    Honestly these cameras are beginning to be so good it's hard to say one is bad. If someone took only the s8 pics and put them in a wallpaper app most people would be in awe. Same goes for note 8, iPhone 8, pixel, etc. So basically if you have a newer phone you're good no matter what you get

    • @YouwereWondering_TAW
      @YouwereWondering_TAW 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yup the comparison was surprisingly closer than i thought, s8 really gave a good fight to pixel 2 which is often considered to be the best smartphone camera right now.

      Have to agree with it, the idea of new model of smartphone every year have helped to create a competition and actually made better technology on the phones possible but at the end of the day the faster you move the faster you will reach the limit, i think smartphone market is getting kinda saturated the only major difference in different iterations of smartphone is the price tag.
      i make tech based content in my channel, if you can spare some time kindly give it a try. I would be really grateful if you could.

      Almost. A lot is up to the user itself. I reckon you can give me any 5 year old phone and I could take a better photo than most people with a brand new flagship model. Skill is more important than the tool. That said I wish I had a Pixel 2!!

    You guys just can't understand how crazy Asian women is to make their selfies more attractive, and they don't care about whether the selfie is real or not all they care about is how bright and smooth their skin is and how small their face looks. Samsung did this for a reason.

    Pixel 2 has a better camera but the S8 is a better phone in general, especially when it comes to the display.

    • @derekfurst6233

      I prefer a more natural color calibration myself. otherwise, the pixels display is fine, quad hd, oled panel, long aspect ratio. Burn in got fixed in 8.1 oreo (Which i have now) and blue shift happens to tons of phones, i never watch videos outside of head-on anyway

    • @rkgsd

      @@derekfurst6233 The Pixel 2 XL has the most blue shift of any phone. It's a cheap quality POLED screen from LG. If you play that much money, you deserve better.

      My Pixel 2 is an amazing device.What I really like is that Google continuously sends software upgrades that keep the experience fresh and new. It's like getting a new phone many times a year. All the other flagships sell with last years OS. Its hard for me to process buying a flagship with last years OS and who knows when you getting the updates.

  • @TheRealMafoo

    1.7 vs 1.8 takes in 12% more light. That's not insignificant, and would account for the better night shots.

    • @AXYZE
      @AXYZE 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Aperture is about depth of field, not about light. Light Trasmission ("T" ex. T2.0) tells you how much light is being transmitted to sensor. For example my f3.5 14-42mm Lumix kit lens has T4.9, Lumix G 25mm f1.7 has T2.0 and Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 has T1.8. By the way aperture is just ratio between lens diameter and focal length, you cant compare it in smartphones like that because every sensor in this market have other size. Its not like in DSLRs where you have standarized sizes like APS-C. Xperia Z line have 1/2.3" sensors, iPhone have 1/3" sensors and if you have F2.0 on Xperia Z3 then to get the same depth field on iPhone you should have F1.6 lens. Why I compared it?
      Because Pixel XL has 1/2.3" while Galaxy S8 has 1/2.5". Now you should understand why "1.7 vs 1.8 takes in 12% more light" is wrong.

    • @RennieAsh
      @RennieAsh 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does lower aperture "have more colour" or take better night shots? Because I hear that a lot.

