I wrote the words to this song on a card in 1973 to a girl who I met at work.. I was 20 and she was 19. I told her that I was going to marry her, and that scared the crap out of her… This year, we’ll be celebrating our 47th anniversary…. Love You Dear.
You are a one in a million couple. I should have done the same with a girl I met when I was 16. I did not. I thought I was not good enough. Only to find out years later after we both messed up our lives that she was waiting just for me to do exactly something like that. I am 66 now. One waisted life to go into the big book.
Dennis and I were friends living on the same block in Chicago, I went to grade school with him for eight years and then I moved away after my mother passed away when I was 14. Once I stopped by his house in 1972 to have a beer and just catch up on his life. The next thing that happen was Dennis singing a new song that he just wrote for his wife. I was one of the first to hear LADY. To this day we are still friends after all.
Yah my dad got the opportunity to see them practice in a studio session near Franklin park when he was working back in the 90s. I believe that was the time they got back together briefly.
Amazing , I had a drummer best friend in middle School. We were both KISS & Styx fans. He went on to be a successful studio drummer , N'Sync , Pat benetar , and others. I've always felt like I'm only 2 degrees from Kevin Bacon.😁
Lucky guy! Dennis is one of the those guys that truly personifies the essence of "love songs" and the fact that he has remained married and faithful is a testament to his incredible gifts that almighty God has given him! Been a fan since the late 70's! I hope you get to hang out with him again. :)
Dennis De Young and his wife Suzanne comprise one of the greatest love stories in Show Biz. They were high school sweethearts who married in 1970. De Young wrote two songs for Suzanne that became big hits... this song and "Babe" in 1979. The latter was never meant to be put out to the public, but he wrote it and had his band mates perform it with him for Suzanne's birthday. Record execs heard it and strongly urged Styx to put it on their upcoming album, correctly anticipating that it would be a big hit. The two, well into their 70s, are still married today, after 53 years together.
Not only have Dennis and Suzanne been married for 53 years…but they wed in January, in CHICAGO. If that's not love, what is? (Them Chicago winters are harsh. But they were too in love to wait for the summer. Either that, or Dennis wanted to make sure he got that draft deferment lined up in case the Army wanted to send him to Viet Nam. But I prefer the romantic version.)
@@davidreese9984 "Best Thing" from the debut album certainly is. But I believe OP said he wrote two songs about Suzanne that became big hits, not that Dennis only wrote two songs about her, period. ("Lorelei" could be about her, too.)
My very first concert was STYX. I was 13 and my mom wouldn’t let me go so I snuck out the window to go see them. It was sooo worth it. I saw them in 1980. I cried when I heard LADY. Happy Anniversary ❤❤🎉🎉
My first concert was Styx also but it was in January of 1978 (Grand Illusion tour) and I was almost 13. My sister took me cuz I loved both bands at that show. The opening band was Legs Diamond.
My first concert, as well. Also 1980 and Paradise Theater - It opened my eyes to what a band was actually supposed to be. People always ragged on these guys because they weren't "rock" enough, but if you have to classify to criticize, give it up!
I saw them in 2011 or so with REO Speedwagon. They both took the stage and played Speedwagon's "Golden Country" as an encore and just tore the whole venue down.
You must explore the Styx rabbit hole. In addition to the great suggestions like Sail Away, Lorelei, Show Me the Way. There is a real difference in the vocal tone of fellow band mate Tommy Shaw who has some great songs like Renegade, Crystal Ball, Fooling Yourself, and Blue Collar Man.
I hate the live version, I was all hyped and the second I realized it was a live take I lost all interest. I'll never understand why anyone would want to hear a live version of a world famous studio song first. If I'm going to react to a song I want to hear the version that made it famous to being with.
I've never written on your pod cast before, but I'm 72 years old. When you listen to these voices famous in the 70's and get surprised, I get a smile in my heart because I'm not the only one! Thanks for doing these. It is one of the things I look forward to.
Same im ,67. My lady left us years ago..I hear this My memories are me smile ...she was definitely the better of us. Being from Chicago..Styx and The Band Chicago. Mean the world to me. As does Reo Speedwagon.
