Every time a conversation steers toward 'What is your favorite band?' and I respond with 'U2' more often than not the response is 'U2 sucks' which drives me crazy. But it's performances like this that I witnessed back during the ZooTV and PopMart tours that cemented this band in my heart.
I'm afraid history won't remember how huge the zoo Tv tour was. Huge songs.. the band finding themselves lost in the live performances. Just brilliance. Younger kids please pay attention... it almost doesn't get better than any clip from zoo tv..
groundbreaking at the time,u2 put down the gauntlet for every other band out there...no-one could or would pick it up....fast foward 5yrs and u2 had to do bigger and better than zoo tv...ala popmart.....a truly exceptional band in terms of there music, there innovation, the emotion they potray thru there music, they are the last of rock stars.
Michael Kelly their 2017 Joshua Tee 30 tour can't compare with Zoo TV, this was groundbreaking in so many ways. U2 has never reached the heights of this tour again. I was talking to a couple who went to ZooTV, and then took their kids to JT30, and they said the kids have no reference point as to what they missed. If you weren't there in 92-93, you really missed out on one of the greatest shows in rock history (I made it to the Boston show on St.Patricks Day 1992, show just blew me away)
The benchmark for modern day tours/shows. People will always hate on U2 due to their opinions on Bono but this really was the greatest show on earth, the biggest, best most stimulating live show of them all. What a band, in their absolute prime here
Agreed. Aside from Queen and maybe Pink Floyd, there was never another live band as good as they were during their peak. As good as these videos are, they don’t do it justice. The only thing I would quibble with you is about why the public feels the way they do about the band. I definitely think a part of it is the politics. But not as much as people think. I think its as much (if not more) to do about public exhaustion of how long and consistently they’ve been around with zero breaks/ departures. I view the public exhaustion as the opposite dynamic of what happens when artists/politicians/musicians/actors die when they’re young. Kurt Cobain. Janis Joplin. Jimi Hendrix. Jim Morrison. James Dean. JFK. RFK.. They’re frozen in time at the top of their game. When they die young at their peak, their legend inevitably outgrows their reality.. James Dean was only ever in 3 movies JFK was reeling from scandal after scandal RFK might not even have been the Dem nominee when he was killed. Let alone POTUS. But nobody really remembers that now. The flipside of that is every human being in the world witnessed the 4 guys in U2 ascend to the highest possible peak of musical/cultural/artistic/performative relevance.. and the world has now witnessed those 4 guys in U2 descend from that musical/cultural/artistic/performative relevance. Had they died in a plane crash in 1994, no one would really care about their politics. So there’s no doubt in my mind they would be almost unanimously considered on a Mt Rushmore of musicians/cultural icons. Ok I’ll stop talking now. I did not enter this intending to talk to your ear off✌️
This was a landmark tour. Absolutely incredible. Bonos voice during this era was the best imo. Saw raw, so much power and intensity. Will never forget this.
Ultraviolet is my most favorite U2 song. I still feel like I won the music lottery being able to see Zoo Tv in 92. After seeing U2 some 13 times Zoo TV is still the best. Man I love these guys.
I've read interviews where Edge said this song was unwieldy to play live. I don't understand why. It sounds incredible and should be the centre piece of every show. To me this song IS Achtung Baby. It's stunning, absolutely stunning. U2 transcend genres, the are U2.
They said the same thing about "Who's gonna ride...". I suppose most of the album is difficult to play live, as it was very hard to make in the first place.
I’ve read that as well. Just like how they never played red Hill mining town live until their second Joshua tree tour in 2017, So Cruel off Achtung Baby is the biggest example that. They’ve never played that song live because they haven’t figured out how to yet. It’s going to be interesting in their Vegas residency to see how they construct that song to play it live before. It’s a top 10 U2 song for me of all time. I can’t wait to hear it. I think the reason why is because there’s so much layering and texturing that can be difficult to capture live without it sounding like a train wreck because unless the timing is perfect, the whole thing unravels quickly. As an aside, it was right around the time of that interview you’re talking about were they came out and said that when they’re writing their songs, they keep in mind that it’s important to structure them in a way to be able to play it in its album form *and* as a stripped down live form. Even going acoustic at certain times. I believe a lot of that is artistic. But I also think a lot of it is managing it because it can be unwieldy live..
