I was fortunate enough to receive a few lessons from Guthrie when I was at music college, and can honestly say the guy is an absolute genius. In my opinion he's the finest guitarist in the world. Doesn't matter what you ask him to play he does it better than anyone else. From note selection to clarity he's second to none. Not my favourite guitarist of all time, but definitely the best.
Actually I'm not a great fan of Guthrie's music at all, but can recognise his immense talent. And how does attending some masterclasses make me a groupie you fucking imbecile? He did some masterclasses while I was at the Institute of Contemporary Music. Hundreds of world class musicians have passed through there over the years, both as students and as teachers, therefore I was merely stating fact. This is the way he is, both humble and kind.
That bassist and drummer though. They nailed the backing for Sevens just based on what directions Guthrie gave them on the spot. It's obviously not the regular Sevens, but nothing sounded out of place, they're a real class act.
They are very good but even they seem barely coping at times, especially when the two leads venture outside of the usual scales about halfway into the performance.
Yeah, it's pretty crazy how well organized it sounded for an impromptu, unrehearsed performance. The only really issue I had with the song is the one specific guitar solo where the drummer was slightly overpowering when compared to the album release, but even then, the drummer was kind of on fire.
This interaction between Guthrie and Paul is much more enjoyable to watch than other videos of Guthrie with Steve Vai on the stage. +Paul Gilbert Paul you probably don’t remember me, we had lunch with Ian Campbell and a few other musicians after you did a guitar seminar up in Litchfield county back in July of 2008. I am pretty sure I mentioned Guthrie Govan to you back then , this was just before he became well known. We were talking about amazing players that I would watch on You Tube. I think both players are excellent. At this stage you cant say one is better than the other. In my teens I used to listen to Paul, Yngwie, Batio. Then slowly turning towards Greg Howe, Ritchie Kotzen, Brett Garsed etc. Now I listen to Allan Holdsworth full time. They are all good in there style. PG comes from a Neo classical , Heavy Metal ,Blues background. Guthrie is more from Jazz ,Jazz Fusion and plays every style possible invented. Paul has kept his style were Guthrie is constantly evolving. Both of my main inspiration to practice. There both amazing in there style and are super down to earth.
Its possible that Guthrie was being honest when he said they didnt rehearse. Guthrie probably gave them a heads up weeks/months prior to this gig, letting them know to learn the song. Its testament to their ability as musicians to then go and play it live first time! They were really good and the drummer especially nailed it. At the end of the day, its no different and theres no problem with this drummer imagining he's doing "his take" of this song, as if he was the guy in the studio when it was originally recorded... considering they had 0 rehearsals! Either that, or they had a semi/patchy rehearsals backstage or whatever, not a proper one with a full play through of the song before hand! Whats the drummers name btw? Anyone know?
Paul is a great person to everyone he meets. That how he is in everyday life. He loves playing guitar and wouldn't hesitate to help give you guidelines with your playing. But he's encouraging just as well. He never says this is how you do it. I do it this way and it helped , it may help you I don't know but give it a try. He knows his theory. He played already but went to Musici Institute which was called Guitar. Institute at the time. Since then he's taught many lessons there, written many articles for guitar magazines and still even if doing shows around the world takes time from his schedule to give online lessons or tips to playing. He's lost a great deal of hearing esp on the high end that's is why he where's the headphones while playing so everything can be adjusted to his hearing. Paul is a extremely warm hearted soul who still to this day is learning and practicing new things or going back relearning things he's forgotten over the years. How many people of his stature admit to watching youtube to see how a song is played? I've never heard anyone say it except him. Like he'll tell you were always learning it never stops.
Guthrie is a genius there’s no doubt about that but I love Paul’s playing over a lot of artists bcos he plays the traditional rock n roll and no one does it like Paul.
One of the best jams between a guitar hero and Guthrie - Gilbert has surprised me in recent years with his openness stylistically, his obvious passion for continuing to learn the instrument and his fantastic, fun-loving stage presence and absolutely fluid and seemingly-endless riffing, makes for a perfect 'conversation' with Guthrie, who ... well, nothing needs to be said.
Thanks for posting. Really enjoyed this because you can tell they really still find joy in each note. Also, nice to see the class of both as they complimented each other instead of trying to out play one another. Finally, really enjoyed how they took it "out" just a little near the end with the note choices and away from the pentatonic notes.
I've had the chance to see both Gilbert and Govan playing live but with their respective bands. Seeing these two monsters together onstage must have been mind-blowing, especially showing they are, at least apparently, such nice guys. Thanks for sharing!!
Why does it have to come down to who's better? Paul certainly at the end of the day has had more commercial success than most shredders. He's an icon, and Guthrie is simply other worldly. I love the world in which I love, having them both as an influence.
