i spent almost a year playing this game once a week every wednesday, and i can say without a doubt it is still my number one favorite board game ive ever played.
I love board games, to be honest they kinda replaced mtg for me. I do agree that the market is somewhat over saturated, but it isn't that hard to find what's good. There's channels like Shut Up and Sit Down, Dicebreaker, Rahdo, Dice Tower etc. The Board Game Geek website is also very useful. Definitely recommend playing some more board games, there's so many different creative and fun experiences packed into these usually reasonably priced boxes.
with 100$ you can make even a decent EDH cube for more than 4 people to play so i won't agree with you here. It's more like when you are sick of Magic then you play some Gloomhaven and vice versa. In my Magic playgroup we actually play board version of Dark Souls this way.
That's not true, really. Board games aren't anywhere near as immersive as MTG and the hobby is kind of boring, which means people "into" board games buy LOTS of them since one or two won't satisfy them. Gloomhaven might be an exception but I assure you that it hasn't put a dent in MTG. Part of the beauty of MTG is the low setup and teardown time, whereas GH is so complicated that it will take you literally hours to read the rules and then minimum of 30 minutes to even setup and start playing.

Buying more MTG cards is going deeper into MTG, buying more board games is not going deeper into games you already own. Anyway, I tried to get into board gaming and was pretty disappointed, so I'm just sharing my opinion. MTG offers a unique level of creativity and replayability I have not seen any board game.
Love this game! My buddies and I haven getting together once a week for the past six months to play. So far we've only made it through 30 scenarios, and we are still having a blast!
Great video, Rudy. I really appreciate occasionally getting a look at different products like the video game and board game videos. Big fan of the range of content from daily box openings and discussions, white board videos, fun milestone FAQs, and these occasional appreciation videos for other card games or adjacent products. I don't usually comment, but I want to make sure these types of videos continue to get worked into the schedule every now and then.
A manager from a different department told me about this game about three weeks ago. I was looking into it, but wasn't too sure yet. It is really cool to see something like this on it, but it sure was surprising.

Absolutely love the variety of the videos. Board games is a great topic. I’ve thought about getting Gloomhaven but price/space was a little prohibitive. Seeing this box opening was great.
I still have my Heroquest game. I made my wife play it with me a couple of years ago. All of the little plastic furniture pieces and monster figurines made that game so sweet to play. I still have all of my Heroscape stuff too. I bought the Magic the gathering board game just as an excuse to drag out my Heroscape collection. I like the board game videos. Keep it up.

I saved up forever for Hero Quest when I was young. I finally got it and promptly filleted my finger open with a razor cutting the plastic figures off of their molds. Played the crap out of it. I own Gloomhaven now. It's my favorite bgame.

look up Mechs vs. Minions, published by Riot Games (the developer of League of Legends), it's gotta have the most over-the-top production of a board game. it was a passion side project, and they did not make any or just a little profit from it, which they acknoweledge beforehand.
Gloomhaven is amazing. My friends and I have finished a playthrough already and we're no playing New Game+ with our unlocks and stuff to play the quests that became unavailable due to our choices in the story. I love this thing. It's basically like playing baldur's gate with your friends all over again
Had heroquest as a kid and have played a few quests of Gloomhaven. It’s an amazing game. I enjoy the social aspect of gaming so getting a group together for the whole campaign would be tough. If I had the time I would play the solo campaign, and play it all.
My local game store does board game thursday. We used to play alot of Scythe but now due to ammount of new games we just pick something new every week. Just to keep up with market and new relases. Market is indeed saturated, but thats just hitting diffrent tastes. Many sucesfull kickstarters with quality products. Played On Mars this week, well made, slick art, everything works toghter. Inserts are included and packing everything back is so easy. And the complexity is just great. The rise of quality games, good ideas is just amazing. Compared to like 3-4 years ago market is way better and more diverse. They quality also increased.
Rudy - I am more of a board gamer than a MTG player - I haven't owned MTG cards for nearly 20 years but I own 35 modern board games. I really like it when you do boardgame videos (and old ST:CCG unboxing videos!). I wish you would do more of these just to give your opinion on some of the things out there.
They make removable sticker sets if the sticker thing turns anybody off. And one of the many organizers is very handy to have with everything in the box.
I made a video about Gloomhaven when we were partway into the campaign, and now that we've completed it many, many wonderful hours later I'm planning a follow-up video in the next couple of months. In a nutshell, Gloomhaven is the #1 game of all time for this lifelong board gamer! (Though I've been playing board games for 4 decades, I only just started playing Magic less than a year ago!)
So the achievements work as unlocks that represent the world state or connections that your party has made. For instance, there's one that you unlock that indicates that you can access character enhancements because you met and did things for the person that would offer them, a couple that represent quest progress etc. Use the app when you play, because it makes combat way faster and easier without having to sleeve up mobs or draw their actions yourself, handles all of that by just specifying which ones are there and whether they're elites and pressing next turn. 10/10 board game, would play more of (my group I play with is probably about 40 quests deep, averaging about a quest per hour and 3ish quests a session)
Love the video and love seeing new things and new games out there. Reminds me when we would have family gatherings when I was younger for Christmas and Thanksgiving and we would play risk with like 5-6 people. Me my dad my uncle my 2 cousins that were my uncles sons and my younger bro or my other uncle. There would be alliances and bribing and trying to cheat and add troops and kill people to steal their cards. I remember same games lasting like 6 hours. We would start playing before dinner take a break eat dinner relax then start back up and play till 2-3 am I was always a great time and makes me smile when I think about it as we moved away from a Montreal 20 years ago :(

My wife & I spent an entire summer playing Gloomhaven. Hundreds of hours. It took over our dining room & was as much fun as I’ve ever had playing a tabletop game. X-Com meets an early BioWare RPG... but deconstructed and made tactile.

