One of my favorites is the PC Engine CD version of Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys, especially because it dubs all of the dialogue. The quality of the voice acting is exactly what you would expect from an official release of the time.

And also, Shin Megami Tensei 1 actually did get officially localized by Atlus in the iOS Apple Devices before they discontinued selling it in the Apple Store years ago.

I'm guessing the kerning of the text in the Neon Genesis Evangelion game is due to the game being programmed to expect Japanese text. This is often one of the difficult aspects of fan translation: finding a way to fit English words into spaces intended to hold Japanese. If that's the case, I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope for a patch fixing this as they may have done the best job possible. Anyhoo, the one I really want to see translated is Sega GaGa.
For Dreamcast, mine are (knowing some JP and having played them) - Despiria (highly unlikely - it's a really obscure, 'huge' VN/RPG by Atlus) and El Dorado Gate - RPG series by Capcom, in quite a few volumes; probably more likely, but time will tell. Then - SegaGaGa as well, it might be fun! Of course, the other Sakura Wars games would be good too. There's a lot of PS1/PS2 stuff as well, and 'some' for the earlier consoles. The newer the consoles, the more stuff gets localized thankfully.
I'm super impressed by the team that did their own voice acting. I remember you commenting on the sheer amount of voice in the Left In Japan and how that was an impediment to localization. Leave it to the amateurs to prove that wrong!

Having learned Japanese and moved to Japan, I feel like I have a super power in not needing fan translations anymore. Glad these projects exist though. Most of these games wouldn’t have received attention overseas without them.
The spacing in the words of the typing game is probably a leftover from the Japanese language where they mostly use 2 letter syllables to make up words. A translation patch for Surging Aura is actually in the works. I hope it gets released soon!
The text from Columns 2 from doctors were hysterical! (Pause the video for it!) My favorite one is “Studies have shown that Columns 2 either cures or causes cancer.”

I've been a fan of Gamesack for a few years now. I truly enjoy the high production value. There is clearly a lot of care and effort put into creating this series. The host and his previous cohost are very well spoken. Might I also add that they have fantastic on air personalities. It's so weird how every bit of Evangelion marketing seems to ignore the tone and context of the original series. Except for Maya getting hot by seeing somebody typing...
Oddly enough Sega did finally released one of the Sakura war games in the US for the PS2. Oh fun fact the anime for the sires has been out in English for ages. Also the characters are actually Project X Zone as well alongside a few other games.

I've been having a good time exploring translated PC Engine games with the new Terra Onion device. Gekisha Boy, the photography game Dave reviewed in a left in Japan is even more fun when you know the pictures your boss is asking for. There is also a really cool mech RPG that has Phantasy Star-esque scrolling dungeon segments. It's also made by Sunsoft, so the music rules.
Yeah,specially for rpgs still japanese only : the best version of Shin Megami Tensei and Burai (a game most latin americans and european Saint Seiya fans would love to play). The normal Mega Drive still have good Falcom ports as well :Sorcerian and The Legend of Heroes 1 and 2 t,a shame they were forgotten.
Sega CD would be cool because it would only take 4-5 translations to get the whole library of decent games available in English, but there are a few good exclusives to have. Saturn is finally getting translations but it's only 10% there in terms of getting every great game in English. PCE CD is probably even further behind.
I love Sakura Wars (games & animes). Bulkslash is an awesome game & the fact that they even fan-dubbed the voice overs in addition of translating the text into English is truly a sheer dedication.
Love the content! It was great to see Sakura Wars covered One small note: Sakura Wars GB did have a released peripheral that gave you extra goodies - was a pokewalker-like device that had cute minigames that connected to the game boy via IF. Great memories of playing the game and the Pocket Sakura all throughout high school!
Kinda like the thing for the Japanese version of Pokemon Crystal that unlocked the Celebi quest (Said quest being that one thing added to the 3DS eshop version of Crystal)
I recently got ODEs for my Saturn and Dreamcast and came across the Sakura Wars Columns translations and though "Joe sure would LOVE these..." I'm surprised how positive you were about it, I know matching puzzle games aren't your thing, but I love them.
Surging aura has a French translation, I am natively French speaking so it is amazing to have for once a game translated in French instead of English. There is also a Russian version of that game. Know you have to learn French 😜
Bulk Slash is my favorite Saturn game and I had no idea that its English translation had been completed already so I'm stoked that you covered it in this episode. I hope this helps it get the exposure it rightfully deserves, what a great game.

