Thanks - there’s a speed adjuster on the youtuber player, you can change the speed to whatever speed you want. Unfortunately, if I make the video slower, people will complain about that too; can’t please everyone haha
Thank you for explaining so much is such a short amount of time. Keep these videos coming. I am transitioning from Adobe Rush to DaVinci and I already love DaVinci.
Very helpful and useful tutorial. 🙌❤ I'm new to DaVinci Resolve and to your channel. You've covered all the essentials thoroughly in record time. Will revisit soon. Thank you, Alli.
Thank you for making this DaVinci Resolve tutorial. I watched a couple of videos on this topic, but this video had great information on exactly how to use the video editing features of the product. Great job!!
i've just switched from Premier to Resolve, I would like to thank you for making this video, with some of the most basic features being at the core of my videos, it was a great help ! to get me started. i can already see editing is going to be quicker !
Thanks Alli. I would like to see an audio tutorial for Davinci Resolve. I like your tutorials as you explain how to use Davinci Resolve, and Premiere Pro in workflows that are helpful to me.
I'm going from iMovie to Resolve, and this video was so helpful. I'm still a noobie at video editing. You went kind of fast through everything, but that's ok because I'll probably watch it multiple times. Thanks so much! Looking forward to more of your videos.
Thanks a lot for your tutorial! I am particular glad that you also did spend a little time about creating the database, which helped me to an easy start.
Alli, I've seen many, many DR16 videos and this has to be the best one in terms of a quick overview. Excellent work. You have a very pleasant communication style. Subscribed.
Where have we been? Didn't know about this. It looks very complete and easy to use. Really like that dynamic zoom feature. Excellent tutorial and tips.
As of December 2022, they are at version 18.1.1 (?) and you can still get the free version. If you get DaVinci Resolve, be prepared for a long learning process. It IS very powerful, with many many features - but there are many many buttons that you need to know about.
I just want to say thank you for making this video I'm a hip-hop artist working on a project right now and this just saves me a lot of time and money I just hope this program doesn't leave a watermark I'm literally working on my video right now I love what you do and appreciate you if you ever need any music feel free to hit me up
When I watched the video first time through a day or so ago, I did not realize just how powerful it is. In this short amount of time you have covered so much material and it gives me everything I need to get started. I have already started work on some videos. Thanks again for a great job. I do have a couple of questions: Can you describe exactly what "Bins" are and what they do. I saw what you were doing in the video but I don't get what they are doing. When you are ready to deliver there looks to be different files that are created. It looks like when you choose TH-cam the format is .mp4, correct? What are the other formats available? Thanks for such a great job here. Greg...
Thanks Greg!! Bins are just another name for folders. It’s how you can organize content. Smart bins can even auto sort content based on the meta data your footage has! Yep, we use h.264 for youtube. That’s honesty the only codec you’d use. Only when you’re working professionally would you use some of the others, but then they will make huge file sizes!
Thank you! This is so helpful. I'm just learning video editing and had been using a simpler program with less options (also quite glitchy). But I felt it was time to move up in the world! This video is amazing. I will likely play it multiple times when I work on my next video to really get a proper grasp on this program. Looking forward to watching the more advanced tutorials once I get the basics down!! Thanks for doing this :)
The best explanation I've seen so far. Thank you very much for sharing this video. Like it for sure. If your channel was only for Davinci Resolve I could subscribe as well.
Glad you learned from this, but you won’t click a subscribe button and support a channel that provided you a ton of value in a tutorial that you received completely for free? It took like 20 hours to make this tutorial.....
YAY! DaVinci Resolve tutorial for beginners! This is what we need, will do full watch soon :D We've been wanting to learn about this free software more especially because it's free and heard great things about it being the best tool for colour grading in video. Thanks so much for sharing this Alli, great job 👍 Question for you, are you guys still using Premiere Pro as your main editing software right now or switching to DaVinci Resolve?