Little behind on this one (trying to catch up on all this Rudy), but after hearing about Gloomhaven, I've always wanted to play it and it looks super fun. Sadly, I have no one to learn and play it with. :( Enjoyed the video still! I've always been impressed with how folks come up with such complex board and card games and still have them make sense.
Omg board game rudy is the best! Also, you can make a house out of a box of Gloomhaven, It's just mindblowing that this game was designed by a single person (Isaac Childres). And you're absolutely right about the board game market, THOUSANDS of new games are designed each year and only like a few games really break through each year, it's really hard to get your game noticed unless you already have made a name for yourself as a publisher/designer or you do something really spectacular like what happened with Gloomhaven (word of mouth).
This reminds me of Claustrophobia in terms of quality and build. The box has nice art, it comes with miniatures that are prepainted, and the board pieces feel sturdy.
WOW! i have to say I’m beyond amazed at the quality and care that went into this product. I wish my partner and I had the space and time to set up and play something like this, but maybe I’ll have to show her the video the see if I can get her hooked too :D

I cannot believe Rudy played Gloomhaven. I love boardgames and roleplaying games. It's 100% saturated but we're in the golden age before the bubble bursts. Loved seeing you cover Flesh and Blood recently too!
Long time MTG player... but this... this was the first board game I've ever played... the kickstarter was so insane that it was the first time I did that service as well.
Not just one expansion, a second one is in the making. By the end of this month, there will be a Kickstarter for the next game in the series, Frosthaven, too!
There's also a watered down 4-player version coming to Target, I believe this 2020 holiday season. 4 set players, maps are in a binder, not cardboard puzzles.

Loved playing Hero Quest as well! Never played Gloomhaven but heard it is a great game. Rudy check out Scythe as well. it is a very well made game with a cult following and it is very fun to play!
This game looks truly mind-blowing! That someone could even think of such a thing, and execute it to such an absurd level of quality, is just astounding to me. Sadly I'd never have the time to play it, but kudos to the creators. I hope they make a fortune👍

Love this game. It's like D&D for people without the time for D&D. Setup is a pain but it's fun stuff.

Games like this are what is taking people away from magic imo, because the $100 you spend here gets you way more gameplay than $100 of magic cards.

The mini story in the Stonekeep instruction book was amazing to me all the dark rainy gloom it was awesome. And of course Heroquest is legendary.

We smashed out a weekly12 hour session over 3 months to get through it.
Looking forward to play the expansion.

This reminds me of Claustrophobia in terms of quality and build. The box has nice art, it comes with miniatures that are prepainted, and the board pieces feel sturdy.
WOW! i have to say I’m beyond amazed at the quality and care that went into this product. I wish my partner and I had the space and time to set up and play something like this, but maybe I’ll have to show her the video the see if I can get her hooked too :D

I cannot believe Rudy played Gloomhaven. I love boardgames and roleplaying games. It's 100% saturated but we're in the golden age before the bubble bursts. Loved seeing you cover Flesh and Blood recently too!

This convinced me to finally get this plus the expansion.
Long time MTG player... but this... this was the first board game I've ever played... the kickstarter was so insane that it was the first time I did that service as well.
Not just one expansion, a second one is in the making. By the end of this month, there will be a Kickstarter for the next game in the series, Frosthaven, too!
There's also a watered down 4-player version coming to Target, I believe this 2020 holiday season. 4 set players, maps are in a binder, not cardboard puzzles.
I am all for board game discussion, Rudy. Also, more different card games. You should cover and carry Transformers and Universus.

Hi Rudy. I don't know if you will see this message, but it is worth a shot. I'm wondering what is the best thing to invest in, when you got $3000, should I buy a vintage booster box or should I invest in some singles? I have no clue what is valuable. I'm new to magic the gathering!
I liked this change of pace, especially after the over saturation of theros beyond death collectors booster boxes, both in real amount of boxes and in the past couple of months of content
Loved playing Hero Quest as well! Never played Gloomhaven but heard it is a great game. Rudy check out Scythe as well. it is a very well made game with a cult following and it is very fun to play!
This game looks truly mind-blowing! That someone could even think of such a thing, and execute it to such an absurd level of quality, is just astounding to me. Sadly I'd never have the time to play it, but kudos to the creators. I hope they make a fortune👍
Yeah there are tons of insane boardgames out there and most of them can be played via tabletop simulator on steam.
