    Kikuchiyo's speech is one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. It helps for context to have some knowledge of the Sengoku Jidai period of Japan

      Mifune just goes for it in that scene. I used to show that scene to people and say "See that? That's fucking ACTING!!!!" Such an amazing onscreen presence and such an expressive face. He is amazing in Drunken Angel too, as well as pretty much all of his other movie roles. Drunken Angel is special because it is his first role with Kurosawa. Also has what I think is one of the most realistic fight scenes ever in it.

    I enjoy the subtext of Kikuchiyo lying about being a samurai, but willing to risk his life for the village regardless. It demonstrates that the spirit of a samurai is derived not from the title, but from the spirit to do what is right -- even in the face of overwhelming adversity.

    One of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. Thank you for reviewing this. I hope others can get past the point it's subtitled and in black & white and enjoy the movie.

      True that. I first saw this in like 1967 =:-O ... On every viewing I become completely immersed, I don't even notice I'm reading the titles. Dubbing would not improve this movie.

    • @chauncymcbaddass
      @chauncymcbaddass ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@inyobill I agree, I think dubbing would ruin it. I saw this movie first in 1996 and since then have recommended it to so many people and I have only had one person actually watch it after I recommended it. Most folks can't get past the fact that it is in black and white, it's 2 and a half hours and subtitled. I even have multiple copies first on VHS then on DVD so I could loan them out. Always got them back with a "Sorry I didn't get time to watch it" Which is a shame because it is my favorite movie of all time. Oh and the one guy I did convince to watch it got a tattoo of the samurais banner from the movie, so I think he liked it.

    Funny how the biggest and burliest of the samurai, Kikuchiyo, chose a girl's name at random from the scroll.
    That's right, Kikuchiyo is a girl's name. That's why Kambei was laughing so hard.

    • @070272kt
      @070272kt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Kikuchiyo is not always a girl.
      In medieval Japan, boys had girls' names.
      It resembles the habit of boys pretending to be girls in medieval Europe.

    • @Uncle_Baby_Billy

    I agree on where you said this film is the technical masterpiece, but I don't really know whether a dude was such a philosophical on the subject or not. One thing I can tell is that he might've enjoyed duplicating the western through the filter of eastern culture though. Just for your geeky enjoyment, have you notice there is dry weed tumbling, often seen in the western, across a street of old Japanese village when the dual between Sanjuro & Unosuke is about taken place in "Yojimbo".

    My favourite film pretty consistently since I first saw it 55 some years ago. I am lured away from time to time by something new and shiny but 'new and shiny' is rarely more than a passing fad. A great film, and the fact that it feels like half the length of the first Pirates Of The Caribbean film says it all.
    ps - please don't worry. No Pirates... film has been near my top 100 never mind higher :)

    Kikuchiyo's argument about the samurai not only refers to the warrior class at that time but also the one who defeated Japan during World War 2: the U.S.A. who is now the world's police force (kind of like the samurai at that time). The farmers who became animals because of the samurais' wars are the victims of the war caused by the U.S., whether through colonization or just invasion.

    To me Shichinin no Samurai is the greatest film ever made. Every time I hear some wonk claim that Citizen Kane is the greatest I sneer a bit. Tell me the truth.. can you today sit and watch Kane from first to last? Truth. It's boring. Every thing Kurosawa did is insanely brilliant but the 7 is his masterpiece. Shimada Kambei defines the martial spirit better than any character I've ever experienced. You of course will think what you think but to me, as I said, this is the greatest film ever made.
