I think the whole bosses attacking once they have their stance broken is a way to teach the player to not always just barrel into the boss to get the fatal, but to also still keep focus.
also, it ramps up difficulty, it gives a feeling of progression to the monsters : "oh, so you spent half the game making a mad dash to the staggered boss/elite mob to do a fatal attack ? Funny you should do that...see these new monsters ? They KNOW and react to that now :D"

I loved this game. You didn't bring it up but the side quests had really good endings IMO, especially antonia's (which you definitely didn't do if you thought she might have been the final boss). The way they reward records that give humanity which entices you to sit there and play them after the quest lets them give an emotional resolution thats really impactful, for me at least.

It would be great if they took inspiration for all 16 (or 66 if you can find the rest) books! I’d love to see how they’d tackle characters like Scraps, Jack Pumpkinhead, TicToc, or the Wogglebug!
Regarding the fake stagger, it's not actually fake but the boss throws a last attack before getting staggered so you just wait for the boss to do their attack then move in and get your critical hit.
Every time I see a YTber I follow play LoP, I get so excited. It's one of my fav games this year. It makes me so happy to even see people enjoying it for what it offers.
I really liked the heal re harge mechanic and the agression you can afford when you have heals left. I also loved the risk of having no helas left so much that i didn't ever choose to increase my pulse cells.
Having played and beaten Lies of P myself as a Dex build, blocking isn't too important in that case due to how little damage Dex weapons block, so it emphasizes that you get good at dodging and landing those charged heavies to build the stagger and get the critical. But having seen so many go for the unga bunga strength build makes me want to try it for myself to see how vastly different it is.
Regardless of damage reduction rate, I feel like people underestimate just how good blocking + guard regain is in this game just as an additional defensive option. As a Dex build, Dancer Handler + Bonesaw Blade actually block a decent amount since it's a heavy blade, and even with lighter weapons the damage is still going to guard regain, which can be recover fully if you play your card right. So long as you understand the situation, I think normal guard is a viable option worth considering. My strategy is usually to just block the first hit of a tricky attack when I'm not sure of the timing or after a charge heavy, then try to perfect block the rest of the combo or disengage and charge heavy again when with it's over.
True that. I made my way through the game up to nameless puppet before ever starting to parry or even block at all. And half of the journey to that point I was using an unupgraded rapier.
Nice to see another pick this up and enjoying it. I've enjoyed it greatly, sure it has its pain points but they are far between, while not officially confirmed the fact the devs has indicated both DLC and a sequel are perhaps in motion warms my puppet heart.
You made me so excited to play this for myself. I'm currently going through my backlog and finishing games I started, loved, and never finished, but I have my copy of Lies of P on the shelf, patiently waiting its turn.
13:32 I imagine actually 0-flask build is playable particularly by the absolute best players, considering p-organ upgrades provide buffs when pulse cell is discharged
I don't know if it's good, but it's definitely playable. I actually went with discharged/ recharge speed upgrades myself until I unlock respec in my first playthrough and had no major issues.
You are mistaken about the "fake stagger mechanic" . The red light indicator only appears AFTER the boss has done his last damage action . It is still a "gotcha" for leaning too hard onto habits, but as long as you learn this new mechanic on late game bosses, you can still deal the fatal blow.
The boss attacking while going into stagger position is there to teach you not to just blindly run into a boss. You're suppose to wait until the red circle appears to get into postion
You don't need to read this(obviously) I'm no expert on the field, but I don't think they'll "dethrone" Fromsoft, more like stand on the same level. I have finished lies of P(currently on my 3rd playtrough) and I really love it, but while the setting and a lot of other things in Lies of P I prefer over dark souls(which I just started), I can tell that they're so vastly different and like another person before me mentioned - dark souls has its own special atmosphere. You can't simply dethrone that is so unique and impactful and special for so many people... What I want to express is that I really really like lies of P and I'm looking forward to what more Neowiz has to offer, but I also don't want... I simply don't know how to express it, it's a peculiar feeling, of wanting for two amazing things, few amazing developers not being compared which is better, but instead both being appreciated the same amount... A foolish ideal that nobody asked for, but it's real.

For the others, I only saw the red indicator after the retaliation ended

I personally thought the fakeout staggers were great and never stopped being funny to me. The fact that she managed to be ready for the Eldest's fakeout on the first time shows that the game actually managed to teach the player to be wary when seeing a boss stagger for the first time in the late game.
The healing recharge mechanic is actually my favorite addition to the game. I thought it was absolutely brilliant. Also, once you get the P-Organ upgrade that makes it recharge over time too, it pretty much fixes the issues you mention. If anything, it had me doing the opposite and running away to wait for it to recharge on certain boss fights (here's looking at you Manus). I did also feel like Manus was kind of bullshit, and I too pulled the "run away screaming" strategy, and just learned to parry the gape-closing combo he uses when you're farther away, then hit him a couple times, then more running. But then again, I watched a buddy of mine play through the game just yesterday, and he managed to beat Manus just fighting him close up like any other boss, and got him within a few tries, so I think it's probably a playstyle thing.