There are so many incredible Styx songs. Just saw them in concert and they are still going strong after 51 years! Crystal Ball is one of my favorite songs.
All I can say is watching you react to the amazing talent of these incredible singers makes me realize why these musicians get all the beautiful women. Us mortal men don't stand a chance...haha. Love your channel.
I absolutely love Suite Madam Blue . It was my uncles favorite song. We lost him in 2020 to Covid. He was the one that gave me my first Styx album, Grand Illusion .
I absolutely love it when younger folks get to see how talented the great rockers really where! Styx is such a transitional band, each album different from the last.
Me, too! It was so fun to see all the new Queen fans after the movie and their discovery of Freddy Mercury. Same with Elvis Presley, David Bowie, Prince, Tom Petty. Unfortunately, it oftentimes happens after the death of the musician.
Agreed. Styx was one of my favorites back in the day. Despite all of their great songs, it seemed that they were somehow dismissed as not worthy of serious consideration.
In these days there were no in ear monitors or direct into the board sound. All amps, all loud and it could never be loud enough.... and then you have 3 vocalist trying to harmonize with enough power to cut through the loudness. It is just amazing.
Younger people really have no idea how loud concerts used to be. I'm 66, and I miss those days. $5 ticket prices, and 5 or 6 major tours coming through town every month
@@stephanierosen7737Styx today does NOT sound the same to a trained ear. They’ve never sounded quite right without Dennis and they never will. Like Journey, without their original lead singer, they’re just a glorified cover band. At least on the songs Dennis sang lead on. Tommy still sounds great and that thing he did with that youth orchestra was epic!
And Dennis is still married to the same woman he wrote this song for all those years ago.. He's very personable...I've met him a couple times and he was warm, funny and very down to Earth. I'd be willing to bet if you reached out to him you would get a response. He's very active on Facebook.
Happy Anniversary Kirk and Elizabeth. Great song choice for you to choose for your anniversary Kirk. Styx keyboard player Dennis DeYoung wrote this song about his wife Suzanne, who was his high school sweetheart.
This is a live version. You must listen to the studio version to totally capture the beauty of this song! Styx is definitely one of my favorite bands and I so miss when Dennis DeYoung was the lead singer. They do still have an excellent singer as Dennis had to fade away due to health issues.. Still love them as a band that shaped the 80s!!
Love Styx. From the first time I heard Come Sail Away I was hooked. Still listen to them. Check out Tommy Shaw's Fooling Yourself with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra. Amazing, so well done. You will be glad you did.
I'm going to see them for the first time next month in Saint Augustine, Florida. Todd Sucherman is the most talented drummer, I can't wait to see him live...along with the rest of the band.
Everything Dennis DeYoung does is exquisite. ;) Having been a musician in that era and locale, I knew the members well. And was blessed to have Dennis sing at my wedding. I knew that you'd appreciate Dennis' vocal talents. There's no one like him.
Dennis wrote this for his wife, but through his lyrics and music, he in turn wrote a song for all us guys who truly fell in love with our "lady's". This was my wife and I's wedding dance. Which , oddly enough, was our first dance at an after football game dance our freshman year of high school. That was 50 years ago, and she's still "My Lady".
I grew up on Styx and other bands of the 70’s. One thing I love about your videos is your unrepentant joy at hearing these songs for the first time. Takes me back 50 years ago to my first time hearing them! Keep up the great work! And happy anniversary!
@@rayl9335 In the case of Elizabeth I don't think the reactions are fake. She has explained in the past that she grew up in a household which primarily listened to classical and religious music, plus a little country music. Then she went to a couple of conservatories where she intensively studied opera before going on the international opera circuit.
Glad you finally checked these guys out. They were the hottest band on the planet in 1978-1979. I just saw them live with the rest of the gray haired rockers and I was stunned with how good their vocals still were. Dennis DeYoung is long gone from the band, but Tommy Shaw was still crushing his high notes at the age of 69, and they have one of the best drummers in the world in Todd Sucherman. Such a great catalog of songs and a great performance!
Todd and Steve Smith are great friends and have some collaborative fun on various Drum Shows. Todd's dad was a Dr. in Chicago and he played at night in jazz bands. Young Todd started lessons at about 2 to 3 years old.
