      I will never understand those who do. I guess my only exception, in regard to buying at the market price, is for watch models that are no longer being manufactured. I paid over the retail price for my Tudor Date Day.

    2023 was definitely the year for watch deals. I picked up my Speedmaster Professional, Pelagos 39, 43mm Bulova panda, and Hamilton Murph 38mm for less than what a brand new Speedmaster 3861 would cost at the AD! Everything was used but mint with the exception of the Bulova which was new. Also, my first introduction to Tudor and the Pelagos is amazing so far. I wear it way more than my sub date.

      @merc7paul 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm hoping to add the 39 Pelagos, I wear a 40mm sub and I tried the 39 in the store it felt so light but I'm sure I'll get used to it and even maybe prefer it, my only hang up is worried about scratches to grade 2 titanium I heard it cannot be polished out for whatever that's worth

      @dennischen8887 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@merc7paul you will get used to the lightness. I bought the watch primarily for the titanium and its lightweight properties. As for scratches, it’s no worse or better than my sub from my own experience.

    i had the Turtle ‘Grenade’ too, but the 6306/6309s from the 70s are different level. I would swap into one of those. i would keep the Prince DateDay - unless/until you obtain a DayDate, the steel BB39, your Arnie, Grand Seiko SBGA, Seaweed 300M, and chop the rest in for an Explorer40, live a streamlined life, and take time to consider something really special, including the ExplorerII and Submariner you mention, along with a real Pepsi to replace the Tudor GMT at some point 🤓

    The issue with Rolex is resellers not Rolex. I have 3 Rolexes and bought them all at retail. This is because you used to just walk into an AD and they were all there on display and for sale. When I bought my sub there was the Hulk just sitting there ready for anyone to buy. But this was 2008. Rolex did not change but the market did.

    • @TheTimekeeper
      @TheTimekeeper  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those were the good old days. I know it’s the resellers that are doing the gate keeping. It’s just such a patronizing experience.

    • @sinjinadams2862
      @sinjinadams2862 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are right but now Rolex needs to change. This is not 2008. The demand for Rolex watches has increased dramatically since then. Rolex needs to appreciate this and increase production to meet today's demand.

    • @2K9s
      @2K9s 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There’s really no comparison to Rolex in 2000 when I bought my first versus today. The issue with Rolex is a combination of the AD’s and Rolex teeing up their certified pre owned watches. This perfect storm, over the course of several years, has disrupted and disenfranchised new collectors imho. Luckily, if someone really wants a Rolex today, there are plenty of people selling them. Patience and careful consideration pays off.

    I have about 100 watches, many are microbrands and Aliexpress homages in addition to Tissot, Seiko, Orient, Bulova, Citizen, etc. The whole collection probably cost me around 20K. I just can't get myself to drop serious coins on watches knowing that a pretty close equivalent costs less than $100 to make. Fore example I had 4 different GMT Master II homages made with personalized branding and logo for about $100 each (Seiko NH34a GMT movement, see-through case back, ceramic bezel insert, sapphire crystal, glide-lock clasp, etc.). Or mechanical chronos around $150 with Sea-gull ST19 movement (machined on the Venus 175 Swiss equipment).

    • @TheTimekeeper
      @TheTimekeeper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a price limit where I like to stay under. I’ve stayed there for the most part. I’ll only go over my comfort level for only really special pieces. I try to appreciate both low, mid and higher end pieces alike.

    So far I've limited myself to just short of $2K (including import fees and taxes) so no Rolex or Tudors for me. Also for me 40mm is too small, but if there is something really special about it I might do it. Otherwise I try to go for 42mm+ if possible. I just like the wrist presence. Thanks for showing us your watch collection. Not much of an intersection with mine but I do have an Oris Aquis.

    • @TheTimekeeper
      @TheTimekeeper  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I occasionally like a big watch too. True divers should be big in order to work best for their intended purpose. The 1926 I bought for $1500 plus tax and it really packs a lot of value. You have to stay where you’re comfortable. I’ve really slowed down my buying since selling my Tudor Style, which took months to sell. It taught me to be more selective and patient. That being said, I’m always looking for the next watch.

    My one and only watch in my single watch collection is the Seiko SSK001 (5 GMT). I love this watch, but the one thing I dislike about it is the lume that never glows when you actually need it. Pretty much useless. If you say that this is the best Lume out of all the other watches in your collection, that’s pretty bad.

    I got into watch collecting after the AD games started, unfortunately. I also refuse the play them, so my plan is to just wait how ever long it takes for the market to change. My plan is to just snag a lightly used copy of the Rolex model I want most off chrono24 once it goes a bit below MSRP. Seems it's well on it's way now, last I checked. No shortage of great watches to entertain myself with in the meantime, so not worried about it.

    • @TheTimekeeper
      @TheTimekeeper  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been considering the same. Getting a lightly used one but the prices are either over retail or so close to the new price that I’m still waiting.

  • @jackominty3633
    @jackominty3633 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you tell your AD that you would take pretty much any steel sports watch, it could be interpreted as you want a watch you can flip for a quick profit, doesn't matter which one.
    If - instead - you pick ONE! and give them the impression that this watch is the one that keeps you awake at night - then you might have more luck.
    Also, FFS, choose a damn watch! You are right, the GMT will be out of the question, ditto the Daytona, but - my favorite - the Polar Explorer II isn't that big a deal, you might get one in a year or less. I won't go into why it's so great, but it is! You need a 7+ inch wrist, of course.

    • @TheTimekeeper
      @TheTimekeeper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m aware of this. That’s why I said I hate the games you have to play. I said that after having purchased 3 watches from them over a period of 3 years. I still have all 3. Next time I go, I’m going to say I want just one, like the explorer II. The fact that I have to have strategy going in like I’m going to war, speaks volumes.

    I watched your video several times and this is what I see.
    Your collection could benefit from a little addition by subtraction. You have some amazing watches, but they kind of get lost in the mix.
    You have a lot of Tudors that look like Rolex Datejusts. Have you considered selling them and buying one Rolex Datejust?
    There is a big jump between your Seikos, especially Seiko 5, and your luxury watches. My suggestion is to keep your favorite Seikos, sell maybe half of the Seiko 5s, and get one higher end Seiko to befge the gap between your $200 5s, and your grand Seiko. Like, maybe and Alpinist gmt.
    Finally, all your watches are fairly recent models. Have you considered a vintage watch, or two?