Thanks! Glad you like the video! We are still using Premiere for all of our videos, but as more and more people discover DaVinci Resolve, we’ll keep putting out content for it. Eventually we may switch, as their updates have been frequent and they seem to really care about their users. Adobe doesn’t seem to listen to user feedback, or at least it takes them 2 years to introduce something that people requested, unfortunately.
I've only ever used (or, struggled with) GoPro Studio, and have been looking for a free video editing alternative that hopefully works better. I'll give this a try. Thanks!
To Alli, please consider doing more tutorial on how to use Davinci Resolve. Because it is a FREE editing software, I think more people would try using it. Currently I'm at a stage where I'm ready to take my video editing to the next level. I'm currently using Filmora 9 but, I think I'm ready to see more professionalism in my videos. I tried Adobe Premiere but it was just too much, however Davinci Resolve will give me the same look and it is more user friendly. I would like to see how to do cool transitions, voice-overs, and how to add funny video clips in my videos. Thank you so much for the current tutorials that you have already uploaded. I appreciate a lot!! Plus, you do an awesome job explaining.
This video is a god send :) Thanks for sharing. Quick question: I always seem to lose a few frames when I use davinci resolve. A few seconds of footage just disappears. I cannot put my finger on it. Any ideas?
WoW! Awesome video!!! I just downloaded this program and needed to learn it quickly. I usually use Movie Edit Pro but its very slow and stutters at times even with a dedicated video card 16g of ram and a I7 processor. Thanks for the tips!
I found that da vinci is really hard to process on older computers Adobe premier runs a lot faster. Might needa try the pro version cause paying 400 a year for premier pro is expensive too...
I've heard that too about it running slow, but not on the latest version. Which version of Resolve were you running? Have you tried Resolve 16 that was recently released and taken out of beta? Ya, the Studio version of Resolve costs less than 1 year for the Adobe subscription haha
Hey Nick and Helmi! From your Project Manager screen, right click on an empty space, click on Dynamic Project Switching. Next, open the project you want to work in. When your project loads, go up to File, click on it, select Project Manager, and double click on the next project you want to import. When that opens you can go up to the top of your Program Monitor screen which will show your projects name, and click on the drop down menu to find your second project. This will make it easy to copy a clip off of one timeline and paste it into another. Hope that helps:)
Curious to know what file system format you have your external drive formatted in. I formatted my to exFat for compatibility with both my Windows desktop and Mac laptop - however, Davinci flags a warning when saving the database to it because of the exFar format.
I would HIGHLY suggest not using exfat. It is extremely slow for reading and write speeds. Exfat is only good for USB drives for example where you need to copy some small files between Mac and pc. We used to edit on Macs and would format to Mac Journaled. And then when we switched to PC, all of our new drives are formatted to NTSC for PC. The trick though to use any Mac formatted hard drive on Windows is to use the software Mac Drive. Install it on your PC and you can simply connect any Mac formatted drive to your PC and read and write to it. It makes life super easy for us since we’re constantly grabbing footage from old Mac drives. Hope that helps!
@@AlliandWill okay, awesome!! I ended up reformatting the external and got my database setup. I'll shop around tomorrow for Mac drive. Thanks so much! =)
Do you have a video on how to make my MacBook Pro external ssd drive the default for editing videos with da Vinci resolve? I would love to keep my internal drive strictly for software!
We do not have a video on that right now, but I believe when you're setting up your DaVinci projects, simply choose and select your external drive and make sure all footage/project assets are saved there.
Thank you! It’s tough to please everybody; we’ve had people tell us we should speed up parts and also, others who said we should add more detail. That being said, you can change the playback speed of the video in the TH-cam player settings and you can also replay parts or the entire video as many times as you’d like!
We’ll add it to our notes for a future video! I can tell you though that DaVinci has been the industry standard for color correction and grading for many years! It’s really great, but in recent years Premiere Pro has also made some great improvements. Thanks!
Hi Allie,, as for a very beginner,, its quite complicate and too much datas to follow this tutorial, maybe when I get a little better and understand a little more, I will be able to learn.. any easier tutos ?