I've seen them 40 plus times and never miss a shot at seeing them, and they have the most steady line up over the last 20 years and it shows. DeYoung took them down a road that lead to no where. Tommy Shaw is still kicking it as he approaches 70 and JY is steady as a rock. Rock critics be damned. They were and are great.
You said "DeYoung took them down the road to nowhere". Are you high? Sticks played around the world and sold out concert venues throughout the late 1970s into 1983. Being stoned and ignoring facts is no way to go through life.
@@falcngnzx2 Agreed!!! I I have gone to concerts for 45 years and in HIGH School mid 70s it was Dennis's band! He formed the band and it was his voice. I refuse to see the assholes that kicked him out when it was HIS band! Dennis is great without them and I would go again. I don't need to hear babyface egos songs! The icing on the cake is they hated Roboto when it is Iconic now, and they can't do it! It was even in Austin Powers!
Great choice and anniversary gift Kirk. From the preview, Elizabeth was truly moved. Happy Anniversary! Looking forward to this one and really enjoyed Yes this morning. You are dipping back into my favorites and formative era 60s and 70s. I saw Styx on the Grand Illusion tour and the Pieces of Eight tour. Incredible. It was with their main lineup and incredible. The last songs on the Equinox album, Prelude/Suite Madame Blue would be perfect to dive into next time Styx comes around in the rotation.
agreed... Styx was one of my favorite bands back in the day. Have to say 'Lady' is pretty low on my list of faves. I liked the Little River Band song a lot better.
steve walsh, Dennis and brad delp seem to go under the radar...and I'm going back to a time where you needed an amazing voice to get into a band. those days are depressingly well done and gone forever.
This was one of the songs that got me started with Styx. The range of the music, the clarity of the singing and the skill they have when playing their instruments was, and still is phenomenal.
My older cousins grew up with members of Styx way back in day in the burbs of Chicago. They aren't the same without Dennis but the only thing constant about change is change itself. Simply one of the best voices ever. Glad you have been introduced to it. So much brilliance to be found. The real scary thing is, he sounds just as stunning today at the age of 76!!
Happy Anniversary! My wife and I made our honeymoon allow time for us to see the Styx 1996 Return to Paradise Theater concert. Dennis DeYoung is not just an unbelievable singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and concert MC, he is a genuinely good human. When my wife and I were raising money for our local mental health association that served my late brother, Dennis sent us a ton of signed stuff for an auction. We took our autistic daughter to see him when she was three years old. She stims on Mr. Roboto and Show Me The Way repeatedly. Dennis was the reason I played keyboards in a rock band for the first time, because I could play The Best of Times on piano and the synthesizer parts to Suite Madame Blue. You are entering the rabbit hole of some unbelievable music. Happy Anniversary!
That show was amazing! It was actually my introduction to sticks when I was in high school, other than people randomly singing come sail away because of South Park.
I saw them on this tour as well. This was right after John's death (drummer). It was an amazing show. I've seen Styx 8 times live - that one was my favorite.
One of the best voices in the business! Along with Steve Walsh of Kansas, Rik Emmett of Triumph, Burton Cummings of the Guess Who and Klaus Meine of Scorpions. Basically, the forgotten song that put Styx on the map and their map is huge. Yes the released version is better. Not many bands have 3 lead singers. About time you did Styx one of my fav of all time.
Styx is a band where the vocals are absolutely at the forefront. The perfect band for you to take a deep dive into. You will LOVE them! Their vocal harmonies when they sang live blew away the competition, especially because they have 3 lead singers and songwriters. I recommend "Paradise", "Show Me The Way", "Best of Times", "Suite Madame Blue" and "Ballerina" with Dennis playing "Clair de Lune" as an intro....stunning. All Dennis songs. You will be very impressed with Tommy Shaw's voice too. Happy Anniversary!
Okay, I don't wish to be a pedant, but I think the word you're looking for is "complement" because the rest of the band sure as hell has not complimented DDY for a quarter of a century.
Styx has an extremely broad field of talent and styles. It is literally a band you cannot nail down. You can hear 3 different Styx songs and never know they were the same bands.
