    Great video. What type of nails or what size nail is used for the ridge cap? Thanks.

    My roofer said they can use 3 tab shingles to make the ridge, since I will be using 30 year shingles I don’t feel comfortable using 3 tab shingles for my ridge, he mentioned that the ridge cap shingles are expensive and that it takes up a lot of bundles, that’s the reason he suggested using the 3 tab shingles for ridge, is this true?

    • @RoofRepairSpecialist
      @RoofRepairSpecialist  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They are more expensive then 3tab, but I still recommend using them, you’ll probably spend a few hundred dollars but will have a roof that looks better and lasts longer

    Don’t you have to peel off any of the tar strip plastic covers?

    • @RoofRepairSpecialist
      @RoofRepairSpecialist  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, no need to peel anything off.

    Please show how to use a ridge shingle as a rake "wrap" (in place of a drip edge)

  • @tinastepanian
    @tinastepanian 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If there is no wall to connect to, does the hip and ridge have a different installation in the middle part of the strip where the product gets installed more flat in the middle?

  • @stevetate5071

    Dont forget to use longer nails on ridge vents so you still have 1/2" penetration into the plywood/osb below.

    • @RoofRepairSpecialist
      @RoofRepairSpecialist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. Should've mentioned that.

      What size would work best??

    • @AdaptiveRoofing
      @AdaptiveRoofing ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fredlowko6874 1 3/4" is good for practically every type of shingle and shingle-over ridge vent combination. However, you have to be careful if you're combining a high-profile ridge cap with a ridge vent and a designer shingle like CT Presidential. For premium shingle installations, our supplier has 2-1/2" hot-dipped galvanized coil nails that we use, just to make sure we're fully penetrating the plywood sheathing. Going too short on your ridge cap nails can have drastic consequences so no messing around!

    What do you do with the last cap? How do you finish it off?

    • @RoofRepairSpecialist
      @RoofRepairSpecialist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a good question, I probably should make a video demonstrating that. Depending on the case, if it is just a long ridge we usually work from both sides ang get to the middle, Then we seal the nails with mastic and put a secondary cap on top and seal the 4 exposed nails with adhesive.
      If the ridge runs into the roof field similar to this one we just install the ridge all the way and install a shingle on top of it.
      Hope that makes sense. But it'll definitely be on my future video list.

    For Owens Corning ProEdge ridge cap, the manufacturer instructions show the nailing pattern is 1/4” past the tar strip on the exposed side. Every installation video I’ve seen has people nailing on the other side of the tar strip. Which would you recommend?

    • @RoofRepairSpecialist
      @RoofRepairSpecialist  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would default to following manufacturers instructions. In the instructions it says to cover exposed fastener with roof cement.

    What are the specs for the fasteners that you use to attach the hip shingles?
    Head diameter?
    Shank diameter/gauge?
    Smooth or ringed?
    Coating (galvanized or not)?
    Length?
    Thanks.

    • @RoofRepairSpecialist
      @RoofRepairSpecialist  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is getting pretty detailed. It's a regular smooth shank roofing nail. I believe it is electro dipped galvanized. And length is 2-1/2"
