How To Collect Over 11,000 CDs

  • As the title states, I have over 11,000 CDs in my collection. Each album was searched out and collected for a specific reason (no blind buys) making my collection a fully curated library of music. This video will go through how I did that and ways you can build your collection too.

    Here's a crazy fact. If the average CD is 45 minutes, it will take you almost a year to listen to all 11,000 CDs non stop.

    Trying to get my obsession under control as slowly working to alphabetize my collection. Last count was 3369 jewel cases; 19 singles; 115 box sets; 1502 digipacks.
    More in mail to arrive this week, lol.
    Great post, Brendon. 💯

      I’m not a fan of alphabetical. Genres, type, era etc are good ways of sorting into different areas. I have compilations, soundtracks, NOW albums, pop, R&B, girly music, rock etc etc. Plus, alphabetically it means you have to keep moving the whole lot.

    Interesting video! I’ve been buying/collecting CDs since the late 80s. I don’t have anywhere near what you have but it’s a nice little collection of basically everything I like. I don’t have many complete catalogs of bands. There are several bands or artists where the greatest hits is good enough for me. Over the past few years, I’ve been buying lots of used CDs on eBay.

    All solid bits of advise. As one that can compete with your collection, I’ve followed that formula. I try to not buy a greatest hits or best of unless there are new unreleased tracks on it. I will admit there are several in my collection that I don’t particularly care for but that’s because of the time I spent in the industry getting free promo and stuff like that. I always went into it as trying to like it or see if it grows on me, but there are times when it doesn’t. I was gonna do a quick purge and eBay some of those items to make space for others that I do want! I’ll also try to buy direct from the band if I can. This way I know they’re getting paid for it. Continued happy collecting!!!!!!

    I'd say knowing your labels and producers will also take you down rabbit holes. I mainly do electronic music and may not be as relevant to other genres but this definitely helps me to discover new music constantly. For example if I see it's released by Spirit Zone or TIP then it's ought to be good. I made countless "blind" purchases based on this and never was really disappointed.

    Bought my first CD in 1984, in anticipation of my first CD player, purchased March 1985.
    My first CD bought was The soundtrack to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Amazed me first time I heard it, zero noise, zero wow and flutter, pitch perfect.
    Yes, high end analog could have these characteristics back then and even back into the early 70s, but was way too expensive for a kid in a working class house.
    The cassette decks I could afford were always off speed enough to affect pitch that I could hear.
    However, even lower end turntables could sound pretty good, assuming the speed, wow flutter were good, and the record pressing was good from the factory and not dirty, scratchrs. Too many noisy pressings from the factory in the 70s, 80s, which is why CDs were such a revelation for low end, mid fi setups in the 80s

    A question from a newer CD collector. How do you feel about the more recently released 5 or 3 original album classic box sets that come with each CD in a cardboard sleeve? I am drawn towards buying a lot of these especially for hard to find and early albums like the early Fleetwood Mac with Green or the early Styx albums before Dennis Deyoung. As a music fan I really want this kind of material in my collection, as a collector I know these will never have near the value as individual jewel case releases. What is your advice? Thanks

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have lots of them and because sometimes those collections offer an out of print album as the only way to get it, I think they’re great. That said, I prefer the original jewel case editions when available.

  • @mutant_blues
    @mutant_blues 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Excellent video Brendon! One question: If one of your favorite bands releases an album that you don't like but it's the only one you miss to complete their discography, will you buy it?

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I find generally albums work at the time they are released so I enjoy them for being new when they come out. But it may be in time that I don’t return to the album as much because the band has better albums. As for older bands that I wasn’t into at the time their albums came out, if I’m not into the album I won’t buy it until I change my mind. That’s why there are still albums from major bands that I can be buying today. I only buy albums from a band when I’m into them.

    Super! I have about the same amount of cd's and 1500+ Lp's...but I can honestly say I have a few stinkers in there too, just because some bands I collect have "bad" albums in their catalogue or some releases have dreadful sound, or there might be a few artists that I use to like, but can't stand anymore, and also because sometimes I like to buy bands I know nothing about just because I like to be surprised. And because at a certain point in time I would get rid of some cd's I didn't like (anymore), but have stopped doing that, I might have a few stinkers around. 11,000 CDs should indicate a vast and varied collection. But sadly it seems not to be the case. First thing I notice is no women and no people of colour. Limiting yourself to just classic rock and metal genres is really missing out on so much. Instead of a 51st LA Guns CD, how about some hip hop, some country, something you can dance to, some indie pop or new wave?

      Clearly you don’t know the viewers on this channel because there are still lots of us who love CDs. Just look at the store. And yes I do have a vinyl collection as well. I just prefer CDs.
