I'm going to retire next year from 35 years Social Work. 35 years of soul crushing, heart breaking, mind bending and nerve racking stress and heartache and I would do it all over again in a second.
@@rayaparke4828 because social workers are nothing but useless dickriders, and only care about themselves and especially the female ones only care about their salary.
The good feeling that you get from helping others is priceless. However, we really need to advocate for ourselves for better pay. As important as my work is, many of my friends whom I grew up with, many of whom don't have an undergraduate or graduate degree like myself, make far more money than I do. I love sports, but there's something wrong when you can be good at hitting a baseball, or knocking someone out in boxing and make tons more all of us, who are social workers, and are literally helping to save the lives of people whom we serve.
I’m only 16 right now but I know that social work is the career for me. I love helping people, especially children, and while I know it isn’t the best paid job I believe that passion is very important. Hopefully by the time I’m done with college and starting my career there will be better pay and/or unionization of the field.
It’s so cool that you have such a strong conviction! I had absolutely NO idea what I wanted when I Was 16 hahaha I agree passion is extremely important! PAssion is what keeps us social workers strong when we face adversity and burn out!
I dont care about the money I just want to save other people life. If I ever leave this earth I want to die knowing that I have made someone's life better. I'm gonna be proud of my self. Money comes and go. But people have only one life so let's change it for the better so they can be happier. I know god will be proud of me. And I will be too💚🧡💙💜💙🖤🖤💙🖤💙💗💛💛❤❤
That's beautiful!!💕 it's hard keeping up that attitude when rent needs to be paid or I don't have enough money made to buy Christmas gifts for my family .. however! Because of that passion to help others is why there are social workers out on the field now! thank you for sharing your beautiful heart! 💕
You don't care about the money how you gonna pay your bills? Are you going to have a family? Are you going to have your children struggle? Think carefully. Many of us had such lofty ideals before going into the profession. Thank God I was able to leave the profession.
I know, until the bills start to pile up. I'd rather be like Bill Gates. Make all the money and give it back to the community. Professional social workers are under a lot of stress balancing their own needs and that of their clients. I say get rich and you'd be in a better position to help. Gates its worth the support of a thousand social workers.
Here in Canada social workers’ salaries are almost on par with nurses, meaning around $60k-$80k a year or more. And as far as level of education goes, for most jobs one needs bachelor’s degree in social work, so I’m guessing that master’s is more of an optional rather than a requirement or if one wants to get a higher paying social work job. I believe they are also unionized. Social workers r valuable here since so many people seek help & assistance. My parents were in a car accident almost a decade ago and the social worker that handled their case was very nice and gave the best help possible to them. So, here in Canada, we give great value and appreciation to our social workers. It’s nice to hear your view on it though as an American. I hope you guys get the appreciation and salary you deserve as well.
hi there thanks so much for your comment! wowww that's so interesting, thank you for informing me - i had NO idea things were so different in Canada.. i'm so glad to hear that the social worker was able to help your parents... so sorry for the accident!! and thank you kindly, i also hope that social workers will recieve more appreciation here as well!
In Canada more and more jobs do require an MSW. Ive been looking for a fulltime position for about 7 months now, and almost all openings Ive seen require a MSW.
actually my above comment applies to Ontario, in the other provinces since the populations are much less dense the requirements for social workers could be not as high. As far as social work in Ontario goes, social workers are not unionized, positions are largely part-time and/or contract.
Hy i would love to talk to you more about this. As I am coming to Canada to be a social service worker. It would be great if you can give me more information. My Insta id is @rajhshah
Social workers, like nurses are predominantly female and unfortunately, this is one of, if not the main reason social workers are paid so little in comparison to other professions. It’s time social workers stand up against the inequalities they endure because of their gender and fight for equal rights, as nurses have accomplished to do!
Lets start the conversation. How do we become unionized like the nurses? I know many social workers who are great advocators for others. But, I think as social workers we tend to forget to advocate for ourselves. So, lets do it!
Rapmajor this is one of the major complaints about NASW. There was a time when NASW advocated for the social worker. Now it seems to advocate for the client which is not what a professional organization is supposed to do!
@@jackdooley8732 I AGREE!! I don't have a clue what social worker's are like in Canada but here in the US they treat the good parents that don't have much and have no money like CRAP!! I have seen them intentionally remove children right down to newborns from good homes the parent's may not been perfect but I don't recall anyone being perfect except Jesus Christ!!
Its all about power and control. Those a-holes choose the profession because they are sadistic tyrant wanna-bees. Nosy fukkers that love to trash other`s lives just on their say-so. It is nearly impossible to get a judge to be unswayed by what one of these monsters says , and they know it. They don`t want to save lives , on the contrary. they want to wreck them.
