    Finally, Canon software engineers are showing off what they’re capable! They successfully achieved a new camera on an 5-year-old sensor via a firmware upgrade! That’s what I’m waiting on! The R5C II. All these mark 1’s are nothing but DSLR technology without the mirror. They knew once they said “mirrorless” everyone was going to go buy one simply because the sensor was now in direct line and closer to the lens. The technology was still from the land before time. Compare the af of the R5 to the R6II. The R6 gives every camera Canon has a run for its money. I’m definitely looking at nothing less than MkII’s…until then It’ll be me and my 32MP R. I’ve been investing in L-Series glass until Canon quits teasing us. Notice every mirrorless mk1 camera they came out with is missing something…so you keep going up and up and up the scale until you have no choice but to debate with the R3, R5, R5C, R6,…or you purchase two cameras to do what the other one doesn’t. I was hoping the R1 would be a mesh of all of the best from each camera in one… If the R5C had IBIS and a MINI HDMI instead of a MICRO I’d purchase it. Hopefully they figure these things out with the mark2’s.

    Thanks for the update. I love how passionate you are about this.
    After hearing the updated specs, I am still on the fence.
    I love my R5 and would welcome improvements. I am hung up on the 45 MP's and was hoping for at least 60+. I crop a lot in my wildlife images, low light concert images as well as when I do rodeos. The R5 does great but in order for me to jump to the R5 MkII, I would need better features. Like better, faster more accurate focus tracking. A lot more dynamic range, dual CF Express card slots, endless burst captures so the camera won't freeze when the buffer gets filled. Maybe the new sensor will address much of this.
    As a man on a budget, I am not in the position to get the latest and greatest just to have it. I usually skip a generation because I get an upgrade that is worth the expense to get a much improved camera. If I do get and R5MkII, it will be when the used/refurbished ones came out, the bugs have been worked out and a lot of real world reviews are out there.
    Thank you for keeping us informed!

    • @user-pg4zh2tk2w
      @user-pg4zh2tk2w หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you want a camera with dual CF Express B slots, endless buffer and the best AF possible you are likely looking at a R1 camera with fewer MPs. For my photos, I have used AI upsampling software (e.g. Topaz Gigapixel) and I have made lovely 24x36 inch prints with only a 24 MP sensor. If the R1 resolution is 30 MP (rumored) the difference in linear resolution between a 30 MP sensor and 45 MP sensor is quite minimal. Resolution = sqrt(MP* vertical-horizontal ratio). 30 MP = 6708 and for 45 MP =8216. The resolution difference is 22.4%.

      @@TheNewMexicoMan I agree that the R1 is going to be costly I am guessing $6500 as well. I will be very interested in seeing what the buffer is like on the R5. Does the R5 support the write speeds of CF Express B v4 that can sustain write speeds up to 2100 MB/sec? I certainly hope so. If not the R5 I surely hope the R1 supports v4 CF Express type B cards. I currently use a R3 for action photography and on a few occasions I have maxed the buffer at 30 fps. Frankly, I would be happy with the R1 at 30 MP, 30 fps, full 14-bit, unlimited buffer. Done.

    - Decreased Sharpness: The advantage of having fewer layers above the photodiodes also presents a disadvantage in decreased sharpness.

      @alansach8437 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Far better to spend the money on better glass, and put in the work to get closer to the subject than on 20 or 30 more megapixels. I keep hearing the word "cropability" when photographers try explaining their constant lust for more pixels, but the fact remains that no matter how many pixels you have, you can't defy physics. An image is going to suffer the more atmosphere that is between the lens and the subject. As for print size, I shot for many years with my 16 megapixel 1d mark ivs. I made countless 20x30 prints (some even with minor cropping), and even a few 40×60s. I never had a single client say, "Too bad you didn't have more megapixels!" Not saying a few more pixels doesn't come in handy, but I would never upgrade based solely on megapixels. I hear in the field all the time, "Mine's 32!" and, "Mine is 45!" and, "Well, mine is 62!!" I start to wonder what they are really comparing!!

    • @FTRek
      @FTRek หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alansach8437 Not only that but physical limitation of the lenses. You always have to use best of the best to actually take advantage of more mp, and even that those are diminishing returns. I think 24mp is most optimal for overwhelming amount of photographers and 45mp are reserved for professional wildlife/landscape photographers, so a very tiny percentage.
      For majority of work, including events, portraits etc., you are more likely to suffer from more mp than actually take a real advantage of them.

    Why do you think that a stacked sensor will have better dynamic range and low light performance? Faster read-out speeds usually result in the opposite. See Nikon Z9 and Z8 compared to the Z7II and the Sony a9 and even the a1 compared to a a7r IV or a7r V.

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It does depend on how the sensor is architected - not all are created alike. more light does help with improved dynamic range and colour rendition at those lower light levels. It depends on how the sensor is stacked. The size of the amp transistors can have an impact positive or negative.
      Dynamic range is limited by the photosite depth. The key is developing them so that they do not become full and over saturated. I have over simplified the discussion, but Canon has seen what Sony has done and usually comes out with product in a final state.