Styx also had several very headstrong personalities, which is why they are so musically diverse (and why the touring version of Styx does not contain Dennis DeYoung).
I've been a huge Styx fans since the 70s, but never realized he was this good a piano player. The Dennis DeYoung I knew was a master of the Synthesizer.
Happy anniversary Kirkabeth!! You are both truly blessed to have such wonderful partners , may all the years be pure happiness for you two(and Mycroft)
How could this possibly be your first time listening to Styx? You must have just arrived here on this planet, possibly from heaven because you are an angel (Happy Anniversary)
One of my VERY favorite songs to sing. I must have sung this a thousand times while driving down the road in my car. Was I any good? Doesn't matter: I was by myself! Happy Anniversary to you and the luckiest man on earth. Don't let him forget that is who he is. 😄
I never comment on anything but STYX was one of my favorite bands "when I wore a younger man's clothes". I say this with all sincerity, you absolutely, positively, and with out fail have to review "Come sail away". The transitions alone will blow your mind. FYI, I love your expertise in describing all the techniques that most of us never appreciate. It never fails to add a whole new layer to the music and it makes revisiting these songs a renewed joy to listen to again.
We were blessed with MANY legendary vocalists in the late 70s/early 80s. Styx, Boston, Journey, Pat Benatar, Scorpions, Chicago, Rush, Loverboy, Heart . . . and the list goes on.
This was early 70s There where great bands formed in all of the 70s Styx is JUST 1 of them Boston was mid 70s Heart mid 70s please give all of the 70s some over do credit as well Eagles 71 on and on
Always baffles me that learned and classically trained musicians have knowledge of music as far back as BACH, Beethoven and Brahms, yet are so surprised when hearing something so recently written and recorded. Kudos to your husband for sharing this with you young lady. Hoping it was a memorable anniversary for the 2 of you.
It’s wonderful to see and hear a ‘classically trained’ singer appreciating so many genres of music and vocal styles. Good music, and music that speaks to one’s heart and soul, is priceless and essential to the human experience.
Dennis DeYoung is one of my all time favorite male vocalists, ever. Please enjoy more Styx and his solo music as well. Desert Moon is a fantastic song.
You are so expressive and adorable with your reactions - so endearing, I really enjoy listening your in-depth analysis of each song, instrument work and vocals. Lady is one of those early "power ballads" - something that would become more popular in the late 70s and into the 80s. I love the change in tempo - starting slow then launching into full rock.
The piano entrance to this version is excellent, but you really need to hear Lady in its original studio album version. I saw Styx and Foreigner live in 2006. Both bands were incredible and their voices were still on peak performance shape. It was an incredible experience!!!
Dennis DeYoung hasn't sung with Styx since 1999. That (also )terrific voice you heard with STYX in 2006 was Canadian Lawrence Gowan. He's been with STYX ever since Dennis' departure.
not only is the audio of these older live versions usually inferior, but the slightly off-key harmonies when they come in is a big part of why I dislike a lot of live versions, especially older recordings like this
I believe it's Tommy's vocal in the higher register (JY is generally lower) which changes the dynamics of the chorus. It's quite different than JC's original vocals. Not bad, just different. Definitely check out the album version. Also, I believe Dennis is, at least originally, self-taught on the piano. He has definitely gotten really good!
I've loved this song since I was a little girl. I always dreamed/hoped my future husband would think of me this way. I'm 56 now and never married; still chasing this feeling. Happy anniversary, Lizzy & Kirk!!! 💖
@@Wishpool , My pleasure. Our stories are very similar, so I commiserate with you, and since I'm a few years older, I understand very well. Go for the gold, and best wishes when you do find it.
Suite Madame Blue is their opus. Come Sail Away is medicinal for the soul. You can't keep your eyes open while listening to it. It is otherworldly and beyond the present moment.
@@Mr1Tanker ‘Too Much Time On My Hands’ great song Tommy is superb. The only song I ever covered by them was ‘Miss America’, but always wanted to do ‘Too Much Time…’
Signature Elizabeth gesture (when you can tell she’s really being moved emotionally): that way she tucks her chin down and to the side (@ 8:45)and lets out a girlish giggle. “The Charismatic Reactor”. Always a joy watching these. Happy anniversary to you both.