+Jonathan Hesbol Ego always has to point out what it believes is not enough because it never considers itself enough. It's always searching and never finding. Is automatic and only awareness and love stop it.
This may well be one of my favourite renditions of this song. Listening to Guthrie and Paul "converse" so well back and forth is absolutely tremendous.
Two of my favourite guitarists since ever. They are on the top of the guitar chain. And what awesome attitude by Paul to give some time to Guthrie to play his song. It would be awesome to be there and to actually meet those guys while they're enjoying beer. The chemistry was awesome and they had loads of fun while jamming.
To all people thinkin who's better, i say this: Paul Gilbert's prime time was late 80's and 90's. By then, every guitar player in the world immediatly recognized him as an out of this world prodigy. Probably the best. I'm pretty sure Guthrie looks at him as an idol and grateful for the experience. It's Guhtrie's reward by achieving a seat at the guitar gods table. I'm sure he feels it as each one of us would. Guthrie is a breath of fresh air and a consolidated beast amongst shredders, you may say he's the "flavour of the month". But my god, don't forget your roots and heroes when you're climbing your guitar journey. Guys like Gilbert, Petrucci, Vai, Satch, EVH, Slash, Malmsteen, B. May, have decades of awesomeness combined and inspired EVERY single rising guitarist ever since.
I found this video and every musician in it to be enjoyable! What a pure pleasure to see people having fun on the stage and playing such intense, brilliant music.
I don't know what rock I've been living under, but I need more of this in my life. I can't get enough of either of these guys. Really cool that a couple of master shredders are serving the groove and showing great taste and restraint, no toes getting stepped on. That, to me, is what musical greatness is.
He was known as the guy who could steal all your licks with relative ease and then play it back to you cleaner in his way.. He has a huuuge repository of licks in his head to make up for his shredder sense... That's why he's always so confident at improvs, always quoting other player's licks.. Even though he had to use 2 handed tapping for Lane, he could still copy Shawn Lane stuff... He has all that stored inside him
Paul Gilbert has a lot of emotion in his playing and he seems to enjoy playing. I like that. I use to listen to him in the 80's and 90's with other guitar heroes like Toni McAlpine, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joey Tafolla, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Vinnie Moore, Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen. Good times.
Holy Sons of Lemmy !!!..one of the best ...if not the best video i have seen in a long time..... !!!! that first conversation took me a long time to get over (4 repeats)
The level of fluency of these two guys across styles combined with such hyper technical ability is just jaw dropping. I love Govan's zen like personality contrasting with Gilbert's enthusiasm which is also represented in their playing.
It's fun to watch specially when you can see that they both genuinely enjoy playing with each other and the other one not feeling inferior or insecure of Guthrie's godly guitar prowess. I know it's Paul Gilbert but Guthrie is just on a different tier.
Well, I've been lucky enough to meet both these gentlemen a few times now and seen them play many times more, and I can say for sure that they are two of the most intelligent, creative, interesting & also for the record pants-wettingly funny guitarists ever. The respect they show for each other by actually listening before playing should be a great lesson to all, in particular young musicians who are about to start playing in a band. Yes, it's true, Listening actually makes you rock harder! :D
That was a great night....each night of the camp the band was doing their "amazing thing" what a delight to hear them all. I attended the dress rehearsal for WAVES and it was one time through the tune- Guthrie crouched down for the "piano" sections to give Rodney Holmes (drums) and Kelly Lemieux ( bass extraordinare) the cue to play softer. This was a great event.
Man, Paul is so good at these jams. He's perfectly clear with when he lets other play, and when he takes the impro stick, and most of his lines are relatable musically - you can hear it really well around 10:30 where they exchange lines which start on the similar note. He creates a conversation, and it's a great listen. I only wish he would include the rhythm section in the impro.
I know it's not a contest and that both are top-tier, but Gilbert has a better sense of time and playing in the pocket that gives him an edge. Fun video for sure--thanks for uploading it!
plays a chromatic pattern and resolves to a chord note. however it is much harder to do it in a tasteful way. he is incredibly talented. not only the technique but the music brain he has
They are the 2 best to ever exist fullstop. Paul just takes it for me but probs helps that he let me play him a bit of "curse of castle dragon" and "into the night" on his pgm after the gig i watched him at in Bristol about 14-15 years ago 🤯🥴
Guthrie and Paul together are fantastic, incredible, unattainable, unsurpassed, amazing! I hope with all my heart that they are two immortals! I love them! Since I first heard them I can't imagine my life without them... My life, now that I know they exist, is more beautiful than before. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!