    • @AXYZE
      @AXYZE 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you want to compare 2 smartphones then aperture tells you nothing. If you have camera with sensor which is in standarized size like APS-C, Micro Four Thirds or something other then more aperture means that front portion of whole lens is opened more widely - it will have more bokeh, it will bring more light, but also propably you will get less sharp image - thats why every portrait is shot with lens like f/1.4 (you dont see that many tiny skin defects). If you have two other f1.7 lenses they will give you other transmission of light, other colors, other contrast etc. Only thing which remains the same across all f1.7 lenses for some system like APS-C is depth of field - bokeh. One rule - no matter which lens you choose, if you will set higher aperture (for ex. f2.8 on f1.7 lens) you will always get opposite of that I told earlier so you will have less bokeh, less light but propably better sharpness.
      Next thing. F1.7 on your smartphone and F1.7 on your DSLR will be completly other thing. Why? Because as I said its just ratio. If sensor is bigger then lens need to be also bigger to have the same ratio - thats why DSLR have so big lenses.
      To get the same depth of field on different systems you should set them to:
      f/11 - FullFrame ex. Sony A7s II
      f/5.6 - Micro FourThirds ex. Panasonic Lumix G7
      f/2.0 - Xperia XZ, Google Pixel or smth other
      If you have same sensor, same lens, same software etc. But you can set f1.7 or f2.8 then f1.7 will give you more light as I wrote before. You wont see overbright images, because software will lower ISO and shutter speed. Higher ISO = higher sensitivity to light, but you also get interferences which you see as noise. The best results of color etc. you get on basic ISO, but its VERY difficult thing, so I make something a lot easier to understand. Lower ISO means that sensor doesnt need to push limits too far so you get a lot more accurate colors, more steps between colors (try to photograph flowers or smth vibrant with high iso - you will get just one color like you would draw these flowers in Paint lol) and more positive things. I wont write more things because thats propably already too much for you so I'll make quick tldr
      tl;dr
      Bigger aperture SHOULD mean better night shots, but dont get fooled by it. Its like cores in processor - you can have 10 cores but they are shitty and same with lens. A LOT MORE IMPORTANT thing for night photography is OIS, because it stabilizes whole lens during image capture so even your smartphone can make photos can capture light for 1/10 seconds instead of like 1/100 seconds - thats 10x more light!!!!!! yes, im not wrong, difference is really that huge. If you have two recent smartphones with F1.7 and F2.0, but only this with F2.0 have OIS then this F2.0 smartphone will have A LOOOOT better night pictures - better colors, a lot less noise.

    • @AXYZE
      @AXYZE 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OIS = Optical Image Stabilization. EIS(Electronic Image Stabilization) give you nothing in photography.

    • @angelnino7253
      @angelnino7253 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      AXYZE absolutely wrong. Totally wrong off the fucking charts. Bigger aperture is more light, but in smartphones field of depth doesn't due to the small sensor size

    Thanks for the video, very informative and helpful - was a pretty fair test and I did notice all the problems / annoyances I have with my S8 (red/yellow saturation, light leading to over exposure, distance / range). Would argue that the alias / jagged parts are subjective - I've always assumed that meant the picture was sharper and clearer in details (than the Pixel 2). I have to concur that the selfie mode is unbelievable on the Pixel 2; there are so many differences that I would choose the Pixel 2 for selfies instead. S8 does take much nicer selfies in daylight, but the night time shot was accurate of how they tend to turn out.

  • @Vision33r
    @Vision33r 7 ปีที่แล้ว +70

    It's hard to justify the $200 difference for the Pixel 2. The biggest thing is the Pixel 2 has a weaker screen. It's washed out and colors aren't very good. On the camera side, I see the differences but they are not world's apart that's ok. But not having the micro-SD card and no head phone jack is a big NO from me. Google needs to get off their high horse and support features that people want.
    Pixel doesn't have one standout feature, the camera will probably lose out next year as the Note 8 camera is already just a few hair below it.

    • @indranilmajumder
      @indranilmajumder 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Next year Google will probably put a flawless screen on Pixel 3 and their camera quality keeps improving exponentially...so I think Pixel 3 is gonna be the real winner next year

    • @derekfurst6233

      The pixel 1 and 2's issues all stemmed from production issues and changing plans mid stream. Now that they formally aquired htc's phone production team, i expect the pixel 3 to be much better. that said, pixel 2 is dope

    These cameras are really tough to determine a clear winner. even the one is better shot you have to look at it like 20 times for you realized what’s missing on the other one . I don’t think there is a phone out there that we can say wow that’s the best camera , Tough

    I thought the Pixel 2 at night wasn’t that great but the S8 was very good at night. The video in the day time was natural and realistic on the Pixel 2 whereas the S8 was just good not great. So I think overall I think it is neck and neck but if I was pushed it would be the Pixel 2 ...but I wouldn’t use it at night. Great comparison test.....just love your channel and the honesty of your testing. Keep up the great work

    I was looking for a comparison between the pixel 2 & galaxy s6 edge, but since the pixel was standing strong competing with the s*8,* I think I’m set on which one. I wasn’t too worried about the noise from filming at night since I’m unlikely to be filming when it’s dark out but rather when it’s bright out at like 2 in the afternoon. For context, the reason I’d be getting one is strictly for the purpose of filming so I can keep the phone I currently use (iPhone 11 Pro Max) for other stuff.

    Virtually every test I've watched including doing a blind test with the new iPhone the Pixel 2 has been the winner. I got one on order - the video stabalisation is the feature Ive liked the most - just to get those fake dolly shots to cut into my videos - and not carrying a Gimbal around.