Go to school for 6 years to never use 1/2 of what you learned. Could have used that money to send some of that money to send some of your "clients" to go to trade school.
I literally cant anymore... I feel like ive seen the worst of humanity and me today from when I started working are two totally different people. I feel like this career path has literally blackened my heart and stolen my joy which is why Im leaving. I am grateful that there are people that are less affected and are willing to pursue this career path but good luck to all the future social workers! Seriously, good luck and thank you to all the current social workers.
I make over 40,000 as a new MSW for a non profit. This pay allowed me to move from the urban community to a suburban community. I live in Pennsylvania. For me my degree allowed me to not live pay check to pay check for the first time in my life.
Hello! I'm an undergrad psychology major and looking into social work at a nonprofit. I was was wondering if you could expand more on your experience there and what made the experience so fulfilling. Thank you!
You hit the nail on the head with a ten pound hammer. God bless you. and god bless you again for telling the truth. It's all about the money .Hallelujah. (thank you spell check).
how many years did you need to study to attain your bachelors? ive just turned thirty and just trying to plan out a better future for myself and others any advice and information will be appreciated and thank you for all you do :)
I'm a simple guy from Rome, Italy, whose life you'd consider 'normal' or even 'mundane' but you know what, I can relate to each and every word you said in this video.. I wake up everyday feeling the NEED for helping people and turning it into a job would crown a dream to me! The only richness I'm looking for is the one belonging to the human soul.. I am in the middle of my bachelor degree right now but I can promise you that I will do my best to try and get into a Master's degree on Social Work and hopefully manage to become a Social Worker. Thank you for such videos, you are positively influencing my choice!! Keep up the good work
NASW is a disappointing money suck that does nothing for ennobling the profession or educating the general public on what it takes to be an LCSW. ... really unclear why they exist.
Money doesn’t matter. The lives we touch matter. Those we help matter. I am in college prep to become a social worker. It will be a process because of my disabilities but that is my dream
I truly believe if your just choosing this as a profession, dont. If your in it to improve the lives of individuals and society at large your in the right place. Its more a calling than a profession.
I love your passion! I am going into my MSW program really soon and watching people talk about social work honestly and passionately is so great!! Also, my prediction is this new generation of social workers WILL unionize! ✊🏾
this may be the case for where you live, but in Australia the base wage is $70k base (up to $96k after 5 years) and a senior social worker earns FROM $106k. work life balance is also different here, especially in government hospitals. 38 hrs per week full time, Monday - Friday. if that isn't balanced then I don't know what is. you also have part time options of course as well
hey I live in aus too and I was interested in going to uni and becoming a social worker. I’d like to know more about how the career is in Australia, would it be possible if you could tell me more about it? My Instagram is @abbsuke if you could message me on there
Hi, im a first year Social Work student from Philippines. I just want to thank you for sharing your opinion about Social Work, it really motivates me to be more passionate about this profession. Keep inspiring us! 💖 God Bless you
It's funny how we spend our whole careers advocating for others, and yet have neglected to also advocate for ourselves. I hope we will unionize and demand better working conditions so we can be better equipped to serve our clients!
Interesting video 🙂 Here in California, and specifically the San Francisco Bay Area, pay depends on several things. Government agencies usually start at around 60k and can go to about 110k at the highest worker levels. Supervisors and managers can make up to about 160k. Social workers in CBO's, etc. usually make about 10-25 % less. Keep in mind though, that this is one of the most expensive places to live, so cost of living is off the charts! Caseloads are super high here, and we have a very difficult time attracting and retaining line staff. Previously we only accepted BSW/MSW's in my County agency, but we have opened it up to psychology, human development, etc. since we were not getting a large enough pool of applicants. I've been a SW for 23 years and this is definitely a very different time....STILL LOVE WHAT I DO THOUGH!!!
Hello. I’m thinking about getting a BSW in social work and live in California. I’m hoping a bachelors will be sufficient, can you give any feedback? I’m interested in laws and policies and human rights.
Social Worker for 15 years and idea of unionizing is right on point ! In my area, Nursing Assistants (2 -4 week training) make more than a lot of BSW. Even though statistics show the monetary value of social work intervention.
it's so interesting to watch your videos from a different continental view. i study social work in germany and here social worker unions are p big. the salary differs from okay to very good depending on where you work (i know countries like sweden etc. have it even better) and compared to that nurses (sadly) get paid shit. another big difference is that because of the high demand for social workers here, most people start working directly after getting their bachelor's and then sometimes choose to do their masters after a few years of work experience. so, it really depends on the country you want to work in one day!
stumbled upon this trying to solidify my decision to pursue social work! i’m 24 now and have been through a few potential paths that i haven’t felt passionate about and watching your video and how you feel about helping people really helped me finally confirm this is what i want to do! thank you so much ❤️
Social workers do so much and are needed in every profession. I agree with what you’ve said. I think that social work is such a diverse profession. I noted that you only spoke about micro social work but why not macro social work?
hi! i don't know much about macro social work as I am not directly involved! perhaps a macro vs. micro social work video might be useful? i'll note for a future video!