I saw U2 live in 1992 at Earls Court, London. I bought a bootleg tape of the concert shortly after and played the live version of Ultraviolet over and over and over again. I could never tire of it.There's something about the desperation and defiance in the vocal which is equally both very moving and uplifting. The song shouldn't reach the heights it does in many ways. I mean, can a love song really have the word 'baby' in it 40 odd times?! And yet it soars, with the guitar pattern building as only U2 really know how to do, encompassing every emotion of falling in and out of love, pain, joy, confusion, emptiness. It's just one of the great love songs for me...
mud love I'm with U 100% about this song Ultraviolet. I was recently watching the U2 360 at the Rose Bowl concert on Blu-ray and came across their amazing performance of this song from Achtung Baby. I remember hearing it before, but somehow they elevated the song live just like U2 knows how. Making it truly special to me and I hope millions of others.
I only heard Ultraviolet at the end of January of this year. I had never heard it before. As a long time U2 lover and having said that U2 is my fav band of all time for many years, I was surprised to find this phenomenal song. I don't think it was an accident though. From above I'm sure. It comforted me greatly and still does. Why? Because my second son died from the terrible disease of Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy on January 30 of this year. I have played this song over and over again several times since. Why does it appeal to me so much? I'm not sure. If anyone is reading this, please tell me what it means to you. Maybe I'll get a glimpse into why it means so much to me. Thanks, Tim
I have listened/watched this Wowy version literally hundreds of times and Edge still raises the hairs on the back of my neck with this spine tingling solo everytime…
No other band in history can come close to their body of work in terms of song library hits. This is an awesome song and they haven’t played it live in years.
Bono's voice's quality is so good that it's painful. I wish I could have had the chance to witness a U2 concert in the 80ies/90ies and even from 2000 on. Best Band Ever. No cap.
I've watched this countless times and all I can think about is how live music simply can't get any better. This is truly the pinnacle; such a special time. Where the band (Bono in particular) takes it is just stunning. There are no adjectives that do this justice. U2, early 90s, Zoo TV. Amazing in every sense of the word.
The Zoo TV tour was U2 at their absolute best. Bono doesn't have the same vocal as he did back then but there are moments where he can still hit amazing notes. The part at the bridge for Ultraviolet is what made me amazed in Bono's voice. I've had both a love and disappointing relationship with U2, but they will always be the most influential band I have ever loved in my life. To me, they are the best band because no other band has moved me more times in my life than U2.
+Fox Hound i agrred friend but this band and this boys change my life,,u2,,of corse bono voice in zoo tv its best,,but u2 its u2,,love from portugal u2
I always felt he was working towards greatness as a performer in the early years. He was incredible but for me ZooTv was the Apex. He had control of how performed. He made it to the top of the mountain. I adore U2 in all their eras but THIS is the Apex. Stunning .
I was there, too, and so happy the TH-cam rabbit hole brought me here. It was my husband’s first time seeing them live, so memorable in more than one way for me.
For me, Zoo TV completely changed everything, with regards to what could be achieved at stadium sized gigs. It was high tec, high concept and the Album it was touring ( Achtung Baby) was on another level. This was a band in their absolute prime, they were untouchable during this period. I don't think gigs have changed so much over the years, regardless of who the band is.....we have, the audience have. Instead of enjoying the moment and losing yourself to the music and the experience of watching a live band, we all just stand there watching it through our phones, as we record it. Very sad, I miss the old days and the songs and gigs of my youth.
This was when U2 was its absolute peak of creativity. Achtung Baby is by far their best album and the Zoo TV tour the best of all of their tours. A masterpiece.
No band will ever surpass this tour .... every tour ever made will be compared against it and no matter how great that tour by that singer/band will be zoo tv will always be top ! WE LOVE YOU BONO AND U2 !
