My dad died suddenly of a heart attack just a few days ago. We were incredibly close and this was our song. Hearing it brings me both immense pain but also comfort. I’ll see you soon Dad, and we’ll share a Guinness in the sky.
Tough deal. I hope you find comfort in your fathers passing. I probably said that wrongly. First time I heard this song, I told my wife, that is our departure song.
May you have comfort in the loving memories of bygone days and cherished memories of your dad. This very song brings me to tears, just to reminsce and i feel like singing it out loud. One of the Bono's best that simply trnscends one from this state of being to nothingness, the oblivion. After all such powerful songs remind us how similar we all are at the very core of our existence.
I was singing this song with Bono that night and I’m sitting on my couch singing it with him now 19 years later. My almost 34 years of fandom sure has been a trip. I was 11 when I discovered these guys thanks to my social studies teacher. I’ll be 45 in April. These gents are literally the soundtrack to my life. I will love them to the very depths of my soul for all the rest of my days. Adam, Edge, Larry and of course, Bono...a million thank yous from me wouldn’t even scratch the surface. Thank you for seeing me through all the phases of my life. Love you guys ❤️
I was 19 when I first heard “Sunday Bloody Sunday” on the radio. Bought the album (yes album) “War” as soon as I found it on the shelf & been a fan ever since. (still have the album 😎👍) Saw them live in Detroit during the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 (when tickets were under $20)
@@greenmile9496 That’s so cool! Sunday Bloody Sunday was my introduction to U2 as well! My social studies teacher was teaching us about Northern Ireland and he played the song for us. I was 12. The teenager at the record store told me I had good taste in music, especially for a little kid. All my classmates were listening to New Kids on the Block and I was listening to U2. My mom kept telling me that U2 was a phase and I’d grow out of it. Lol I guess moms don’t know everything

I remember when I had watched this performance around the same time my own Father was dying. As I watched my Father laying on the sofa in his last days of fighting cancer, I watched Bono singing this...feeling this, knowing he was at the same place in my life with his own Father that I was at that moment. It was like a dam broke...and when he said "this song is about letting go of somebody that you don't want to let go of. it could be a lover, it could be a Father, could be a child, could be a friend." It was hard to let go, but at that time I was a brick wall. Strong. Tough. Until I let go...my ego flew as my Father confessed his sins, fears, and regrets. I was able to see him as a man, a man on a journey, and I was blessed and privileged as I told him "so long Dad, see you soon...and safe travels"
wow, what strong words my friend...it is incredible what a song can transmit to us or where it can take us...this song for me is without a doubt in the top 10...it is very very beautiful...congratulations on your words