We don’t have any easier tutorials on DaVinci, but you can rewatch it multiple times and also change the playback speed on TH-cam to slower if it helps!
If I hear FREE!!! Count me in!!! Ahahah great tutorial btw! The editing software looks pretty straight forward!! Not bad!! Thanks for sharing I may need to download it one day soon!
DV16 suddenly quit and closed out entirely on me mid-edit. Later on in the same day I reopen it and finished editing my first real video, but rendering it went badly. Within an hour my laptop battery drained to 14% from 84% during the render and shortly after plugging in the charger...render job failed. It's a 22 minute long vid I'm hoping to upload to TH-cam on my HP....wonder if that same disaster would happen on any Mac
Hi, May I ask a question? 1. When it comes to selecting a folder and then a video to work on it. (In the beginning) 2. Some videos are not appearing and other videos are appearing. 3.Even if some of the videos have the same size or resolution. WHY I CAN'T JUST FIND SOME OF MY VIDEOS WHEN opening a folder...? Thanks!!
Hi, Alli. Question: I have loaded my clips, but I am seeing TWO timeline screens instead of just one. Also I cannot see the previews, only hearing audio from them. What gives?
Hey Richard, thanks for this question! Hm...sounds like you might have to adjust the panels you're seeing. Try going to the Workspace tab at the top of DaVinci and checking under: Show Page or Show Panel in Workspace to see which panels are check marked active. You can check mark different panels to make them visible. Hope that helps!
@@altarockerinamusicalmood3887 We run 3 businesses and manage over 200,000 students in our premium courses, so, unfortunately, we don't offer 1 on 1 support at this time, but I'd suggest going through a few other videos here on TH-cam, or just troubleshooting inside DaVinci, as there could be A LOT of reasons why you're experiencing issues.
Never used those before, but if you’re going for pro editing, I can guarantee its better because Davinci Resolve has been the Industry standard Hollywood Color Grading program for the last like 10 years, and in the last 3-4 years, they’ve started to build in the editing side to it. It’s VERY professional and has soooo many functions. A lot of the features work better than Premiere too, like their smooth cut vs Morph Cut in Premiere. They have the full version with everything for a one time single payment that’s cheaper than a single year subscription to Adobe, and the general version that’s fully packed is free, it’s pretty amazing!
@@AlliandWill I have to say it really is. It has solo much more in play than anything else I have used, let alone free apps too. Great program, with a fair learning curve though. I love it.
It's FAR more intuitive than non-node based editing, which is why node-based is the industry standard for VFX and color grading! It takes a little longer to wrap your head around it, but eventually it becomes faster and more flexible!
No idea why that would happen if you’re sure the path is correct! Offline media is when the path gets disconnected, like a hard drive is removed, or the drive path changes. I’d suggest restarting your computer, or reinstalling DaVinci. Or make sure you’re updated to the latest version
Alli, I have a 2013 macbook pro with 16gb of ram. When I open a file of 4 gb in size it takes a very long time to process the video through davinci. what can i do with the settings????
Unfortunately, not much! This is more of a hardware limitation issue than software optimization. 16GB ram is ok, but being from 2013, it’s probably the slower version of ram, and a 2013 CPU will be pretty slow too. (I also own a 2013 Macbook pro and while it works, it is slow too). A workaround is to create proxies, we don’t currently have a tutorial on that for DaVinci, but there’s lots of info with a Google search
@@AlliandWill Thanks so much. I'm a voice teacher, newly online because of the pandemic, and will need to produce recitals to post on youtube. This would include mixing duets, possibly aligning cutoffs without shifting the rest of the audio track, etc. Also, any suggestions on showing videos of two or more performers at once would be great!
