Catania CITY TOUR! One of Sicily's Most Confusing Cities? Part 1

  • In this episode, we get a little lost in Catania as we attempt to tell the difference between universities and monasteries! We find Sicily's largest church, get lost in the hallways of Europes 2nd largest monastery, and tour a 13th-century royal castle in Catania, Italy.
    Catania is the second-largest Sicilian city after Palermo. It was destroyed to the ground seven times by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes from Mount Etna. The most recent catastrophic events in 1169 and 1693 forced the inhabitants to rebuild the city from scratch. The origin of the city dates back to 730 B.C. during the first arrival of ancient Greeks and this was the beginning of a long series of invasions and conquests.

    “To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything.” So wrote Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, after visiting the island in 1787. When his musings were published as part of Italian Journey, many flocked to the island, buoyed by his descriptions of its enchanting beauty.

      @@maxxam2774 Sicily has always been, until today, the most strategic piece of the puzzle (i borrow your words) in the Mediterranean area, as a commercial and a military asset. Ask to the Americans.
      The most important politic elections are in Sicily, not in Piemonte or Veneto.
      Sicily, gives to the rest of the country, the products of the agriculture they need to do not import shit from the other countries.
      Sicily is, historically, a money machine for tourism and it's growing.
      Sicily gives to the north the surplus of graduates they need to manage their business or to teach in the schools or to treat patients in the hospitals. The number of graduates, old school graduates, in the south is enormously greater than in the north of the country.

    Thank you, guys, for visiting Catania and for sharing this video on TH-cam! It is great!
    Please let me clarify two things.
    The monastery of the Benedictines was bought by the University of Catania some decades ago. This is why you will not find there any monks nor religious functions, but just students, classes and professors: nowadays it is, for all intents and purposes, a university building.
    The Roman amphitheater has never been reached by lava. It is under the ground because, still in Roman times, it was dismissed and afterwards the city basically "grew" on it. The main building of the faculty of law of the University of Catania ("Villa Cerami") and many other buildings and streets in that area (including the "rainbow street" that you visited, which is actually Via Penninello [Via Cerami is after the staircase]) are literally built on the amphitheater. That is: when you were stepping on the "rainbow street", you were actually stepping on the amphitheater 😃

    Loved the portrayal of Catania. Only comment I have, is maybe carry a scarf/shawl that is lightweight in your back pack so that you can put it on when you enter churches so your shoulders are covered. May seem archaic .We used to have to cover our hair when we went to church, so times have changed, but covered shoulders for women is always a good idea. Just a suggestion. Keep up the great videos.

    The Benedettini monastery is now a university, is where I study, is not a monastery anymore, it was in the past.. all those doors with the rooms are now modern teacher studios and many are classrooms, very big, inside and also in the outside part, like in the front, when you go out of the monastery.

    Hello you 2! I saw the new James Bond movie last night and it features Matera (bottom of the Italian boot, near Bari). I hope you get your car soon and head onto the boot. Although Matera is not well known, as more people see the movie who love old Italian hill towns, more attention will be given to Matera. I'm looking forward to seeing you there.

      @TheGlobalExpats  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Peter, that is awesome, we will have to give the movie a watch! Yes we hope to get our car this year, the process is taking a little bit more time than initially expected but when we visit Basilicata, we will definitely be covering Matera! 🥰

    16:44 Just went there today and unfortunately this entire place is closed to the public, contructions allover the place, there is so much moss and grass that has uprooted and taken over. It's a shame that it has been left to decay over time. Thankfuly there is another amphitheater that is in better condition and larger and perhaps even older that is walking distance from this. It is called "Teatro Romano De Catania". I highly everyone go and check that one out.

    Thanks for a great video! I have a question about the Green Pass. My understanding is that it is required for EU residents, but not travelers from outside the EU. Everything I've read states our CDC white vaccination card will be sufficient. Is this correct? Thanks! We'll be in Sicily soon. Can't wait!

    • @TheGlobalExpats
      @TheGlobalExpats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Melody! 🥰 Yes, it seems that the CDC white vaccination cards are being accepted here - we’ve met several people from the US who have said that’s what they’ve been using and it’s being accepted, so you shouldn’t have a problem! We hope you have an amazing trip! 🤗🇮🇹

    It’s the old Catania. It’s one of the only parts of the old city that can be seen from the new (street view) in the 90’s they stopped allowing people under there because students and teachers went missing and no one is alive today to tell us how big it is down there
