    I remember not liking Yojimbo and Sanjuro as much as Seven Samurai, but a lot of times i catch myself remembering cool things from those movies, i need to watch them again, they look so cool, stylish, and artful.

    All these scenes from Toshiro Mifune, and you not even mentioned him... Kurosawa, knew that you do not direct Mifune, you only point, he will make his acting were it need to be... These have a long standing colaboration that made both men a legend in their own time...

    I've never seen any Kurosawa films until last Wednesday, where I saw Throne of Blood for the very first time. It was really good.

      Toshiro Mifune is a great actor, and he's in a lot of Kurosawa films. I have a section in my DVD library that is just samurai movies. There's a lot of great ones out there.

    Reason he chose Kuwabatake in sequel Sanjuro is because the character is growing.

    Fantastic analysis!!! Yojimbo is one of my favorite films of all time!! I wrote an entire essay on this film in college because this film was so impactful to me. Besides Seven Samurai, this is my favorite Kurosawa film. What aspect of Yojimbo strikes you the most Leon?

    Sanjuro was simply applying the art of war technic. Moral ambiguity has nothing to do with it. He freed the town from both gangs.

    Takeshi Miike even did a version of this called Sukiyaki Western Django (and it has a cameo from Quentin Tarantino). I can't afford to support anyone on Patreon (I have a roof to maintain myself) but may I suggest two Japanese films, Fires on the Plain and Hari-kiri (not the Miike remake although he did a great job with it).

    It's ironic that the makers of Yojimbo were so protective of their story rights when suing "Fistful of Dollars" -- considering that the original film itself was an unofficial adaptation of Dash Hammet's Red Harvest -- a story of a hard-boiled detective who turns two gangs against one another by joining first one side, then the other.
    So in a strange sort of way, the movie sort of went full circle -- from American gangster story to Japanese Samurai drama to Spaghetti western -- and then back to American gangster story -- and yet, strangely enough, there's never been an actual adaption of the original (and really great) Hammet novel.

    Actually, Yojimbo is based on Dasheill Hammett's book Red Harvest.

    • @nmarbletoe8210
      @nmarbletoe8210 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      fascinating.
      .
      "Akira Kurosawa scholar David Desser and critic Manny Farber, among others, state that Red Harvest was the inspiration for Kurosawa's film Yojimbo. Other scholars, such as Donald Richie, believe the similarities are coincidental.[7] Kurosawa said that a major source for the plot was the film noir classic The Glass Key (1942), an adaption of Hammett's 1931 novel of the same name. In Red Harvest, The Glass Key, and Yojimbo, corrupt officials and businessmen stand behind and profit from the rule of gangsters."
