      30 years!?! Wow, that is a long break. Welcome back to the leaf. I'm glad you're able to gain something from my content. My intent was to start a channel so that newer smokers like myself have a frame of reference for what they are experiencing. Obviously, every journey is different, but I think it is helpful to have someone that is more or less around the same experience level to bounce ideas off of and compare notes with. Thanks for stopping by and saying hello. I hope to see you around. Cheers, Andy.

    My experience is that any tobacco smoked for 2,5 hrs or let’s say 2-3 bowl smoked in chain would give a sour throat and tongue bite.

    • @Piper_Andy

      Yes! I've learned that just because you can fit that much tobacco in the bowl, doesn't mean you should. Thanks for your comment. Cheers, Andy.

    Nice - Kilkerran 8 and Caldonia. I'm 1 month into pipes, after a couple of years with cigars. Roma 673KS arriving in the mail today. Great review! Favs so far... Mac Baren Scottish Blend (2022), Capstan Gold (2024) and Latakia Flake (2022).

      Always nice to meet someone that knows their scotch! I'm about 3 weeks into smoking a pipe after 15 years with cigars. It's such a great hobby. You are going to love that 673KS. It's my best smoking pipe so far, very dependable, and forgiving for a noob like me, haha. Haven't yet tried any of those blends, but I do have the Capstan Gold and will be reviewing it very soon. It's great to virtually meet you. Thanks for stopping by and saying hello. Cheers, Andy.

    Aged Peterson Navy Rolls are amazing. I've never had tongue bite. Crazy. If you're ever worried about tongue bite use a 9mm filter

    • @Piper_Andy
      @Piper_Andy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It really is amazing! I loved them if you couldn't tell from the video. I think I'm just prone to tongue bite because I get it a lot. Even from blends without a lot of Virginia. My mouth chemistry just doesn't take the pipe tobacco smoke well. I'm hoping that will change as I get more experience because I really love it. Thank you for your comment. I hope to see you around. Cheers, Andy.

    • @briandawkins984

      @@Piper_Andy Andy, try a tobacco with a heavy burley base and no flavour. Maybe English or oriental blends. Keep your cadence slow. Use a 9 mm filter pipe. Make certain your tobacco is not moist. No aromatics. All that 16:42 should reduce tongue bite. Also keep a glass of water handy to swig if you get any hint of bite. Use a long stem filter pipe with a thin bowl, and pay care that the bowl doesn’t get super hot. Best of luck.

      I appreciate the kind words Jonathan. De Luxe Navy Rolls is a high quality tobacco no doubt, but I'm afraid it just doesn't agree with my mouth chemistry right now. I love them things. Deluxe navy rolls are the bomb. I like to take them and put them in a jar and come back to them about a month later, for some reason it seems to improve them. I always smoke 9mm filter pipes,but even if I didn't, those rolls wouldn't bother me

    • @Piper_Andy
      @Piper_Andy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A thoughtful and thorough review of Peterson's De Luxe Navy Rolls. As an interesting comparison of styles/components, Escudo would a blend to consider trying as well. Subtle differences, both are tasty VaPers. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on R. McConnel Scottish Flake. KPO, Gary

    I wonder if pH was a factor in the tongue bite you experienced.
    In smokeless tobacco, it is normal for recipes to include an alkalizer (something that raises pH) to free up the nicotine and make it more readily absorbed by the body. If you overdo it though, you can quite easily end up with caustic levels of alkalinity.

    • @Piper_Andy
      @Piper_Andy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've been starting to think that myself. I'm experimenting with some different kind of pipes, prep styles, and packing density. I'm hoping it's just my inexperience and not a broader issue with my mouth chemistry. After my week off from smoking, I'm going to try to get it dialed in a little better. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I hope to see you around. Cheers, Andy.

      @@Piper_Andy hopefully it will change so that you can enjoy it. I’m still having a lot of frustration with being able to enjoy blends. When I smell the tobacco, it is so inviting and wonderful. Then when I smoke it, I’m disappointed. I’m trying to do all the right things to detect flavors, but maybe it’s just going to take some time. I hope you have a great day as well!

    • @Piper_Andy
      @Piper_Andy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You will get there, it just takes time, practice, and patience. Not that I'm in any position to give advice, but I would just focus on trying to get a good smoking experience first, then start flavor chasing/hunting second. The smell in the tin is usually going to be different than the smell of the smoke. Also, the quality of the tobacco matters a lot. You're not going to get too much other than the artificial topping flavors from aromatics for the most part. Hang in there and you will start picking it up. One thing this hobby has taught me is that there is no substitute for or shortcut to experience. Cheers, Andy.

      It is a hobby that rewards patience. Just this morning I had two bad experiences. I smoked two different blends in two different pipes and all I was getting was hot air. I think I packed them incorrectly and it lead to burn issues. Now my tongue is a bit scorched and I'll have to wait until tomorrow to try again. Practice makes perfect though. Take care.
