It would be an easier decision if they included more of the “pro features” in the R5ii. If it was like the R3 (big batteries for powering those big primes) with 45mp I would be pretty happy.
Or, switch to Sony so you don't have to wait and compromise. The combination of the two make it hard to stay when competitors are out pacing Canon year after year.
@@bngr_bngr You're completely wrong, yes they do. Some of the big telephoto primes have dual electric motors that only a camera like the R3 with the LP-E19 battery can power. I think the RF 100-500mm lens falls into this category also. My RF 100-500mm lens focuses faster on my R3 than it does on my R5
Wow, 32 years in the gallery biz, and this is one of the best gallery intro videos I've ever seen! I'm sure the secret is being a fantastic gallery to start with.
3:15 also there's no focusing during that 50 shot burst. Makes sense when you think of what it would take to change focus in under 0.05 seconds. Still limits when such burst are useful.

I wonder if the R1 is going to have multiple shooting options, where you'll have different resolutions, making use of the Quad Pixel AF... maybe 24 mp is the standard but then you have higher resolution shooting modes that combine high speed and efficiency pixel shift or something of the like, having 48 and 96 mp... Just throwing that out there... But, for me, the R5 ii, if it has a stacked sensor, will be the camera of choice for a upgrade. All best

Simon . . . R5 battery is not sufficient to drive both focus motors on the big telephoto lenses. Focus on those lenses, with an R5 has a lag of up to a second compared to the R3. Will the R5ii fix this?

Will the R1 and the R5 MKII also have 3x base ISO? 800/3200/12800 when shooting video RAW? I hope the R1 will also have 16Steps DR like the C400, and the R5 MKII hopefully 15 steps, this would be great😀. But I don't see any of them having the internal ND-FILTERS 😢. Now, after Canon brings the animal AF to the video OS of the C400, I hope they will bring that also in a firmware for the older R5C, as this is the one main point what I miss on my R5C.

I already knew about the 35mm f/1.4 in last September from a Canon representative at the Photopia in Hamburg, who indicated that photographers who expect such a lens in 2024 will not be disappointed. Sadly today I learned that last year's Photopia was the last ever. I am quite shocked, because that was the event where I wanted to get the R1 into my hands in October. It will now be replaced by an event for content creators.

Haven’t used the 195 on r3 yet for wildlife…30 fps has been sufficient so far… but I’ll try it and give feedback… but 50 shots limit hasn’t excited me enough to try it
The R5 has always been the better "all around" camera. But the mark ii is still an incremental improvement. The improvements are welcomed but only puts the R5 back on par from a tech standpoint. We will have to see how the gimicy features actually perform once its in a pros hands. But without a pro body and battery its a hard pass for me.
I do have the R3, and I do not think shooting over 30 fps is needed if you know what you're shooting, which you should be if you're a professionnal buying this camera.

I think Canon is missing something huge with the R1 as they did with the R3. Canon is pushing the max shooting rate, and yet they don't sell a camera that shoots at 5 frames per second. 9 fps, 6 fps... I need to prefocus for a second and then shoot an event. The total time for this event varies. I would like to have a total number of images after I finish to be reasonable. For example, I want to shoot a rocket launch with flames and excitement that lasts 15 seconds. I want to sort thru and edit around 75 images. Doing the math, I neet to shoot 5 fps. The R3 will only give me 3 fps or 30 fps or 195fps??? I have yet to nail down the fps for H and H+, but why can't I select shooting rate like my dependable 1Dx MkIII bodies? Let me choose 4 fps. 5 fps, 8 fps, 12 fps... Thoughts?
I think it is the R5 II that will be the master of everything, jack of all trades. The R1 continues to be canon's niche camera for fast action, sports photography - something they are good at.
Every photographer is different. I need a flagship-level body and battery. I need at least 45MP. I don't need video and I don't need hundreds of frames per second. That means . . . not Canon anymore. But that's why multiple brands exist. I certainly loved my Canon bodies and (most of the) lenses when they were my preferred brand. (Have you got a purchase link for the Nikon Z9?)
Genuine question please: may I ask what features lacking in the current R5 do not fulfil the requirements of a flagship, please? Is it a matter of current purchase decision vs current use case?
@@DrRussell Current R5 is a wonderful camera, but (1) it lacks the battery power to drive both focus motor systems on the big telephoto lenses. It only drives one side. As a result, focus lags significantly compared to the R3. (2) it lacks the heavy duty weather- and shock-resistance of a flagship camera. (3) it lacks the advanced AF systems of a flagship camera (smart controller, eye controlled AF, dual controls, etc.). Like I say, it's a great camera, but it lacks some of the more advanced features that make a difference for bird / wildlife photography in the wild.
@@billmartin1010I think that’s what a lot of people don’t really understand. They just say well if you want higher megapixels buy the R5ii. Those same people saying megapixels don’t matter and not realizing all the things the R5 and likely R5ii will be missing.
I have the r3, the 195 fps mode is more of a gimmick... It's 50 frames max in JPG only and its less then 1/4 of a sec. this due to the limitation of the buffer.

