The great thing about psychology is that, it's everywhere, in our every day lives but most of the time, we do not take time to even observe what's happening within us, around us and that's what interested me in studying psychology.
I just wanted to say, I first watched this video in 2011 and I'm now approaching the last year of my Psychology degree (with honours! woo). I'd like to personally thank Professor Mike Atkinson for encouraging this passion of mine back when I was 11, never looked back :)
Psychology people like this guy seem so cool. So in-touch with behavior and society. This guy's pretty deep. I want to be like him someday. Like a sort of wacky, yet profound intellectual... Maybe someday
We know alot about the brain but not alot about how the mind works. Is how I introduced my self to my psychology degree pursuit there at the start of my 4 years 8 semesters of college. Dormant is the word I used towards degree along with the topic of being curious about failure instead of depressed by it. With this I brought the experimental psychologist idea of "understanding how to explain schizophrenia by way of knowing how the schizophrenic's brain work". Terrill TC!
Wow, I can really relate, i'm in my first year Uni and the classes that I loved in high school I don't quite like anymore except the one that I thought I would never enjoy, and thats math. i love these videos, full of great surprises and advice!
Outstanding video!! Thanks a lot for uploading this. Currently, I have the pleasure of taking Dr Mike's psychology class and I must say that it is delightful and exhilarating.
Yes. I'm a third year psych student and for my major so far I've been required to take basic Statistics, behavioral statistics, and research methods which of course has Statistics. It definitely isn't easy and is a whole OTHER realm of math and I've had a single problem take 1.5 pages of paper, but it's doable and totally worth it when you get to where you wanted
There is no such thing as "bad at math". Maybe you have low grades, for now. Yes, you'll need math - mostly, you'll need statistics, which you will have to study hard, but from scratch. I wouldn't say that high school grades in math mean you won't be good at that! You may become good at math if you understand the ins and outs of the problem you are solving, and it becomes meaningful to you. It might be that once you start learning how statistics helps us be awesome at measuring human behaviour, you'll become fascinated with it and won't get enough of it! What you need is a willingness and determination to put in the time.
1:08.I am a psychology supporter myself but I think he was very biased in the psychology vs psychiatry commentary. The REAL reason why people often suggest going to a psychologist vs a psychiatrist is NOT because a psych has many more "weapons" in which to prescribe treatment. The REAL reason is because many people are wary of psychiatrist for the reason that they treat mental disorders medically. If you're having mental or emotional problems.. wouldn't you rather work through them the "safe" way using logic and reasoning and methods to help you change or shift your thinking? Or would you rather risk being medicated and end up messing your mind up? I don't know if the medicine that psychiatrist can prescribe can actually mess your mind up but that's the phobia that most people have (whether it's true or not) and the reason why they prefer to go to a psychologist for the safer option. Also, a psychiatrist is usually more expensive than psychologist
Well sadly most psychiatrists immediately administer medicine because they aren't really trained properly in psychology. Also medicine rarely helps people and therapy has been more effective in the long term. From my own personal experience, a psychiatrist can work if you need medication, which is rarely the case. I would recommend therapy as someone who suffered from mental health issues. A psychiatrist can make things worse if you go to one immediately. For example, I was given a dose that posed the risk of triggering suicidal thoughts. Medicine changes your brain chemistry so if psychiatrists just give you medicine, which is often the case, you could be in danger! See a psychologist first and if it's not working then proceed to get medication.
I am only 14 years old. I am planning for my future. I really want to study psychology. But can a psychologist's salary can support a family? I can't decide whether I will study psychology or not. I would like you to know that, not being boastful, I am good in math. Average in science and english. Please, help me decide.
Im 14 right now(a year after you posted that). I have actually the same question. even worse im from greece and it will challenging to find a job. if you answered your question please let me know.
Do things because you like it, if you will just base in money (which is really important in our life), you might regret some things when you grow up. Enjoy life Josh. Be mindful and not mind full :) I'm sure you will be successful when you work wise. -Psychology major from Ph
I need you to introspect what that fear is all about. What is its root cause and where is it coming from? It's likely that it's the pressure of marks and expectations. Dont think in that way, have a deep quest for knowledge, and do what you feel is right for yourself
Can somebody help mee ? I'm really interested in Psychology and Philosophy ans biology 💕 But I'm also interested in Law . I don't know why since my childhood I always want to be part of equality , justice . Exactly this things are the most important things for me . But You know being lawyer is really formal . And I'm a introvert person , I can really understand people . Lawyers don't have a time for them :( But I really like to improve myself and my big dream is traveling the world 😂
Psychology might be "probable", but its probably is low compared to classical physics, chemistry, and, other examples, such astronomy and geology because human beings are not things (brains in this case) and are unique to each and every individual.

One of the best teachers I ever had. LOVED Super Psych. Thanks Professor Atkinson!!
Another one of the best psychology professors in Canada.
I wish I had this guy as my psychology teacher. He knows what he is talking about.
He explains it exceptionally well.
His words are definitely helpful!!
Further to his point about usefulness of taking Psychology is that it's also very helpful in the business world -- for marketing, sales, etc...

That canadian accent

I dont know who Atkinson is or really anything about psychology. I thought the thumbnail was Sean Connery disguised with a mustache. That is all.
I am only 14 years old. I am planning for my future.

Be a psychologist, go the phd route and do research. If you're really good, you will get mad monies.