I love that Kirk knows you enough to understand that you would absolutely be in love with the piano at the top of this. Styx is fantastic, and Dennis DeYoung still tours occasionally. He loves every part of the performance aspect of music, so you're going to like him a lot.
Bear in mind that those who study classical music have 900 years worth to become familiar with. From Gregorian chant, the origins of opera, development of now familiar instruments, Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romance, Modern. Perhaps 100,000 individual works. It's easy to miss what most of us have only heard on the radio in a few decades.
So, you're the one who owns that TH-cam handle... haha. I have the same qualifications to have said named handle as well. But, leatherneck camaraderie notwithstanding... I agree, I mean, classicly trained or not - classics and iconic songs exist spanning all manner of mediums (terrestrial radio, satellite radio, pre- and post-Napster/Limewire, and all of the streaming services to date). How she can't have not randomly happened across this (or other legendary bands) is beyond me.
Happy Anniversary to E&K! How clever of Kirk to use the full power of TCV to put his song request for his sweetheart to the top of the list :) Back in the 70's, we had to call the radio station's Request Line on a rotary telephone, and ask the DJ to dedicate a song to our special someone. Which we often did, then went back by the AM radio to listen for it, knowing our high school crush would probably hear it, too, and we would make eyes across the cafeteria the next day!
One thing that Styx and Scorpions have in common are 2 great different songs called Lorelei. You really need to hear both. But DDY has always been one of those singers you have sung all their songs over the decades and actually helped develop a persons vocals. Check out Castle Walls, Come Sail Away, The Grand Illusion, Desert Moon, Babe, The Best Of Times, Don't Let It End. Such amazing songs, what an incredible vocalist.
This song is one of my all-time favorites. When it first came out I was a very young man dating my first true love and I dedicated this song to her. Unfortunately, we ended up going our separate ways as we both moved on for college and separate lives as happens. Every time I hear this song though it still reminds me of her even 50 years later and brings a smile to my face. Also congratulations on your anniversary.
Couldn't stand that song back in the 70's because it got so much airplay and it was around the time my parents got divorced but as an adult I can appreciate how well written this song is. Dennis Deyoung's voice is phenomenal! Love the review.
Styx is one talent packed band. Dennis De Young's voice is unmistakable. Guitarist Tommy Shaw also shared lead vocal duties on plenty of songs. Although he sang many of the bangers, he could do the ballads as well. Crystal Ball is a classic.
@@calseeor With headphones, of course! Forgot to mention that. . . When I bought my "walkman" portable cassette player back in the early 80's, one of the first tapes I played on it was Styx. When "Lady" came on, it blew me away!
12:00 the full essence of Styx captured! There’s Dennis and there’s Tommy and the band. Solo Dennis is amazing, Full band with Dennis is incredible. Transitioning from one to the other? Well ‘wonky’ is a pretty polite way to capture this exact moment that epitomizes Styx’s legendary decades long saga. This is really 2 different versions of the same song the way they perform it, which makes sense because manny say Styx was really two different bands stitched together. 😊 Thanks for this!
Being from Chicago, Styx was always a favorite. Even into his late 60's and early 70's Dennis DeYoung's voice was still incredible. Got to see him several times in the mid 2010's. Sounded just like he did in the 1970's. His ability to hold notes perfectly on pitch was amazing.
Styx has been a musical force for over 50 years,Elizabeth! No matter which vinyl you spin, you're going to hear amazing perfect progressions, a few surprises, and melodies that will flatten your brain! Welcome to their world... And Happy Anniversary!!!⁷
Even as a nine year old in 1972 I was a huge STYX loyalist. Even then when my musicality was in its infancy I knew I was hearing exquisite talent! Have been a fan for 50 years!
1972, Racine, Wisconsin, a high school gym. I heard Styx as they broke through. We had no idea. The next few days the local STL stations started playing this 24x7. 05:26 is the start of this legend. Most rock singers in the 1970s had the high range singing. Dennis is a truly talented singer, pianist, writer and showman.
