Hobie is both anarchist and a punk, and the traits you mentioned of anarchists is likely more applicable to punks, given they are all about counterculture. Ironically, punks and anarchists often are quite caring or collectivist because they recognize the need for human connection and co-operation. They just reject the top-down hierarchical structures of typical governments and corporations.

I think you nailed it, and that's what makes Hobie such a joy to watch because they got that aspect right. We see him looking out for Pav, Gwen, and Miles like a big brother, giving Gwen a space to crash when she's homeless and encouraging Miles to trust himself and giving him the tools to escape the spider society and Miguel's control. He's got the younger kids backs.

There's a very very specific reason for that too...Which the next film will showcase without question. You have to know the comics to know the plot twist coming for him. His actions and even his lines about not believing in heroes or consistency and he doesn't want to reveal his identity in his intro is golden foreshadowing. Hobie's biggest act of rebellion isn't against Miguel, but against himself. He says he doesn't care, and acts like he doesn't have a plan, but he does. He helps Miles escape. He had the portal maker already built when Gwen needed it. He knew exactly how this would all fall out, and had planned ahead to do it. He was playing a longer, better game of chess against Miguel completely unnoticed by everyone. He was ahead in every move because he doesn't believe that every Spider Man needs to have the "Canon Events" and is out to prove Miguel is wrong for doing this.

Part of the point of Hobie's character is that even when he takes off his mask, he's not really showing his secret identity. The happy-go-lucky Hobie that relaxes around Spider Society is still a mask that he's wearing, one that makes it impossible for Miguel to take him seriously or see him as a threat.
We only see his true secret identity through his subtler actions - letting Miles know how to bust out of energy cages, stealing components for his own use, and then using them to forge a new bracelet for Gwen to set her free after Miguel traps her in her own universe.

And with Miles his first question is are you alright, do you have a stable family. It may look like he's having a go, but I think he is willing to open up the offer to Miles too.
It reminds me of all the grass root Anarchists I know, they are always organising meet ups, building links to people with useful skill and making sure those people meet up with people that need those skills. If Society is not going to support people, it's up to us to support each other.
Also Hobie is taking stuff because he is reverse engineering the Societies Tech without the built in surveillance. The watch he gives Gwen at the end isn't one of Miguel's, it's one he's built from the ground up.

In the exchange with Miles, every word had double or triple meanings. He got a memory chip, power source, and screen from the doodads despite Miles' interference. However the writers and artists had an authentic and genuine take on what “punk” actually means, a little bit of the history, and it’s significance as a movement. Then on top of it, they made Hobie the one hijacking the narrative and refusing Miguel’s algorithm. He’s everything in this movie! And he cares for Gwen while she’s truly struggling at home.

I was a little sad you didn't talk about how Hobie plays into the stereotype of a dumb punk to hide things he does, like taking parts to build the device he made Gwen or giving Miles advice to question authority. If Hobie let on how smart he actually is, Miguel probably wouldn't have let him on the team at all given Hobie's anarchist leanings. Having the intelligence to pretend to be dumb and the maturity to roll with the assumptions people make about him is a really interesting aspect of his character and I was interested to see what your thoughts were on that.
Edit: In front of Miguel, Hobie lounges around, doesn't talk business, and is very clearly playing into the stereotype of punk = just some random teenager. With Miles, he's a wise, confident, loyal friend. He's using the facade of someone who's not taking things seriously in front of Miguel and being his actual self in front of Miles. I never said Hobie was dumb; commenters in replies who think that, please save your fanfic of what I said for your personal therapist. However, when everyone Turns against Miles, he gives Gwen a device that will enable her to help Miles in the next film. So in the way, Hobie echoes Miles’ words to Miguel: “ everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go… nah, I’m going to do my own thing ( and I want think is the best way to secure a win for everyone)”.
Plus, I think Hobie also helped Miles because as the only two black men within the spider society, part of him was thinking “ we brothers got stick together, ya know “.