This is why ZOOtv rocked my world and changed live concerts forever. My first U2 concert was in 1993 8th of August and it still sends shivers down my spine each time i see any ZOOtv clip. U2 FOREVER
Wow..badasss version of both of these great songs...Bono's voice🔝(don't care he messed/fucked up the lyrics)😉Edge's guitarwork is amazing... Adam's bass...Larry's drumming...goosebumps all over!❤❤🎵🎶🎸🎸🥁
At their greatest, always loved them even through their ups and downs , still nothing comes close to this era they were something else- league's ahead of anything else.. bono at his best
+xInFiniTexGaMingx Don't worry there will be something else. What made Achtung Baby and ZooTV so groundbreaking was the convergence of a band coming to grips with their super-stardom, the 'new' Europe, and the christening of the 'information superhighway'... don't look back, look forward!
Hey you're 17 now aren't you? I'm 17 also and a huge fan since 4 years. This month i saw U2 for my first time in Berlin. So never give up. They're getting better and better 😍
I have been in love with this man for 7 years. I don’t think i could ever love any other man after him. He is in my mind and everything reminds me of him. He’s engraved in my soul and my heart. We saw U2 in Vegas at the Sphere. He was listening to my music on our way back home on the bus and he came across my U2 songs back in 2018. He would get told that he looks like Chris Cornell, Jim Morrison, Bunbury, and behind my eyes he is and forever will be my bono. I promised myself to never listen to U2 if another man comes my way… I will listen to U2 alone forever if it’s not with him. With or without you. ♾️🖤 “ Let’s get married!Let’s go to Vegas!” We went to Vegas and it was peace. May god let me marry the man I love.
I love Bono's angst as he yells into the phone and @ 4:10 when he acts like a televangelist receiving the spirit, shaking and movin about to receive a blessin'. Or how about at 2:10 when he sings like a demon/angel. These two songs represent mankind's ability in creation..
Loved those moments to. He's never sang as good as he did in the early 90s. 2010s live versions of Ultraviolet had glimpses of bono of old...but only glimpses.
I wish I could describe to U2 the emotions that their live ZooTV tour invokes - thank you for these wonderful memories and unforgettable music. The live versions and transitions they made between songs on the ZooTV and Zooropa tours will never be topped. Thanks U2 for changing my life!
I think that this performance, of these two songs, would be representative of humans ability at music, IMHO. Clearly Bono, well the band also, are at the peak of their creativity, ambition, and drive. Zootv should be rated as one of the best tours ever.
Yes, if I could travel in a Rock 'n' Roll Timemachine-Jukebox, then I would travel to this concert to this point in space and time. Achtung Baby definitely is part of the Iconography of my Youth. Bono is an Angel/ Demon, Sinner/ Saint.
see this u2 first time in my life,,lisbon portugal 15 may 1993,,a boy whith 14 years in a concert,,and still change my life, this zoo tv change my life,,love this boys,,u2 from portugal
Of all the great U2 live pieces, this IS THE BEST! Two great songs, perfect creative playing, and a level of energy unsurpassed. If every concert experienc e was like this, there'd be no war.
Amazing performance. When Bono screams at 0:30 his scream is perfectly in tune with the synthesizer sound in the background. That just shows how inventive and a fantastic singer he was back then.
U2 have been with me since I was a boy growing up-they've weathered all those years and have been a source of strength when I had none. If I could say thank you I would, but I know I'd be in a very long line of people. It's being there with them at the concerts that makes the difference, feeling the atmosphere, knowing everyone standing with you feel the emotions of the lyrics & chords and that at some point they've switched off to everything else & just ramped the volume up. Thank you boys.
Matt Wall Dude I know exactly what you're talking about, As i was contemplating jumping off a Bridge in Tijuana Mex. in 01' The Song Beautiful Day was Playing very Loud on a Red Jeep that was Passing By,, ,that Song reminded me that once Bono at an earlier Interview Explained that the Song was about A man that had lost Everything he had to live for but it was A Beautiful Day! that Night the Song at that Moment Saved My Life,, i was Able to cry for the first time in many Years....that Night i was able to leave all that i couldn't leave behind. I Cried like A baby, I was jumping into nothing at all,,, im Glad that I had that Album I remember getting home and playing that CD all night ,Bono & U2 thought me that One Night, that what I was Just Stuck in a painful Moment of my life and , that the Moment had passed .

