For clarity - I used a lot of footage of Kashin Koji in this video. Otakemaru unfortunately doesn't show himself in human form during Nioh 2 - I felt that Kashin would serve the role in this instance for the sake of the illustrating the story I wanted to tell. I'm far from being a designer, so i'm using what I can to tell the story.
As far as I know Kashin and Otakemaru share the same entry in the bestiary so I always fought, they are one and the same or the Latter possessing the former at least

i was about to comment this. coz i was looking for kashin koji lore, to explain his motives behind nioh 2. i'm still confused if kashin koji was just possessed by otakemaru? you explained otakemaru's origin story, but not so much about his motives, and what's his connection with kashin koji?

There are alternate versions of the story, as folklore is like to do, where Suzuka is a rebellious bandit lord or even the daughter of king Enma, the god of the underworld. Rather than a benevolent goddess, Suzuka causes quite the ruckus in the province herself and is instead the one who makes it known that she seeks Otakemaru the demon god to serve her. She mistakes Taumuramaro for Otakemaru when he comes to quell her troublemaking because of his dignified stature and power befitting a demon god and loses their battle upon Taumuramaro startling her with the truth. Having been smitten by Taumuramaro's strength and virtue, Suzuka joins him on his quest to defeat the threats to the nation, namely Otakemaru now that she has forsaken the life of a bandit/corruption goddess. When Suzuka approaches Otakemaru's castle, he recognizes her as another famous "demon god" and laughs asking if she has reconsidered her demands that he serve her and wants to be his wife instead and cook for him. Suzuka accepts, but poisons Otakemaru's food or weakens him with underworld magics, allowing Taumuramaro to either disarm him of his holy swords or pierce his unbreakable hide in his weakened state, defeating him. Upon seeing that Suzuka whom he thought to be a kindred spirit has betrayed his trust, Otakemaru laments for the first and last time. Because of the twisting of folklore and history, it is thought that Otakemaru is a mythological version of the rebel king, Aterui of the Emishi, a historical foe of shogun Taumuramaro.
That's really interesting! Thank you for sending me that! I did find over versions of the folklore when I was doing my research, but felt that this was the most common one (that I found anyway)... Love your write up though. Thank you!

Onos Gaming yeah after posting I went and watched the Shuten Doji one, which was really informative too. The way you framed his life and posed the question at the end was really well done! There is a channel called Gaijin Goombah Media that has done some really cool yokai history videos as well. I’d highly recommend checking them out and maybe you could even collaborate at some point!
Hahah yeah there was a decent story behind him so I thought it fitting... Got a few more ideas too which I'm thinking about! It's just hard getting decent video to run alongside the story!

So is the story of the yokai at the beginning of the game about otakemaru who was slayed with sohaya blade? And is the protagonist a descendant of the angel otakemaru was obsessed with?
Good questions... I have a suspicion about what will be covered in the dlc coming up. I think it may be linked to some of the stuff covered in this video

Otakemaru is more like the devil of Japan. He's older than Shuten-Doji and Tamamo-no-Mae, but younger than Yamata-no-Orochi.