Multiple sources are stating this. The camera is showing up in more hands as is the R5 so I am feeling more confident of a July announcement for both cameras.
I've been shooting sports and wildlife for about a dozen years, including at the college and pro levels and have only experienced a few photographers that shoot still and video. Of course with the introduction of more powerful video features I can see more photographers trying video and more schools simplifying and saving money by just buying an 'all-around' camera body such as the R5 and using it for both. As for the 195 FPS shooting, I've used that feature in my R3 for sports like baseball, tennis, basketball. Once I have my minimum set of types of shots that the client needs (i.e. all the batters in the lineup, the pitcher front and side, etc) I'll shoot 'specialty' shots with the 195 FPS, to get, say, 'ball on the bat' photos and shots of the ball just leaving the pitchers hand. Have to be judicious though, so as not to have tons of stuff to sort through in post.
It doesn’t matter whatever the AF it horned for such a sensor with tiny pixels. This is the signature cooking of a restaurant specifically for people who is 130 years old or older. it serves the people rarely seen on the street.
R3 195fps is not so good - AF is disabled. And from memory, although I am having trouble finding it now, RAWs are at 12 bit, not 14 bit. (or is it 10 bit not 12 bit?). So, very limited. A93 shoots 120fps full RAW with AF enabled. Let's see if Canon can match that.
@@erossphelps I can see Canon matching the A93. It seems that the R1 will probably be Canon's answer to the A93 and not the A1/Z9/Z8. And if so, this is incredibly disappointing from Canon.
So, what is the greater feat of engineering? The ability for a digital camera to shoot 195 fps or the EOS 1V that could shoot 10 fps on 35mm film? While 10 fps on a 35mm camera is limited by the number of exposures on the roll of film, it still seems amazing that a camera was made that could open and close the shutter and advance the film ten times in a single second. Now we're shooting with no moving parts, it should be faster. Just some musings from one of my friends and former co-workers who still works in a camera store and literally grew up in the business.
As an amateur sports photographer the R6 Mark II is more than enough camera for me. Great resolution, dynamic range, and sufficient frame rates. When it comes to video, I’m capturing grandkids running around outdoors doing little kid stuff and other family memories.
I must be part of your minority because I don't need or want a "master of everything" camera. Video is NOT a priority for me as I shoot mostly all stills and base my camera selection on that criteria. Where is your documented source that show 60% of photographers shoot video and need all those features you tout? I am not sure I believe that statistic. My next camera will be a photography centric camera it looks like not the R5 mk2. And this is one who owns an R5. Where do I turn for a feature rich high resolution very high dynamic range photo-centric camera body for less than $5000 - $6000 USD.?
Sean - I have the R3. NEVER used it (195fps), no interest in it. I don't even use 30fps. Granted, I am using a mark 1 500f4 prime, which limits the fps to 14fps in H= mode. And I find that more than enough for me.

Yes. It will have a stacked sensor. Multiple credible sources have stated this to be true. The same source that gave usmthe R1 development announcement, gave us the stacked sensor spec.

I’m shocked people aren’t looking to the Leica SL3 as, basically the successor to the S1H. It’s no secret that Leica just uses Panasonic cameras and rebadged them and jacks the price up. The SL3 has been around for quite awhile and it’s a 8k 10bit mirrorless camera with pretty impressive specs but it’s no game changer. Perhaps Panasonic doesn’t want this to be there next camera but it would be smart for them to do something. And fast.
Any word or thoughts if the R5II will have full size HDMI? That's he first thing I want to know as a very frustrated R5 user that uses my R5 for video. Come on Canon, let's get this right this time!! PS - I can't imagine it will have ND filters, but it if does, then yes, wow! I wouldn't bet it on that though. I think that's saved for their larger, Cinema line cameras. Prob hard to do in a mirrorless body, but we'll see.

well, when you go to the plate a 100-x's a day - you're bound to get a hit sometime - kind of like a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then - but go ahead and toot your horn when you get something right - even though you're batting below the mendoza line.
What kind of pictures take R3 at 195 fps. Uncompressed RAW, compressed RAW or jpeg? Nikon did not impressed with their 11 mp jpeg. I do not know a singel photographer that use 11 mp jpeg for anything (none of them shoot sport).

I didn’t think I’d ever say this, but due to only 24mp in the R1, I’m now leaning toward the R5 II for my wildlife.

My R6Ii focuses a 400 2.8 faster than any version of my 1Dx’s. If there is a faster focus speed between the R6II vs the R3 it’s not the battery size.

I’m debating between the z8 and R5ii, I do landscape/astro and wave photography I think either of these cameras will work great for that.

during the 1980s i was a sports photographer motor drive shooting 3-5 fps and that was plenty fast
I remember when 7 fps was fast, and still consider it to be pretty fast. I also remember a film camera capable of 10 fps...