Love the analysis. I personally believe that yes he believes in the individual but he encompasses Indivualism through Collectivism while Miguel believes in Collectivism because of his fear of aloneness. There's a lot we could learn from Hobie in this regard. He's ideally the right person to lead the spiders but doesn't cause he can't be the one in control of the indiviuals, he'd be of the mindset do it yourself, yet at the same time he'll help as he sees fit. Personally, I think he's the best character to come out of this film

There's so much exposition and foreshadowing by Spider-Punk/Hobie Brown, we didn't even notice it.
-Identified Miles from Earth 1610 (spider was from Earth 42).
-Tells Miles to use his whole hand, not just his fingertips to zap forcefields.
-Tells Miles to, "Make your own watch.", then makes one with stolen tech and leaves it with Gwen's dad.
-Warning Miles the Spider-Society may not be the good guys, "Just don’t enlist 'til you know what war you’re fighting.".
Much like a magic act (as someone commented), he distracts us with his anarchy while subtly dropping vital story elements.

As someone who is very into counterculture and grew up very much in the vein of a lot of people who are inherently questioning and defiant, I think a large part of that is once you realize where the grey areas are (and to an extent further realize everything is on a spectrum) you become an agent of change for the better, not necessarily an agent of change for the opposition of the norm. Especially when the system doesn’t work for you.

It was so refreshing to see an anarchist realistically depicted.
At first Hobie seems all talk. He seems like a self-parody who's just spouting non-conformist one-liners and is more than glad to lampshade his own hypocrisy. His aesthetic is awesome, but it seems hollow.
Now, a sentence that subtly tells a lot about Hobie is when he retorts to Miles "I was this cool the whole time." Hobie doesn't do masks in the symbolic sense. His dialogue is dripping with candor, he is every bit the man he claims to be, and there's no point to differentiate between Spider-Punk and Hobie Brown; they are in every sense possible completely one and the same; no pretenses, no courage in anonymity, no skewed self-image.
And then comes the latter half of his screen time, where he finds refuge in his blatant honesty. He doesn't even hide any of his intentions. He literally suggests DIY-ing a watch rather than kowtow to Miguel WHILE he's scavenging parts to do just that. Everyone writes him off as quirky, to the point of even pretending he's not there. And veiled in that wilfull ignorance he can do what he wants.
Anarchist's have gotten a BAD rap through the 20th century. Capitalists, communists, and fascists alike have discredited their school of thought, to the point that anarchy has almost become synonymous to 'violent chaos'. In truth, anarchy is a philosophy of personal responsibility and equality, but since it runs counter to the established order, it must be fought in whatever way they can.
And Hobie runs counter to that smear campaign; he's a paragon of anarchism.
He subverts Spider-society rather than violently thrash against it. He cultivates a power-base that is antithetical to Miguel's (who's a self-mythologizing, narcissistic autocrat). Miguel projects power, status, and lets the Spider-peeps feel safe in conformity. It's a lot easier to follow horrible orders when you belief them to be in service of a greater good (exhibit A: Nazi Germany).
Meanwhile Hobie is this easy-going fella. He's never openly antagonistic to individuals, freely shares his wisdom, cares deeply for his friends, and seems always ready to make more.
He may be the single best depiction of a bona fide punk I've ever seen in any media. Punks are always shown to be these angry teens hating on the way things are; they're depicted as misguided kids with a rebellious streak. Hobie's not like that at all. He's clearly a kind, easy-going soul who fights fascism with the power of friendship.

Hobie is actually such a brilliant character because I think a lot of his behavior is 'superficial' anarchy, the stereotype, (IE 1. saying Miles doesn't take orders, 2. ripping stuff off to 'cause chaos', etc.), but it's ACTUALLY masking his genuine revolutionary anarchy at the same time, and it's SO layered and clever-- 1. saying 'he doesn't take orders' is preemptively conditioning Miles to question the things he's told in Spider Society, 2. the stuff he's stealing is SPECIFICALLY to make his own time-travel watch, which he's doing RIGHT NOW because he knows that shit is about to go down with Miles being brought to SSHQ-- AAAGH it's SO good, he's an incredibly smart character both in-universe and in writing terms, just. Nnnf. So good. Love this motherfucker. So many layers to every action in every scene he's in.