Steph Bl great! I’m glad to hear that it worked out for you. I wanted to hear more conversation about macro practice, because there are not enough social workers talking about it on TH-cam. Social work is more than direct practice and working with Families , groups, and individuals. you can do policy, community organizing, advocacy work, manage an organization...etc. It’s such a flexible degree and I wish there were more social workers that expanded more on that on this platform. That being said I value hiyonnei insight to the profession. I think that in order to promote progressive policy that benefits marginalized groups, it’s valuable to hear the voices of social workers that are on the ground working with people that are impacted by the structures of the agency and punitive policy (because let’s be real, it’s bullshit that people have to take drug tests to get access to some social services or even mental health or drug treatment services.) When searching for macro work, I heard it was harder because social workers will look for jobs that don’t have social work in the title. It’s a flexible degree.
This video was super helpful! I work in nonprofit, but I sit at a desk all day and am not feeling fulfilled. So I am trying to decide if I want to go back to school for social work or education-both very important and under respected/underpaid but very different
Jacqueline Brogdon I’m in the exact same situation. My role in mental health for a not for profit has recently changed a lot due to it being less client facing and I’m stuck at my desk bored most days. I’m thinking of studying drug and alcohol work. Where are you located?
@@laurenwalker117 I currently live in Maine, and unfortunately there just aren't a lot of job opportunities, which would mean moving for grad school or another job
Where are you guys at now? Social work in big cities are loaded with clientele. It gets overwhelming and working for non profit sucks with pay, but it is rewarding. We do save lives. Sometimes on a slow day I feel like I didn’t do enough but then chaos comes shortly after and then I appreciate those slow couple of days. Lol
I'm a therapist. Used to work in community clinic serving the underserved population and chronic mentally ill clients, so I have to do social work too. I wear multiple hats and it seems that we are asked to do more and more. For how much therapists and social workers do, we're definitely underpaid. I enjoyed the friendships I built w/ colleagues who share the same passion as me and I have some wonderful memories w/ the clients I worked with. But as far as career advancement and pay, I had to move on after a few years. Getting licensed opened more doors for me and now I'm working in a medical setting where I get more pay and don't have to do social work. Then I learned that nurses earn so much more. No matter where, clinicians working in the mental health field are always underpaid. I hope there's a change because the area I live at has high living costs and we can't do our jobs if we can't catch up with living costs.
One thing I wish I had known was how infrequently I’d feel like I was truly helping. I work hard to be a friendly positive professional and I work with very vulnerable clients. But often it just feels like a slog, and talking to people - whether it’s a client or a member of the general public - about how they think a quick fix would solve everything just reminds me of how many enormous problems and barriers contribute to our clients problems that aren’t easy to solve, and there isn’t a great deal of public or political will to really change things. And depending on your employer, you often end up being the bad guy, or at least representing the bad guy to the clients. And when you try to skirt the rules to help the client, you have to keep looking over your shoulder to make sure your employer isn’t going to come after you. Part of the problem is perhaps that I moved cities and jobs - previously I was doing a lot more case management and now I’m mostly just doing front line basic needs day in and day out. Next month I’m starting a much better paid and very difficult to obtain government job, but I’m feeling so stressed and rattled about the last couple of years that I’m dreading it. It doesn’t help that it’s a department that is somewhat infamous for having not very nice employees. When I see young social workers and trainees who are so eager to say they just want to help people, I just want to caution them that the wins can be far and few between, and they won’t look like much to an outsider. And it’s really important to have as much of a life outside of work because If your work environment is really negative, it can really drain you. I have a bachelors degree, but not in social work - my social work credential is only a 2 year college program. I’ve considered upgrading my credentials, but I think now that if I do try to go back to school I definitely need to pursue a different field.