A93 is 120 fps with full AE metering in addition to 120 fps with AF, definitely interested in Canon's response...
@@erossphelps I can see Canon matching the A93. It seems that the R1 will probably be Canon's answer to the A93 and not the A1/Z9/Z8. And if so, this is incredibly disappointing from Canon.

So, what is the greater feat of engineering? The ability for a digital camera to shoot 195 fps or the EOS 1V that could shoot 10 fps on 35mm film?
While 10 fps on a 35mm camera is limited by the number of exposures on the roll of film, it still seems amazing that a camera was made that could open and close the shutter and advance the film ten times in a single second. Now we're shooting with no moving parts, it should be faster.

As an amateur sports photographer the R6 Mark II is more than enough camera for me. Great resolution, dynamic range, and sufficient frame rates.
When it comes to video, I’m capturing grandkids running around outdoors doing little kid stuff and other family memories.
I must be part of your minority because I don't need or want a "master of everything" camera. Video is NOT a priority for me as I shoot mostly all stills and base my camera selection on that criteria. Where is your documented source that show 60% of photographers shoot video and need all those features you tout? I am not sure I believe that statistic. My next camera will be a photography centric camera it looks like not the R5 mk2. And this is one who owns an R5. Where do I turn for a feature rich high resolution very high dynamic range photo-centric camera body for less than $5000 - $6000 USD.?
Probably have to go with Nikon or Sony for that
Sean - I have the R3. NEVER used it (195fps), no interest in it. I don't even use 30fps. Granted, I am using a mark 1 500f4 prime, which limits the fps to 14fps in H= mode. And I find that more than enough for me.

Regarding the speed of the R1 .. well Jan Wegener sure loves (for birds in flight) the 120 fps of the a9iii, so when the R1 likely doubles that he won't be able to resist it, even when he dislikes it getting only 24 mpickles ..

I don’t see the point of the release of (panasonic ) the mft camera now and not having a high resolution camera with proper autofocus on sale. they are missing on studio portrait photo/videographers all together
Hey Simon, I see that there is a 1.4.0 firmware upgrade for the R6 Mark II I didnt see any announcement and while I was looking for Canon Software for a new pc build. it was listed.
Did otehr camera get fixes? Did not even seea announcement on Canon Rumors.

Yes. It will have a stacked sensor. Multiple credible sources have stated this to be true. The same source that gave usmthe R1 development announcement, gave us the stacked sensor spec.
I'm beginning to think not. I've heard rumors that Canon's new chip manufacturing equipment is having issues.

If panasonic would have a 45-50mp full frame camera i think it would do well, they have affordable sigma glass and great video specs. Wish there was sigma art lenses for nikon z8 and canon r5
I’m shocked people aren’t looking to the Leica SL3 as, basically the successor to the S1H. It’s no secret that Leica just uses Panasonic cameras and rebadged them and jacks the price up. The SL3 has been around for quite awhile and it’s a 8k 10bit mirrorless camera with pretty impressive specs but it’s no game changer. Perhaps Panasonic doesn’t want this to be there next camera but it would be smart for them to do something. And fast.
Any word or thoughts if the R5II will have full size HDMI? That's he first thing I want to know as a very frustrated R5 user that uses my R5 for video. Come on Canon, let's get this right this time!! PS - I can't imagine it will have ND filters, but it if does, then yes, wow! I wouldn't bet it on that though. I think that's saved for their larger, Cinema line cameras. Prob hard to do in a mirrorless body, but we'll see.

Agreed. A lot of these ultra-high frame rates (from all brands) are PR gimmicks. They come with so much baggage that they're not terribly useful.
For high level sport shooters more is welcome. I presume same goes for birds and wildlife.

I think we need to work breathing exercises. Im telling myself that the r5m2 will be in our hands by November (factoring short supplies, shipping, high demand etc)
If the C400 announcement / timeline is any indication, November is probably on the early end of the range.
Probably it’s just me thinking that but I’d like to see some sort of a r6c, RAW light with a true 4K sensor with around 12 megapixel for run and gun short documentaries. Oh and a full size HDMI😂
A lot of rumors over and over, smh. With all due respect, about time the R5 MK 2 catch up with the others that Sony and Nikon have currently. 8K is been around a min. Don’t know what you mean about WOW as they would make sense if you are a Canon shooter and invested in Canon but donate enough for a Sony , Nikon, Fuji Panasonic shooter to move to Canon.

What Canon does with it Top Models gives some insight to what can be expected to eventually Trickle down the lineup. So that comment is for those that don't get why everyone can be intrigued about CAMERAS we can't afford. Plus, for the Folks saying, well a 45MP stacked sensor would be Canon just catching up, Well a Camera is more than just the Sensor alone.

Imho, put the R5ii in a large body and call it the R1. In a small body, call it the R2. The so called upcoming R1, the R3ii. A 60MP body, the R5ii.

What kind of pictures take R3 at 195 fps. Uncompressed RAW, compressed RAW or jpeg?
Nikon did not impressed with their 11 mp jpeg. I do not know a singel photographer that use 11 mp jpeg for anything (none of them shoot sport).