These concerts, in mid to late August 1992, had a fantastic acoustic set - immense and unplugged. These songs in the last 1/3 of the show were larger than life, and delivered that way. They fookin' shook the Earth with that music. Aye, it was just U2 being U2.
My Favourite Song. Loved U2 Since i was Thirteen. Zooropa tour convinced me. My Brother came back from the concert and convinced me to like them. Ultra Violet 360 Tour Hampden Park Glasgow. This song was nothing less than FUCKING AMAZING!!!! Roll on Secc Hydro November this is the number i'll be looking forward too.
Paul Klemt I'm not sure... he's not that old. I'm not disagreeing or stirring up. My opinion is that it's a different version of the song... it's almost the intro into the yea we'll share the stars..... and don't get me wrong it's freaking amazing. But I also wish every time they play running to stand still it's the zoo tv version. I think it's planned out ahead of time and this is the version they play here and they change it up as they go... unfortunately most of us think it's incredible and wish they did it each show... the question is why don't they know we want it!!!!?hahha I don't know... I'm still cranky I've been to 11 shows and have never heard bad live. Maybe I'm jaded✌🏻️
I agree, I haven't heard this variation of the solo before and I've listened to and watched countless live versions of WOWU... Edge's genius is not in playing fast licks or using hard techniques-- his genius is in his tone and just the way he makes the guitar sing and cry... That was such a joy to listen to...
Absolute epic performance and artists at the peak of their creative genius. Grateful to have been alive and at such an impressionable age at the time of seeing this as my first Rock concert. Where does one go from there?!
Dear Sean, you are absolutely correct. The guys were at their peak and for sure Achtung,Baby will be one of most relevant albums ever released in the popular music's history
I am drunk, i am drinking a macallan 15 years with ice, i got a friend who hate me when i drink a macallan with ice, but who cares when i hear Bono sing from 4:05 till the end, my life makes sense, i was born to be alive to listen this version.... ( and others but those i will hide in my heart). Dudes, be happy, or at least, try it, noone could say that you tried to do, and noone can take you that. Thanks U2.
One word for this.....PERFECTION. This gig is likely my fave ever live performance, that i have ever heard from the band. I dont suppose that is really news to many people

This is why ZOOtv rocked my world and changed live concerts forever. My first U2 concert was in 1993 8th of August and it still sends shivers down my spine each time i see any ZOOtv clip.
U2 FOREVER
Here i'am, listening a show that's 30 years old... these songs never gets old. Timeless
Heard it many times for many years, still can't believe how good it is.
I would give up the 30 years I have lived so far just to experience a single Zoo tv concert.... amazing era for U2 💔
I'm 52, and I've literally been to hundreds of gigs, this was the best tour in history.
Seen this at Celtic Park 💚👌🏽
@@ThePled9e me too, both nights.
@@designforlife704 Still have an intact ticket for night two but went home on the bus 😳
Me too, have my stubs, one indoor two outdoor
Wow..badasss version of both of these great songs...Bono's voice🔝(don't care he messed/fucked up the lyrics)😉Edge's guitarwork is amazing... Adam's bass...Larry's drumming...goosebumps all over!❤❤🎵🎶🎸🎸🥁
At their greatest, always loved them even through their ups and downs , still nothing comes close to this era they were something else- league's ahead of anything else.. bono at his best
and before he started spewing liberal garbage mid show
Love that The Edge brought out the old Gibson Explorer for Ultraviolet. Beautiful guitar.
I'm 15 and i wish I could've been around to witness something like this!
+xInFiniTexGaMingx You still can. Their tour is going on :)
+xInFiniTexGaMingx PLENTY OF FOOTAGE...ENJOY :)
+xInFiniTexGaMingx my daugher is 12 and see u2 4 times
Hey you're 17 now aren't you? I'm 17 also and a huge fan since 4 years. This month i saw U2 for my first time in Berlin. So never give up. They're getting better and better 😍
Best performance of Ultraviolet & With or without you ever
“ Let’s get married!Let’s go to Vegas!”