Thank you for taking the time to create this video and share your thoughts! I'm 27 right now and have just be accepted to university and want to go down either this route or psychology. It's daunting restarting as an adult, but I believe everything you've mentioned in your video are things that I want to have as everyday challenges. Videos like yours help reassure me (before I even begin) that going back to school is possible and "worth it".
i was having some doubts about going into the field and listening to your thoughts on it set me on fire for this field again and gave me hope. thank you
I am a B.A Psych grad who had plans of going straight to Grad school for Neuroscience, I had zero intentions of ever doing anything else. Through a series of events, I found myself not being able to afford grad school, just yet, and had to find work with my BA in psych. So I decided to complement my degree with a CASAC-T and have been doing case work in various mental health agencies. Although I'm glad for the experience and I don't really regret getting the added certification, I quickly realized that this field is so not for me. It's commendable, admirable, and sounds great on paper, but in my personal experience, workers in this field are some of the most dysfunctional people I've ever met (especially upper management). That, coupled with the work-life (im)balance, super low pay, and sitting behind a desk (for most of my work experience so far) drowning in paperwork while my ankles and my ass get fat, makes for a miserable career. There are pockets of satisfaction in the field, but not enough to keep me for the next like, three decades. I wish I felt the passion that you seem to, it would make all the difference. I'm in between jobs right now, but I'm so burnt out, I'm not even actively looking. Sorry for this wall of text, I hope someone out there feels the way I do and can relate.
I just had my last day of internship yesterday, my last class Monday, and I graduate next Friday. Seems like I wrote this comment forever ago and now I’m here. ☺️
With this type of work you can also think that you're finishing work at a certain time then get told you have to do a double shift because there's no one else to do it. It does bump up the pay but very mentally & physically taxing.
This has helped me sooooo much! I’ve researching social work a lot lately and I wanted an inside opinion from a real person not just a website and this was a the best video I found. Thanks so much! I was feeling discouraged with the rep that social work gets but you saying that you help people everyday is amazing and that’s exactly what I want to pursue.
Hi. I'm from Mexico and I'm studying to become a Social Worker. It's really interesting to find out the similarities between American and Mexican Social Workers. We really don't get paid a lot, and even working for the state in the social Institutions, we are paid less than 400 dollars a month. And the thing about nurses becoming unionized it's the same, they get paid really well here. I am confident that the we will gain the rights we are entitled to!
Thank you so much for the information provided. Probably most useful description of work I got til now. I studied social work in my home country and would really like to start working as one in UK. Currently I am a support worker as the position and work is closest to what I want to do. Thinking about change of career, but realized there is no other job I want to do.
I love how passionate you are about what you do. That is what I want. To feel passionate about my life and work. I stumbled across your video while I was doing a bit of research about social work because that is a field I have been interested in for about two years now. I think your video here has pushed me further into that direction of my career choice 😊
A social worker from China say hello. It’s great to see there are a lot of you make such videos to educate public about social work. But the situation is not that bad.Not like China, we not only pay in low (0.5K $per month)and at low social status.
Thank you so much there is a lot of negativity on social workers when it comes to jobs. I am working on my BSW right now and have been having some doubts about if I will be able to have a comfortable living salary after I get my MSW, this video was very encouraging. continue to fight the good fight
Thank you for this video. I think.you inspired me to continue what I always wanted to do: to serve others and help make change in the world by making it more peaceful. My mother was an ESL teacher her whole life and she became someone I had to take care of when she got ALS. She transitioned in 2017 and I went into some emotional difficulties for the second time in my life, but now I'm really dedicated to going back to school at Hunter College in Harlem.
I’m getting my bachelors in human services and I’m trying to become a social worker as well and I agree with wanting to have that satisfaction of helping people.
You just received a new subscriber! I started my MSW program last October and I am fairly new to the field. After a year and a half of soul searching, I decided to just go for it not knowing where exactly I would be working at the end. I found that what I was doing all my life was to make sure that they had that support I did not growing up. It makes me happy that I am able to help someone get on their feet. I hope to be more trained and experienced as you!
I appreciate your passion and dedication to the field of social work. I graduated with my MSW last year, and working toward taking my LMSW exam soon. I am an older adult, and trying to transition into this field. The bulk of my past work experience has been in office/admin. positions, so it's a little challenging to make the switch, but look forward to my first fulltime (paid) job in the social services field.
@@hi.yeonni I am also MSW , i want to work in Canada but the problem is I can speak English but not fluently that is the biggest problem I am facing, because in counselling it needs very effective communication between counselor and client please suggest!! Thank-you
I am studying social work in China university and want to be a social worker in the future. Our teachers always said the major of social work is a promising major, I believe it and have passion for it.thank you for your sharing!
Great Video! I am graduating with my BSW in May and I am SUPER excited! I love finding more social work youtubers. I made a channel myself to help others find their passion! Thank you for the great videos - I am subscribing!
Ooh yay hello fellow social worker! I feel your excitement!! Great "meeting" you! Best of luck with your studies and thank you for subscribing! Let me know if there are other videos you'd like to see!♥️
This is my first time coming across your channel, but I really appreciate how you talk about social work helping marginalised people and about the importance of unions. 🙌
I wanted to get a master's in social work, but now that I'm working as a caseworker for a nonprofit in Seattle, I'm realizing that is not what I want. High caseload, low pay and some clients can be very challenging to work with. I'm goung back to school, but will study something else.