Acredito eu que há músicas que não são para virar single, assim não perde a essência, essa música não é pra qualquer um, é algo pra ser sentido no fundo da alma, é algo inexplicável e transcendental.
The only singer i have ever heard to sing so genuine, feelings and lyrics that are no cliches or poses, just his heart given to us. A man who had the courage and shouted out his soul singing to God
I think it he wrote it about his late father. There are definitely themes here like growing up, showing controlled agression, being strong and yet show empathy and compassion. Such a well written piece. Quite possibly his finest. I love this album too. To me, it's like their 'white album' going back to their core values after the 90's electro era.
Im sitting here at 3 in the morning and listening to U2 over the years. Do many gems they have, that i forgot. All that you csnt leave behind is right up there eith Achtung Baby in terms of greatness.
One of my friends died suddenly of a non COVID issue during the pandemic very suddenly, this song was what I used to get through it. One of, if not my favorite u2 songs
For me, as a fan since the age of 14, KITE is perfection, the best song ever written and performed. I listened to kite, literally every single day since '05, when my parents died. Such an honest and healing song to me. God bless U2, stay safe and talk to each other ..
I was in exactly the same position after my father died. The lyrics read like a beautiful, every word, phrase is so meaningful. Quite possibly his best lyrics, then the bridge, with Edge's soaring slide guitar. Man, something else.
Its songs like these that gives you the idea of how great of a band is U2. A multimillion sales band with literal dozens of hits and many songs known by the whole world. Yet, some of their best are deep cuts. Songs that could be the best one in a whole band's career is a deep cut for U2. Kite, Gone, A Sort Of Homecoming, I Fall Down, Dirty Day, 40, Breathe, One Tree Hill, The Little Things That Give You Away...are a few examples of this.
I was 14, when I heard "Walk on" first in 2002, I got curious, then I heard "With or Without you" and I fell in love with these guys since then, now 21 years later, still in love with them.
I first heard this song live in Tampa, FL, back about a hundred years ago. Bono took his sunglasses off for once in his life, and he told the story that inspired this song. It was how his father was a great friend of David Howell Evans's father. Otherwise known as the Edge. And how they enjoyed walking together at the beach and look up at the sky as if thy were flying a kite.
I have a kite tattoo now, my dad is my best friend this is his favorite band of all time he has raised me to be a strong independent person and this song is everything he ever taught me and it’ll always have a special space in my heart ❤️
After seeing this on the Slane Castle DVD, I can't listen to it without getting misty-eyed. I posted it last year, when my 98-year-old Grandmother passed on what would have been my Dad's 70th BirthDay. Thanks Bono, and Bob Hewson.💝 A gorgeous song.
Listen to Bono’s voice between 2:38 and 3:21 - some of his finest live vocals ever with lyrics sang in such an honest and heartfelt way! Truly stunning in every way! #Kite #U2 🤘🏻
I’m just gonna leave this here. I’ve always been a U2 fan but “All that You Can’t Leave Behind” is without question, one of their greatest works, IMO. I toured the country with this album on repeat (in my van with a trailer) for months and couldn’t listen to anything else back in in the early 2000s, so it has a very nostalgic vibe for me. We each have albums that mean a lot to us. This is definitely a monumental record for me. I say this sitting here reading “Surrender-40 songs, One Story by Bono. Thanks for the inspiration. Not many of us get to live THAT life, but we would do it regardless. And we still do.
I’m not the biggest u2 fan but Bono’s voice is something unique. So expressive and powerful, full of details to delight the ears. And btw, Edge does a really amazing job here too, constantly switching from arpeggios to slider, changing mics and effects. Lots of layers with one instrument.
It takes me back to my younger days as well, except for that I was a young boy, when this concert took place. I didn't really know about U2's existence back then. However this song makes me feel nostalgic for that period of time. Those were innocent times. That's what I feel when I hear this song.
....they played "Gone" right after, it was epic - guitar kicking and all. But the Slane Castle rendition of "Kite" struck an emotional chord - Bono's father had just past away earlier that week... He cries while singing it.. And at the end, after the very last "big idea" verse he says - "talk to each other".

My father-in-law went ill several weeks before he passed away in October 2016, and this song kept lingering on in my head during that time. My emotion feels this song really represented him and his situation; he was such a loving, caring husband and father for his family and all people surrounding him. I saw he'd taken care of people including those who worked for him, and he went when he'd made sure everyone was safe and fine (he was an army commander when he was active) . Listening to this song tightens my throat and brings water to my eyes, but it brings memories how kind and loved he was. I went U2 concert in Saitama and it has been the best concert I have attended.
This songs makes me think of a conversation my late husband and I would be having if he could visit me from Heaven. He died from brain cancer a little more than a year ago. I know that this not goodbye.
I discovered U2 when I was 9 years old. My uncle bought the Joshua Tree cassette and he played it over and over. I loved the band immediately. I am 42 now. I love them even more now.

Not so much I couldn't taste it Life should be fragrant Rooftop to the basement The last of the rocks stars When hip-hop drove the big cars In the time when new media Was the big idea Was the big idea
What more can you say U2; most bands would do anything for a song as good as this one. It's beauty is off the scale. Thank you so much for your wonderful music.
To this day I still feel very strongly that the lads should have made this a single release. I know it’s a fan favourite but I think others deserved to hear it and appreciate this beautiful song!
I've always thought that Kite and Walk On may be the best back-to-back songs on any album! Tremendous songs live and also while listenting to All That You Can't Leave Behind!
From the "Boy" album, through to "songs of experience"and everything in-between.I can honestly say that "kite" is my favourite U2 song. This track takes me somewhere that is only accessible by listening to this seminal track. Thanks lads....
This is almost too powerful a performance. Bonos' voice is really firing on all cylinders. Edges solos are fierce! I'm going down to hear album version on my column speakers to soothe this. Love U2.
I remember hearing this song when I was 9 years old. I'm Brazilian and I didn't understand what it meant, but I thought the way the singer expressed himself was very beautiful. the band performed in Brazil, but for religious reasons they wouldn't let me watch. I'm glad this happened because it made me open my eyes and fight religious extremism.
Been a fan for as long as they've been around. I'm calling this their best live performance of any song. Lyrics, emotion, musicianship - it's the whole deal. Unbelievable.
This song means so much to me because the words have a very significant meaning. I used the song in a video I made about my trip to India. I fell deeply in love with someone and couldn't understand why I was so in love...I had to let go of her and my old life to drift off into the breeze "like a kite flying high in the wind." I had no idea where the kite would go, take me or ever come back to the ground again? This kite is ripped and badly damaged now but it's finally found it's true home deep in the heart from where it first came from..... it had one of the most amazing journeys and fairy tale endings on Earth. The kite showed me that I had just met myself but in another body. The silly thing is I've spent nearly three years trying to show off and be the best kite on Wollaton Park.......impressing this lover and I've really only been impressing myself!! I am so glad I love kites as a child and trust the natural pure summer breeze.......I love nature. It's blown me back into the arms of the woman I fell deeply in love with ❤❤ only energetically but soon physically💅😛👌🙏❤❤❤❤