@@dw4245 Let's put this in perspective, I was 12 or 13 or 14. I know it was a small venue compared to STL Keil or the Checkerdome. It seems like it was a school gym. They had just formed recently and released Lady. It might have been '73 after Styx II.
I played lead guitar in BLUE COLLAR MEN, a tribute to Styx, from 2008 to 2020. During that period I met and mingled with Styx, and had already played SO MANY of their songs so often that I'll never forget their material!! I really enjoyed playing LADY and worked hard to keep up my guitar playing while singing, a pretty tall order! Dennis DeYoung is one great singer/songwriter (and the band ARE ALL fine vocalists) and I'm honored to call him a friend. I can hear lady in my head right now!

Paul I so loved that band as they are part of the tapestry on my youth. The first song I learned to play on the organ was Come Sail Away. I could always sing it better than I could play it. While both Dennis and Tommy sing in upper registers I always found it easier to mimic Dennis. He’s such a talent, so it is Tommy. I so wish they could have gotten over their differences.

Elizabeth. You are such a beautiful person as I watched you admire the opening lyrics such as you did. Your facial expressions are as telling as your lovely heart. At that moment, the song and lyrics were only matched by your Eternal Beauty and Resounding Love. Dennis DeYoung is still a symbol. A timeless vocal personality. Forever a rock superstar/favorite singer. This so reminded me of "Desert Moon".
The album version is magical in it's own right as it makes a more gradual transition from the piano to the full band. You're able to sort of hear each instrument coming in, and appreciate the musicianship of the band much more. It's fantastic.
It's so cool to see these bands live to get the visual reference I was missing from music that I know so well. And it's great to see through your eyes (ears?) because I've heard them so much I take so much for granted. Seeing it live especially I can appreciate the skill and effort it took. Thanks again!
One of the more 'unsung' songs by Styx, and a personal favorite, is 'Boat on the River'. Tommy Shaw sings lead, with Dennis DeYoung on harmony. There are two awesome versions out there ... their music video with original drummer John Panozzo (rest in peace), and the other with current drummer Todd Sucherman from their 1996 'Return to Paradise' concert.
Styx is interesting because they have three different vocalists in the band, which are Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw and James Young. Each one is very different and great in their own way. I’d recommend you check out the songs Suite Madam Blue, Man in the Wilderness, and Miss America for a sample of each of their vocal styles.
Dennis, along with his musical talents, was also very theatrical. Tommy Shaw, the guitarist on the far right in this video, also has a beautiful voice. He wrote many of the songs on the Crystal Ball album. For me, Styx II(has the studio version of Lady), Equinox and Crystal Ball are their three best albums. Check out the song "This Old Man" on Crystal Ball. It's a beautifully written song. There is also a song on Styx II with an organ intro, Little Fugue in G minor. And, on Crystal Ball, the song Ballerina is really moving. It is preface by a rendition of Clair De Lune. Thanks for a nice look at Lady. It's really a wonderful song.

Please listen to the studio recording. These harmonies are off balance in this version. I literally listen to this song everyday. Every single day. I’m a harmony junkie. 😍 Love you.
Please please do more Styx!! They have so many great songs, with amazing vocals. DDY really gave such a great direction to the band. So many classical influences mixed with prog/arena rock
How someone who has a divine ear for charisma and quality, it's amazing a lifetime has gone by without her exposure to this Chicago-area Rock Band. Thank the heavens her husband enlightened her to the beauty and grandeur of Styx. This should be very interesting.

Don't you think "A Song for Suzanne" might have been written about his wife, too? (from Man of Miracles)

My very first concert was STYX. I was 13 and my mom wouldn’t let me go so I snuck out the window to go see them. It was sooo worth it. I saw them in 1980. I cried when I heard LADY. Happy Anniversary ❤❤🎉🎉
Me too! I saw Styx in 1980 & 1981 on the UK leg of the Cornerstone & Paradise Theater tours
My first concert was Styx also but it was in January of 1978 (Grand Illusion tour) and I was almost 13. My sister took me cuz I loved both bands at that show. The opening band was Legs Diamond.