Hello, so I am a Human Services major, but I want to go into medical administration, because I have always seen a social work model in healthcare to be so vital. The need to understand that healthcare is a service before it is a business is so vital in my eyes. So while I would love to run a hospital and maintain a healthy business model that gets everyone paid, the need for a more holistic model in the institutions these businesses are in, we take care of more than patients but also communities. I am also a big caregiver advocate and see them as the coworkers at home.
Social work is not a career, or a job, or something one does to while the day. Social work is a calling. You are a priest to those who need help. (Says an auditor and former chaplain, to be candid.) Thank you for your hard work!
I am becoming a social worker next year in Korea and I wanna marry you. You're my ideal type who is a social worker and has a warm heart and just mind. I got moved when you said in the video that you would say when you are ready to leave the earth, 'I have done good things'. Let's get married.♡
Wow I just found this video, I was looking around for more experience info on social work and you’ve really helped me put a good mindset to it. I knew I wanted to this this since I was 16 but I knew it was hard work so I’ve put it off until now thank you ❤️
I'm a psychology student and I love your channel so much. You seem like a very lovely person and I'm glad I found you. Tbh I honestly have no idea what I am going to do after I get my bachelors degree. I'm interested in social work but I'm also scared.
hi thank you for commenting! why do you feel scared? maybe i can help? but i can understand that the abyss of adulthood after acadamia can be intimidating!
Omg. Me too! Tho i dumped my chance to study in psycologhy from the beginning ;1st smt and i chose French Litterature till i got my bachelor. I dumped my dream that easy to persuit my dads dream which is to study in public univ. :(( ironicly now i wanting so bad to continue my study in multidiscipline area.. which is human studies. I want to be a social workers someday :-) srry for bad eng tho
hey! i just graduated with a b.a in psychology (+ sociology minor) and i’m starting my msw program in the fall. i specifically chose this route bc i want to be a licensed clinical social worker (lcsw). i always say that clinical psych felt too boring for me and i felt that clinical social work was a great medium where i could be more hands on and still incorporate my psych background. i highly suggest volunteering as much as you can to see if social work is a good fit for you. volunteering in a hospital really confirmed my decision to go the lcsw route. i know social work in general can be very hard work but for me, i see the rewards as more than worth it. ps. i love this video! :)
Thank you for this video. I found your channel while looking for Google Pixel reviews, but I stuck around because I'm interested in mental health. I'm in the process of college applications and I've been having trouble verbalizing my career goals because I'm ultimately undecided. However, after watching this video, I think that I may pursue a career in social work. Thank you for what you do for your society. You are lovely. :)
Hello Hiyeonni, I'm 27, didn't do anything at school 10 years back and took a 9 year break, I returned to school for 2 years now finishing my college with very good grades and want to study Social Work. Your video has motivated me so much to choose Social Work as a study but I'm really concerned because I don't have a job. I live in the Netherlands and even here it's not easy to find a permanent job in social work. I was wondering how long it took for you to get a job in social work where you live... I don't care about the pay, I just want to get a job very soon.... Take care and love your videos.
Thank you for being so transparent. I was thinking whether I should change my career and study social work as I want to help people. But I should think properly before plunging in. For helping I can volunteer also.❤️
I just put in my 2 weeks notice at my business development/sales job of 4 years to start applying to MSW programs. After hearing you and other cons I'm starting to doubt and second guess myself. I guess I just really see a need today with a lot of issues society is facing. The youth misinformed, addiction, aging population, mental health epidemic. But I don't know. For the last few years I probably dreaded going to work most days of the week. I want to help people but you're right, the realities must be taken into consideration. Sigh.. maybe I should become a teacher or something. I just need to shift careers. I know I'm interested in politics, advocacy, or social work. But I think I'm more interested in the non clinical work, but would MSW help with that? Anyways really appreciate this thoughtful video - it is a good dose of reality.
Hi there, MSW grad here and I have no intention of getting my license for clinical work. I would recommend looking into different MSW programs to see if there's more emphasis on macro level work (advocacy, organizations, management, research aspect) versus micro level (clinical). Though many programs got rid of the different tracks option in the program, there are different programs that have more opportunities for macro work, like D.C., Chicago, Richmond. From my own experience, I went to a program that didn't have an emphasis for either but my city has more opportunities for micro work. However, I work in case management with the intention of doing management. I also have become active in my city's board and political sessions, joined my neighborhood association, and volunteer. The great thing about the social work field is that we uplift one another and recognize each other's hearts and dedication to serve people. Stay close to your social work contacts after graduation as it helps. Hope this helps!
i had an exam and an interview yesterday for psychology but the teacher who was interviewing me suggested to me that social work is much fitter for my actions and words. Im very upset about because i didnt know what social work is since hs i always say that i'll take psychology to help people and to educate myself about mental health i want to learn more about but yeah i've come to realize social work can work with me hahaha maybe someday i'll again the psychology exam. Thankyou for this video it clears my mind a bit thinking about my future now is scary but yeah gonna get through it
thank you for your vid on here. i learn a lot about social worker here and knowing more about it. it because i want to help kids that have no way to escape from there abusive parents and making sure those kids get another chance in life into becoming something great and to me that my joy i want as a social worker.:)
I have worked in social work for 7 years and I moved up to a pay that’s the same as a someone with a degree but I have to work way harder then a person with a degree to make that money so at 30 I’m going back to school so that I can not have to work my life away just to make it.