I'm a man, not a child, a man who sees the shadow behind your eyes.
Ps: And I'm not afraid of it, because I have the light in my heart.
This one has the magic that touches me deeply.......❤
Masterpiece!
This is one of my favourite things on earth. It's perfect.
Edge is a great singer too and a fantastic guitar player. Bono is 62 now and still going strong.Sending Love and Light.
I Sincerely Love You Too!.........U2🎉🎉🎉
"A man who sees the shadow behind your eyes..." 😍😍😍😍

Rock n Roll U2 style !!!
Kite has everything; good lyrics, good voice, good music especially the guitar.
Great song
A todos que adoram e amam U2, são eternos pessoas do bem e de bom gosto musical!!!! Parabéns U2 !!!

Something
Is about to give
I can feel it coming
I think I know what it is
I'm not afraid to die
I'm not afraid to live
And when I'm flat on my back
I hope to feel like I did
'Cause hardness
It sets in
You need some protection
The thinner the skin
I want you to know
That you don't need me anymore
I want you to know
You don't need anyone or anything at all
Who's to say where the wind will take you
Who's to know what it is will break you
I don't know
Which way the wind will blow
Who's to know if the time has come around
I don't want to see you cry
I know that this is not goodbye
It's somewhere I can taste the salt of the sea
There's a kite blowing out of control on the breeze
I wonder what's gonna happen to you
You wonder what has happened to me
I'm a man
I'm not a child
I'm a man who sees
The shadow behind your eyes
Who's to say where the wind will take you
Who's to say what it is will break you
I don't know
Which way the wind will blow
Who's to know if your time has come around
Don't want to see you cry
I know that this is not goodbye
Did I waste it?
Not so much I couldn't taste it
Life should be fragrant
Rooftop to the basement
The last of the rocks stars
When hip-hop drove the big cars
In the time when new media
Was the big idea
Was the big idea
Heart melting guitar solo, very soulful, yet so simple. U2 really are the last of the rockstars.
What more can you say U2; most bands would do anything for a song as good as this one. It's beauty is off the scale. Thank you so much for your wonderful music.
To this day I still feel very strongly that the lads should have made this a single release. I know it’s a fan favourite but I think others deserved to hear it and appreciate this beautiful song!
still the best song here in 2024
Maybe their most underrated song. This and moment of surrender. Beautiful.
My mother died that year and this song got me through it. Great song.
Love U2.
Bono sings from his heart!
Bono understands pain...God will Bless him
I remember hearing this song when I was 9 years old. I'm Brazilian and I didn't understand what it meant, but I thought the way the singer expressed himself was very beautiful. the band performed in Brazil, but for religious reasons they wouldn't let me watch. I'm glad this happened because it made me open my eyes and fight religious extremism.
Were you in a religious cult?
Parabéns, se tornou livre!
Been a fan for as long as they've been around. I'm calling this their best live performance of any song. Lyrics, emotion, musicianship - it's the whole deal. Unbelievable.
This song means so much to me because the words have a very significant meaning. I used the song in a video I made about my trip to India.
I fell deeply in love with someone and couldn't understand why I was so in love...I had to let go of her and my old life to drift off into the breeze "like a kite flying high in the wind."
I had no idea where the kite would go, take me or ever come back to the ground again?