Loved the ending scene. Flashback is one of my favorite games. I would recommend learning the controls by reading the manual. There's a spot at the beginning of level 2 that you might get stuck on if you don't understand the controls.
Instead of making up stories of why the Sega Saturn Sakura Wars was not translated to English by Sega of America you could have just said that Sega of America's management simply had no intentions to translate these games to English... Also as for the voice acting and the style... look no further to just a text translation with no voice acting would have been ok for back then but as for the style, your heroes Tom Kalinske and Bernie Stolar believed that the game consumers were eternal twelve year olds... need any proof?youtube search Bernie Stolar GDC 1999 and look at the game Tom Kalinske prioritized during the Genesis and then shoved into the Sega Saturn 1995... Bug! was no accident... they were forcing it like they forced the crap Sega of America Saturn launch gamepad designed by Sega of America... The sad reality of Sega Saturn has to do with how Sega of America treated the "Sega fanbase" it has nothing to do with the launch price of the Sega Saturn or the alleged low number of owners... all of that was created by none other than Sega of America's management decisions... the SAME decisions that made sure key games never got Cartridge versions during 1994 to 1998 because they were exclusive to Sega Channel.
You nailed it.The same problem happened with Sega support on PS2 and PS3 era: all games considered too japanese as Yakuza series and Sakura Taisen games were undermined by them. It took years and years until they release some games. Playstation 2 even received a remake of the original game around the time the anime was released in America!But they skiped it anyway.
@@carlosaugustodinizgarcia3526 NISA wanted translate all PS2 Sakura Wars games, but Sony rejected help with localization. NISA ended with solo translating the newest one - Sakura Wars 5 So Long My Love, which was released in West way too late.
I still want a Persona 4 remaster for the PS5 or at the very least PS4. Even if it’s digital only I’ll buy in a heartbeat. Come on Atlus, do it for this RPG fanatic.
Very interesting episode, I just want to thank the team who released the Seiken Densetsu III English patch, my favourite Snes JRPG ever!! Oh and btw, shampooing and conditioning absolutley does damage your hair by removing all the natural oils and making already thin hair brittle and break off. Warm water is all you need to wash your head and finish of with a small amount of good oil like olive oil.

Two great English fan translations of Japanese only games that haven't been mentioned here are Policenauts (1994). Designed by Hideo Kojima, best known for the Metal Gear/Solid games. The PS1 version in 2009 and the Sega Saturn in 2016. Also Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn (AKA Ni no Kuni: The Jet-Black Mage) The first game in the series. Originally released 2010 on the Nintendo DS only in Japan. It was first translated to Spanish then later to English in 2018. Both excellent games.
Now that AWESOME that sega did made a game for the gameboycolor back in 2000(1 year before they gave up on the dreamcast) how cool is that? Only shame is they wasted 2MB of voice samples wich they never used at all,except for the restored translated one,BUT. a hacker could cut the rom size in half to be 2MB for the used content just in case you only got 2MB left on your sd card to dump roms on it,hahaa, Now that the gameboycolor to dreamcast cable NEVER existed is no surprise to me since rival sega never(hardly) had any deal with nintendo, only in extreme rare cases,anyway thx for mentioning this😁👍🙏
Ys,Legend of Heroes,Snatcher,SD Snatcher,Metal Gear series,Xak.Yeah ,the MSX community rocked and translatated most of the classics. Still waiting for a translation of MSX version of Final Fantasy I.The ost is amazing.

Excellent video Joe! I can't believe Bulk Slash has been translated, voice acting in English too! It's one of my all time favorite Saturn games. I had know idea it had twin stick playability, definitely going to be trying that out! Very excited for this!

Sakura Wars: So Long My Love made it's US debut on the PS2 and Wii, though both will run you some money to get on the second hand market. The PS4 Sakura Wars game is still cheap if y'all want to give the series a go.
I swear, if this GBC-Dreamcast Link Cable for Sakura Wars was real, it would have been a total collector's piece. Other than that, I am really impressed that they actually did English voice acting for the mech game on Saturn.
I got the English Patch to work on Sakura WRs GB but I still can’t get the original Saturn Sakura Wars English Patch to work, only Japanese version works on my Saturn emulators as bin/cue file and I can’t patch it and downloading the pre-patched version gives me error, anyone can help me with this, plz?

