  • Part of what I wanted to do with PlainSpoken is help to tell the stories of average people, clergy and laity, reckoning with the realities of the fallout in The United Methodist Church. John is a career clergy, most recently serving in the Mountain Sky Conference. He has severed his relationship with the UMC and is now GMC clergy. This conversation is sort of an exit interview. We do not bash the UMC, but we do talk about some of the structural realities. John even has kind acknowledgments for his former bishop and many of his colleagues in ministry. This conversation will not help people entrench on either side. It just shows how messy and unfortunate all of this is. Please be in prayer for John, and for all of the other conservative clergy who are in difficult positions to lead with conviction while acknowledging the cost that comes from such leadership.

Great interview. Any church will be blessed with John as a shepherd.

John, you're in the Upper Midwest with Dakotas, Iowa, Minneapolis, Nebraska, and Northern Missouri. I think Wyoming might be with us too. Contact Val Reinhiller in Williston.

Blessings for future discernment on following God’s path in ministry. Thank you for your past service to our Lord and His church brother.

I enjoyed the interview! I think when John is ready to be back in the pulpit, he’ll have a number of congregations wanting him to preach.

St Paul's seminary in Kansas has an "extension" program in Oklahoma which is "housed" on the campus of OCU.

The conference expecting/requiring traditional pastors to help a same sex couple find someone/someplace to do their service is the Minnesota AC (from which my church and I just disaffiliated).

Oh, I'm enjoying my sabbatical at the moment. I will likely do another part time appointment where I teach at the church and continue in my role as a residential appraiser. With my physical issues, I am ready to be somewhere warm.

John, how about planting a couple of GM churches?

I was thinking John should move to Texas for some pastoring opportunities, but then he said he owns land and likes big game hunting. And it's probably a little hot in the summers and not cold enough!

I want to bring my handguns and shotgun out to visit John and do some shooting!
