Street Food in Sicily 🇮🇹 CHEESE VOLCANO ARANCINI in Catania + BEST Fish Market in Italy!

  • In this video, we are Catania! Many travellers come to Catania to catch a glimpse of Mt Etna, a giant volcano on the outskirts of the ancient port. But we’re here to EAT, so join us while we show you all of the amazing Sicilian food to try in Catania!
We are starting our morning at the insane Catania Fish Market. This place is buzzing with fish mongers screaming, chopping and transporting seafood that came fresh from the port early in the morning. For seafood lovers, this market is heaven!
    📍Pescheria di Catania
Within the market are a few seafood restaurants and street food stalls. We stopped into a fried fish joint and ordered a Fish in Cone (no bones) for breakfast! The mixed fish were fresh and super crunchy!
    📍Scirocco (inside fish market)
As the fish market slowly closed for the day, we made our way across Catania for some Sicilian treats. We stopped into a pasticceria and ordered a few dishes. The first was Arinicina Ragu, which was shaped like Mt. Etna and STUFFED with cheese! The next dish was Cassata which is a Sicilian sponge cake. It was a little too sweet for us. We also ordered our favourite Italian dessert, cannoli. These are so incredible in Sicily!!! And to wash it all down and balance the sweetness, we ordered a shakerato coffee. This caffe had a traditional feel!
    📍Pasticceria Savia
After exploring Catania in the afternoon, it was time to eat a unique Sicilian dinner. We went to a local trattoria that is famous for their horse meat, which we had never tried before. We ordered the horse fillet steak, a plate of mussels and caponata (fried eggplant salad). The horse was absolutely delicious and served medium rare, and we highly recommend trying it while in Catania!
    📍Trattoria del Cavaliere
Thanks for watching another episode of Chopstick Travel! Give this video a like if you enjoyed it! We have more coming from Italy every Sunday, so make sure to subscribe and turn on post notifications so that you never miss an episode!

There is not a good or a bad cuisine, just the one you like the best. Nobody thinks it’s silly to invest two hours’ work in two minutes’ enjoyment, but if cooking is evanescent, well, so is the ballet. Love from Korea🇰🇷💕

The Elephant (O liotru in Sicilian) at the Duomo square represents a legend about a magician (Heliodoro, and the name Liotru comes from this), which flew over Catania on top of the elephant to cast a spell on the city, and finally he was killed there.
Small elephants roamed in Sicily long before the Greeks came, so when they arrived, they found the skulls of this prehistoric animal, and because of the three holes in it, they thought they were giants with three eyes.
Now the elephant is the symbol of the city.
On the other hand, Savia isn't the best place to eat anymore. There are more delicious "tavola calda" (arancini, pizzette...) at small bars. Better the Caffè Al Duomo, with the delicious granita.
Espresso coffee in Italy is served only after a meal, or for breakfast with a croissant or a sweet.

I was born and raised in Catania. Used to go to Savia for the best Arancini. Horse meat is always served with oil and vinegar. Not to mask anything, just the way we serve pretty much any grilled meats. Next time go to Zafferana Etnea, at the foot of Mount Etna and eat at Trattoria N’Da Calata for the best, typical Sicilian cuisine. Tell them Elisa send you.

What an episode of the beautiful city! The bazaars looking great, especially the fish market. I was so amazed to see the sculptures spread all over the city. I noticed some of the old vintage signs, made of concrete with a common element of an elephant icon at the top, but the statue of the black elephant in the main square was exceptionally beautiful, the stone color, the texture, the details are so beautiful.
The food looks traditional and yummy! It seems Luke doesn't have a sweet tooth and he never enjoyed sweet, Thumbs up Chopstick Travels!

Some claim there once lived flocks of dwarf elephants at the foot of Mount Etna. Others say it is in memory of the wizard Eliodoro from the 8th century, who could turn into an elephant, or at least shape a magical elephant out of clay to carry him back and forth between Catania and Constantinople. Still others argue that the elephant stands as a symbol of the victory Catania won over Libya, and Catania was known as elephant town already during the Arab occupation. And then there are those who believe that the local elephant myth comes from an antique circus, and that the people of Catania since the 1200s have used elephants as good-luck charm to protect them against outbreaks of Etna.

I'm from Catania and I can confirm the first two theories about the dwarfs elephants (Palaeoloxodon falconeri) that lived in Sicily and Malta (problably the elephant skulls have given rise to the myth of the cyclops) and the myth of the wizard Eliodoro

Fun fact: The cassatella is also called 'minniceddi di sant'Agata' which derives from the story of the martyr Saint Agatha (patron of Catania). She was tortured by the rich man she refused to marry (as she wanted to be close to God, and vowed to remain virgin). He had her breasts cut with pincers, and so Cassatella also resemble that shape, and is often eaten during the Saint's two celebrations of the year.
Other fan fact: In Kingston upon Thames (Greater London) there's a church of Saint Agatha of Sicily, where you can see her sculpture holding a whip and the pincers.
