Dearest Mischa and Matteo. I really appreciate using your time to share with us your video of Catania. I travel with my family annually on Sicily. My mother-in-law did in the last 45 years, staying in the same hotel on Taormina. I can now persuade my husband to visit Catania and actually stay a few days there. I am so excited! We were fascinated to visit Trapani, Erice, San Vito Lo Capo, Cefalù in the past. Stay safe.💋
Well done! You visited almost all the important things to see except Palazzo Biscari and Parco Gioeni, at the end of the northern part of via Etnea, which is even bigger than Villa Bellini and, thanks to its high position, shows a wide panoramic of the entire city and of the gulf
Matteo thanks for your passion in discovering Sicilian culture. The monastery is no longer run by the Vatican and it’s used by the university, where Literature is taught. Hope this makes it a bit clearer
Hello, I happen to be a student in the Benedettini Monastery, and while it is a university (a section of the university of Catania actually) we don't study only literature, but also philosophy, communication science and more
I am a student at the monastery/university/library. It was a monastery since a while ago, now all of it is an university, like teachers’ rooms were monks’ bedrooms, some classrooms were reunion areas and so on. The library is near the entrance that you showed in the video, it was the library of the monastry, now it is closed to public, sadly.
Ahh thank you so much for clarifying that for us Alessandro! We were so confused 😅 We were really looking forward to going into the library so we were bummed we couldn’t go in when we got there, it looks gorgeous in the photos we saw online!

Next time you visit a public park look for tributes to Francesco Crispi ( born in Sicily ) the prime minister who United Italy 🇮🇹 as a country the viewers would appreciate the Italian history
16:44 Just went there today and unfortunately this entire place is closed to the public, contructions allover the place, there is so much moss and grass that has uprooted and taken over. It's a shame that it has been left to decay over time. Thankfuly there is another amphitheater that is in better condition and larger and perhaps even older that is walking distance from this. It is called "Teatro Romano De Catania". I highly everyone go and check that one out.
Very good video. I wonder if you missed the fashionable Corso Italia with boutiques and elegant stores that you don't even see in Florence. Unfortunately Catania has not been discovered yet. You should also go inside the city hall (Municipio), where you will see the most amazing paintings. And, what about the opera house? Teatro Massimo Bellini, a jewel.
Love the videos guys keep up the great work.we often visit Catania being from Malta, just a 25 minute flight for us. Good job and always stay safe Ps we love to watch you guys eating different type of foods too would love to see more of that 😀😀
Loved the portrayal of Catania. Only comment I have, is maybe carry a scarf/shawl that is lightweight in your back pack so that you can put it on when you enter churches so your shoulders are covered. May seem archaic .We used to have to cover our hair when we went to church, so times have changed, but covered shoulders for women is always a good idea. Just a suggestion. Keep up the great videos.
The Benedettini monastery is now a university, is where I study, is not a monastery anymore, it was in the past.. all those doors with the rooms are now modern teacher studios and many are classrooms, very big, inside and also in the outside part, like in the front, when you go out of the monastery.
Thank you for all your videos of Sicily. I wish we could have discovered your videos before our trip to Catania. We were there just over a month ago and loved it. Watching your videos we missed a couple of spots in Catania. We hope that on our next trip to Sicily we will spend another day there and see the places that we missed. Thank you, guys, for visiting Catania and for sharing this video on TH-cam! It is great! Please let me clarify two things. The monastery of the Benedictines was bought by the University of Catania some decades ago. This is why you will not find there any monks nor religious functions, but just students, classes and professors: nowadays it is, for all intents and purposes, a university building. The Roman amphitheater has never been reached by lava. It is under the ground because, still in Roman times, it was dismissed and afterwards the city basically "grew" on it. The main building of the faculty of law of the University of Catania ("Villa Cerami") and many other buildings and streets in that area (including the "rainbow street" that you visited, which is actually Via Penninello [Via Cerami is after the staircase]) are literally built on the amphitheater. That is: when you were stepping on the "rainbow street", you were actually stepping on the amphitheater 😃

I don't understand what you find so "confusing" about I Benedettini. It's an historical building we use as a university and a library. What did you expect? To find there monks chanting hallelujahs to the Lord?
Hi Guys thanks a lot for this! Do I see it well that not everyone is wearing outside the masks? I got the info that it became now obligatory, though hope not extreme strictly
Hi Beata, people seem to be wearing masks outside, but not all the time. We are not sure what the rules for that are here in Sicily, but it doesn’t seem to be strict!
@@TheGlobalExpats thank you very much for the info 🤗👍🏻 it would not be that enjoyable to wear it 24-7 so I am happy for your answer, thx a lot. 🙂
