Linda Lavin also appeared on an early episode of "Rhoda" (as Rhoda's former high school rival who shows up at Rhoda's wedding shower). The MTM casting people obviously liked her. I wonder if these appearances are what brought her to the attention of CBS when they were casting "Alice".
The overwhelming envy that Phyllis is exhibiting here proves what a narcissist she is. I used to enjoy this program, but now I see how much she was like my mother. I watch for everybody else in the cast. This is not against Cloris herself, but against the character of Phyllis.
And believe it or not, she was even more obnoxious when she was a supporting character on "Mary Tyler Moore". They tried to make her a bit more "likeable" when they gave her her own show, given that she was going to be front-and-center as the starring character, and still she was still incredibly grating. If someone ever compiled a list of the top ten TV characters whom you wouldn't want to get stuck on an elevator with, Phyllis would have to top the list.
@@mthivierI agree I couldn't stand Phyllis on MTM show. She is softer and more likeable on Phyllis.i never watched it when it came out because of her Character but I found it here and i enjoy it
I thought Phyllis was hilarious! Her snobbery, self-aggrandisement, high-falutin' ways and snootiness made her the woman you loved to hate. Any episode of MTM was brighter when Phyllis was in the cast.
Phyllis is insufferably narcissistic like my mother. I watch for everybody else in the cast, whom I like greatly. And that theme song...🥸 Suffice it to say Broadway isn't my thing.
I wish this was on dvd

Wow, these old shows are well written
In this episode Linda and Cloris togheter. Great! I Remember with joy this series. Alice too.
I am loving this series! :)
"When on a job interview, never ask the interviewer if she's had a nose job." Gotta love Phyllis! ;)
Go pop j j so up my
Loved Linda Lavin
Outstanding job fellas!!
Linda Lavin 💗
She guested on Rhoda too
She played a b-tch on that show, too.
Sounds like jealousy to me.
The ones who made this show was Mother Dexter, Jonathan and Audrey. They could've left Cloris Leachman and her daughter, Bess out of the show.
Linda Lavin as Det. Janice on Barney Miller was one of her best roles.

Alice!!
Well acted the last few minutes
I'm trying to watch this series but I never cared for the character Phyllis on MTM and a whole show with her I find myself fast forwarding a lot.

I wonder how a spin off with the Brenda character would have fared?
@@johnbrowneyes7534 , well Julie Kavner is another comedy genius.