@@markwilliams6394 saw them in the summer of '78 at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ. Minnie Ripperton opened for them.
Oh man, she's going to love Dennis DeYoung's voice. Come Sail Away would be a good follow up to Lady.
Absolutely. It's the perfect song.
This was my exact thought!
That was my first thought, "Come Sail Away", along with "Babe".
Was thinking same thing
I can’t tell you enough how much joy I get watching Elizabeth discovering new music and artists.
The very first time I saw her do her little eye flutter, I knew I was hooked. She gets SO into it, and is so knowledgeable.
I hate the live version, I was all hyped and the second I realized it was a live take I lost all interest. I'll never understand why anyone would want to hear a live version of a world famous studio song first. If I'm going to react to a song I want to hear the version that made it famous to being with.
Ikr, I'm really into Dio now 😉
Absolutely!!!
Is so mind blowing to me that she’s hearing these songs/ bands for the first time …but she definitely makes them new again for me .
I've never written on your pod cast before, but I'm 72 years old. When you listen to these voices famous in the 70's and get surprised, I get a smile in my heart because I'm not the only one! Thanks for doing these. It is one of the things I look forward to.

There are so many incredible Styx songs. Just saw them in concert and they are still going strong after 51 years! Crystal Ball is one of my favorite songs.
Mine too!
I love Crystal Ball. Tommy Shaw was a great addition to the band.
Crystal Ball is my favorite Styx song, as well. 💜
Me too!!! Tommy Shaw is ridiculously talented!!
Crystal Ball is a perfect example of how they can shift instantly from delicate and magical to full on head banging rock. So good.
It's about time this band got shown some love, every one of them are top tier musicians!
All I can say is watching you react to the amazing talent of these incredible singers makes me realize why these musicians get all the beautiful women. Us mortal men don't stand a chance...haha. Love your channel.
"Suite Madame Blue" is even better, especially for a first time experience with Styx.

That's what I would have picked too.

Considering how many albums they produced prior to Tommy Shaw's entrance into the band, and more thereafter.
One cool dude!! Congratulations. 👍🏻
One of the top 5 “Supergroups “ of all time 👍🏼😁
Is she young? How does she not know any Rock?? Maybe she had whacky religious parents, rock is devil music..lol
Styx was pure magic. Never felt like they received the accolades they were due.
So very true. That's happened to many bands and artists. Regardless, I'm glad to have them as a part of my life musically.
They definitely never got the credit or recognition they deserved. I feel the same way about Bad Company, super talented group and nobody cared.
Agreed. The press hated them. But then, the press generally hate anything worthwhile.
Agreed. Styx was one of my favorites back in the day. Despite all of their great songs, it seemed that they were somehow dismissed as not worthy of serious consideration.
What accolades didn't they receive ?
I love that Elizabeth's husband chose this for her Anniversary song, with her not knowing what to expect❤
He's a magical guy!
In these days there were no in ear monitors or direct into the board sound. All amps, all loud and it could never be loud enough.... and then you have 3 vocalist trying to harmonize with enough power to cut through the loudness. It is just amazing.
And no Auto tune
Younger people really have no idea how loud concerts used to be. I'm 66, and I miss those days. $5 ticket prices, and 5 or 6 major tours coming through town every month
Your basic " bar band " still does it that way.
Just amps on stage and a P.A.with 2 mains
If you listen to him sing now, his voice has not diminished. He still sounds phenomenal.
Tommy Shaw as well. It's really phenomenal.
Styx sounds the same to this day, my favorite show I've ever seen!
@@stephanierosen7737Styx today does NOT sound the same to a trained ear. They’ve never sounded quite right without Dennis and they never will.
And they are currently on tour - Not sure they are playing near AZ, but Elizabeth and Kirk should go check them out live.
You said "DeYoung took them down the road to nowhere". Are you high?
Sticks played around the world and sold out concert venues throughout the late 1970s into 1983.

Oh wow!
He really does. It’s remarkable. He did a few videos from home during the pandemic lockdown which were so refreshing.
Saw that tour myself my brother and 2 uncles My Uncle Kevin saw the stage leaned over and said get ready for a hell of a show he wasn't wrong.

