probably a concert seeing as the sanctuary isn't prepared for a service or mass. and it looks like most people are sitting in the back - the best spot to hear the full colour of a musical performance
The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. 35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. 36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light. 37 And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat. 38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner. 39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
It is estimated it costs $238,000 to get a 4 year degree at Saint Olaf's. Considering the payoff to those of us they will serve and bless, shouldn't we all contribute to their scholarship fund ? If a million of us would pledge $17.85 a year, it is doable. (edit) Michael Devine, conductor, must have studied conducting with angels.
This is a musical showpiece and is unsuitable for worship. The congregation has to focus on when to sing and when not to sing. In a worship service, the congregation's attention should be fully on worshiping God and giving Him praise.
napsuta so stuffy on the comment-imagine if Bach would have been told that people don't don't kow when to join and how confusing that was--get over it and see the beauty in worship and song
And, of course, you're the only one who "gets" it. How about offering an argument that uses informed opinion rather than just calling those you disagree with "stuffy" and telling them they "don't get it" and to "get over it". Do you even have anything intelligent to say? And, oh, on that thing about Bach: 'First, they reproved Bach "for having hitherto made many curious variationes in the chorale, and mingled many strange tones in it, and for the fact that the Congregation has been confused by it." ' - Christoph Wolff, Johann Sebastian Bach: The Learned Musician (Norton, NY, 2000), page 85. No one's arguing that Bach's music is not beautiful or inventive but music for performance by professionals prepared carefully with much rehearsal is worlds apart from music sung by a church congregation to worship the Creator-Redeemer. If you wish to derive pleasure from the rapturous beauty of music, go to a concert or put on a CD. Worship, on the other hand, is meant to please God and to draw the worshipers to God through participatory singing.
LTKing2013 William. I think the concern being expressed can be seen with reference to two activities that take place in the build up to Christmas. We have 'Christmas carol concerts' and 'Christmas carol services.' The former is highly organised with the best possible musicians, The latter has some planning to it but the stress is on the message of Christmas and the musicianship is not the prime consideration. What we have in this video is Christian in content but is used in a ceremonial context, At a ceremonial occasion where the content is Christian, non church goers are more like to attend for the function itself and possibly the music, then an occasion like a church service where the purpose is to worship God..
Best I have heard. Congratulations!!
By far this is the best rendition of Crown Him with Many Crowns I have heard. I think the organ has a lot to do with it.
It's a Holtkamp organ. I must say the sound really touches me. Combined with a great choir and great organists.
Wow! What an awesome performance!
This is an amazing rendition of a wonderful arrangement .Oh and I love the organ part especially. Good work Michael and Joshua :)
i realize Im kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good website to stream new tv shows online ?

@Khari Ezekiel Thank you, signed up and it seems to work :) Appreciate it!
@Ephraim Zachariah happy to help :D
Beautiful
Beautiful!
Beautiful in every respect but where are the congregants? Why are the front pews so empty?

Can I ask where you got the timpani part? I'm only seeing brass quartet parts for purchase!
Was the ending a little off? Sounded like an uneven high note was added.
Yes that high note is not in the score. I don’t think it adds anything of value having heard it without.
