  • If you’ve been to a Bed Bath and Beyond or any drug store really, you’ve probably seen Plug N Play consoles that look like these. They usually feature a couple games at a low price. These things usually get a bad rep, because they’re cheaply made, the emulation is poor, and they usually feature the NES versions of games. But are all of these Plug N Play consoles bad, or are there some decent ones out there?

The Bosconian one has a 4 way limiter around the joystick that can be easily modified to give it diagonal movement. It's programmed for it, but that little plastic piece physically prevents it.

I came here to say this. I picked up the Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man 5-in-1s after watching this and the plug-n-play video from the 8-Bit Guy, and while opening them to clean them I noticed the 4-way limiter. Whomever did this port of Bosconian may not have had anything to do with what joysticks would be used, or Jakks may have thought that Pac-Man would be the main draw and the 4-way limiter would make Pac-Man easier to work with without thinking about diagonals in Bosconian.

9:14. That's actually explained in the show. Plankton has his own burger chain. Where he cooks and tops his burgers exactly like Mr. Krabs does, but his burgers are nowhere near as good. So there must be some kind of secret ingredient or method or preparation that Plankton wants to know so he can make his burgers just like Krabby Patties.

I have a couple dozen or so Plug N Play games, including the ones in this video. It started out innocently enough - finding one for a couple of dollars at a flea market etc. Before I knew it I had a few boxes of them. I even bought a few brand new at K-Mart and pharmacies over the years. They are pretty cool gizmos and are great to drag out once in a while for a quick game.

Fun fact about the Ms. Pac-Man Plug n' Play: there are 2 versions that were released. The first one had an interesting glitch in Pole Position that allows you to switch from high to low and back to high gear while still being able to make the sharp turn when you pass the Mappy sign. Another small difference is that when you select a game there's no sound effect when you confirm the game you play but only for when you're scrolling through the games. Only way to know if you got the first or second revision is by looking at the menu and if there's a sticker on the back. If there's a sticker on the back, the games in the main menu is shaped like a shield, and if you see a cartridge slot for game keys then you have the second revision. If there's no sticker and if the games are listed vertically you got the first revision.

I have a collection of these things. Some of the older ones by Jakks are actually very well done and use microswitches for the joysticks. There is a neat Star Wars one that is shaped like a flight yoke and uses motion controls that you use to pilot the Falcon. Another one has Pole Position and the joystick twists to allow you to steer the car more naturally. Unfortunately, the older ones use A/V connectors that modern televisions don't include anymore so an adapter is necessary for them.

Bosconian was always one of my favorite games at the arcade (back in the early/mid '80s). Funny thing is, every version I have ever played crashes on a certain level --including the arcade cabinet itself. When I discovered MAME in the late '90s that was one of the first things I started playing again and lo and behold the game still crashed on the same level. How's that for proof of the original rom being used!

@@idogaming3532 LOL. I know why you're asking that, but no. It was like level 12 or 19 or so... It's a great game to play, put it always glitched and the arcade cabinet rebooted once you destroyed x number of bases on that particular level. This happened on more than one cabinet, and then when I played it on the MAME from a ROM dump too.

I have the 12 in one Plug and Play. It's kind of generic, but it plays all 12 games exactly as they were in the arcades. Love the "Twist action" for Pole Position that gives it a neat steering ability. FYI, these little machines are a GREAT replacement in the Arcade 1UP machines!! eBay and other places sell a "blank" control panel that you can add two buttons and create a custom setup to hack your plug and play. As for the monitor? You can buy a simple card that lets you run HDMI to the monitor, and a simple composite to HDMI interface box that lets the Composite AV cable display on the screen. A mono audio jack and small amp will give you great sound that is volume controlled. And you can have a Pac Man Party Arcade for FAR cheaper than the machine Namco sells!