Phogs is a Game about 2 dogs stuck together, they can stretch (like jake from adventure time), bark and do magic dog stuff, its like if the CatDog cartoon was a game but its just DogDog, the game is pretty wholesome and teaches the importance of showing love to your close ones because one day you might find yourself having to answer for your actions and god might not be so merciful, well with that being said You 2 should totally have a Phogs Date Night, pretty awesome game to play together (Video 20 of asking).
God I loved this video even do it kinda pooped on my favorite mechanic in this game which was the fake stagger, I can kinda see your points by it but as a person who has never played any souls like until this game I saw it as a way to pace myself and not blow thorough all the bosses and actually made me think instead of just rushing up to the boss every time I saw a bright glowing circle near the boss. Also her reaction to the end credits was amazing :D
Before I played any of From Software's games, I played a souls-like called Code Vein. It has a anime inspired art style and is developed by the same company that made the God Eater series. It's even set in the same universe. While I enjoyed it, it has quite a bit of fanservice with attractive men and women and that might be a turn off for some people.
Code Vein is definitely one of those games with the tag "Not For Everyone". But if you're ok with over the top anime cliches and fan service, it is pretty good soulslike. With interesting story, amazing music, tough bosses, unique mechanics and one of the best customizations for character creation ever.
One of my favorite ads to this game was the Lvl up notification when your Souls get blue and the fact enemies don't chase you when you're next to boss door. And I agree, those fake staggers are a pain, specially against Laxasia, I hated it.
I dunno, I can't agree with your criticisms on boss mechanics involving them taking space nor the fake fatals. Especially with mechanics like the Legion Arm and throwables that give ranged options saying that the bosses taking space is bad because you can't hit them seems shortsighted since you have the ability to do such in the game and if the boss was always up next to you would make these abilities/items near irrelevant and impossible to use, especially with stuff like the Falcon Eyes. Also, the bosses moving away from you gives YOU more time to heal/repair/rebuff. The fake fatals are just another way to keep you on your guard, get caught by one and now you SHOULD be watching for them every boss fight from then on. Sure you might fall for one again later but realistically you should be falling to it once per boss at maximum. Also not even a handful of bosses have this mechanic. Victor, Eldest of the Black Rabbit rematch, Laxasia, and somewhat Door Guardian are the only bosses that have this. Both of these seem to me to make the boss fights more varied and interesting.
A new game that just came out You 2 might enjoy playing together is “don’t die in the west” It’s a western TopDown sort of ranch Sim but I’d say it’s more of a cowboy sandbox a little but you 2 Should take a look at it and see what you think also Love your videos you two are a lot of fun to watch ^^
but the "visceral" indicator does not show up until they finish they staggered attack?.. I don't really see that criticism valid honestly. Aside for the black rabbit guy that one caught me offguard too
It's cool how Lies of P actually got a simultaneous Windows and Mac release. Setting aside 2D games such as Dead Cells, Hollow Knight and Salt And Sanctuary, I think Lies of P is the first big soulslike game for the Mac. :D
I haven't been as desperate as i am rn to play a game, this is like exactly the sort of vibe that i enjoy the most, like alice madness returns, bioshock series and this whole dark aesthetic and the wizard of Oz sneak peak ughhhh its so exciting 😭
I never had an issue with the boss regen, it’s slow enough that it doesn’t punish you for a brief break but encourages you to stay aggressive. The only boss that I had an issue with the staggered last strike was the 2nd brotherhood fight. When he drops, his fatal window appears immediately, then he interrupts it with a long combo then falls to the ground again. That one was the only one I thought was bullshit because it tricked you with the initial fatal window. The rest of the bosses window don’t appear until they are done attacking, which all you need to do is back up.
I am actually in love with the fake staggers. Makes me think more during the fight and when greed takes over whilst a fake stagger happens makes me realise my mistakes. But I am probably one of the few that likes the fake stagger haha.

It's also needlessly clunky, the curse of soulslikes. Lies of P is a bit smoother than Code Vein but still doesn't quite get it either
Code Vein is definitely one of those games with the tag "Not For Everyone". But if you're ok with over the top anime cliches and fan service, it is pretty good soulslike. With interesting story, amazing music, tough bosses, unique mechanics and one of the best customizations for character creation ever.
I love when she goes "eeeeeeeeee". Every video, every time. It's like a hype sound for me.
The fact that tarny has a box of porcelain dolls explains so much as to why she finds the most horrific things in souls games "cute"
One of my favorite ads to this game was the Lvl up notification when your Souls get blue and the fact enemies don't chase you when you're next to boss door. And I agree, those fake staggers are a pain, specially against Laxasia, I hated it.
Just finished this game today - now i can finally watch!
Those moments you need to step back are perfect for the gun arm
"ergos wetnurse" is a surprisingly accurate description
Funnily enough, she was onto something with the tiny wrench. My brother used a similar combination to two-shot King of Puppets
Can't believe i missed this one, good video
That makes me want to buy the game. ^_^
As ever, the reactions are so cute xD
If you need consumables. The vendor near the Malum district stargazer is your best friend.
too bad you guys wasn't able too get the long nose weapon
can't wait for the dlc for this myself, defintley looking forward to seeing her play it as well and ESPECIALLY the Dorothy sequel :)
but the "visceral" indicator does not show up until they finish they staggered attack?..
I used the wrench head on the police baton for a long time too. I called it The MJARIO.
My brain keeps auto correcting the game title to “Life of Pi”
10:44 *finally* found someone who made this meme
got to this boss and this exact scene from spongbob popped into my head
I haven't been as desperate as i am rn to play a game, this is like exactly the sort of vibe that i enjoy the most, like alice madness returns, bioshock series and this whole dark aesthetic and the wizard of Oz sneak peak ughhhh its so exciting 😭
"Consumables are overpowered"
Firebombs look around nervously.
First lie of the game the Bastard Style does not give the Bastard sword but a Rapier.
OMG IM SO SORRY I CANT WATCH THE VIDEO YET IM PLAYING THIS MYSELF RIGHT NOW ITS AWSOME SO FAR!!!
I'm literally on chapter 8 thought "I surely won't see any boss spoilers since I'm this far into the game."
I couldn't have been more wrong.
The student became the master. :)
She's a legit gamer, bro. You did good
I am actually in love with the fake staggers. Makes me think more during the fight and when greed takes over whilst a fake stagger happens makes me realise my mistakes. But I am probably one of the few that likes the fake stagger haha.