Hey Joe, can I make an important suggestion, well maybe two. A. I kind of spaced out for a second when you said the name of "Bulk Slash." That's on me... however for the REST of the coverage you NEVER mentioned the name of the game a second time? Try to use the name of a game once per paragraph it'll make it sound better. If you want a second hint, try to replace any time you say "The game" with the name of the game. Obviously you don't want to say the game's name a ton but if you say "The game" you usually can replace it with the title. B. Minor comment, but please put chapters on your videos so people can skip around, you can even make it "Game 1" Or something else if you really feel like you have to hide the titles, but it's better to use the names. If I space out I have to guess when the section began. Or If I'm not interested in a video game, I have to guess where the next one is. I also don't know how long the current section is. The first piece though is really important and I think it'll improve your scripts.
'Bulk Slash' and 'Stellar Assault SS' have been legitimate goldmine discoveries for me. The work and dedication those guys put into their translations is truly exceptional.
And of course the biggest thing with SMT, is the portrayal of YHVH and the Devil. Personally though I hope Segagaga gets an english fan translation. Keep up the good work Joe! Hope you do more Fan Translation videos!
I have been thoroughly enjoying your channel for a few months now that I found it. Great content and love the segments. I must say the improvements you have made in your production truly shines as I see some of the older segments. I learned about fan translations from your channel and started going down the rabbit hole of which ones got a translation. Could you ever make a "How to video" on playing a translated game? I loved Shining Force 3 on the Saturn and was bummed the other 2 scenarios didn't come out. I found you could play a translated version of them, but I don't know how you can do it. I would also like to play Dragon Force 2 which also has a translation. That woudl be awesome to show as I've no idea how it works. Thanks and keep on making your videos. Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 are fantastic games with killer soundtracks. I still replay them once every few years.

The new Sakura Wars game on PS4 in 2019 also came to the US but unlike So Long, My Love, they left the vocals in Japanese

One small note: Sakura Wars GB did have a released peripheral that gave you extra goodies - was a pokewalker-like device that had cute minigames that connected to the game boy via IF. Great memories of playing the game and the Pocket Sakura all throughout high school!
Kinda like the thing for the Japanese version of Pokemon Crystal that unlocked the Celebi quest (Said quest being that one thing added to the 3DS eshop version of Crystal)
I recently got ODEs for my Saturn and Dreamcast and came across the Sakura Wars Columns translations and though "Joe sure would LOVE these..." I'm surprised how positive you were about it, I know matching puzzle games aren't your thing, but I love them.
Surging aura has a French translation, I am natively French speaking so it is amazing to have for once a game translated in French instead of English.
There is also a Russian version of that game.
Know you have to learn French 😜

Bulk Slash is my favorite Saturn game and I had no idea that its English translation had been completed already so I'm stoked that you covered it in this episode. I hope this helps it get the exposure it rightfully deserves, what a great game.

Loved the ending scene. Flashback is one of my favorite games. I would recommend learning the controls by reading the manual. There's a spot at the beginning of level 2 that you might get stuck on if you don't understand the controls.
Instead of making up stories of why the Sega Saturn Sakura Wars was not translated to English by Sega of America you could have just said that Sega of America's management simply had no intentions to translate these games to English...
Also as for the voice acting and the style... look no further to just a text translation with no voice acting would have been ok for back then but as for the style, your heroes Tom Kalinske and Bernie Stolar believed that the game consumers were eternal twelve year olds... need any proof?youtube search Bernie Stolar GDC 1999 and look at the game Tom Kalinske prioritized during the Genesis and then shoved into the Sega Saturn 1995... Bug! was no accident... they were forcing it like they forced the crap Sega of America Saturn launch gamepad designed by Sega of America...
The sad reality of Sega Saturn has to do with how Sega of America treated the "Sega fanbase" it has nothing to do with the launch price of the Sega Saturn or the alleged low number of owners... all of that was created by none other than Sega of America's management decisions... the SAME decisions that made sure key games never got Cartridge versions during 1994 to 1998 because they were exclusive to Sega Channel.
You nailed it.The same problem happened with Sega support on PS2 and PS3 era: all games considered too japanese as Yakuza series and Sakura Taisen games were undermined by them.
It took years and years until they release some games.
Playstation 2 even received a remake of the original game around the time the anime was released in America!But they skiped it anyway.
@@carlosaugustodinizgarcia3526 NISA wanted translate all PS2 Sakura Wars games, but Sony rejected help with localization. NISA ended with solo translating the newest one - Sakura Wars 5 So Long My Love, which was released in West way too late.

