When i put the CD on in 91 thought they may have jumped shark because it was so radically different. By the third track I was mad at myself for doubting them. By the time Love is Blindess finished I was convinced this album would be considered one of the greats of all time and people would still be listening to it in 50 years.
Saw them 5 times on this tour. 2 indoor and 3 outdoor. Unreal show.

Achtung Baby is a sublime album. It really is. U2's star was rising after Joshua Tree and it was vitally important that they didn't disappoint with the next album. With the music industry being where it was at in 1991 if U2 faltered it could well have been the end of them as a recognised act. But instead of playing it safe, they took it in a completely new direction which surprised everyone. And once we got beyond how different it was we realised it was a work of utter genius. It took them into truly rarified air - to a place that only the biggest of the big get to enjoy. U2 in the 90s ruled the world.
Funny enough, when they returned to playing it safe in 2000 for "All That You Can't Leave Behind" their popularity began to wane. Those 3 different albums from the 90s (Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Pop) are unquestionably their best work musically. Achtung Baby is one of the greatest albums of all time.

OK, here are a few interesting observations (mine): (1) In this video excerpt, we see a 31-year-old man seeming far more mature than that age might imply. But when we see the same man sing these songs at the Sphere at age 63, we may marvel at the still-vigorous delivery that he continues to give out. As a young man, he seemed older in some aspects. As an aging gentleman, he sometimes seems younger (not always, but in many moments, yes). He truly transcends time. Let's keep loving him (and in the process, finding ourselves) at concerts etc. in person while we have the chances! (2) (I've only been referring to Bono so far! Edge obviously gives us incredible guitar work here, unmatched anywhere by anyone). (3) Final point: Bringing out Elvis so eloquently is soul-stirring to the max! I doubt that anyone else in the world can do it as Bono can!!! His everlasting respect for Elvis is incredible to witness. (Yes, assisted by Edge plus Larry and Adam, I assume, to the point of perfection).

There was an important rehearsal for this filmed show the previous night but Adam Clayton was a near alcoholic at the time, went missing and never turned up.
This show is amazing. U2 were such a brave, innovative and great band back then.

The others were incredibly pissed at him and allegedly almost sacked him. But to Adam's credit, after this tour, he got sober, and the band continued.

Totally broken by the closing of that guitar solo. When he ramps up the tension and starts getting into those wailing high notes I can barely fight back the tears.

a magical performance for sure.......the guitar solo isn't really a solo...its like a painting of the center of a storm of poseidon fury....you can see the sleet......blowing sideways...in a haze almost fluorescent....and at 3:42....the stars are even blinking....this is nothing short of pure magic....the only kind....and when the edge played on.......he truly made the universe dance....a brilliant masterpiece.
