the writers of MTM Show and Phyllis came up with the idea... The thing is, Bess is such an intelligent person, it would have made sense if she'd come up with the idea on her own. I have a few relatives and friends who don't call their parents mom/dad. In retrospect, I wish I could've done that with my own parents! It's actually a testament to Lisa Gerritsen's talent that most people think Bess was on like every other week on the MTM Show for the 5 years that the Phyllis character was on the show. In fact, Lisa only appeared about 10 times total. And she was not even on "Phyllis" every week.
