When we came to China over 10 years ago, prices were low. Rent, food, entertainment, it was all very cheap. Now, prices have reached levels surpassing much of the USA. We make some comparisons, and explain why this is happening.

That is crazy...here in germany, even in the cities, it is about the same with 60squaremeters for over 1000,- $, but this is as extreme as it gets and that with a clean, working supply of water, etc.
Sure you can go more crazy as well, but usually even in cities, you get a tidy, well working flat for under that price...a little outside the city centers, you are going down to about 600-700 and in small towns it goes down to 400 cold. I am living in a small apartment for even 350 bucks Warm...so everything paid already(heating, water, garbage, etc)
Even a middleclass european guy wouldnt really accept to afford such high prices combined with such low living standards.

      It is called inflation

    • @mapesdhs597
      @mapesdhs597 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

David, you are correct, only Eastern Europe atm seems to care about maintaining its cultural integrity and stable borders. With regard to rising costs in China, the govt. aims for a minimum 7%/pa increase (it's been higher in some years), with job growth of 23M/pa just to maintain civil stability (preventing dissatisfaction amid the young is critical). Even at 7% though, ShanghaiGoat's quote of 3000rmb ten years ago would be about 6000 today, so it being 20K shows there has been a significant increase beyond mere inflation. Officially, the annual inflation rate has on average been much lower than this, supposedly less than 2.2%/pa over the past 10 years, but this doesn't match reality at all, showing how the system is distorted in various ways, via currency manipulation and other methods.
Some hold the false belief that China now has a market economy, or that it has adopted Capitalism (or elements of it). The only thing China has absorbed is a degree of free enterprise, but that is not Capitalism; the latter, at its core, is property rights, free speech, don't lie and don't steal (the foundations for honest and trustworthy trade, hence the connection to the Protestant work ethic and the strong early rise of the US); free enterprise is just the ability to exploit opportunity, it implies nothing about the morals and ethics of trade, hence why free enterprise can coexist so easily with scams & fraud. China does not have property rights, it certainly doesn't have free speech, and with cultural traits that sustain elements of corruption, deception, fraud and scams at numerous levels, it's far removed from honesty and truth in trade. How one can do business in China could certainly be described as free in various ways, but it's much more like the old wild west than a sustainable system based on trust.
Politically, China is a communist variant; economically, it's something else entirely (no word for it atm), but it definitely isn't Capitalist or a free market, notions which effectively died in the West with the creation of the Fed, the emergence of Welfare and the colossal rise of national debt (all of which are a form of theft and a violation of the non-aggression principle). Indeed, many elements of how Western economies are run today are if anything more communistic than the way China operates atm, with enormous state intervention and control, the money supply artificially sustained by state borrowing, etc.
One thing is certain, the Chimerica mutual dependency is in a very unhealthy state, a structure of trade on the back of cheap oil which allowed global economies to flourish for half a century. Much of it was artificial, on all sides, while traditions of saving and frugal behavior within civilian populations were erroded (Spend! Spend! Spend!). In the West today, few people understand what saving even means; most believe it refers to just the standard interest received on cash investments (which is horribly wrong of course, the interest doesn't even cover inflation, especially when base rates are so low). Private debt is particularly severe in places like the UK, (around $2.2 trillion for a population of 65m) but it's generally bad everywhere, while state debt means resources are stretched far beyond capacity (proving that importing hordes of migrants is a terrible idea, they disproportionately add to the burden on services and systems, along with so many other problems).
It's a curious thing that China hasn't succumbed to the diseases of political correctness and cultural marxism that have so infested the West, yet it has ended up with large debts via other routes, with potential for future problems of a different order. Trust is perhaps the biggest long term problem, people have to believe that the system can sustain; in the West, most people are too brainwashed to understand it can't (so they bumble along, deluding themselves into thinking they're going to have a cosey retirement pension when some simple math shows they've not and never will pay anywhere near enough into the system to cover the cost), but in China the dynamics of this have yet to play out.
      Ian.

I didn't do it.
Her reason was that all her friend's do it. She is comparing her wealth with her wealthier friends and relatives. I felt bad and finally gave in and purchase an affordable place. After I did it she then rant on how come I haven't got my 2nd property while at the same time comparing me to her wealthier relatives kids. After enduring such unkind words for a year I EXPLODE.
Not to mention she keeps ranting on how I stole money from her for the deposit. She didn't remember she force me to use her money. She knew what was going on when she had to sign stat decs and everything.

If you want to afford the life in Shenzhen, you have to be someone working in the biggest tech companies like Tencent or Huawei or Xiaomi etc. Or work in the financial sector of Shenzhen, which is also getting paid a lot.

I can think of so many other Asian countries to live n retire. I have alot of experience w China. Can't trust the people. U saw that stunt by the rich Chinese family in Sweden right? They were well off n still tried to cheat the hostel n then created a scene. These two have basically a China women fetish. Plus since they live there, they cant even come close to telling the true story or they would be jailed n then deported. so all the videos r 10% of the truth just out of self preservation. Finish watching the entire video I attached in the other post. Medical srevices r compromised too. My friend said if they know you can pay, get ready for alot of fake diagnoses. Winston and Cmilk give the presentation its okay to live there n here r some downsides to watch out LOL---its not even close. its overwhelmingly NOT OKAY. I am not even talking about the random violence, scam and govt oppression. I can safely say the govt doesnt care if I am an American...surely they won't care if you r South African. I know what you mean about how people can't make it without help. Even in the US if you happen to live in an inherited house, drive a used car, leave the house unlit (go traipsing around with a flashlight) and unheated except for the room you use at a particular time, have no spouse or crumb-snatchers (read: kids) to feed, hardly eat out at all (microwave meals) and drink only water, you still have to watch the money very closely or you'll find yourself in a bind. I'm in the South in the country and that's the cheapest place in the US to live price wise--how other people pay for half the stuff they have plus have others to support plus have bad habits to pay for like drinking or smoking--I don't see how anyone does it without help. It's not possible as far as I can see.