I was coming here to say exactly this; that she needs to hear the studio version. So much better.
Dennis DeYoung hasn't sung with Styx since 1999. That (also )terrific voice you heard with STYX in 2006 was Canadian Lawrence Gowan. He's been with STYX ever since Dennis' departure.
not only is the audio of these older live versions usually inferior, but the slightly off-key harmonies when they come in is a big part of why I dislike a lot of live versions, especially older recordings like this
Could not agree more, the studio version showcases all of their voices.

Its insane how many iconic bands and songs shes never heard before.
Bear in mind that those who study classical music have 900 years worth to become familiar with. From Gregorian chant, the origins of opera, development of now familiar instruments, Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romance, Modern. Perhaps 100,000 individual works.

I love how she is so expressive and explains her analogies in a way everyone can understand.
Even as a nine year old in 1972 I was a huge STYX loyalist. Even then when my musicality was in its infancy I knew I was hearing exquisite talent! Have been a fan for 50 years!
The 70's were truly amazing times to live through. Every song takes me back in time.
I have heard this song a thousand times yet never hear this version. What a treat!
That's amazing! Also, having tea with Dennis and talking voice would be incredible. I was really taken back by his voice!
@@TheCharismaticVoice Dennis is the kind of person that would love to do just that.... you should approach him professionally as he does some TH-cam interviews. It would be a legitimate great program from you and for him. He seems very kind and somewhat humble with all due respect he's gained over the years. He's a musical gem/genius.....
I'm floored that anyone on this earth hasn't heard this song.... but it's great to see all these folks enjoying songs I grew up hearing on the radio
I grew up with Dennis in the south suburbs of Chicago. Still follow him. His voice is.....amazing!!
My brother was good friends with the Panozzo brothers.
I grew up with the brothers in the nw suburbs.
We had Four ALL TIME FANTASTIC BANDS that were in the Chicago, Quad City, Rockford, Ill. Area that we ‘followed’ religiously!! Such an incredible time to be alive!!🍀⭐️🩷🩷🩷
Wowsa, You are soooo blessed to know such an amazing talented person 👍🏼
Yes…..concerto pianist, amazing songwriter, composer and top shelf vocalist……folks this is one of those rare but true….ARTIST.
His voice just pierces the air right into your ear canals. Just amazing.
The album version is magical in it's own right as it makes a more gradual transition from the piano to the full band. You're able to sort of hear each instrument coming in, and appreciate the musicianship of the band much more. It's fantastic.
So hard to comprehend how hard what he just did on the piano is to play unless you've practiced piano yourself. This is some masterful stuff!
Just because of the classical piano at the beginning,Perfect for an Elizabeth reaction!
Happy Anniversary Day to the charismatic EMK Team
Best was The Grand Illusion
great songs on that album
@@richardsenkBeachwalker ......nope....Charlie is right. I'm from that era and saw ALL OF THESE concerts first time around and Grand Illusion is a great album but.....I can listen to Grand Illusion once in a while....but I can listen to the others anytime/anyday
She's so awesome, because it's obvious that she really knows what she's talking about, and she can hear the talent and skill that made these artists so popular. But she's so amazed by all these artists. I wonder what music she listens to when Kirk's not picking songs for her. Happy Anniversary by the way. Keep making videos. This is reminding me of all the music I used to listen to on the classic rock station, and I'm going back and adding more great music to my playlists.
Please listen to the studio recording. These harmonies are off balance in this version. I literally listen to this song everyday. Every single day. I’m a harmony junkie. 😍 Love you.
Totally agree.
My thoughts exactly the studio version is very very tight…..very rarely does a concert performance outdo the studio version….
Agreed. Styx and Scorpions have my favorite harmonies of all time
@@SepticFuddy oh mannnn. I don’t know Scorpions. Sounds like I’m in for a great treat. ❤️
@@mireyarinna171 They're more of a hair metal sound but their harmonies are awesome. Some of their songs are on this channel
Love the way you pick these songs apart. I appreciate them so much more, never really listened to them like you do. Thank you
As you mentioned the studio version has perfect harmonies it is what drew so many fans to this amazing band!
