I've been a full time self employed photog for several years. My advise for those looking to get into it, focus on a specialized niche, learn what the market wants and deliver more than that. It's really the recipe for general business success. Most photographers I meet think like artists which is fine but to be successful you need to think like a business person too.

Been working as a self employed photographer for 20 years. I've made between 28k-85k in my career. I live in San Diego. Every year its different...sometimes by up to 20%. You need to budget and plan. Some months I make $1500, some months I make $8k. If you have discipline, you can do it, but its feast or famine being self employed.

You shouldn’t calculate how much a photographer make By checking job openings. You should talk with pro photographers with different niches, and experience. That would be more interesting for everyone :) great video tho! Thanks for sharing.

Adam Gibbs is International Landscape Photographer of the Year.
He did a Q&A video on his channel recently. Q. How much do you earn? A. Not enough to live on....
Christian Fletcher is a former International Landscape Photographer of the Year. He has two galleries, seems to be living very comfortably.
It's more about business skills than photography skills.

After photo school, I assisted for a number of years, which is a great way to hone your photo skills + get to know abit about the business side too. Then I fell into a teaching job, teaching photography to 7-12th graders for 20+ years. Then fell into an adult ed job teaching a variety of photoshop & photography classes. And some summer school classes for elementary kids too. Also freelanced along the way shooting spot news & had a part time job at a weekly newspaper.

I feel that the reason these companies low ball the salaries is because they don't understand what a photographer does. I feel most of them think all we do is push a button and don't respect the knowledge that goes into being a great photographer. On top of that, too many hobby photographers are doing jobs for low pay which dilutes the salaries of pro-photographers. I feel that if you're a hobby photographer, and get asked to do a job, either do it for free or charge what a pro would charge.

    • @NicoleGlass

Your comment is spot on. Absolutely right. Might even make a video about this in the future. I get really fired up when I think back at all the comments companies have made to me about how I’m “too expensive”.

This is a problem all the creative/artistic jobs are struggling with. People seem to think as it is fun only, something that you love and so you should do it for free. (as they're giving you the opportunity to do what you love! A d because of that you should be grateful and not demanding any MONEY - you know - "you can have it in your portfolio!"). And I'm an artist (but ignore it - I've already learnt to play that one down if I want people to take me seriously;)), graphic designer/photographer but also know about tailors and craft artists. And it makes me sick when I think that as an educated and advanced person I have to compete with amateurs/hobbists just because most clients don't see any difference in technique/quality/composition, they just see it in money they have to pay for the job. I feel like there is no simple way to avoid those frustrations. Just finding a niche with the right type of customer and not lowering prices to sattisfy someone who won't apreciate it - is easy to say but there are different situations and building a customer's base is not easy... it all takes time and dedication to find a balance between staying true to yourself and graviting towards what is expected on the market. Saying that - good luck to is all in the brand new 2020! :D

As someone wrote finding & keeping customers is the toughest part, especially if sales is new to you. I had a photography business (retired) in the same general region as you (also did OOT assignments), I did 3 basic things, events, weddings, & portraits. I did my best to do the best work possible, priced myself well, and kept my equipment in top shape. If you don't know how to find clients don't EVER work for yourself. To help you you may (nothing is for free) your local chamber of commerce, do freelance editorial work, find a way to photograph local events (especially those that don't get a lot of media coverage) you might get lucky. Network at local business & photography industry gatherings as well as those in aligned industries such as caterers, hotels, & event planners.

Nicole, I think a photographer is better off working for themselves. I was a wedding photographer in the 80s and 9os and I mad around 32 to 38 dollars an hour back then working for myself. My fee was average for that time period for people working for themselves. I had job offers to work for wedding photography companies, but they only wanted to pay me 15 dollars an hour. Thanks for your usual great video.

In the microstock stock business you can make from a few hundreds a year to over $3 million (Yuri). Most of my buddies in the microstock business make from $30K to $70K a year. Really depends on how much you want to work and what type of stock images you specialize in such as holidays or food photography.

Granted I only have about 70 photos on there and they are all local images so I know I'm not going to get gains for awhile. The image was of some artillery canons at Manassas Battlefield. The image would be great for postcards. Whoever bought it is probably gonna make bank from the image.

We have a legislated minimum wage. I think it's around $23.00/hour.
Most of those ads didn't mention experience. Those must surely be entry level jobs.
I am doing the video and multimedia units in the second year of a TAFE course in Western Australia. Regular students have done a (one year) diploma and are studying for an advanced diploma. On graduation, they will have a broad range of photography skills (including some darkroom) and experience in publishing electronic and printed books and brochures. And, of course, video. They would be qualified for those jobs. Not cinematography though, that's a different course, but they will be able to do documentaries and interviews (see Film Courage), and probably including wedding videography.

I'm going to give people good advice here. 1) Get a degree in something you can make money in so your not reliant on photography. 2) Marry someone that has a great job, has access to resources, or is financial secure. I worked in commercial photography in the early 90's before the digital take over. People made some good money because we had to show up with a 4x5 and lights. WIth the transition to digital and then iPhone photography it's just not as hard as it used to be and the internet killed it just like music. I still love photography and do it all the time. I got into an IT job and these days photography is so much fun and I don't listen to an art director over my shoulder. Don't give up your dreams but have a solid plan B.

That San Diego job is not something worth applying for, IMO. San Diego is an expensive place to live, they want you to supply all your own very expensive gear, plus they expect you to wear two hats. That job sounds like a rip-off to me.

I took "editorial" photos of some of the star players in hopes to send them in for stock sales. Dreamstime has accepted an image but shutterstock rejected it because it "required press credentials". Well, It didn't require credentials so I am a bit stumped. I haven't done a lot of editorial stock work so would love to hear your thoughts about this. Sorry, I'm so far off topic to this video. Some of the best images that I have seen are from retired photographers or people that are retired who photograph artistically. The site in which I suggest to see these type of images is FredMiranda.com. The site has many types of photographers and when I go to see some of the landscape photography I find many high quality images more so in landscaping and others in Cityscapes. Just like any job, when it becomes a job and you feel pressured it can loose the luster of what photography offers. On the other hand when it is done out of joy and the experience of it from travelling, quality work comes out of it. I loved and still do the National geography photographers who create the image w/out too much editing.

With the downsizing of newspapers due to news gathering from the internet, I've made as little as $10 for a photo of an event with $5 for subsequent photos for the same event. That's for a half day's work. So a farm event, for example, $10 for a main photo and if three more are published of that same event, those next ones have been as little as $5 each. I'm not a newbie to this, I've been shooting news for a quarter century. Newspapers are under the gun. There have always been people who provide photos for free just to see their names in print, but this is a new challenging era. I shot weddings years ago, I might have to look at that again.