    I'd say the s8 because you can improve things with the blown out highlights even in auto mode by tapping to focus and then dropping the exposure slider while on the pixel you're stuck with the noisy murky night shots. The pixel has much better hdr processing so performs better in full auto but all in all of go with the s8. You can easily do something about the blown out highlights but not much you can do about the pixels lowlight performance.

    I will probably be getting the Pixel 2 XL. Everyone tells me that I should use my DSLR camera for pictures that are far better than any smartphone. However, the smartphone's pictures will always be better for me, since I cannot figure out how to use the DSLR cameras. By the time I get them set up, the opportunity for the picture I wanted is gone. What I have is maybe two or three usable photos and a bunch of useless, send-to-trash photos. Since the Pixel 2XL seems to have the best camera so far, I will choose that one, and perhaps I'll be able to use some of the other smartphone features, as well, such as make a phone call.

    Love the Pixel 2 photography and the video stabilization, but video quality still leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully Pixel 3 will enable HDR+ for videos! That would be a huge leap forward

  • @RennieAsh
    @RennieAsh 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    HDR = more noise. Some footage also looked more juddery in the Pixel 2. It's good for daytime photos and some lower light stuff, but sacrifices a bit at night shots and video.

  • @kevins3821
    @kevins3821 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    S8: Better for low-light photo, and more saturated color (not Natural, looks like already edited with color correction software).
    Pixel 2: Better picture quality (day time), more natural color (some people prefer More saturated color like the S8), better video (day time), better for selfie
    Overall:
    S8: Night time overall.
    PIXEL 2: Day time overall.
    *i prefer S8 because i like taking Low-Light photo, and i don't like taking selfie.
    Which one you guys prefer?

    Pixel seems to be winning this one but woah, it was much closer than i expected s8 did put on some serious fight there assuming that s8 is from early this year. I do feel like not 8 would've been a better comparison as that's the latest offering from samsung. But yeah, pixel is the camera king and you can clearly see that in the pics here.

  • @JeffreySutton
    @JeffreySutton 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know you're comparing the auto function of these cameras, but bottom line is if you switch to the pro mode on the Galaxy S8, which is awesome, you can correct some of these issues.

  • @Nox444
    @Nox444 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should've used pro mode so you could test the quality better. Some of this is just a tweak of the white balance, shutter speed, or exposure.

  • @DarkDrake5481
    @DarkDrake5481 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can honestly say having an s8. It does not matter. Both cameras are top of the line and no matter what you go with you have an excellent phone. But if I had to pick one I would say pixel 2 only cos the video was so much more stable.

    Frankly, if I was huge on selfies, I would absolutely buy the Pixel 2 XL. It looks phenomenal. But man, in most of these shots I either prefer the S8, or if I prefer the pixel 2, I remember that it costs quite a bit more than the S8 and no longer does it feel that justified.

  • @SuhailKhan-vr6ik

    The Pixel automatically takes pictures in HDR....although it's definitely a good thing for it but I wonder how much of a difference would there be between the two if you take pictures from S8 in HDR mode.....considering that most of the times the Pixel photos are little ahead purely because of dynamic range

    • @indranilmajumder
      @indranilmajumder 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      HDR images from S8 are just overexposed to gain details from shadows and photos are a lot softer...Its not even a match for Pixel's HDR+

    The Pixel has better photos in most situations, especially on the selfie camera. But some people prefer their pictures one way, compared to someone else. The camera is just one thing to consider here. Both are great smartphones. It's just preference.

    Honestly, the Pixel 2 is going to get better. Pixel Visual Core on the Pixel 2 is a coprocessor that hasn't been activated yet. Imagine what Google could do once that will be released. The SD835 and the coprocessor working in junction could be a huge game changer.

    I would say that the Pixel 2 is better but I think the S8 can capture some very similar photos if you use the manual modes a little more. For a quick shot the Pixel 2 is better but if you take time then the S8 is also about on par. As an owner of the S8, I'm very surprised about the Pixel 2's new camera

  • @asmokingp3005

    imo the pics in pxl are a little better but not that much different that you would choose one over the other based on camera alone. NGL cameras on phones now a days if they are flagship phones and from the same year they are not leagues above each other just alittle better or alitle more intuitive. BUt cameras on phones now are just all good at this point.