I also have a small collection of these plug n' play consoles with all the ones you've shown here, and while yes I agree the Spongebob one was a bit too easy for myself to play, and could have used some more music, we do have to remember the target audience of it was younger kids so cranking up the difficulty would have been a bad idea, as you want them to have a good time, for example I've let my great nephew who about to turn 5 play the Spongebob one, and it was just the right difficulty to give him a challenge, but not so hard he got frustrated, and wanted to quit in 5 minutes.
Also the Ms. Pacman one is spot on of the best Plug N' Plays out there, and if yo ever do a round 2 of these make sure to look at the Pacman Plug N' Play that looks like a sprite of his head, as it has so many good versions of Pacman on there, and 2 Golden Tee Golf games with trackballs are fun as well at family parties if you have any family that likes golf.
Lastly the worse things I can say about being a Plug N' Play collector is don't leave the batteries in them when not in use, take care of the hardwired cords, as I've had to resolder about 1/2 the ones in my collection I've found while out on thrift hunt for dodge connections, they look so much better on a CRT TV than blown up on a big flat panel, and avoid the newer ones with the fat white top joysticks from MSI Entertainment that were dumped in places like Aldi a couple year ago with titles like WWE Steelcage Challenge, Megaman, etc.. unless you just want some nice pieces to fill out a shelf for the artwork, as they are pisspore NES/Game Gear ports, and the joysticks feel like the could snap on you with mushy buttons.

The Jakks Pacific Atari Paddle plug 'n play is also extremely good. It's a set of two paddles with 2600 and arcade versions of paddle games. What makes this plug 'n play so good is the fact that the paddles here are extremely responsible and feel actually higher quality than real Atari 2600 paddles. Demons to Diamonds is great fun on this thing. Just too bad it doesn't have Kaboom.

The blue NAMCO mrs. Pac Man plug'n play was the first video game I ever played, I think it was in 2004-2005 when I was 2-3 years old. I remember my mom buying one and hooking it up to our 12'' RCA livingroom TV. My mom was very poor, she had to get rent voutures from the state and WIC. I remember only being able to pick up FOX 4, and even then half the time it was so weak the color would disappear. My favorite one though is the NAMCO 5 in 1, when I was 10 we got one at a goodwill and I loved Bosconian and DigDug. To this day I still love plug'n plays, and if I find one I buy it. Another one I have fond memories of is the Atari Joystick, in 2013 my dad actually burned one out playing the same Asteroids game for like 6 hours straight. He was born in 1970, and when he was a kid he was the best player in his county. He was so good, in fact that he would have to set a time limit on himself when he was in the arcade so other people would have a chance to play.

I especially loved playing Eliminator, Tower Toppler, and Jumpman Junior on that Plug n Play

Commodore 64 was a home computer from back in the 1980s. It was the last product the company produced under Jack Tramiel's rule (before he was ousted from Commodore and bought the consumer electronics half of Atari when Warner was liquidating that company).
Despite being an American product, it was more popular in Europe (especially in The UK, West Germany, and Italy). Or as Jack himself put it, it was a product meant to be sold to the masses and not to the classes.
It lasted on the market from 1982 until its discontinuation in 1994 (the same year Commodore International closed).
If you ever watch the music video for Only You by Savage (really obscure Italo Disco Musician from the 1980s), the Commodore 64 makes an appearance in that video as a couple use it to get married. It's cheesy but epic

I've had quite a few consoles over the years, but I've also gotten a few plug and play here and there. My first was called the "Power Player 128" where the main unit was shaped similar to a Sega Dreamcast controller and had a connector on the bottom to plug in either a 2nd more basic gamepad or a small dark brown light gun. The 128 was a reference to the 128 games built-in which were mostly american NES games and even had a 60-pin Famicom port on the top.

I remember having almost every Namco Jakks Plug n Play along with their Power Rangers and Star Wars ones growing up. My favorite Namco joystick has to be their 2008-ish revision of the Pac-Man joystick. This revision included all the games from the previous Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Super Pac-Man joysticks (with Ms. Pac-Man omitted, of course). All the games were updated to make them more arcade accurate, but Bosconian still has 4-way joystick controls.

if you take a knife to the joystick restrictor plate on the first Namco/Jakks system, and carefully widdle away at the plate so that it's an 8-way joystick instead of 4-way, you can play Bosconian with diagonal movement, it's not so much of a coding error as it is a manufacturing error. Also points to this version of Bosconian for not including the wretched voice samples of the arcade version.