1-800-BAD-ASS!!!....Best jam I've seen in years!.....You can't ever post too much of this Music Church!
2 humble guitar gods.. with the highest skill level... :)
It's fun to watch specially when you can see that they both genuinely enjoy playing with each other and the other one not feeling inferior or insecure of Guthrie's godly guitar prowess. I know it's Paul Gilbert but Guthrie is just on a different tier.
Are people really comparing Guthrie and Gilbert?
Why spend your time comparing Lamborghini's to Ferrari's?
Just enjoy the ride! :)
Both are flying Saucers
Hell yeahhh
guthrie more like aston martin, and paul gilbert like dodge
diospadax
And that makes you.. a wrecked car?
@@TheEchelon you know because guthrie from uk, and paul from us
Wow not an unintentional note. Guthrie's playing gave me chills a few times, his phrasing is insane
Guthrie is on another level
Man that guitar convo was so much fun to watch
Well, I've been lucky enough to meet both these gentlemen a few times now and seen them play many times more, and I can say for sure that they are two of the most intelligent, creative, interesting & also for the record pants-wettingly funny guitarists ever. The respect they show for each other by actually listening before playing should be a great lesson to all, in particular young musicians who are about to start playing in a band. Yes, it's true, Listening actually makes you rock harder! :D
All the heads that I see in front of
me. you’re living my dream. I watched this as a uni student years ago and it still inspires me :)
Two of the very best. Paul's feel is breathtaking, as is Guth's technical/fun prowess.
One of the most enjoyable guitar moments to watch and hear. Both musician are so great in their own style.
The musicianship of everyone on stage is stellar!
Paul Gilbert dat tone...
omg, two of my favorite guitarists in one stage! This is absolutely amazing! love their tones!
Excelent guitar players !
This guys have an endless inspiration!..... and a super cool talent! They're geniuses👏👏👏🤘🤘
I know it's not a contest and that both are top-tier, but Gilbert has a better sense of time and playing in the pocket that gives him an edge. Fun video for sure--thanks for uploading it!
This is just incredible stuff..Paul Gilbert and Guthrie Govan in the same room jamming..wow
Just WOW my guitar heroes!!!! What a treat I wish I could find myself in these situations watching two of the most iconic guitarist of all time
Paul's tone is just sick..Those single coils on that Ibanez i tell ya..
He rolls back the tone on his guitar like all the way, I swear haha.
That phrase Guthrie plays at 11:20 is UNREAL! How does he do it?!
Channeling some Jeff Beck.
plays a chromatic pattern and resolves to a chord note. however it is much harder to do it in a tasteful way. he is incredibly talented. not only the technique but the music brain he has
Govan and Gilbert - both are amazing guitar players. Nuff said.
Listening to Guthrie is a treat every damn time.
They are the 2 best to ever exist fullstop. Paul just takes it for me but probs helps that he let me play him a bit of "curse of castle dragon" and "into the night" on his pgm after the gig i watched him at in Bristol about 14-15 years ago 🤯🥴
One of the best guitar conversation I have ever heard..
Love the Miles quote by Govan at 9:30. It worked perfectly.
PixxyLixxx It ought to be added that the song is Jean Pierre (so that non-Miles fans can have an excuse to check out some new stuff)
Love Guthrie's bends. And Paul Gilbert's enthusiasm... always looks like he's having a great time!
That drummer and bassman I would take on the road anytime... Stellar musicians 😍
Paul gilbert was the first player that inspired me.
Guthrie is real talent and paul is great
TWO OF MY MOST FAVORITE GUITAR PLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
holy fucking shit im drinking beer tonight!!
nice username, im a huge fan of xmen myself..if you know what i mean.
***** your mom made that up? lol
i envy you bro, i really do.
+the TRUTH hahahaha. what a comment.
I really like Pauls tone here - smoother
@13:05 I GET GOOSEBUMPS EVERY SINGLE TIME my god that whole improv segment is the best thing in music history
12:17 - loving some of the more 'outside' sounds Paul and Guthrie are engaging in here!
Paul f,n Gilbert and Guthrie A.i govan two legends, that bass player tho and check out that drummer nailing it,
I cracked up at 3:21 when Paul used the many strings one note lick. I would love to know what Guthrie was thinking when he saw/heard that.
Love these two guys . Too much fun , great attitudes always and blazing face melting guitar playing .
They are made for each other. Both never leave the groove like most of the "mastery" guitarists.
Amazing how the band got it right on their first take, no rehearsal!!!
This was top notch! I really dig both Paul Gilbert and Guthrie Govan and it was great to see them together. ZZ Top is one of my all time favorite bands so the song selection was a real treat too.