    • @ZetaNiGHT
      @ZetaNiGHT ปีที่แล้ว +3

more cool Hobie shit bc I feel like gushing
      - the 'make your own watch' comment subtly signposting EXACTLY what he's doing in stealing Miquel's shit, but also presenting the idea to Miles that 'the road you see to the thing you want might not be the only road'
      - the symbolism of Miguel throwing away the empanada Miles brings him and Hobie grabbing it out of the trash-- Miles is the empanada, something Miguel thinks he doesn't need, but that Hobie can still see the value in
      - Hobie blocking Miles' path with his legs, but allowing himself to be easily knocked out of the way-- showing his hopes of keeping Miles from joining up with them, but also allowing Miles to freely express his own autonomy
      - the overall way Hobie interacts with Miles-- the way he presents his perspective to him, he encourages Miles to question things, to look at things in a different way, but he doesn't force it, doesn't discourage Miles for thinking the way he does. All of this makes it so clear to me that Hobie has his back nearly from the word go, and that he always planned to quit when the time was right, and the seeds for revolution were sown.
Such a good fuckin character. So many layers to every scene and every shot that amount to around 5-10 minutes of total screentime hahah.

My man Hobie! I was looking forward to this one 😅
I think one of the reasons he resonates so much is that they subverted tropes by introducing him as a "love rival" for Miles to be jealous of and then undermined every assumption. He's also the first "punk" character I've seen in mainstream pop culture who is portrayed positively and follows the punk ethos in action, not just words.
He's not the jerkface love rival competing with Miles for Gwen, he's the cool friend who looked after her when she was homeless and is now watching Miles back and trying to gently but insistently warn him about the Spider Society. He's on Team Miles from the moment they meet. Stealing stuff to make Gwen a watch that Miguel can't monitor or control. Teaching Miles to use his shock hands to their full power knowing he might need them to escape. In the 'intervention' scene, when all the other spiders are in a big circle staring in at Miles and judging him, Hobie is the only one facing away.
    Dude is a true punk.

I feel like the video is kind of missing Hobie's role in the story. He's a conscious catalyst to the spiders rebelling against Miguel and the established spider canon from his first moment in the movie.
-He spoke for Miles to try and keep him away from Miguel, because he knew about Miles' role in the anomalies and what the spider people would do to him.
-He's not taking all that stuff from HQ just to cause chaos. He's taking stuff to build dimension travelling watches that aren't tracked by the rest of the spiders.

It's important to note that caring for others is a key part of anarchist theory and practice, and that we see the dichotomy between collectivism and individualism as a false one. We believe that in order for everyone to have the most autonomy and freedom to develop themselves, it is also necessary for everyone to have their needs met and be supported by a community. We also believe in a unification of means and ends, which is why mutual aid is such an important part of working towards liberation, because caring for others and helping to meet needs that would otherwise be exploited instead empowers them to be more autonomous. This is in addition to the way anarchists aim to organize mutual aid networks in order to build the institutions that we want to replace capitalism and the state with.

The metaphor for capitalism is a line I almost centered a video around for Hobie. I think it's very easy to shrug that line off and I think it's actually 100% literal.
I think it's fear of the unknown just like editors were scared to show Peter growing old and having a kid in the main Marvel universe, scared to give Gwen agency in her own story, scared to have a black Spider-Man. I love that we got all of these things in this movie but I think the point of Miguel is to be a force similar to the editors who kept Gwen dead for all those years or the fans who hated on Donald for Spider-Man. Capitalism doesn't like risk's, Marvel is a hedge fund taking stock in characters and that hole is something they have to overcome even though it's as big and scary as what capitalism can drive us to do in a hive mind when we want a safe bet. Unfortunately life is full of leaps of faith. We learned it in the last one for a reason, just like we learned it in Gwen's comics on that same bridge.
I'd vote it for the single least understood line of the movie.
Since it's the biggest threat and the most like an actual incursion event (something bigger than a missed "cannon event" this would be something that either smashes planets together like oh idk a giant portal putting two worlds extremely close together, or multiple cannon events all being missed and cascading together, similar to what they explained in the TVA in loki, these would be similar to incursion events and something that big is literally worse than anything Miguel's experienced. It justifies Miles not going home, sacrificing the individual for the collective. Just like it would be reasonable for those editors to say it would cheapen death for Gwen to come back to life in the comics all those years. Very good symbolism imo, definitely a good metaphor for capitalism ye?