I intend to be a social worker, I will be going to college soon for a general degree in my first 2 years, then transferring to get a social work degree. Right now, I am considering whether or not I should get a bachelors or masters. It's a very personal thing for me, because my past links with this strongly, and I want to make a difference in children's lives not only in their home, but making sure all kids in foster homes aren't mistreated. What do you think I should do when it comes to my degree to make a difference?
Do your masters ! I’m starting on my first year of college to get my masters ! I start on the 24th of this month. I’ve been in foster care and I think I went through everything so I can relate to anyone who needs help and become someone they can count on ! We can do it !!!
I dont know what I wanna do as work in future, but I like people and helping them. I follow a study in the Netherlands as a Dutch 17 year old man, im tall😂. We earn 50k each year. I can live with it, perhaps I grow more in it and earn more money to start business or something to grow as an individual.
Can you please do a video on all the steps you took to become a Social Worker? Like the things you did the moment you graduated from HIgh-School? PLease?
Cynthia Ortiz you have to apply to a college or a community college (then transfer to university/college). You could really major in anything but I know most major in sociology or in social work. Then you have to apply to a masters program.
Cynthia Ortiz it depends where you live. Best way to found out now is too google schools near your area. You can look up the requirements. Ask your high school counselors and college advisors for more info
YAYY NEW VID!! I've been wanting to ask how to deal with mental health stigma. I feel like you're very poised and well spoken. If I or a friend has a mental illness and someone either makes fun of it or says since they do not have a mental illness they are better what is the appropriate way to respond such that you look like you have taken control of your mental health and are functioning normally . . . Snapping I feel could lead to the person confirming that you or the friend are 'insane' or 'crazy.'
hi there, thank you for your kind words! firs of all, i can agree that wanting to snap at such insensitive comments can feel natural! perhaps a way to verbalize your feelings is to let them know that yes, you may have a mental illness, but that doesn't make you any different than any other human. no one is perfect, that person isn't either, and there is no reason to spread hate or negativity. a short way of saying such a thing could be, "dude, it's none of your business. MH is a very personal matter to people, no need to pry". at the end of the day, people will say what they want to say and it really is up to you to decide if it is even worth it to try to explain to people who will label you negative things just because of their own issues. people will talk, don't let it affect you! and if it is a genuinely confused person, then just approach them from a kind, educational perspective :) best of luck!
Guess what? If you think you're insane or crazy then it just proves that you aren't! Crazy people do not know that they are crazy. I work with people with Developmental disabilities and I'm also a college student with a human services major that is thinking of pursuing a career in social work. Sometimes you just meet people who want to bully you and just get under your skin because messing with others makes them feel good about themselves. Most of the individuals I work with aren't very high functioning but nonetheless they do have feelings and they do understand what people are saying to them. What I do is talk to them to let them know that they are just as human as I am. I try to make them feel as normal as possible. Some of my guys understand that they aren't normal but they know that they have staff here that care about them and they know that they can talk to us about anything. Feel free to ask any questions if necessary
Thank you so much for this video and I'm excited to watch more on this topic on this and other channels. I'm thinking social work may just be an incredible career fit for me, drawing on many of my strengths, gifts, experiences, passions. This video was really touching, the part about how fulfilling it is to help people. I really want to help people more and also empower myself more financially. 🌟💗🌟
I’m a high school senior look at studying social work in university, I feel I want my focus to be on men’s health and support as well as lgbt support in rural areas. I’m also Australian, do you have any thoughts/ advice/ insight on this. Thanks Nic
I need to start writing my UCAS personal statement and I'm really struggling on which to pick social worker or law. I think I'm going to pick social worker because iv always wanted to save someone life and get them to live their life... I might more to australia or California for the money thou so I could live the lavish life iv always dreamed of and making a big difference to some less fortunate
Social work and law do intertwine quite a lot so I understand it's a difficult decision! It's all about figuring out what are your priorities! Best of luck!✨
You're adorable! Thank you for talking about the realities of social work. I'm looking into different MSW options. I just found your channel and took a quick peek. I feel like we would connect on so many topics! I'm a fan already! 🙏🧡Sending much love from Montreal, Canada xx
This was a very helpful video thank you. Im very interested in working with children that come from bad homes or bad situations as that's what I came from and overcame it. I feel like my story can help make a difference. Im very empathetic and want to help so bad. I know there's kids that need help and I want to try and be there for them! I really hope I can see this trough and make this work. thank you for your video.