Alli and Will-I downloaded the latest version of Davinci Resolve 16.2.4. However, viewer screens are not working. When I hit play nothing happens. The screens remain black. The video clips load onto the timeline ok but nothing appears in the preview screens. How do I get the viewer screens to work? Here is my setup that I'm using: Dell XPS 8930 Desktop Pc Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz 3.19GHz 32.0 GB RAM A 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor Windows 10 Pro
We aren’t affiliated with DaVinci Resolve at all, so I’m not sure what the problem is exactly and how to fix it, but you could try saving the project, then closing it, and then opening it again. I remember there being a glitch where clips weren’t viewable until the project was saved and the program was restarted. If that doesn’t work, try converting the clip to a different format
help please: I am trying to speed up all my short video clips at once so the entire video is a certain length but I just know how to do it one at a time then hope that speed makes the video 10 mins long. if it doesn't I have to readjust each clip (about 400 of them) again. :(
I’d suggest putting them all together in the timeline, then nesting all of the clips together (it makes them all as one), then you can simply speed up just the one new nest. Or you can export all the clips together as one long video, then reimport it and speed the new long video up.
Why does my Davinci Resolve look so much different then yours. I've just imported it on 09-24-20 I do not have the list of icons on the bottom (no where to be found) And the Media storage icon on the top is not there. In fact my top row looks nothing like yours. I just want to scream. I'm having such a hard time learning this.
Hey thanks for the question! Glad to help - On Mac, you press command + tab on your keyboard to switch between your programs and the desktop or “finder” area. On PC you press alt + tab on the keyboard I believe to do the same thing. Basically, I just switched to the desktop where the folders were on my computer using a keyboard shortcut. If you’d rather not use shortcuts, you can simply go to file - import, from within premiere pro, and import that way. All the best!
My suggestion is to reinstall the program. There is a software option when installing that you can make sure is checked, which may solve the problem for you. Black Magic also has hardware panels for editing, but you shouldn't require those to edit.

If I hear FREE!!! Count me in!!! Ahahah great tutorial btw! The editing software looks pretty straight forward!! Not bad!! Thanks for sharing I may need to download it one day soon!
Thank you! It's great!
This is great. Please do an audio editing tutorial. Thanks!
Thanks!!
Great video. Thank you. You got yourself a new Sub!!!
Glad you found the video helpful!!
Thanks!
You’re welcome!
Thank you so much

What computer you use @alliandwill for traveling?
A 2015 MacBook Pro only for copying off footage; we try not to edit while on the go :) but the newer Nvidia Studio laptops for creatives look nice!
I'd love to know how to move the media you edited on the Cut panel. Everyone goes directly to the Edit Panel, and maybe I should have done that.
I would say that’s your computer that’s causing the issues. Higher end Macs it probably wouldn’t happen or even higher end PCs.
it helps a lot
That’s awesome to hear!
Another question Alli: is there an "Undo" button ??
Yep! Ctrl + z or on Mac Command + z
@@AlliandWill Ah, Thanks...
You’re awesome 👏🇲🇽🇺🇸🇲🇽❤️
Thanks for the kind words!
Hi,
May I ask a question?
1. When it comes to selecting a folder and then a video to work on it. (In the beginning)
I’ll give it a shot to see if that works. Thanks!
Darn, that didn’t do it. Would you...be open to doing a Zoom session..to take a look at my interface?
@@altarockerinamusicalmood3887 We run 3 businesses and manage over 200,000 students in our premium courses, so, unfortunately, we don't offer 1 on 1 support at this time, but I'd suggest going through a few other videos here on TH-cam, or just troubleshooting inside DaVinci, as there could be A LOT of reasons why you're experiencing issues.
really cool
Thank you! Appreciate it :)
Haha but is it better than Shotcut? or hitfilm express?
I love it.
Agree with Henry!
I am so new to this. If I have iMovie do I need Di Vinci Resolve 16?
That's a question only you can answer. If you're happy with iMovie, you don't! If you feel limited, then upgrading will be worth it!
@@AlliandWill I downloaded the free version of DiVinci. But I don't know how to use either. Trying to learn how. Thanks for the advice.
This video is a great start 😃
I think that the node based system in davinci is very hard.