Oh and btw, shampooing and conditioning absolutley does damage your hair by removing all the natural oils and making already thin hair brittle and break off.
Warm water is all you need to wash your head and finish of with a small amount of good oil like olive oil.

Adding English voice acting to bulk slash was a huge surprise and an amazing effort from the the team.
We now have the english translation of the Shin Megami Tensei 1 for GBA, that has a lot of improvements over the SNES original

Two great English fan translations of Japanese only games that haven't been mentioned here are Policenauts (1994). Designed by Hideo Kojima, best known for the Metal Gear/Solid games. The PS1 version in 2009 and the Sega Saturn in 2016. Also Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn (AKA Ni no Kuni: The Jet-Black Mage) The first game in the series. Originally released 2010 on the Nintendo DS only in Japan. It was first translated to Spanish then later to English in 2018. Both excellent games.
DS and 3DS still have some underlooked rpgs like the Xenosaga I-II downport and the original version of Dragon Quest XI.

Now that AWESOME that sega did made a game for the gameboycolor back in 2000(1 year before they gave up on the dreamcast) how cool is that?
Only shame is they wasted 2MB of voice samples wich they never used at all,except for the restored translated one,BUT. a hacker could cut the rom size in half to be 2MB for the used content just in case you only got 2MB left on your sd card to dump roms on it,hahaa,

Excellent video Joe! I can't believe Bulk Slash has been translated, voice acting in English too! It's one of my all time favorite Saturn games. I had know idea it had twin stick playability, definitely going to be trying that out! Very excited for this!

Oh, I see! I sold my original copy a couple years ago, very sad day but I will be playing this translated version for now on.
@@GameSack Knight of Dragon discovered a hidden fourth option that was unused in the control options, so he used this to make the game compatible with the Twin Sticks - awesome!

Sakura Wars: So Long My Love made it's US debut on the PS2 and Wii, though both will run you some money to get on the second hand market. The PS4 Sakura Wars game is still cheap if y'all want to give the series a go.
I swear, if this GBC-Dreamcast Link Cable for Sakura Wars was real, it would have been a total collector's piece.
Other than that, I am really impressed that they actually did English voice acting for the mech game on Saturn.

I got the English Patch to work on Sakura WRs GB but I still can’t get the original Saturn Sakura Wars English Patch to work, only Japanese version works on my Saturn emulators as bin/cue file and I can’t patch it and downloading the pre-patched version gives me error, anyone can help me with this, plz?

Hey Joe, can I make an important suggestion, well maybe two.
A. I kind of spaced out for a second when you said the name of "Bulk Slash." That's on me... however for the REST of the coverage you NEVER mentioned the name of the game a second time? Try to use the name of a game once per paragraph it'll make it sound better. If you want a second hint, try to replace any time you say "The game" with the name of the game. Obviously you don't want to say the game's name a ton but if you say "The game" you usually can replace it with the title.
B. Minor comment, but please put chapters on your videos so people can skip around, you can even make it "Game 1" Or something else if you really feel like you have to hide the titles, but it's better to use the names. If I space out I have to guess when the section began. Or If I'm not interested in a video game, I have to guess where the next one is. I also don't know how long the current section is.
The first piece though is really important and I think it'll improve your scripts.
'Bulk Slash' and 'Stellar Assault SS' have been legitimate goldmine discoveries for me. The work and dedication those guys put into their translations is truly exceptional.

I have been thoroughly enjoying your channel for a few months now that I found it. Great content and love the segments. I must say the improvements you have made in your production truly shines as I see some of the older segments. I learned about fan translations from your channel and started going down the rabbit hole of which ones got a translation. Could you ever make a "How to video" on playing a translated game? I loved Shining Force 3 on the Saturn and was bummed the other 2 scenarios didn't come out. I found you could play a translated version of them, but I don't know how you can do it. I would also like to play Dragon Force 2 which also has a translation. That woudl be awesome to show as I've no idea how it works. Thanks and keep on making your videos. I must say I find myself watching all the way to the end for the little skit you put there EVERY time.
