 9's that we didn't see here.

Interesting to see a 50 year age difference between the new and old muscle. It's pretty amazing that half century-old machines are able to run with the brand new stuff. There really isn't that much of a difference for being 50 years apart. Imagine a 1970 model car racing something from 1920, or fifty years from now an old 2019 car racing a 2069 model, assuming such a thing will even exist a half-century from now. I was a kid 50 years ago and we would have been very disappointed how little cars in 2019 have changed compared to 1969 models. Not only do they not fly, in the case of the Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro they even still have the same names and resemble their 50 year old ancestors.

I think some of the new cars could still beat the old iron with the A/C blowing cold, if it weren't for leaving water on the track. Then the best part is when you’re done which is really never, but close. You take it out and smoke the majority of the factory cars on the street, and you built it on your own, best satisfaction ever. Although I prefer the look and feel of the older cars, I have been saying this for years.
Those old muscle cars are no where near as fast as even a modern sport coupe, let alone modern muscle car. My 2004 350Z could trounce most vintage muscle cars. Heck, a
V6 powered Accord coupe is as fast as most of the 60's muscle cars in original
stock form. Engine power relative to cubic inch has been increased dramatically
in the past 4 - 5 decades. Now, I am talking stock vehicles not modified ones
like most were in this video. A LS7 454 I had dynoed at around 500 hp
but it would not idle smoothly under 1350 rpm. Not a problem since it
was in a boat. Today, they can get that kind of power out of a
300 cid engine and it will run smooth at 700 rpm. Like I said, a lot of
improvements have been made in the last 5 decades with respect to engine
    efficiency and power.

I love old American cars. I have an C4 Vette and a '70 Challenger, and they are fun as hell to drive. On the track though, the only thing that matters is who gets over the finish line first.
Dont get me wrong, old cars have swag and style, and I'd own one of every model if I could, but there's no denying modern muscle with modern handling, braking and drivability.

There were no 9, 10, 11 or 12 second "old muscle cars" back in the day. indeed, the very fastest production examples were stuck in the mid to upper 13s, despite being lightly modified per the governing rule book:
      www.chevelle454ls6.com/1970_chevelle_454_ls6.htm
Some of the drag racing oriented magazines occasionally achieved better results, nearly always through the use of specially prepared factory "ringers" that were then further modified on site and occasionally fitted with 8" wide drag slicks.
I know what happened back then because I have hundreds of magazines from that era, had a dad who was active in the performance car culture during that era and have accessed the related NHRA's records ("Stock" and "Super Stock", both of which permitted a host of mods).

There was no 69 Charger in this vid, looks like the uploader can't tell the difference between a 68 Coronet and a 69 Charger LoL. And whoever set this compilation up just cherry picked a bunch of shots of new supercharged cars racing naturally aspirated classic cars, I've taken my 68 roadrunner to the strip enough times to tell you first hand that the older cars are generally faster. The new Chargers and Challengers weigh literally 900 pounds more than their vintage counterparts and the only ones that can compete with the classics are supercharged.

@Brian Smith Actually you should look at some numbers, both the 1970 Chevy LS6 454 and the 66-71 Chrysler 426 Hemi were substantially under rated on paper. Despite their rather mundane factory ratings both engines produced over 500 horsepower straight off the showroom floor and both were capable of low 12's in the quarter on cheap little "pizza cutter" bias-ply tires. Here are some links to some Pure Stock Drag vids in case you don't believe me. You'll never see a heavy ass modern car competing there because they simply don't cut the mustard.

All muscle-era engines were under rated for insurance purposes, auto insurance companies at the time were charging more and more money as the cars got faster which was making it difficult to sell cars to anyone that wasn't filthy rich.
Also, all those old road tests claiming these cars only ran 13/14 seconds weren't done with quality tires or a properly prepped track. Keep em running like new and give them some proper grip and you can see how they actually run.

      @ajhayden3307 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Impactjunky to add on to that, if you take a 70's true muscle car and put the money in it then you would be beating all these new cars left and right, like slicks and different exhaust and a hood scoop and so on. The price you'd pay for a new camaro would be more than taking a dodge dart and upgrading a already fast lite car and making it faster than the camaro.

I owned a stock 69 charger RT/SE with 4 speed and 440 w/ 3.54 gears. They were great for their day and an improvement over say, 1964 cars, however when left stock, they did not handle, stop or accelerate very well. By today's standards they were just loud and slow. My new Ford Escape SUV with 2.0 eco-boost is within tenths of a second as fast in 0-60 and 1/4 mile and stops and handles much better than the 69 RT. Having owned both, old and new when new, I can tell you that the old cars looked better because they did not have to meet safety regs. but performed much worse than modern cars and even modern SUVs.
