Sega's answer to Operation Thunderbolt, I never actually saw Line of Fire in any of the arcades I visited back then, but adverts for the home conversions were plastered throughout the C64 and Amiga magazines I bought.
There's really nothing complicated about this: shoot absolutely everything before it can shoot you you. Because you're in control of a vehicle-mounted machinegun there's no ammo to worry about, you can spray the screen as liberally as you like, but the key to success is knowing where enemies are going to pop and and hose them down before they can inflict too much damage.
This is actually where LoF differs to other games. You will take damage because there's simply far too many enemies not to, so the game becomes about minimising it, and taking full advantage of med packs when they appear. Shooting these boxes restore a reasonable portion of your health, and there are even cargo planes which drop them when shot; sometimes it's better to focus on shooting the plane and harvesting kits and ignoring the bad guys, since you may end up with net positive health.
Visually, Sega's sprite scaling tech is in full effect. The game uses the same X Board hardware which powered After Burner, with smooth scrolling and gigantic sprites. Multiple sprites are stacked and offset to give the illusion of parallax, such as the chinook helicopter, which is really quite a convincing 3D effect for the time.
Overall, Line of Fire is pretty good fun. I don't think it's as iconic as Operation Wolf, but it has Sega's trademark production values and fancy visuals, so definitely give the game a shot.

Gosh, they found you. I love Sega's arcade games so much. The scaling effects are nifty!

Their escape path consists of running through the most heavily armed and occupied areas of the enemy base

A pretty awesome gun game for its time, and still really cool even now.

Jet fighters -> cargo plane -> helicopters -> submarine
I like how the plane getaway level has them throwing slower and slower things to catch up to you.

It's like Jackal on the NES, except it's FPS. Great run and thanks for posting!

Certainly a good title to visually analyze Sega's sprite scaling, with the slow, reverse (Jeep-driving) sections showing the sprites pop up full-sized and slowly shrink. Also, the awkward handling of lateral turns while scaling (simultaneously with 2-layer/parallax rock walls) , and the obvious trouble synchronizing the perspective of large, multilayered objects (e.g. trains on tracks, tarps covering missiles on launcher trucks), give interesting insight into how troublesome the math must've been on designers! Don't know if it's just my connection, but this one seems to be running at only 30fps (like earlier OutRun hardware), despite that it's using the same X-board that ran Afterburner at 60fps.

Looking back at the footage, I think the game/screen update is locked to 30 FPS; it's not smooth enough for 60 FPS.

@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays So you think the game on original arcade hardware ran at only 30fps?

@@NB-1 Afterburner, on same hardware, seemed like it had as much or more going on, with the ground made up of so many rows of overlapping scaling sprites, plus the rotation , and all the planes & explosions scaling too, at 60fps...

That driver must have really hated his posting as the intermission scenes basically have him actively facilitating the escape. Granted, before the player breaks in he was already held at gun point.

Kinda late use of the (then) already outdated X Board. Probably to clear out remaining inventory, as common with many Japanese arcade divisions. Companies like Namco or Taito did the same.

Upon first seeing this, my initial reaction was that the game was from Taito, since the manner in which the walls and scenery animate is almost identical to Space Gun. Looks like this game is a blast! (pun intended)

SEGA and Taito games used very distinctive and recognizable palettes. This is unmistakably SEGA due to the saturated colors. 😄

Hmmm...graphics seem a tad behind the times. It looks about on par with Operation Thunderbolt, which had been released the previous year. Beast Busters looked a lot better and was released the same year.
(trivia: according to one source, Michael Jackson took a copy of Beast Busters on a cargo plane whenever he toured)

I played the Amiga port of this back when and I really wanted to like it. Too bad it had so low framerate, even with all the dowgrades, it was almost unplayable at times. This one looks solid though but looks like co-op is heavily encouraged.

Three guys in a jeep annihilate the entire country's army, they like won the war in just 20 minutes. And as a reward they get an order. Damn, I can't imagine what it takes in this army to get a promotion! Great run, enjoyed it a lot!