    I'm guessing there will either be a high resolution version of the R5 MkII in a couple of years time that will be around 60MP or it will wait until the MkIII. 45MP is fine for most cases and certainly saves space on hard drives and time loading photos for editing. If the R5 Mk III does have a resolution bump I hope they give us the option to set it to 30, 45 & 60+ MPs as 60MP+ images are OTT for many applications. keep developing the IBIS and NR capabilities over pure resolution would be my preference. My R5 does me fine at the moment so apart from a case of GAS I think I'll be sticking with it. I would be tempted when the MkIII comes out PROVIDING Canon have started to allow the likes of Sigma/Tamaron to produce RF Autofocus lenses before it launches. Otherwise I'll look to swap systems.

I would be more inclined to believe the rumored 30 MP DGO sensor which would provide 16-stops dynamic range, solid low-light performance, and 20% more pixels than the R3. The recent announcements contradict our initial expectations (lets be honest), the leaked updates appear to be minimal enhancements. Hopefully, it will do some higher video frame rates in addition to the stills burst rate and remove the arbitrary time limit. Stacked sensor does not improve noise performance or dynamic range. The only benefit is faster readout. Compare Sony stacked sensors with non-stacked BSI sensors of the same generation - noise and dynamic range are virtually the same. First full frame stacked sensor in Sony a9 even had considerably less dynamic range than e.g. a7III. Nikon's Z9 and Z9 stacked sensors also have slightly less dynamic range than e.g. Z7II. Besides, it is virtually impossible to increase dynamic range in photo of modern sensors without increasing their size, because most of the noise is unavoidable photonic noise. BSI yes, theoretically should have better dynamic range compared to front-illuminated because they have circuitry on the other side and consequently more light-capturing surface, but this benefit is small, nowhere near full stop. The talk about increasing dynamic range of full frame camera in photo (not video, video is a different story) by one or two full stops is garbage. One gains a full stop by going from APS-C to full frame, nearly 2 stops by going from MFT to full frame, and another stop by going from full frame to medium format, but there is no other way.

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's not true. A stacked sensor is backside illuminated which improves low light and dynamic range. The improvement to readout comes from adding additional circuitry, DRAM and the signal processor .

    • @AVerkhovsky
      @AVerkhovsky หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@OrdinaryFilmmaker It is true. Improvement to DR comes from being back-illuminated, there is no benefit to DR of stacked vs back-illuminated. But in fact according to photonstophotos Canon R5 with front-illuminated sensor has about the same or even better at some ISO DR as back-illuminated Sony and Nikon sensors, e.g. a7Riii or Z7II (part of it could be due to obligatory noise reduction in Canon which Sony and Nikon does not do, but still). So even the benefit from BSI vs FSI must be very small. Comparing BSI stacked sensors vs BSI non-stacked we actually find that in most cases stacked sensors have slightly worse DR, as also noted by other commentors. Additional circuitry is exactly what stacked is, and this improves readout speed, reducing rolling shutter and making possible silent shooting with no finder blackout. In any case, all the differences in DR in modern full frame sensors are much less than a full stop, and, as I explained before, to get a further full stop or more improvement is hardly physically possible.

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, your understanding of a stacked sensor is incorrect. Rewatch the video. I was very specific. I just told you the stacked sensor is backside illuminated. All stacked sensors are backside illuminated. It's the natural progression of the sensor design. A stacked sensor is also BSI but a BSI is never stacked. And pay attention to the graphic I added. It shows the different between the three common sensor types.

    • @AVerkhovsky
      @AVerkhovsky หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OrdinaryFilmmaker I know what the sensor types are, but I think you should pay attention to what you are saying: " A stacked sensor is also BSI but a BSI is never stacked." - this is internal contradiction. Improvement to DR (although a small one) comes from BSI design (as compared to FSI), but further progression of BSI to stacked brings no improvement to DR or noise, on the contrary, there is often a small deterioration. When people say stacked they don't mention that the sensor is also BSI, but BSI sensors could be stacked or not stacked. Maybe you wanted to say that when Canon introduces a stacked sensor in R5II there will be improvement to the noise due to BSI design (which the sensor has to be if it is stacked), and to readout speed due to stacked design, but this was not at all clear. On the contrary, it sounded like being stacked by itself somehow helps DR and noise which is not true. And in any case, it is not reasonable to expect that ISO 3200 will look like ISO 1600. As it is not true to say that Sony cameras do not do more than 10fps stills. Your videos are often entertaining and sometimes informative and I am grateful to you for this, but you should be more careful checking for errors.

    • @AVerkhovsky
      @AVerkhovsky หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OrdinaryFilmmaker also, your text on the video says: being back illuminated provides faster readout speed over conventional sensors - not true. By itself, BSI design does not improve readout speed. E.g., conventional sensor in R5 reads faster than many BSI non-stacked sensors even with less megapixels.

    The Z8/Z9 are basically the same. Plus both not having a Mech Shutter is Old Hat at this point. All major Brands can either choose or not to have one in their best cameras. So that isn't even really a Huge Deal anymore. Cropped cameras should done this even before FF. Even more so for MFTs.
    Therefore the lack of any proper Pro Level cropped cameras from Canon, Nikon, or Sony is pretty much pathetic at this point. The a9iii with a Global shutter merely marked the moment in time when cameras makers would soon be starting production in Mass with that type of Tech. If you're doing portraits or landscape it doesn't matter to you, but when you also want to take pictures of your kid's soccer game you'll start to care.
