  • Took a ride in my friend's 1991 Toyota MR2 turbo! This is a SW20 chassis with a fully rebuilt 3SGTE Gen 4 with a bunch of awesome power adders or bolts ons, such as a Berk Exhaust and downpipe, C15b billet turbo, among many others.
    Let me know what you think of this car review/ride along in the comments!

    Great job ryan! Loving the progress, and this is a beauty of an MR2! May I suggest maybe do front facing video recording during your moments of commentary about the car, and then a steadycam device to better hold the phone to avoid shake. Other than that your note 9 is amazingly clear!

      Thank you! I agree, both of those things would be a great addition. I have been try to decide on how to do both of them!
      I am amazed by the Note9's camera lol. With some light color correction after and good framing, it is a serious little beast!

    ive been looking into getting one of these. any recommendations or things to look for? look for 93 and up models, looking to do full bolt on.

    • @battleshop3580
      @battleshop3580  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look for rust under the fiberglass parts. Check the radiator hoses (they run the length of the car). 9/10 Turbo models are going to need lots of work in the running of them, they tend not to be taken care of unless they are owned by collectors and then they are normally really expensive.
      Finding the cleanest chassis is the hardest part. 3sgte swaps are relatively affordable since the motors and trans are really only bought for mr2.
      I personally wouldn't worry about the whole 93+ thing, the differences are minor if you're just looking for a driver and car to have fun. They would be more collectable, but don't really change the driving experience.

      @@battleshop3580 the only reason I was looking for the 93+ is because of the snap oversteer issue I've been hearing about. and the last thing I want is to spin on a corner in the street somewhere. As far as body, the main one I've been looking at is a RHD on at a dealer with 30k original miles. I heard about the nasty rust issues on the cars so I do want to find a well preserved one. I've seen some that were in the $8k range or the imported ones that are around $10-15k range (USD). Any advice on modding? EMS to use? I've seen a lot of people running Mega Squirt. Im interested in a stock turbo car with a decent motor and trans for like 300-350 WHP and I hear these have a pretty good Trans. Good for corners for when I have to shut up an AMG owner lol

      @@eurochargedmason1989 The snap oversteer that many talk about is a DRIVER error, basically an over-correction to rear end slipping, many drivers are accustom to the feel of a front engine vehicle, the way the weight moves in a mid-engine is different and because of that will "feel" like it is out of step more than it would feel like in a front engine car. The early cars were set up with more rear end rotation due to the rear tires not gaining as much camber and gaining more toe as the later years would for the same suspension travel. Learning to drive it near its limit takes practice, I would HIGHLY recommend running in Auto X events just to give you safe and cheap practice with the car near its limits.
      Modding will kind of depend on the generation of 3sgte you end up owning. My general advice is a full standalone like a MS3x wired in, or their MS2PNP but this will have poor Flex Fuel and boost by speed support compared to the MS3(x). I have become more interested in the EcuMaster Classic/Black as I look for EMS for my 2jz project. With the standalone, deleting the AFM (if older 3sgte) and removing a lot of the complicated control systems opens the door to maxing out the stock parts and be in the 225-235whp range, again depending on generation. If you want more, the turbos I would be looking at on the lower/simpler end would be a modified C15b (what is being used on this mr2 in the video) which with a standalone, enough fuel will be 275-300whp or a EFR6758 or 6258 which with enough fuel will be able to do 350whp or so on pump gas and more into the 400-450whp on e85/race gas (although you're getting to the internal limits of the gen 2/3 and over the limit for gen 4/5 imo) while being even more responsive than stock turbos with a better torque curve and boost threshold.

      If you look at the shot of his engine bay it looks like he is running no BOV so the air will just bounce around the intercooler piping when he lets off the throttle. I have the same setup on my Gen4 swap with no issues and personally I think it sounds way cooler.

    Would 3sgte turbo kits fit fine on a 3sge cause I’m gonna buy a non turbo mr2 and I’m completely new to this kinda scene, just came from a Subaru

    • @battleshop3580
      @battleshop3580  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      your n/a mr2 will have a 5sfe, totally different motor. some people have used the 5sfe block as a basis for a stroker turbo but it isn't easy. i'd recommended doing a gen 4/5 3sgte full pullout, or you can use the 5sfe manual trans (open diff and a touch weaker than an e153 turbo trans) to save some money.

    How much did it cost to build it?
    I plan on doing this to my mr2 sadly I don't have space to do the swap so I'd have to pay someone to do it for me.

    • @battleshop3580
      @battleshop3580  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The cost for a Gen 4 swap ranges from engine cost + $1200 up to $6000 or more if you want a built engine or big turbo e85 monster, generally budget around $2000-3000 on top of engine costs. Depending where you are located there are some really reputable MR2 based shops that do this all the time. I would highly recommend getting on the mr2 owners forum and also the facebook page to talk with some guys in your area on what is best for you specifically.