Shenzhen/Shanghai/Beijing/Guangzhou/HK prime locations = New York/LA/SF prime locations. For the same quality of finish and space, I'd bet the pricing is within 10-15%.
I would be interested to see 2nd/3rd tier Chinese cities ranked against 2nd/3rd tier US cities though.
    Hangzhou/Tianjin/Suzhou/Nanjing vs. Chicago/Houston/DC
    Qingdao/Chengdu/Shenyang/Jinan vs. Austin/Dallas/Atlanta/Boston
No question that prices for everything in China have been on a tear the last 2 decades though.

My branded electronics (TV, Computers, Phones) all cost as much if not more, my clothing costs the same price, my car was A LOT more. While rent is cheap (2,500 for a decent house), last year it was 2,000. I can honestly see this being 3,000 before the end of the decade. I import a lot of stuff such as cosmetics, eye care and shampoo. It's extremely expensive.
They are spot on in this video. If you live like a Chinese person you will find it cheap, if you want to live a western lifestyle it's more expensive. Australia small suburban house that was $250 k 15 yrs ago is now $1m+ , young people cannot get into the housing market it’s crazy esp in Australia where we have sooooo much land and soooo little population we need a bit of Chinese crazy building here to fill the market void , problem is it’s the Chinese investors buying up the Australian houses that is totally busted the system in Australia, something need to happen that’s for shore or the next generation will be renting for the rest of their lives and that’s fine when you are working age but when you retire paying rent and living will be harder.

Any Chinese investors read this contact me bring your bags of Chinese money and we can make a bomb.

The average is more like $700 for a smaller house or a decent apartment. I'm renting a couple rooms from a friend who owns a trailer while I save for a house -- the size of which is pretty comparable to a very small house. My portion of the rent is $300 (2000 rmb) and I make $70k+ per year. I can't imagine spending three times that much and only making $8k.

The same here in Norway aswell with the housing but not as bad as China, my dads house cost him 180,000Nok(Norwegian Kroner) and he made about 90Nok an hour as a constructionworker when he bought it 25years ago, It is now worth about 1,700,000-2,000,000Nok. In comparison I work at a store now making 157Nok, A constructionworker makes about 210Nok so salaries have just over doubled but cost of housing is tenfold. Atleast we get a lot better intrest rates now which helps, It went from 18% when my father bought his house to 2.2% now.

Don't forget that for every yuan of debt, that is a yuan in somebody's bank account. This is the biggest division between the rich and the middle class, especially in a place like China. The middle class is practically defined by their ability to pay the mortgages owed to wealthy elites.

Then one of the landlady's kids became homeless and she kicked me out to make room for them.

In reality, its more expensive to live anywhere in Asia if you live as a westerner. Very much you take for granted back home either is hard to get, restricted or expensive (or a combination of them all) in Asia. That’s just a fact. As a tourist you won’t notice it, but as soon as you want to settle down, your western lifestyle and mindset will catch up and start taking over your ideas, needs and decision-making, making it a lot more expensive than it cost for the locals and for many even be more expesive living in Asia then back home... most people don’t even realize it. A strange phenomenon among westerners in Asia.

Thats BS. I lived in Bangkok and I rented a luxury condo for 354$. With hardwood floors, nice kitchen, nice balcony. Swimming pool, fitness center, steam room and sauna etc. I lived on 1800$ a month their it would have been like living on 6000$ in a major us city. This was 2010-2013. Sure it wasn't in the city center but it was along mass transit lines and only a 20 min ride to the center.

At the time the video was made renting a nice and clean apartment in a good neighborhood, same size as Winston’s, in a 3rd tier city cost 2000-3000 RMB, which back in the day roughly was 300-450 USD plus quite cheap utilities. It might have changed now though.

I agree with cost of living in China my friend recently moved to China from india and he realised the things that he used to purchase are costing him more than he thought even the price that you are paying isn't getting you a quality stuff that concerns him.
    Electronics costs more
    Branded clothes cost more
    Foods cost more
Let's not talk about rent it's huge
But his real concern is the medicine and all the speculation revolving around it, he just can't trust it. So, I have to courier him some from India
I don't know at what point China gone that expensive but it's good if local people can afford it

Last local elections, high rents where the main topic, every party promised they will lower it, nothing happened after elections. But at least the wages are higher.

My first apartment here was 3200 a month. 2 floors, but very small. Had an actual shower instead of a shower head over the toilet so it was the best unit we could find. A year later my wifes parents bought us a unit. 3.4 million RMB. 180 Sq meters. 3 bed/ 2 bath. Very big home by chinese standards. In the past 5 years the price for this home had gone up to 4 to 4.2 million. (around $600,000). In my home town of Missouri that would buy a Mansion. Housing prices are insane here. Food prices arent too bad, but i do alot of home cooking with fresh ingredients.