There is also the thing that Hobie being Anti-fa while Miguel is very facist. Hobie was checking things out, seeing where everyone stands, and once he sees where the pieces are, he makes the right little moves (stealing pieces to make his own watch, showing Miles the palm trick, sharing thoughts with Miles and Gwen who are both highly impresonable age), he tips the can and leaves as Miguel's little totalitarian eutopia topples to the ground.
Hobie knows Miguel has a point, at the same time though he also knows Miguel is doing the right things wrong. Stuff isn't as absolute b/w as Miguel makes it out to be. Hobie takes his time to figure what is right or wrong in a case by case and chooses instead of blanket a "canon" and "non-canon" where things always have to be this way.

Hobie is a good and somewhat refreshing take on anarchism and counter culture. A lot of anarchism is based on individual consent to act in a system and being allowed to leave that system when it loses that priority for the individual. He was always thinking ahead and had contingencies for when he eventually quit. He hated the structure of the Spider Society and stayed until Miles was made the bad guy for challenging the structure and it was clear Miguel was acting selfishly within that system. I wouldn't be surprised if he was there just to meet the "anomaly" that embodies his whole mission statement of doing what's right for the individual and not necessarily the group. From minute one he was telling Miles about how shitty the pomp and structure to the society was. Him taking random tech from around the base was both to piss people off and to make that portal watch for Gwen for when she defected. And yeah he's cold sometimes and is definitely a bit full of himself and his ideas, but in the end of the day he's true to himself and who he cares about. It's like he said, Hobie Brown was cool the whole time

You have to remember that even though miles went and hobie didn’t agree, he goes with them to let them have their agency but is still there for them for when it hits the fan.
And he was stealing parts to build the watch he gives to Gwen’s dad

Just a heads up that political anarchy and the more common way the word anarchy is used to mean "no rules" _aren't_ the same thing. Using the words "actual anarchy" to mean "no rules" when talking about an anarchist character (or person) is kind of like going on a tangent about being sad/"depressed" in a convo about clinical depression.
Political anarchy isn't "remove all rules from society and home cus rules bad", it's "remove unjust hierarchies".

It's implied, during Miguel explaining the captain cannon event, that Hobie either is the one who killed the captain or let him die in his universe. Mostly because of his raction "What of it?" and that he wears blue shoelaces, which in Punk lace code means that you've killed a cop. And if you're wearing blue laces it often mean that you're proud of what you've done too.

Your jacket rocks. Hopefully this feeds the algorithm, your content is amazing. Hobie “let’s do this one more time” was everything I wanted from his introduction.

You wouldn't think that multiple versions of the same superhero would be this good, yet both this movie and its predecessor have proven to have some of the best casts of any superhero movie I've seen 😊

To be fair there's Two versions in play. Spider (Pure Hero) and Prowler (Anti-Hero). "He's not the only one", 'You're just like me", "Anyone can wear the mask".

6:02 I think hobie wasnt sad that miles followed orders, but simply knew what was gonna happen next.
Miles finding out hes dad is gonna die and not being able to save him on time

Hobbie is meant to be overlooked. He is such a deep character yet you can't really tell what he is doing on your first watch. You overlook soooo many of his layers on the first watching. The dude literally distracts you with shallowness while actually being super deep.
It takes many viewingd to put everything about his five minutes on screen together.
I have a friend who watched it the first time and didnt notice the stealing things aspect.
Then he rewatchef and noticed them.
Then he watched it again and realized that he was stealing things to make a watch.
One of the best well e ritten characters ive seen in media.

"You want to be able to find the path that suits you in order to live your best life" This would be a profound statement, if it wasn't so vapid. The reason why? Who has time to find their own path when they're constantly being bombed? Or starving to death even though they work 20 hours? Or dying from a treatable disease because their home is simply just too poor? It's easy to say these things kinds of things when you are blind to the suffering in reality. Hobie and others like him think this way because of this. Authority can be pretty comforting, but at what cost?