Bosconian is not misleading though, in the actual arcade version you could move diagonally as well but the version you play on the plug and play doesn't had rotary joystick (similar to Ikari Warriors) so without it you can't rotate and go diagonal. You need the rotary joystick to use diagonal movements. This is why some of those plug and plays are shitty cause they are missing features like that.

It's widely believed that the company that actually _developed_ the NES-ified Atari games, (and some Intelivision ones since there was an Intelevision plug-and-play that used the same NESOAC design), was Nice Code, a Chinese developer that typically developed bootleg games. Imagine, a bootleg dev actually being contracted to make official ports of Atari and Intelevision games to NES!
And of course, after they did the work, they went back to their bootlegging ways and made hacked versions of their own ports to release on other multicart and clone systems. Saboteur for example would be hacked to make at least *NINE* variants! One of them being based off Spider-Man! Might be worth looking into on a future episode.

To my memory, the reason why Plankton wants the secret formula is cuz of a childhood grudge he's had with Mr. Krabs about starting a business. Their old recipe was made of chum and nothing else, but by form of a fluke, a whole rack's worth of spices fell into the concoction after Plankton left the picture, giving the patties a more appetizing flavor. Because that's all he had, Plankton literally uses the chum that he and Eugene started with and tries to make meals out of it, while Krabs, by form of a literal bout of collateral damage, managed to create the biggest and most popular food item in Bikini Bottom
That's from the episode Friend or Foe

I do not get why POJR is not way more popular his content is well produced and edited. If GameSack, SegaLordX and (cringe) Top Hat Gaming man and his Jackal of a wife can get views and subs POJR should be way higher regarded. Well anyway I love and appreciate the content, and who doesn’t love that big smile that starts every episode. Just keep plugging POJR you’ll get there

I don't know who made it, but I remember seeing a Pac Man plug and play with a theme centered around level 256. It's crowning feature was a button that starts you on level 256 if you just want to see the split screen.
I wish I'd bought it...I've never seen it since.

I have a pacman plug and play that has a variant of pacman that sends you to level 256.

I bought one of those once. It had Gauntlet and the stick also felt so flimsy and cheap that I didn't really play it. Felt like it would snap easily.

Hey Pojr, on the Ms. Pac Man, do you any idea what the Game Key port on the back is?

    • @pojr
      @pojr  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The batteries actually go in the back rather than the bottom. If that's what you're referring to

Actually- it does have the theme song! Though, it seems to have been included only on certain versions of the unit. If you have one that has the theme song, consider yourself lucky as it is pretty uncommon to come across. Anyways, here’s the proof!

I STILL wanna get my hands on the MK1 one they made. I saw some videos of it and it isnt a console or arcade port. They likely did it themselves and it seems better than both 16bit versions back then. I also own the BLACK version of the last collection of this video

That Atari 10 in 1, the ROM has been dumped, and can be played on an NES emulator. I also have the unit itself, picked it up at a yard sale years ago, and enjoyed it.

I can tell you that the Ms Pac Man runs too fast. I can't play it's first level: I'm used to the orig. "slow" version form Mame. I remember seeing a video on it that argued that it doesn't have the orig. ROM in it but it's a very cleaver remake of some sorts. The joystick is nice though. And the twisting stick is quite good for the analog precise steering in Pole Position. It's hard to configure the analog part of PP in Mame because my joystick (Xbox) has analog sticks, but they do not twist (they're sticks).

These plug and play controllers always bugged me as to why they always had the buttons on the left of the stick, rather than the right like console and PC controllers.
Really annoying for me as I'm left handed. at least have the buttons on both sides.

    • @pojr
      @pojr  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

i didn't comment on this in the video, but im also left handed and i had to hold the controller in an awkward way in order to play these games.

@@pojr Ah, a fellow south paw :D Yeah, I have to reach around with my right hand to get to the buttons, I used to hold Atari 2600 controllers sideways as a kid to make them more comfortable.
I would be curious why Jakks always did that.

While I thought about getting one of these back when they were new, I never did since I already had mame. Why play a crappy port when you can play the emulated hardware with an arcade controller? Plus you can flip vertical games by turning your monitor.
While there was a market for these, they weren't for me.