We went to Vegas and it was peace.
I've been a U2 fan since day one, this song just keeps rising and rising to be my number one.
The "EDGE" my all time favorite guitarist and as far as I am concerned the best ever, regardless of rankings.
Favourite live performance by U2, ultraviolet is legit one of their best songs and I wish there were more ZooTV recordings of it
I wish I could describe to U2 the emotions that their live ZooTV tour invokes - thank you for these wonderful memories and unforgettable music. The live versions and transitions they made between songs on the ZooTV and Zooropa tours will never be topped. Thanks U2 for changing my life!
Best tour, best album, and add in a bit of TV and the rest you know
Music does not get better than this, period
I think that this performance, of these two songs, would be representative of humans ability at music, IMHO. Clearly Bono, well the band also, are at the peak of their creativity, ambition, and drive. Zootv should be rated as one of the best tours ever.
Absolutely. There was no slowing them down at this stage. And such a contrast to the back-to-basics 90s alternative rock movement
Virgil Nanaquawetung I'm my opinion it is .this show should what you could do if you took a chance.to go to a rock n roll show to watch tv.genius.
Yes, if I could travel in a Rock 'n' Roll Timemachine-Jukebox, then I would travel to this concert to this point in space and time. Achtung Baby definitely is part of the Iconography of my Youth. Bono is an Angel/ Demon, Sinner/ Saint.
Edge is an amazing singer too!!! Is there anything he can’t do when he is on a stage????
He has an absolutely beautiful voice...so under appreciated
see this u2 first time in my life,,lisbon portugal 15 may 1993,,a boy whith 14 years in a concert,,and still change my life, this zoo tv change my life,,love this boys,,u2 from portugal
I just love Edges guitar playing!
This zootv tour will never be eclipsed in my opinion.. The version of ultraviolet on 360 tour was just not the same..
MegaTrainspotter Very true. I liked having it as an alternative, though. The 360 version is more of a rock-centric version which is also pretty cool.
9:14 get ready for take off, 9:39 launched.
Right...
Chills...
I will never get tired of this. Their prime.
Of all the great U2 live pieces, this IS THE BEST! Two great songs, perfect creative playing, and a level of energy unsurpassed. If every concert experienc e was like this, there'd be no war.
one of the best solos from the edge ive ever heard!
Amazing performance. When Bono screams at 0:30 his scream is perfectly in tune with the synthesizer sound in the background. That just shows how inventive and a fantastic singer he was back then.
1:33-1:38 is it for me seeing The Edge just lost in the incredible rhythm. Absolute bliss.
BIGGEST BAND ON THE PLANET
U2 have been with me since I was a boy growing up-they've weathered all those years and have been a source of strength when I had none. If I could say thank you I would, but I know I'd be in a very long line of people. It's being there with them at the concerts that makes the difference, feeling the atmosphere, knowing everyone standing with you feel the emotions of the lyrics & chords and that at some point they've switched off to everything else & just ramped the volume up. Thank you boys.
Matt Wall
Dude I know exactly what you're talking about, As i was contemplating jumping off a Bridge in Tijuana Mex. in 01' The Song Beautiful Day was Playing very Loud on a Red Jeep that was Passing By,, ,that Song reminded me that once Bono at an earlier Interview Explained that the Song was about A man that had lost Everything he had to live for but it was A Beautiful Day! that Night the Song at that Moment Saved My Life,, i was Able to cry for the first time in many Years....that Night i was able to leave all that i couldn't leave behind.

My favorite 10min and 37sec on all of TH-cam.
This is why they re the greatest 1980 to 2017 at the top speaks for itself
Light 106 year boy is almost 40!
I have seen U2 live a dozen times. On a good night in the right venue pure magic. Watching legendary rock royalty.
Roll on Secc Hydro November this is the number i'll be looking forward too.
one of the best versions of ultra violet and with or without you and i just got back from sphere u2
09:39 - why does Edge not play like this nowadays? Luv it!
