Pipe and a Pint. I think few things are made for each other. Although Pipe with a strong cup of tea with the shot of whisky in it is an admirable combination too.
We have a local church St Mary the Virgin North Shoebury which is 750 years old. They built the Asda superstore right next to it. The church is now affectionately known locally as St Mary-by-Asda. My husband's grandfather was a village blacksmith on the Yorkshire Wolds. He was a regular Sunday worshipper. Walking back from parish church to forge after service he would always stop for a pint in the Middleton Arms. When challenged by his Methodist wife he would always claim he was 'thirsting after righteousness'
How refreshing you are. Books i still have, but had to give up my wine and smokes.. how i miss them. And how i wish i had a splendid fellow like yourself to sit down with and have interesting conversations.
Love these books! Thank you, Malcolm, and for reading your essay. My father had several Britain in Pictures books in his library and I remember when I was a child being attracted by the covers, especially their colours and wonderful art work, and though not a pipe smoker (wondering if there are any female pipe smokers amongst us?), I reckon the joy of opening a fresh tin of tobacco is as intoxicating to you, as lifting the lid off a tin of fresh Darjeeling loose leaf tea is to me.
yes, they are wonderful little books. My great grandmother used to light her husband's pipe and get it going for him and liked it so much that she took up a pipe herself and they spent their evenings sitting companionably by the ingle nook puffing away

For most of my life I've been reading again and again C. S. Lewis's Out of the Silent Planet. It's 16 readings so far. Ransom only just reaches Thulcandra, our world, after a sojourn on Malacandra (Mars). It's night and he walks through dark country till he approaches a village. He smells the beer of an inn. Ransom enters. "A pint of bitter, please," he says. His first words back on Earth. I have long wished I knew what beers available to me would be closest to the beverage that was drawn for Ransom on that wet night. What I imagine is that it was something like an India Pale Ale -- something nice and hoppy, like Sierra Nevada "Torpedo." But I don't know exactly. Suggestions would be welcome, especially in case anyone's had a good glass of bitter in England and then found something available in the States that was close.
@@MalcolmGuitespellThank you! I'll try to find out if that's available here in the Upper Midwest. Probably we need a Rosetta Stone of Beer, though -- something that would indicate close (?) equivalents of English beers with American beers. With the great growth of craft beers here in the States, I would think that this goal would not actually be ridiculous. The carving of this Rosetta Stone of Beer must be the work of masons who have travelled to both places, unlike myself.
My favourite Peterson blends are their Irish Flake and 3p’s. The 3p’s is a plug and I rather like slicing it with a knife, there’s something ritualistic in the cutting and preparation, coupled with the anticipation of a great smoke that’s accompanied by the rather delightful aroma. A smell which is reminiscent of a lost world and the long gone high street tobacconists.

Love the story and content , very interesting subject, not to heavy , I love old Inns & Pubs , old churches are another interest , you might find how place names come about and there origins and how they evolved into what we have today , I find the subjects interesting, love your Sherlock Holmes pipe and Tankard, one of my Aunties bought me a pewter Tankard for my 21st Birthday and my Mum bought me a Meecham lined Brier pipe , so the two go together throw a good book in there and you can be quite content with yourself. Thank you Malcom 😊
I absolutely love listening to people who have knowledge and control over the english language that is simultaneously poetic and masterfully deep at the conversational level. Just watching this video has relaxed me greatly and I love the inspiration derived from Tolkien who is one of my favourite writers. Subscribed on the first video!
"...Lives in a long continuos present..." beautiful words. Thanks for sharing, Fr. Malcom. God bless you and may our Mother Mary protect you always with her blessed mantle!
Its really so good to see this its a very comfortable watch.
What a tranquil & delightful video. Thank you so much!
Very aptly expressed regarding the continuity not only in regards to the old inn but the old church as well. Watching you sit and read, I can almost smell the delicious smoke from your pipe.🤗
Pipe and a Pint. I think few things are made for each other. Although Pipe with a strong cup of tea with the shot of whisky in it is an admirable combination too.
indeed
We have a local church St Mary the Virgin North Shoebury which is 750 years old. They built the Asda superstore right next to it. The church is now affectionately known locally as St Mary-by-Asda.
My husband's grandfather was a village blacksmith on the Yorkshire Wolds. He was a regular Sunday worshipper. Walking back from parish church to forge after service he would always stop for a pint in the Middleton Arms. When challenged by his Methodist wife he would always claim he was 'thirsting after righteousness'
St. Mary-by-Asda - excellent!
You earned a like just on the Title Alone !
Enjoy a pint and a pipe, the world would be a better place if more people did ! :-)
Cheers !
Cheers!
Excellent ale choice! Lovely listening to you. Thank you.
This is what I needed. I’m Navajo so I love story telling like my grandma and grandpa also my parents use to tell me and my sisters when we were kids were the most memorable and beautiful thing ever for me. Also some scary stories too. Since I got older like 12 I’ve been reading books and collecting them, also comic books and graphic novels. Im a bookworm but I don’t tell my friends. J love your stories and pipe collection.
What a wonderful channel I have stumbled upon… full of gentleness, erudite discussion and delightful literary gems. Thank you so much.
One long, continuous, present. Beautiful! Thank you Malcolm. Cheers!
The study of an artist is messy, full of books and drinks, and behind everything is a story.
Was trying to learn how to blow rings and found this channel. and so I still sit here not quite getting them but relaxing and having a good laugh, couldn't have found a better way to end my day.
I wish this gentleman was my neighbor. We’d have jolly good chats and share pipes and pints regularly. We’ll have to continue in spirit. Best wishes from a random backyard shed in Arizona!
Suggestions would be welcome, especially in case anyone's had a good glass of bitter in England and then found something available in the States that was close.
it would have been a regular 'session' bitter. If he was in Oxfordshire it might have been Hook Norton Brewery's 'Old Hooky'
You remind me of several of my old professor's rolled into one. I really love youre videos: from that first knock at the door and youre answer, right to the very end.
I love watching your videos, especially ones where you enjoy a smoke of your pipes and various beverages. You got me so interested in Peterson pipes that I actually researched the company and history of pipe making in Ireland. I was fortunate enough to find a brand new 150th Peterson Anniversary pipe and purchased it...it was the last one that store still had from six years ago! When I listen to you it is like sitting and listening to a wise grandfather with so much life experience to share. I thank you for sharing!
Thanks. You did well to get that anniversary Peterson!
I'm a newbie in smoking pipe, but is awesome to me be capable of discovering new things about this world, like this channel, I'm from Brazil, and our pipe smokers community is not so big as English speakers community, and in some time in my search about that I forgot that I speak English kkkkkkk, but to end all my blablabla, I never knew my dad, but if I could choose a dad, it would be someone like you, a man with curiosity and knowledge, you are amazing Sir!!
Ever since my daughter moved to the UK I have wandered whenever I visit in search of you although I didn't know it was you I was looking for
