  • The historic Irvington, New York, summer home of Madam C.J. Walker still stands today, reminding us of the optimism and perseverance of America’s first self-made female millionaire. Villa Lewaro has changed hands several times since Madam Walker passed away, but her entrepreneurial spirit lives on through the home’s restoration, in the hands of owners Helena and Ambassador Harold E. Doley. Here, Helena Doley speaks to the power in preserving this landmark of African American achievement for future generations of Americans.

    I'd love to tour this amazing estate. To think that a black woman created a business..that allowed her to live so well is amazing. Her home is beautiful. Remember people her legacy existed before this movie... If you feel that her life in anyway was falsely depicted in the movie feel free to read books about her and do your own research. One things for sure. she was a phenomenal woman. Can't nobody take that from her.

      It's not "if you *feel* ".. though. It's not about a feeling. According to online research the Netflix movie about her life IS falsely depicted in so many areas and it's incomprehensible as to why...? When a historical figure, who has achieved so much in just 12-13 years and an inspiration to many women even of different races, really should be introduced to the masses through a factual biopic, not a story "inspired by..." with all kinds of weird agendas going on. It's excellent acting but story wise it's alot of bs.

      @Rose Stephen .... You are ABSOLUTELY correct. Even though all we have today is the historical perspective “they” present to us - The Great, Proud, Hard Working, SMART, Madame C J Walker, did NOT strike me as an “ass kisser “, head bowing WOMAN. She most DEFINITELY did everything that she did to uplift and encourage BLACK women. Why would she WASTE her time, .”uplifting” White women, who didn’t have to work hard to earn a damn thing. They have ALWAYS felt privileged and superior - and have been handed all they desire on a silver platter.
      The narrative from the woman in this video - indicating that Madame “worked tirelessly for ALL WOMEN “, sounds naive and stupid.
      She was definitely a Black woman that was about the business of uplifting HER. Own Black people.
      I wish I could have met her. My heart just burst with pride when I see ALL that she accomplished ! She makes me So PROUD to be a Black woman. I LOVE her.
      Madame C J Walker’s spirit and that of her daughter A’Lelia and ALL of the people who stood with her - LIVE on through me.❤️💕😥.
      God Bless their beautiful souls and memory .

    • @c.calliecoleman1531
      @c.calliecoleman1531 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's almost like those that has suffered hard knocks such as losing both parents at the tender age of 7, that God follows them more,and blesses them more, as though trying to make up for the terrible loss they suffered. Some can't see their blessings. I know a person who also lost a parent at a tender age, but has harbored so much bitterness, probably even blaming God for it, that even though outwardly I can visibly see how blessed and fortunate she is, by her possessions, and how she handles her business pretty well, I also see she's not complete, because of that bitterness she reveals sometimes. The thing is some people who think they know it all, you can't tell them a thing you feel would help. So I leave her be. I have been through enough people like this, and I found they all are like that, and I call them Nutty Professors, and let it go. I know God has a way of getting to them, even He has to do it in a dream, because He leaves nothing incomplete. I know He had to come to me in a dream to let me know that holding grudges was bad. I had been holding grudges for about 10years against some people who sent me thru some grief, and one night 10yrs later I had been praying to God for help for a family member in trouble. So I was going to sleep and I clearly heard "How do you expect your prayers to be answered when you can't forgive others". I instantly sat up, and knew it was from God, and said"Lord I forgive them, and forgive me for holding grudges". Madam C.J.Walker was a very wise woman so I'm sure she knew her blessed life, came from God.

    She fulfilled a need that every black woman desired and that's an easier way to manage your hair that's why she was so successful. Like right now for example: They are trying to find a cure for the covid19 virus. When madam wanted to comb her hair she couldn't because it was too thick and kinky at the root, the only way she could wear it more than one day was in braids or a wig. Now we have the flat iron and the perm. The perm last the longest.

    This movie should inspire Black women, and teach White women. Sooo stop with the its for black women not all women crap. I’m a black woman who is proud there’s a black woman that can inspire all women!!! Black,white,Asian,Hispanic,Indian, and more!!! Stop the hate. We know she’s a strong Black woman that’s obvious, but she was also a business woman,a go getter, a believer, and those doesn’t come with race. Let this movie be about empowering women, not about race, cause if it was about race I’m pretty sure it would’ve been in the movie ❤️.

    I wonder if Madame CJ Walker n any of the other " elite" blacks then if they weren't apart of a Sorority/Fraternity would they still be that successful??? Just a question just seems like all the black millionaires, intellectuals,inventors,writers belong to a Sorority/ Fraternity. Did you have to? History is important for two reasons that we may not reapeat the problems of the past also we can be inspired by the great things we've done to catapult us into our future.

      Madame C. J. Walker was not a member of a NPHC fraternal organization, however, her Villa Lewaro Mansion was designed by Vertner Woodson Tandy, an accomplished African American architect whom also was one of the seven founders of the first inter-collegiate fraternities for black men, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., at Cornell University in 1906 in Ithaca New York.

    I came here because of the Netflix story. It was entertaining but misleading. I can appreciate the fictional aspect because it lead me to do my own research on Walker and Annie Malone, the real 1st African American woman millionaire. She was the pioneer of hair care products which lead to Walker's success. Now is that sign fact or fiction?
