    Love the line: I'm not a "female scientist." I'm a SCIENTIST....
    It's past time to stop adding gender to words that don't need it to begin with. You are a scientist or you are not.

    The was amazing. Thank you for putting Rosalind Franklin at her rightful place. Watson, Crick and Wilkins were all thieves, brilliant but still thieves. Watson in particular is rather an ass. Anyways, I'm sorry she never got to see the world finally recognize her invaluable contribution to the discovery of DNA's structure.

    I think there is a racist ( I rarely if ever use that term) undertone in this enterprise, Mr. Science teacher. Why do you have black kids rapp a major scientific discovery. Do you mean that the best way to have them get some interest in Science is to have them rapp it in a song. It is subtle, but it is there. At any rate, it is a great production! I burst out laughing when they say : It has not escaped our notice that you are a jerk!

    • @sciencewithtom

      Hi Badaxe. Thanks for the note. Check out the rest of my channel. There are kids of all races rapping about all sorts of different topics within science. After checking those out let me know if you still have concerns. I look at creative music video projects as a way to get any middle schooler engaged in any piece of core content.

    I love this! I would love to see a science history rap video based on the very public feud between the late Al. Cotton and Greg Robinson in the field of inorganic chemistry. Robinson had published a paper with a crystal structure and other data that contained an iron-gallium triple bond. Cotton and others attacked Robinson for his work.

    This is an interesting twist on the tale. Crick and Watson obtained some of Franklin's data without her permission, but the reason was that Maurice Wilkins (mentioned cursorily in the video but who is perhaps the real bad guy in all this) gave Watson and Crick Photo 51, which was really taken by Ray Gosling under Franklin's supervision. Watson and Crick used this photo to support a hypothesis they were already adopting on the structure of the DNA molecule. This is not the only thing they contributed however, they had remarkably precise models of DNA and had essentially worked out all the details without Franklin's help, but they had hypothesised multiple versions and Photo 51 was what ultimately swayed them to select the double helix model. Franklin was very niggard about her discoveries however, and did not like to share them with anyone. Wilkins knew that if he had asked her for it she would have declined to provide her data, so he went behind her back to help Watson and Crick out.
    Now James Watson was disrespectful to Franklin, but this was not so much out of sexism, as it was out of her rudeness and bad attitude toward most of her colleagues. She was incredibly antisocial and made a conscious effort not to let theorists observe her experimental findings because if she could help it, she liked to have all the credit for any discoveries. She was a remarkable scientist, but wasn't very easy to work with. Today, she is depicted as this innocent little angel who had her work "stolen" by the diabolical Watson and Crick. It's true that she was near an understanding of DNA structure, but she did not have very accurate models. Essentially she knew roughly what DNA would look like, based on her crystallography.
    She was not awarded the Nobel Prize for but one reason: the Nobel Prize is not awarded posthumously. She died before she could have received it. And actually Watson and Crick, though they didn't like her, made a conscious effort to acknowledge her contributions. They didn't in their original papers count her as a co-discoverer, but later were very generous about saying how her work had influenced the overall development of their theory in its later stages. I must say, all three of them were remarkable scientists and each made many other contributions to science. Don't forget to acknowledge that this was one of many brilliant ways they all helped our understanding of the world.
    One more point, the video makes a 'diss' at Watson and Crick's chasing models (albeit a good joke) and not getting data the hard way. Well, science takes both experimentalists and theoreticians. Experimentalist like Franklin do what they do so that they can provide evidence for hypotheses theoreticians come up with. You can't just have data, you have to have correct interpretations of that data. This is how science works.

    Franklin's supervisor, according to PBS, got lonely and went to Franklin's competition and talked to Watson about her work just to have someone to talk to. BS!! This was intellectual espionage. He deliberately took Franklin's superior work to his old friend Watson. Espionage, sabotage, and just plain theft. Watson kept coming up with nonviable models until he was given access to Franklin's work.

    Respect to you, but maybe a follow up rap project could investigate James Watson's racist ideology? The one that states that people of African decent (isn't that all of us?) are genetically inferior. Just google and you'll find articles from newscientist etc. dating from 2007 onwards Watson was forced to retire in disgrace. Without this addition, I find this video will come across as a bit naive. The rappers, at least, should be told.

    Hay kids! What is time? What's a pendulum? What is Mass? What goes up in phase with phosphate and down in phase with sugar? How does that feel? What goes up in fear and down in hate? Was something lost in space Mr. Observer wants back? Is hate connected to greed? Is there a lesson for society here? Why did she withhold it? What did she see? What was Einstein saying about dice? Can you feel electromagnetism? Is gravity involved? Is the electric force involved? What game won in Sept 2011? v-c/c=?

  • @theEx0du5
    @theEx0du5 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually, the book is pure garbage if you are concerned about accuracy. The book itself is political theater, hugely inflating the work of Watson and Crick. It is full of misogynistic dismissal of Franklin and was clearly Watson's attempt to write the history of DNA discovery in their favor. Later, Watson showed his racist side and, of course, never achieved anything that wasn't stolen. Franklin's life was filled with discoveries. The book can be tossed.

    Tom,
    Teacher question- What order did you do the lessons? Learn the history, write the lyrics, shoot the video or did you do the lyrics and the kids act it out/create the beat? Do you have more than one class or students working on this? How did you divide the tasks? Thanks! Want to try applying this idea to my middle school kids, but have a hard time seeing how I could get all of them assessed/involved.