Good question :/
Joachim Draxler They need to play it like this for special occasions. Please U2. Do this!
Edge was just showing off this tour
saw him last October and he still sounds AWESOME
Simply outstanding
I would just cry in emotions to Go back And see this in 2021. Time machine please!!!!
let's get married...let's go to Vegas!!!
Inspired by that line I wanted to take my girlfriend to Vegas. Well, we finally broke up but I still love U2...
About to buy tickets for the sphere...
I love Edge’s guitar at 9:39 of WOWY and Larry’s driving drums that start at 6:55.
In the middle of ultraviollet I can feel something that, really, I can't name whatever the F*** is!!!
Talent...
mind the gap drugs?
It's your heart!
What a one -two punch of two songs together. Effing awesome!
These versions are perfection, incredible performance
Just come back to this after listening to the 2017 version. Dear Lord, this is in another world.
Unbelievable this is the 1st time I have heard this version....incredible it just takes me back❤❤❤
God that ending is beautiful. One heart, one love, one blood.
My favorite song of all times ultra violet. And that gorgeous crying i guitare in with or without you. I want more....
Yes, Sir, thank you for setting up the soundtrack of my life. No life could've ever been like mine because u2 was not there.
9.39 - 9.55 musical heaven in 16 seconds
I agree, I haven't heard this variation of the solo before and I've listened to and watched countless live versions of WOWU... Edge's genius is not in playing fast licks or using hard techniques-- his genius is in his tone and just the way he makes the guitar sing and cry... That was such a joy to listen to...
mike.choi absolutely, genius confirmed in the new songs ;-)
Couldn't agree more!!!!!
No, musical heaven ends not at 9:55, it ends at 10:14!
what a change in direction for U2 - and what an album it was! SPECTACULAR BAND!
How in the hell have I never seen this before. I saw them twice on this tour. The world's best band at the height of their powers
Amazing. Saw this show in Oakland 92
I prefer the Joshua Tree Songs performed on the Zoo TV tour better than on the Joshua Tree Tour.
Joseph Bruneel both albums (joshua tree and Zoo station ) are so differents that it is very difficult to compare tours.
Olivier Calmel Achtung baby* zoo station is the opening track
One of the best Ultraviolet' i've seen!! Goosebumps to remember how good they were. One of their best songs for sure
I could not express any better what you have just conveyed: where does one go from there?
What an impossible feat to follow. Congratulations on witnessing ZooTV - sadly I was a year or two late
Wow, what a different sound and feel from how these songs are played on the last few tours. Very powerful. Boy has Bono's voice changed. :-(
Hes 61 give man some respect he's still sings better then any1 of 2day could dream about!
Smoking definitely didn’t help
I am drunk, i am drinking a macallan 15 years with ice, i got a friend who hate me when i drink a macallan with ice, but who cares when i hear Bono sing from 4:05 till the end, my life makes sense, i was born to be alive to listen this version.... ( and others but those i will hide in my heart). Dudes, be happy, or at least, try it, noone could say that you tried to do, and noone can take you that.
Thanks U2.
Now i am going to listen Heartland.
First saw U2 in 1983, this is the pinnacle of their career
9:39 pure heaven
Greatest ever
we shine like stars...
Yes we do honey x
…in the summer night
Greatest album, greatest tour the band ever did. I wish I couldve been there !
Achtung / Zoo TV
One word for this.....PERFECTION. This gig is likely my fave ever live performance, that i have ever heard from the band. I dont suppose that is really news to many people
at 1:46 where he messes up the lyrics and acknowledges it is priceless!
Haha seen that then seen your response haha, thought I was unique
yup. that made me laugh
🎤🤭
It doesn't get better than this. It just doesn't.
Two of my favourites together!
Every time a conversation steers toward 'What is your favorite band?' and I respond with 'U2' more often than not the response is 'U2 sucks' which drives me crazy. But it's performances like this that I witnessed back during the ZooTV and PopMart tours that cemented this band in my heart.
Bono's voice sounds good