Others are simple and clear
It's FAR more intuitive than non-node based editing, which is why node-based is the industry standard for VFX and color grading! It takes a little longer to wrap your head around it, but eventually it becomes faster and more flexible!
@@AlliandWill I hate the fusion workspace
@@AlliandWill I am more used to Premiere's System
@@AlliandWill Is there any way to edit effects in the timeline itself like in Premiere
They are two different companies with different workflows, so I think you’ll have to learn it
Whenever i import a footage it shows "Media Offline" even if the path of the video is correct... Little help appreciated...How to resolve this?
@@AlliandWill Thank you and i will look for them today
👍👍
I would love to view an audio editing tutorial. I appreciate your focus on "beginner"!!!
Working on one at the moment!
We’ll keep that in mind! All the best!
Hello from reddit.! :-]
Welcome! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
Your great. I hope you will post more videos about resolve 16
Thanks for watching! I will definitely post more :)
Good Job, lady....
lol thanks, guy
How do I remove the gap left after deleting a section
Alli and Will-I downloaded the latest version of Davinci Resolve 16.2.4. However, viewer screens are not working. When I hit play nothing happens. The screens remain black. The video clips load onto the timeline ok but nothing appears in the preview screens. How do I get the viewer screens to work?
Here is my setup that I'm using:
Dell XPS 8930 Desktop Pc
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz 3.19GHz
32.0 GB RAM
A 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Windows 10 Pro
@@AlliandWill Thank you for getting back to me so fast! I am new to resolve but ill look up how to nest. Thank you again! You are the best!
My clips are jerking. They run for a second or two and stop for a second or two. What's up with that?
Most likely it is because your computer doesn't have a fast enough CPU, GPU, or the footage you're working with uses a tough codec to process.
what is the audio equioment
used in this video ?
Voice over was recorded with a Zoom H6 and a Sennheiser Mk66 shotgun mic
Why does my Davinci Resolve look so much different then yours. I've just imported it on 09-24-20 I do not have the list of icons on the bottom (no where to be found) And the Media storage icon on the top is not there. In fact my top row looks nothing like yours. I just want to scream. I'm having such a hard time learning this.
Is there a factory default settings option in the workspace layout that can change your settings back to default?
Where do you get music tracks from?
Link in description!
Thank u your the bestt
Thanks for watching!!
New subscriber nice video
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
Super noob here. When you were adding music, you just said tab over to my finder window. What exactly did you tab to? Where is the finder window?
Hey thanks for the question! Glad to help - On Mac, you press command + tab on your keyboard to switch between your programs and the desktop or “finder” area. On PC you press alt + tab on the keyboard I believe to do the same thing. Basically, I just switched to the desktop where the folders were on my computer using a keyboard shortcut. If you’d rather not use shortcuts, you can simply go to file - import, from within premiere pro, and import that way. All the best!
Alli and Will right on. TBH I’ve never heard it called a finder window so I assumed it was something in Divinci. Lol! Thanks for the help!!
lol you’re welcome!
I do not see the link to download Davinci Resolve?
You can get it by typing in DaVinci Resolve into google.com
What is the ram requirement
16
can you give me the link to it please?
To DaVinci? Just type it into Google 😂
Wonderful! Thank you. I have a lot to learn. Jerry Kyle
hello new friend, very good video, you are beautiful, be friend forever!!!
i don't have any transation same transation on you intro
When i drag the video clips its turning out to be not responding
What computer specs do you have?
Alli and Will I have a 4 GB ram ... i checked and it said dat min req is 8/16 smting ..ig dats the fault :/ .. im new to this thing
Ya, you’ll need a much faster system to edit without lag, unfortunately
Alli and Will i started shortcut ..it works well in my lap :)
tutorial about audio effect please
Will make a note for this!
It is saying that I need a panel
My suggestion is to reinstall the program. There is a software option when installing that you can make sure is checked, which may solve the problem for you. Black Magic also has hardware panels for editing, but you shouldn't require those to edit.