The good feeling that you get from helping others is priceless. However, we really need to advocate for ourselves for better pay. As important as my work is, many of my friends whom I grew up with, many of whom don't have an undergraduate or graduate degree like myself, make far more money than I do. I love sports, but there's something wrong when you can be good at hitting a baseball, or knocking someone out in boxing and make tons more all of us, who are social workers, and are literally helping to save the lives of people whom we serve.
advocacy is definitely needed! Thank you for watching and for commenting ✨
PAssion is what keeps us social workers strong when we face adversity and burn out!
same. good luck!
sarah you too!! maybe we’ll meet again haha
me too! Although I am a senior and high school but, I'm not sure what degree and stuff to get and I have no one to help me but google lol
I knew social work was for me when I was 16 also❤️ best of luck to you
I dont care about the money I just want to save other people life.

@@richn.5760 Social workers are very much needed and like a stated earlier not everyone values money smh
@@william2154 hy man. What do you think a diploma is social work will do? In Ontario
Social workers, like nurses are predominantly female and unfortunately, this is one of, if not the main reason social workers are paid so little in comparison to other professions. It’s time social workers stand up against the inequalities they endure because of their gender and fight for equal rights, as nurses have accomplished to do!
What bs wow
Lets start the conversation. How do we become unionized like the nurses? I know many social workers who are great advocators for others. But, I think as social workers we tend to forget to advocate for ourselves. So, lets do it!
Just sleep with supervispr

And NASW does absolutely nothing.
Rapmajor this is one of the major complaints about NASW. There was a time when NASW advocated for the social worker. Now it seems to advocate for the client which is not what a professional organization is supposed to do!
I very much admire social workers. Keep doing what you're doing, and keep educating people. I hope one day they aren't overworked and underpaid.
Wrong , all they care about is the money.
@Pedro Dooley Agreed. It's so sad and frustrating but that's what today's society is all about now ig. :/
The NASW doesn’t do enough to advocate for better pay.
Aaaaaaaaamennnnnn!

It's funny how we spend our whole careers advocating for others, and yet have neglected to also advocate for ourselves. I hope we will unionize and demand better working conditions so we can be better equipped to serve our clients!
As a Social Worker for almost 8 years you described it perfectly. Thank you ❤
I’m fighting major depression,, I never understood what you did. I love and respect what you do, I wouldn’t be here today! ❤️❤️❤️ thank you
Interesting video 🙂 Here in California, and specifically the San Francisco Bay Area, pay depends on several things.
I’m studying psychology in college and thinking about social work as my masters agree.
Good look to you!
it's so interesting to watch your videos from a different continental view. i study social work in germany and here social worker unions are p big. the salary differs from okay to very good depending on where you work (i know countries like sweden etc. have it even better) and compared to that nurses (sadly) get paid shit. another big difference is that because of the high demand for social workers here, most people start working directly after getting their bachelor's and then sometimes choose to do their masters after a few years of work experience. so, it really depends on the country you want to work in one day!
this is so fascinating!! thank you so much for the insight!
Really? Can I ask you some questions? I'm also from Germany :)
stumbled upon this trying to solidify my decision to pursue social work! i’m 24 now and have been through a few potential paths that i haven’t felt passionate about and watching your video and how you feel about helping people really helped me finally confirm this is what i want to do! thank you so much ❤️
Ahhh my heart! This makes me so happy! The road definitely isn’t a perfectly paved one, but one that definitely feels to me is worth it
Social workers do so much and are needed in every profession. I agree with what you’ve said. I think that social work is such a diverse profession. I noted that you only spoke about micro social work but why not macro social work?
hi! i don't know much about macro social work as I am not directly involved! perhaps a macro vs. micro social work video might be useful? i'll note for a future video!
hiyeonni thank you for the response. I appreciate it.
I’m a social worker wanted to get a job to become a macro level employee but that didn’t happen! I like what I am doing right now!
I think that in order to promote progressive policy that benefits marginalized groups, it’s valuable to hear the voices of social workers that are on the ground working with people that are impacted by the structures of the agency and punitive policy (because let’s be real, it’s bullshit that people have to take drug tests to get access to some social services or even mental health or drug treatment services.)
When searching for macro work, I heard it was harder because social workers will look for jobs that don’t have social work in the title.
Wow how’s it been now ?
Thank you for taking the time to create this video and share your thoughts! I'm 27 right now and have just be accepted to university and want to go down either this route or psychology.

So while I would love to run a hospital and maintain a healthy business model that gets everyone paid, the need for a more holistic model in the institutions these businesses are in, we take care of more than patients but also communities. I am also a big caregiver advocate and see them as the coworkers at home.
i’m going for social work right now, thank you for this video. your awesome :)
Yay! Best of luck and YOU’RE awesome for dedicating your life to helping others. Thank YOU.
Happy Social Work Month to all Social Workers ❤️❤️
I knew I wanted to this this since I was 16 but I knew it was hard work so I’ve put it off until now thank you ❤️
Dont think too much dear if your heart desires to make a next human life better...go for it....who knows where you'll end up....God bless
I’m watch this video as my career project but I’m actually interested now
That's so awesome to hear! Good luck on your project!
I'm on my second year of study bsw (New Zealand) and I love everything about it. Great vid!
What about the salary range of a social worker in New Zealand?? Could you please explain..
I am a junior in the program in Indiana! I love the program as well :)
Will be leaving social work soon, if I don’t my health will break completely. 35 years old and there is more to life
Thank you for this video. :)
Hi Kat I deeply apologise for the late response, but I'm so so glad you found my video helpful! Best of luck with applications, you got this ♥️
Hello Hiyeonni, I'm 27, didn't do anything at school 10 years back and took a 9 year break, I returned to school for 2 years now finishing my college with very good grades and want to study Social Work.
Thankyou for this video it clears my mind a bit thinking about my future now is scary but yeah gonna get through it
Great video, helped me a lot with my next step in life and decision about MSW degree. Thank you and all the best to you in your life and career!
thank you for your vid on here. i learn a lot about social worker here and knowing more about it. it because i want to help kids that have no way to escape from there abusive parents and making sure those kids get another chance in life into becoming something great and to me that my joy i want as a social worker.:)
I have worked in social work for 7 years and I moved up to a pay that’s the same as a someone with a degree but I have to work way harder then a person with a degree to make that money so at 30 I’m going back to school so that I can not have to work my life away just to make it.
Social Work Student here from Philippines. Soon to be Registered social worker (Crossfingers)
Omg, which school po? I'm interested.
Taguig City University po.
@@laarniefernandez6715 ohh, thank you! Good luck on your journey!
Thank you for your video♡ I'm starting school for social worker. "Everyday super heroes" 💖
This video made me choose my future career.
A Master Degree will definitely help you in the long run. More Door's open too.
Do your masters ! I’m starting on my first year of college to get my masters ! I start on the 24th of this month. I’ve been in foster care and I think I went through everything so I can relate to anyone who needs help and become someone they can count on ! We can do it !!!
@@lauramartinez1043 Hi im still very far from college, but i'd like to ask, how much years in college does it take for your masters?
I dont know what I wanna do as work in future, but I like people and helping them. I follow a study in the Netherlands as a Dutch 17 year old man, im tall😂. We earn 50k each year. I can live with it, perhaps I grow more in it and earn more money to start business or something to grow as an individual.
Hello! Thank you for this video ♥️ I'm a 2nd year Social Work student.
of course! best of luck with school, i actually miss it so much haha
@@hi.yeonni Thank you Ma'am! Became more motivated to strive hard with my course after I found this channel and watched all the videos. 😊♥️
@@megandia1510 WHAT MASTERS PROGRAM?
WOULD THAT MEAN YOU WOULD HAVE TO MOVE SCHOOLS OR WOULD THE PROGRAM BE IN THAT SCHOOL?
Cynthia Ortiz it depends where you live. Best way to found out now is too google schools near your area. You can look up the requirements. Ask your high school counselors and college advisors for more info
Disclaimer you have to do 6 years of schooling to become a social worker
@@megandia1510 I live in San Diego
If you were to do some research for me that would be amazing Thanks!
Im social worker 🤗

Feel free to ask any questions if necessary
i honestly dont want the money i just want to help people 🥺
Thank you so much for this video and I'm excited to watch more on this topic on this and other channels. I'm thinking social work may just be an incredible career fit for me, drawing on many of my strengths, gifts, experiences, passions. This video was really touching, the part about how fulfilling it is to help people. I really want to help people more and also empower myself more financially. 🌟💗🌟
Social workers should take the same approach that nurses took back in the day
I’m a high school senior look at studying social work in university, I feel I want my focus to be on men’s health and support as well as lgbt support in rural areas. I’m also Australian, do you have any thoughts/ advice/ insight on this. Thanks
Nic
Thank you for this vedio, it gives me mogovation to pursue my dream as a social work
I need to start writing my UCAS personal statement and I'm really struggling on which to pick social worker or law.
